Book Description
During Alan Greenspan's tenure at the US Federal Reserve Board the US economy has consistently outperformed expectations. Greenspan has not been panicked by recessionary pressures and has held faith in the view that, despite short term setbacks, the world economy is locked into a steady long term upward cycle and is about to enter another 'Golden Age' comparable to that of the late 19th Century.
Customer Reviews:
Truly Marvellous.......2001-02-03
Francois-Xavier Chevallier's work is truly exceptional. The book has given the right momentum to the thought of economic phenomena proceeding by alternative phases of expansion and comparison. The book has certainly taken me to the Golden Age. The Marvellous clock depicted in the book has made me think about the next up wave that is round the corner as suggested by the book. If the Central Bankers would have thought in the lines of Fed's Chairman and emphasized on the long wave phenomena then they would have been able to avert the recessionary period the world is witnessing now. This book is definitely worth having in the Library. It would have scored a top star rating if the author had explained how Greenspan read the early signals and pulled out the US from the down wave. However, the author requires aprreciation for his work in putting forward the Long Wave Theory through this book with statistical validation. The best part of the book is how the Kondrateiff Cycle is examined and compared with the present scenarios.
Book Description
Can you say anything about sex at the office anymore? Yes, maybe, but read this first.
Sexual harassment is a malign specter hovering over workplaces everywhere. One touch of its foul breath can devastate businesses--causing them to lose millions of dollars, not to mention waste bundles of time and energy. Needless to say, organizations are running scared.
This book provides managers with vital information to protect themselves and their companies from lawsuits, bad publicity, decreased employee morale, and other associated miseries. Topics covered include: * laws and court decisions (including the most recent Supreme Court rulings) what behavior is acceptable--and what isn't * preventive policies and staff training * investigating complaints, and more.
With one of every three cases filed with the EEOC involving a sexual harassment claim, managers need help. This complete "answer book"--with real-life scenarios, self-help quizzes, checklists, and thoughtful analysis--gives them just the guidance they need.
Customer Reviews:
Easy-to-read, thorough, well-written, great resource!.......1999-04-24
Managers and supervisors may find it hard to show leadership about sexual harassment when they're not sure what it is and don't feel much confidence about the subject. This book gives managers information and confidence. The chapter that helps readers recognize when their own behavior could expose their employers to liability, even when that is not the supervisor's intention, is especially good. There are many books about sexual harassment, but not many that really talk to managers and can serve as an ongoing support. This is one of the few. Highly recommended.

Facts and images for Apollo missions 12 through 17 are covered in this concise guide to the program's essentials—mission objectives, dates, flight plans, astronauts, space suits, and vehicles—for collectors, educators, space enthusiasts, and those just discovering the history of the space program.
Customer Reviews:
Apollo the Second Chapter.......2007-03-19
The pocket series from Apogee gets better and better. Project Apollo: Exploring the Moon, Vol. 2 is a concise summary of the later Apollo missions that were truly meaningful expeditions. When scientists realized Apollo 17 would end the moon program they started cramming science into every mission. The LRV allowed the moonwalkers to become lunar explorers, traveling miles around each landing site. Most of the photographs included the book are well known, but they provide visual highlights to each mission. Who can forget Young's jumping salute and Cernan's John Wayne stance? This is America at its finest.
Solid basic info on Apollo.......2006-12-14
This book is a great start to get to know what the Apollo Moon Program was all about. It's info-packed with drawings/illustrations and photographs. It's a solid introduction to Apogee Books' NASA Mission Reports series by Robert Godwin. This Pocket Space Guide, written by the same author, is of the same high-quality standard than the NASA Mission Reports. Great job.
So much GREAT Apollo stuff!.......2006-10-11
Not only is this Pocket Guide jammed with information, it's also got a great collection of Apollo photographs, beautifully reproduced. I'm really knocked out by the black and white ones Rob Godwin has colorized, like the panorama of Dave Scott working at the rover on the slopes of Hadley Delta peak. No Apollo fan should miss this book!
-- Andrew Chaikin, author of "A Man on the Moon"
Another WINNER from Apogee.......2006-10-02
This is Volume II of a three part series of guidebooks on the Apollo project. Volume I covers Apollo missions 1 through 10 and this one covers 11 through 17. Textual coverage is only in brief detail, in the first half of the book, but Mr. Goodwin deserves an award for his writing style. He manages to highlight mostly the significant events of these manned missions to the Moon; the exception being Apollo 13. The latter was fairly accurately dramatized in Tom Hank's movie by the same name, so the author saw fit to only gloss over that mission assuming most readers will already know the story and most pertinent facts. However, the other six missions are still reasonably well described collectively in only the first 19 pages, as each of NASA's succeeding mission objective became increasingly more complex.
I think the introductions to each of Mr. Goodwins Pocket Space Guides are the best part, and can be read in less than an hour or so. They are intentional kept quite brief, yet inject reflections of centuries old, man's quest (and struggles) for enlightenment through greater scientific knowledge, with some of the greatest minds who may envisioned voyages to the Moon, long before it was technologically possible.
The book's writing style held my interest, because it is both educational and face paced; a perfect blend for both the casually interested and die hard Apollo freaks. The material is presented factually, yet with a certain flair that the average reader can easily understand and appreciate.
The middle part of the book is just the factual accounts of each mission in sequence with little more depth textually than already covered in the introduction, only with many more statistics and time based information.
The last half of the book is a collection of color photos - several blended together on a single page - of all the lunar landing missions. Of course, most of these are of the "Right Stuff" Apollo astronauts, in portraits taken just before their missions, and while in training. Their are stills of their Saturn V rockets on the launch pad and Apollo Command and Lunar Module spacecrafts inflight. All photos are fine selections, uniquely representative of each mission, showing wide ranging contrast in lunar landscapes at or near some (not all) of the landing site.
The only criticism of this book is the physical book itself; i.e. its construction. The binding is a bit intrusive to the margins on each page and with sufficient flexing, while turning pages for best viewing, individual pages can become detached. Nevertheless, these books are very inexpensive and certainly well worth the price for the rich content of Apollo facts, photos and history they succinctly reveal to the reader.
Book Description
Theory of Orbits treats celestial mechanics as well as stellar dynamics from the common point of view of orbit theory, making use of concepts and techniques from modern geometric mechanics. It starts with elementary Newtonian mechanics and ends with the dynamics of chaotic motion. The two volumes are meant for students in astronomy and physics alike. Prerequisite is a physicist's knowledge of calculus and differential geometry.

Book Description
Though largely inaccessible, the geochemistry of Earth's mantle and core can be examined through a wide variety of approaches. Volume 2 focuses first on "remote" sensing using evidence from cosmochemical, seismic, petrologic and geochemical approaches. Mantle composition is then examined in detail through descriptions of mantle samples brought to Earth's surface through tectonic, volcanic, and volatile-outgassing processes. The volume concludes with examination of processes that modify the composition of the mantle and core including an early magma ocean, partial melting, element partitioning between minerals and melts, and physical mixing caused by plate subduction, mantle convection and mass exchange between mantle and core.

Stellar Structure and Evolution (Astronomy and Astrophysics Library)
ASIN: 3540646647 |
Book Description
This volume is a reference source of fundamental formulae in physics and astrophysics. In contrast to most of the usual compendia it carefully explains the physical assumptions entering the formulae. All the important results of physical theories are covered: electrodynamics, hydrodynamics, general relativity, atomic and nuclear physics, and so on. Over 2100 formulae are included, and the original papers for the formulae are cited together with papers on modern applications in a bibliography of over 1900 entries. For this new edition, a chapter on space, time, matter and cosmology has been included and the other chapters have been carefully revised.

A very-very useful book even for researchers.......2000-02-04
Well, if you'd like to have a lot of useful mathemathical formulae on hand when making your astrophysical computations (at any topics as I can admit) then this is the very book you need. My only problem with it is that it doesn't cover all the formulae I needed for my computations but maybe I'm not fair wishing the impossible... Anyway it spared me a really big amount of time when on my desk.

Book Description
Over the past few years, laser intensities have dramatically increased. Today, relatively compact laser systems can produce on target intensities four to five orders of magnitude greater than was previously possible. During this conference, the most recent theoretical and experimental advances in several fields of basic physics and of the relevant technological applications, made possible by the rapid development of such superstrong lasers, were presented and discussed. In the present volume the reader will find general and technical contributions on topics such as atomic and molecular dynamics in strong fields, high harmonic generation, coherent X-ray radiation, nonlinear plasma dynamics and relativistic optics, ultrarelativistic particle production and acceleration, inertial confinement fusion and fast ignition, laboratory astrophysics, high energy astrophysics and cosmology, applications of superstrong pulses to high energy physics.

"Critically acclaimed and bestselling crime writer James Lee Burke returns to Louisiana where his ever-popular hero, Dave Robicheaux, sleuths his way through a hotbed of sin and uncertainty. For Dave Robicheaux, life in Louisiana is filled with haunting memories of the past -- images from Vietnam, the violent streets of New Orleans, and his own troubled youth. In Crusader's Cross, a deathbed confession from an old schoolmate resurrects a story of injustice, the murder of a young woman, and a time in Robicheaux's life he has tried to forget. Her name may or may not have been Ida Durbin. It was back in the innocent days of the 1950s when Robicheaux and his brother, Jimmie, met her on a Galveston beach. She was pretty and Jimmie fell for her hard -- not knowing she was a prostitute on infamous Post Office Street, with ties to the mob. Then Ida was abducted and never seen again. Now, decades later, Robicheaux is asking questions about Ida Durbin, and a couple of redneck deputy sheriffs make it clear that asking questions is a dangerous game. With a series of horrifying murders and the sudden appearance of Valentine Chalons and his sister, Honoria, a disturbed and deeply alluring woman, Robicheaux is soon involved not only with the Chalons family but with the murderous energies of the New Orleans underworld. Also, he meets and finds himself drawn into a scandalous relationship with a remarkable Catholic nun. Brilliant, brooding, and filled with the author's signature lyricism, Jim Burke's latest novel is a darkly suspenseful work of literature. "
Customer Reviews:
Wonderful!!.......2007-10-04
This was my first JLB novel and I really enjoyed it. The writing was very smooth and the story was interesting and engaging the whole time. No slow spots. Which I appreciate big time. I'm off to read another.
Jimmy Burke You Are A Damn Fine Writer!.......2007-09-20
So, I started reading James Lee Burke when I was a sales rep for a publisher and another rep recommended the first "Dave Robicheaux" novel "Neon Rain". Good God! That book gave me the chills and I read each new installment, as they came out. At some point I kept buying the books, but my reading pile got too big and they got buried and I missed a chunk of Dave's life while mine was going on. This summer I got some lake time and brought up "Crusader's Cross" (although I'd missed reading a few prior to to this one) and, like your favorite pair of shoes, just slid right into it, just opened it up and couldn't put it down. Dave and Cletus have aged a bit and are still taking their licks, and handing out their fair share, but Burke has not lost anything over the years, in fact, he just keeps getting better. Get it, read it and pass it on to a friend. Burke is a treasure!
A Master Crime Novel.......2007-09-17
In CRUSADER'S CROSS James Lee Burke's protagonist Dave Robicheaux, along with his brother Jimmy, is saved from a potential shark attack by a mysterious woman named Ida Durbin in 1958. Jimmy falls for her; then she disappears-- perhaps violently, may even be murdered. Burke spends the next 300 or so pages unraveling that mystery with a plot that has more twists and turns than a two-lane mountain highway and is peopled with prostitutes, televangelists, a nun, pimps, hired killers (button men), crooked police officers and bail bondsmen.
Dave is of course an alcoholic-- goes to AA meetings on occasion-- is a little bit crazy--his friend Clete describes him as having "polka dot giraffes running around in his head"-- has read THE GREAT GATSBY, is excited by violence, but has the mind of a poet. It is fascinating to see all the ways he describes the sky: "marbled with yellow and gold clouds," "yellow with rust," "pink with sunrise," "a chemical green," etc. And he has a dozen different ways to describe taking someone out: "boil you in your own grease," "blown out of his socks," you'll be made into a "speed bump," you'll get your ticket punched or your doors blown out. His definition of God-- via Dave's father-- as someone who has a sense of humor and always keeps his word. He, in addition to being a sure shot, is also a philosopher. His description of a visit to a Wal-Mart is right on the money. "The sweeping breadth of the store's interior was crowded with people for whom a Wal-Mart is a gift from God. In my hometown, most of these are poor and uneducated, and assume that the low-paying jobs that define their lives are commonplace throughout the country. The fact that the goods they buy are often shoddily made, the clothes sewn in Third World sweatshops by people not unlike themselves, is an abstraction that seems to have no application to the low price on the item." Mr. Burke strews kernels like this throughout the book.
CRUSADER'S CROSS is a novel you miss when you are not reading it. It you are not careful it will eat up your day.
James Lee Burke strikes again.......2007-09-16
Burke is a wonderful writer. His greatest gift to his readers is his ability to put us in a location and evoke the atmosphere. This second greatest gift is his respect for his characters-they are NEVER one-dimensional. And, finally, he never cheats by offering us cheap or easy outs. Even when we reeeeally don't want Dave to take the drink or spout off or draw the weapon, he has been written to always be Dave, as have Clete and other recurring characters (including the state of Lousiana!)
Crusader's Cross is as dark as the Robicheaux books get, but you'll have a hard time putting it down. It will help if you are familiar with the characters, but probably not essential (can't say for sure because there is no Burke book I won't read, so I am well acquainted with these folks.) The only reason I don't give it 5 stars is that I reserve those for Pulitzer material. Don't let that discourage you. This is an excellent book.
Can this guy write or what! .......2007-07-06
I picked Crusaders Cross up expecting a run of the mill detective novel and was absolutely leveled by Burke's prose. Burke writing literally breathes Louisiana onto the page. Writing of this caliber is rare in the crime fiction genre. Burke elevates a complex but still relatively pedestrian crime novel, into something else entirely. His writing is insightful, perceptive, and lyrical - evoking a sense of time and place that is stunning.
The plot itself is multilayered. A deathbed confession gets our hero Dave Robicheaux to start looking into the disappearance of a prostitute who Dave and his half brother Jimmy met back in 1958. Meanwhile, a serial killer is abducting and brutally murdering women. Before long Dave must content with hit men who have been dispatched to punch his ticket, a budding romance with a nun, trumped up charges of sexual molestation, a mentally unstable woman who handcuffs him to his bed, and a hard fall 'off the wagon' with subsequent memory loss that results in Dave becoming the prime suspect in one of his own murder investigations.
The cast of characters is the literary equivalent of a royal flush. Dave's buddy Clete Purcel stands out though as one of the most entertaining characters I've ever come across.
Crusaders Cross is the first James Lee Burke novel I've read, but it certainly won't be the last. Brilliant writing and a complex multilayered plot. Well worth reading.
