Book Description
Contrary to popular belief, most people truly desire to commit to the organizations for which they work. Just as most of us would prefer not to drift from one relationship to the next, the majority of workers would rather not live like corporate gypsies. So why, at a time when employee retention is so critical to success, do so many businesses find it hard to hold on to their best people? Why, despite the perks, bonuses, and all the other "goodies" with which companies attempt to create employee commitment, does turnover continue to be such a serious problem?
In this groundbreaking book, Michael O'Malley-an acknowledged expert with more than two decades of experience helping the Fortune 500 attract and retain the brightest and best-provides answers to these questions. More importantly, he spells out proven strategies for fostering solid employee/employer relationships that last.
Deftly interweaving personal insight, case histories, and the latest research in the field, O'Malley explores the nature of employee commitment. He shows how many of the same needs and passions that bind people to one another in their personal
lives also bind employees to managers and organizations. O'Malley describes the roles played by factors such as compatibility, trust, predictability, dependability, sensitivity to individual needs, and a willingness to compromise. He explains why organizations invariably fail when they attempt to buy employee commitment. Conversely, while more money is the most commonly cited reason for employee defection, O'Malley reveals that the real reasons often have to do with neglect, distrust, burn-out, inconsiderateness, and other nonmonetary considerations.
The lion's share of Creating Commitment is devoted to detailing a practical approach to building commitment in your organization. O'Malley describes specific attitudes and behaviors that either encourage or discourage commitment and provides guidelines for assessing your company's standing on commitment. He also outlines specific steps you can take to find and hire employees who are compatible with your corporate culture; to foster a sense of belonging among employees; to build trust and reciprocity; to promote economic interdependence; and much more.
A complete guide to understanding and overcoming one of the greatest challenges to business success today, Creating Commitment is must reading for every manager.
Advance Praise for Michael O'Malley's Creating Commitment
"Michael O'Malley has found the key to employee retention-commitment! He has taken a rigorous, research-based approach to understanding employee commitment and its implications for organization health, while using examples and comparisons from everyday life to make his insights accessible to all. The result is a must-read book for any leader concerned about keeping the best employees."-Dr. Susan Gale, Vice President, Change Management and Human Resources, Howrey Simon Arnold & White
"Michael O'Malley has created a work of great insight that all professionals charged with attracting, retaining, and developing the leaders of today and tomorrow will want to read."-Corey Seitz, Senior Vice President, Executive Development, Bank of America Corporation
"The two most important human aspects of organizations today are trust and commitment. Creating Commitment covers both and is loaded with stories and examples that are both readable and timely. O'Malley's contribution to today's business leaders is truly a gift."-Dr. W. Warner Burke, Chair, Department of Organization and Leadership, Teachers College, Columbia University
"This is an important book for companies seeking a competitive advantage. Read Creating Commitment, and you'll know how to build lasting bonds with the employees you want most to keep."-Matt Broder, Communications Executive, Otis Elevator Company

This CD got me an A-!.......2000-04-22
Whether you enjoy Chemistry or not, this is a great idea! By using all sorts of cool graphics and videos and animations, this CD ROM actually makes what I've always found to be a totally hard subject, much easier. I used it for my Chemistry class last semester and managed to actually pull off a A-! Had I been using the textbook only, I know I would not have done nearly as well. Rather than simply barely making it through the class, now I feel like I actually understand Chemistry. Imagine that!

Book Description
Jason Bourne.
He has no past. And he may have no future. His memory is blank. He only knows that he was flushed out of the Mediterranean Sea, his body riddled with bullets.
There are a few clues. A frame of microfilm surgically implanted beneath the flesh of his hip. Evidence that plastic surgery has altered his face. Strange things that he says in his delirium -- maybe code words. Initial: "J.B." And a number on the film negative that leads to a Swiss bank account, a fortune of four million dollars, and, at last, a name: Jason Bourne.
But now he is marked for death, caught in a maddening puzzle, racing for survival through the deep layers of his buried past into a bizarre world of murderous conspirators -- led by Carlos, the world's most dangerous assassin. And no one can help Jason Bourne but the woman who once wanted to escape him.

A Top-Notched, Thrilling Story.......2007-09-28
Jason Bourne, the hero is brought to life by Robert Ludlum. The author has a gift to bring this character to a stage that you can almost live his life with him, feel his distress and his agony. The story was very captivating and it was a thrilling read.
When it comes to the "spy" novel, there are few writers that exceed Robert Ludlum's talents. When I finished reading this book I came to this conclusion that most "thriller" writers fall way short. The book is fairly long, so set back and enjoy several evenings of an exciting, wonderful story. I look forward to reading the sequel to this book. Highly recommend.
different from movie, but good.......2007-09-25
I bought the book as a fan of the movie. Totally
different plot, similar but different character.
In some ways the book is more "real", but the book
also strings together a series of near preposterous
events. Makes it a real page turner though :)
Worth reading; if you liked the movie for its glimpse
into the "life of a spy", you'll like the book.
Timeless Wonder.......2007-09-23
Long before the movies came out, I was a Bourne fan. I read this book, the first time, when I was 16 years old. I've read it again about 4 more times since then. Ludlum takes the reader on a wild ride as we travel the world with Jason Bourne. We are fighting along side him as we track 'Carlos' around the globe and we fall in love with Marie as he does. Matt Damon did a wonderful job but the real Bourne lives within these pages. You won't be disappointed with any of Ludlum's books - I've read them all.
absolutely amazing.......2007-09-12
This book was absolutely amazing! I can't get over the amount of detail that Robert Ludlum put into the plot of this book. It's a non-stop action packed story with a bit of mystery tied in. I could not put it down.
I wanted to read the book before seeing the movie and I am glad I did, as I hear that they are very different from one another. The characters in the story are very believable and you can't help but want Jason and Marie to succeed.
The story is about a man "Jason Bourne" who wakes up and can't remember who he is. However his body is covered in scars and bullet wounds and a piece of microfilm with a Swiss bank account number was surgically removed from his hip. While Jason is trying to get to the bottom of who he is, he finds that he has been targeted by "Carlos" the world's most lethal assassin.
not quite my ideal novel.......2007-09-11
Like many people I came to this book through the movies based on Robert Ludlum's Bourne novels. I read THE JANSON DIRECTIVE several years ago (blew through it on a 30-hour train ride between Kolkata and Chennai), and though it was entertaining enough to pass the time with, I felt like it was essentially literary packing foam. I wasn't looking for Les Miserables, mind you, but Ludlum's characters are pretty mechanical, operating basically to show off a hidden world of espionage, conspiracy, and cool gadgets. There's nothing essentially wrong with this kind of novel, but I prefer character-driven fiction, where I can see personalities of some complexity and depth grapple with challenges and come out changed somehow. As far as I can tell, Ludlum didn't write this kind of novel often.
But THE BOURNE IDENTITY is an attempt at this kind of novel. The main character, so-called "Jason Bourne," is not struggling against assassins and CIA operatives for some political agenda or even merely to save his own life. He is trying to understand himself, to learn who he is. As one character states (as an almost shameless declaration of the "moral of the story"), "In a way, [Bourne is] a functioning microcosm of us all. I mean, we're all trying to find out who the hell we are, aren't we?" Such internal conflict, however, is handled quite clumsily in Ludlum's hands, which seem unaccustomed to dealing with emotional subtleties. Credit should go to the makers of the Bourne movies (Matt Damon and the rest of the cast prominent among them) for breathing life and depth into these characters.
I was a bit disappointed at how much of the mysteries surrounding Bourne's character are resolved for the reader not through Bourne himself learning the truth, but through a significant number of scenes where Bourne's adversaries discuss the details of his past life amongst themselves. For me this sucked the momentum out of the winding up scenes, and left me feeling like I'd missed the climax.
One last thing: those picking up THE BOURNE IDENTITY having seen the movies should be aware that the novel was published in 1980. While many of the basic premises remain the same, this is not exactly the same story you saw on screen. This is not at all a bad thing, but some people get really upset when they're expecting a perfect translation between literature and film or vice versa.

Eight CDs, 9 hrs.
performances by Darren McGavin
THE BOURNE IDENTITY-He is a man with an unknown past and an uncertain future. A man dragged from the sea riddled with bullets, his face altered by plastic surgery-a man bearing the dubious identity of Jason Bourne. Now he is running for his life, the target of professional assassins, at the center of a maddening deadly puzzle. Who is Jason Bourne? To answer that question, he must find the secret buried deep in his own past. And the only one who can help him is a beautiful stranger-the woman who once would do anything to escape him.
THE BOURNE SUPREMECY-The Vice Premier of the People's Republic of China is brutally slain in a Kowloon cabaret, and all the clues point to the legendary assassin, Jason Bourne. But Bourne never existed! The name was created as a cover for ace agent David Webb on his search for the notorious killer Carlos. Now someone else has resurrected the Bourne identity, and Webb is forced to use his murderous skills to stop him. Because once again, like a nightmare relived, the woman he loves is suddenly torn from his life. To find her, to trap his own imposter, Webb must launch a desperate odyssey into the killing fields of international espionage.
THE BOURNE ULTIMATUM-Thirteen years have passed since David Webb was last forced to assume the alias of the assassin Jason Bourne. Thirteen blissfully peaceful years: time enough to raise a family with his wife Marie, time enough to begin to put the violence and betrayal of the past behind him. Now with one phone call Webb is thrust back into the madness. His greatest enemy, Carlos, is hunting again-determined to stalk and eliminate the one man whose reputation as an assassin approaches his own, a determination that promises pain and death for David Webb and those who mean the world to him.

Robert Ludlum Value collection.......2007-08-28
These CD's are great. I have most of Ludlums books but it is nice to be able to listen in the car or at home without having to look for the book.
Book or Movie?.......2007-05-16
Well the book is far superior to the simple plots of the movies. But there is Matt Damon....
This version of the "Bourne Trilogy" gets a lively reading by Darren McGavin. It will keep you at the edge of your seat.
So, for eye candy go see the movies....
For the edge of your seat reading stick with the book.
Good item.......2005-07-06
Shipping was a bit delayed, but item arrived on time for father's day. Good overall--would recommend.
How is it possible to botch a book on tape?.......2005-04-12
I thought it wasn't possible, but Darren McGavin managed it. He mumbles, yes actaully mumbles his way through a performance for which the sole qualification is elocution. I don't care if he played the dad in Billy Madison. This is doubly frustrating, as the volumes are so heavily abridged, that missing a line is like missing 100 pages from the printed work. Oh yeah, and the musical cues dispersed throughout the reading to "heighten the tension" are stupid, just plain dumb.

The Cream of Ludlum's Crop.......2002-04-08
Ludlum has been hailed as the virtual originator of the Superthriller, and with these three books, it is difficult to aruge that fact. I'll review these books individually:
#1 The Holcroft Covenant takes the 'Nazi Conspiracy' to the next level. Although dated (just a bit) this novel sweeps you up after a slow beginning, but when the wheels finally hits the pavement, make sure to be belted in, 'cuz this is a fantastic ride. In the closing days of WWII the Nazi's forge a desperate plan which plants the seed of the rise of the Fourth Reich sometime in the 70's, and will be put into motion unwittingly, by a pawn who despises everything the Nazi's ever stood for. Scary and well worth the effort, 'the Holcroft Covenant' is one of Ludlum's best.
#2 The Materese Circle was my 1st Ludlum novel way back in the early 80's, and is still one of my all-time favorite novels. During the Cold War nobody -- NOBODY could write a more compelling spy story, and this one easily ranks (for me) as Ludlums all-time best spy story. But it is much more than just spy vs spy...in this novel, Ludlum pits rival spy vs. rival spy working together to take on an ancient Mob which is alive and well and ready to launch the unthinkable. Do NOT think that the sequel (the Materese Countdown) even comes CLOSE to this masterpice, 'cuz it just plain falls flat by comparison.
#3 The Bourne Identity has to be one of the most clever plot-driven stories that ANYONE has come up with in the past century.
An unknown man is fished out of the Mediterranean Sea riddled with bullets, barely alive. Nursed back to health by an alcoholic doctor, who notices that this mysterious man has had plastic surgery to alter his looks, has a small micro-film hidden under his skin and has also noted that he has NO IDEA who he is. Using the micro-film to guide him, he ends up in Switzerland where he is recognized by an angry man waving a gun in absolute fright claiming that he had been killed...and our poor protagonist begins the flight of his life fleeing from assassins who want him dead, but still suffering from amnesia, he can't understand the WHY...nor does he accept all the evidence that points to him as an international professional hired killer. Top notch entertainment and believe it or not, Ludlum's 2nd Bourne novel was just as good (if not a little better).
All in all these are three exceptional examples of Robert Ludlum at his absolute best...and for anyone who knows this author, you KNOW that Ludlum at his best puts all the rest to shame. While it is true that since the end of the Cold War Ludlum's novels have been, shall we say, less than up to his usual excellence, but his final two novels have been MUCH better (The Prometheus Deception & The Sigma Protocol). We who admire and love Ludlum so much realize that when he passed away, so did one of the finest authors of the 20th Century. He WILL be missed, especially when I pick up another spy novel and invariably compare it to the Master, who will no doubt surpass everything yet to come.
Three cliff-hanging & fast-paced great novels.......1997-10-23
To combine three great novels by one great writer, what a treat! The Holcraft Covenant, is about an young American architect with German bloodline lured back to Germany by Neo-Nazis to claim the secret fund left by Nazi for their new world order purpose. Highly tensified book! The Materese Circle is a even better treat. Double Action packed and played by two top agents from Russia and America. Very very good. The Bourne Identity is also a great book about an American agent trying very hard to get his memory and identity and finding his true love during the struggle. Very very good!
