Book Description
A powerful new model for employee performance improvement
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"You have a bad attitude about your job."
"You need to change your priorities."
"You don't understand how we do things around here."
When negative feedback damages an employee's self-image, ego and motivation, the employee often gets madand blames the messenger. It doesn't take long for managers to learn not to be the bearers of bad tidings if they can possibly avoid it.
This book explores the limitations of traditional evaluation systems and introduces positive, alternative approaches including a new concept, Self-Directed Feedback.
Now you can offer employees all the performance information they need to grow personally and professionally.
Using forms, questionnaires, case studies, and action plans, the author presents step-by-step guidelines to make feedback about the negative side of performance easier to giveand easier to swallow.
Here's a brief outline of some of the chapters:
Making Performance Feedback Meaningful10 common pitfalls of performance systems
Feedback Perspectivesthe leverage perspective, matters of degree, politics of performance feedback, halos and horns revisited, guidelines for giving negative feedback
Feedback Consequencesformal and informal recognition, psychological effects of performance feedback, truth is a point of view, almost perfect, self concepts
Levels of Performance Feedbackno feedback, no formal feedback or documentation, formal performance feedback including personalized communications, 360-degree feedback, team feedback
Self-Directed Feedbackhow it works, learning to accept it, designing your self-directed feedback plan, developing self-directed feedback questions
Book Description
Feedback is an important person-to-person communication skill. Teach managers and supervisors to utilize it well. This applicable guide provides knowledge on how to assert goal-oriented, detailed feedback for improved reception, how to handle difficult feedback situations, and how to receive and accept good and bad feedback.
Customer Reviews:
Simple but Thorough.......2006-01-02
This book is simple but very effective. The examples given help to provide understanding. I would recommend it as a reference to keep at the office. Most of the concepts overlap with the same I have found in other similar books but this is easier to read and understand without a lot of extra "fluff". The price is steep though.

The Art of Giving and Receiving Feedback
Shirley Poertner & Karen Massetti Miller
If you are in search of a practical how to guide regarding feedback this book will meet your demands. Organizations weave a complex web of infrastructures making feedback a difficult aspect of a managers growing list of responsibilities. Poertner and Massetti-Miller have taken a "back to the basics" approach in writing this book and avoid the buzzwords like 360-degree feedback and opt for a how to practical guide regarding feedback. The information discussed provides the reader with self-assessment and goal setting activities in order to better relate with the topics discussed. The self-assessment opens the door to a wide variety of topics that will make feedback easier to give and receive. There are many helpful diagrams and examples relating to common workplace feedback situations that help relate the material to the "real world".
The book will take you through the necessary steps to effectively give and receive effective feedback. A brief outline of the chapters is as follows:
Chapter 1: The Power of Feedback *Definitions, characteristics, and an explanation of ineffective types of feedback.
Chapter 2: Useful Feedback is Detailed Feedback *Identifies the importance, features, and the roles of those who are giving and receiving detailed feedback.
Chapter 3: Planning Effective Feedback *Explores the importance of planning feedback and helps develop a plan to prepare detailed feedback.
Chapter 4: Steps for Giving Effective Feedback *Provides the who, what, when, where, and how information. Discusses reinforcement and how to get past defensiveness and a host of other useful information regarding the delivery of effective feedback.
Chapter 5: Steps for Receiving Feedback Effectively *An important chapter that explains the importance of not only talking but listening as well. An important aspect of feedback often overlooked.
Chapter 6: Feedback and Communication Styles *Identifies and explains the different aspects of how people communicate and offers insight on how to deal with different styles of communicators.
Chapter 7: Handling Difficult Feedback Situations *Not all feedback is good and this chapter deals with the bad. There are many practical ideas offered that help shape the feedback situation.
Chapter 8: Developing Your Feedback Skills *As this is the final chapter there is a section that deals with the need to reassess current feedback skills. Also outlined is a tutorial that will help create an action plan to help develop better feedback skills.
The authors have created a practical and informative amount of information that is presented in a "how to" manner. If developing effective feedback skill is on the future agenda this book will make things a little easier. Each chapter has side-notes that makes the book a great reference tool for future reflection. If you are looking to learn more about the feedback process including the 360-degree feedback process this book is a great place to start exploring the process.

Save Your Money.......2006-07-14
There is little insight in this book that people don't instinctively understand and either act or do not act on. The primary message of the book is to communicate problems with other people in a diplomatic way and realize that you may be the problem too. If you understand this you do not need to buy the book.
A Must Have - Must Read Book.......2002-08-24
Here is my bias - this is a must have book for anyone in the coaching, management consulting, facilitation or training business. In fact it is a must read for everyone. The authors follow a sensible and clear route that would be a benefit to any reader. It is small, easy to read and powerful. The vignettes display excellent examples and the exercises at the end of each short chapter are practical. The italics of fantasy and fact regarding "feedback" makes for an even faster read. You can browse through it quickly to find the passages where you wish to focus.
The book is short and sweet enough but you can find it completely summarized in three pages in the Epilogue. If it sounds as if there isn't much meat to this book, think again. It is deceptively challenging but not daunting. It makes a great reference book that I like to come back to time and time again.

Practical Psychology in One Lesson: "What Did You Say...".......2001-08-30
If I had the power to transport one book back in time and send it to myself, this would be the one. This is the book I needed when I became a people manager. It's also the book I needed when I began to raise my kids. In fact, I can't think of a time in my life when I did not wish I had more of the skills this book teaches. A simple but very deep book that causes a new level of understanding about how to talk to people with each reading. The authors draw on the best ideas from the great psychologists and show how to use them practically in everyday interactions. The short volume is easy to read and full of examples that can be immediately applied. In my humble opinion, this book is indespensible when managing people at work and managing close relationships at home. The conversational and entertaining style is a plus.

Book Description
This collection of papers will address the question "What is the Magnetospheric Cusp?" and what is its role in the coupling of the solar wind to the magnetosphere as well as its role in the processes of particle transport and energization within the magnetosphere. The cusps have traditionally been described as narrow funnel-shaped regions that provide a focus of the Chapman-Ferraro currents that flow on the magnetopause, a boundary between the cavity dominated by the geomagnetic field (i.e., the magnetosphere) and the external region of the interplanetary medium. Measurements from a number of recent satellite programs have shown that the cusp is not confined to a narrow region near local noon but appears to encompass a large portion of the dayside high-latitude magnetosphere. It appears that the cusp is a major source region for the production of energetic charged particles for the magnetosphere. This book will be of great interest to scientists in Space Physics as well as to those working in research organizations in governments and industries, university departments of physics, astronomy, space physics, and geophysics. Part of this book has already been published in a journal.

Customer Reviews:
Not a good textbook.......2007-03-11
I had this book required for a class, and although it certainly has a lot of information, it is a very poor textbook especially for an introduction. There is WAY too much information on some subjects and unnecessary detail. It reads more like a collection of peer reviewed articles than it does a textbook. The authors need to learn to HIGHLIGHT the important results and summarize information in a concise way. Even graphs are presented in very confusing manner (variable symbols not consistent in comparable graphs. Many authors also makes for different style changes...
Then again, I have little background in biology, and only moderate interest in the subject, so that might slant my opinion.
Great Text.......2007-02-09
This is a great text that sums up the body's response to biomaterials. It has good introductory sections to materials science issues, tissue engineering, and immunology.
Big book.......2006-12-12
It's hard to cover EVERYTHING related to biomaterials in one book, but the topics that are covered in this book are done so in detail. I don't really like how the book is pretty much a collection of works, but I understand how this allows each topic to be covered by an expert in that field. Overall, I find this book to be very useful in all of my classes.
Hard to read but book compiled with great care and detail.......2005-06-16
I must agree, it is probabily not the easiest book, you can pick up and read. It is voluminous, information is very dry, might be difficult to 'make notes' from this book. It may not be structured the way, you might normally find in most of the textbook. But having said that the information is compiled with great care and extraordinary detail. It contains the cutting edge information you can find out about biomaterials. For example, each section made up of 10-15 pages is purely written straight out of the latest journal articles.
It is definetely the best reference you can find for biomaterials, but if this is your main textbook, it might be a little hard for beginners with no background in material science to understand the concept right away. I was personally surprised to see that biomaterials is such an extensively branch in biomedical engineering and there is lot of scope. I think this book will help you realize that!!!
Biomedical Engineering Student.......2002-03-21
...I was not impressed with the content of this book because of mistakes made in the data it reported ie. that polymers can't form crystalline structures. I also found that the equations presented in the text did not have detailed information and at times the explaination of how to use the equations were slight.
I was also disappointed in the fact that I had to buy a xerox copy from the book store on campus (my financal aid would not pay for a book purchased anywhere else) because the publisher stopped print production before the class started which left myself and several other students "hanging" with only the option of purchasing a cheap copy for nearly the price of the original. Now I am left with an expensive book that I can't even you as reference material for future courses nor can I sell it because it is a copy and lastly because it is no longer in print.

Handbook of Biomaterials Evaluation : Scientific, Technical,.......2001-01-31
My first introduction to this book was in a biophysics course at University of Buffalo in 1991. Von Recum's text was assigned reading and in my opinion remains a must read for anyone working in the world of biomaterials science.
This book is an indepth and informative review of practically every aspect of biologically implantable materials. It covers a spectrum of topics beginning with basic scientific principles of material science and biocompatibility, through many aspects of experimental design, and on to issues regarding FDA regulations and approval for biomaterials research.
Von Recum has edited a book that is useful and extremely informative to students, clinicians, researchers, and research administrators alike. I highly recommend this book as a valuable reference for just about anyone in the biomedical and scientific community.

My mind is still reeling over the concepts in this groundbreaking book. Stein's lifetime work has culminated in nothing short of a radical paradigm shift in physics, philosophy, quantum mechanics, and the very foundation of the universe and life itself. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in these subjects. I've come across very few geniuses in my life...and I firmly believe Stein is one of them.

Book Description
In this stunning debut novel, Agu, a young boy in an unnamed West African nation, is recruited into a unit of guerrilla fighters as civil war engulfs his country. Haunted by his father's own death at the hands of militants, Agu is vulnerable to the dangerous yet paternal nature of his new commander. While the war rages on, Agu becomes increasingly divorced from the life he had known before the conflict started—a life of school friends, church services, and time with his family still intact.
In a powerful, strikingly original voice that vividly captures Agu's youth and confusion, Uzodinma Iweala has produced a harrowing, inventive, and deeply affecting novel.

War in Africa.......2007-07-29
A first-person acccount of the experiences of a young boy, forced into a war. Vivid and credible. Hard to set it down before finishing. Then impossible to forget it. (We all need to be aware of the forces that are displayed here!)
I Am Killing, Killing, Killing.......2007-05-16
In a special wing in the House of Fiction there lives a notable band of young characters and child narrators. They began taking up residence in the Romantic era, trailing clouds of glory, singing songs of innocence, an implicit critique of the hyper-rationalistic Enlightenment which poets like Blake and Wordsworth rebelled against.
A generation later, Dickens reserved rooms for young men such as Oliver Twist and David Copperfield. Masterfully using the third person narrative style, Dickens shadowed these youngsters through their daily lives, telling their stories as a means to shame a complacent bourgeoisie into closing the workhouses, reforming the factory system and putting into place child labor laws.
Then ol' Huck Finn arrived. Unlike these earlier protagonists, Huck actually inhabited the role of narrator. Armed with a rough but ready moral compass that guided him through the fallen world of southern slavery, Huck related his complex and redemptive tale in his own frontier first-person vernacular.
One could venture to say that every era gets the young characters and narrators (and social critics) it deserves. And here's where "Beasts of No Nation" comes in. Through Agu, our first-person child narrator, we experience the brutal excitement and mind-bending horror of guerilla warfare as experienced by a child soldier in West Africa. A pre-adolescent boy orphaned by war and drafted at the blade of a machete to join an anonymous war, Agu tells us his horrific story in present tense pidgin English.
So why does "Beasts of No Nation," fail to measure up to anything approaching these great works of fiction? It's my opinion that the book's structure, told partly in flashbacks interferes. Because we are immediately thrust into the story of his forced conversion to murderous child soldier within the first few pages, we know immediately what the story is about. In those great classics cited earlier, the stories unfold in such a way that we come to know the character or the narrator first before we recognize where our journey is taking us. Huck, for instance, doesn't tell us in the first few pages that he's going to help Jim to freedom, then light out for the Territory. We accompany him on his journey, and discover as he does the meaning of that journey.
Perhaps if we'd come to know Agu before his country is plunged into civil war, gotten to know him and his social circumstances more fully, experienced the horrific ruptures the war brought to his village, the book might have more effectively communicated the blood drenched madness of war.
Or, if he had used the strategy Faulkner used in "The Sound and the Fury" where Benjy and Quentin related the story of their sister Cassie in broken shards, half-mad ramblings or looping indirection, the style might have communicated this disruption. Instead we have Agu's present tense pidgin which never reaches the demented poetic heights of Faulkner.
There's better novels to read if you want to get a visceral understanding of war: "The Red Badge of Courage," "All Quiet on the Western Front," "The Naked and the Dead," "Catch-22," "The Things They Carried" among many, many others.
Or for a truly brutal novel of war as told by a child narrator, try Jerzy Kozinski's "The Painted Bird" whose narrator coolly, robotically reports on the horrors he witnessed as he wandered through a ravaged Eastern Europe during WWII.
a universal language of conflict.......2007-04-02
Iweala's book is an introspective take on what geos on on the inside of those caught in rthe middle of all kinds of conflict.
The language of Agu is one that conveys innocence violated
Highly recommended.......2007-02-17
The abuse and systematic identity-destruction of this boy-child is stunning for its clarity in conveying the possibility of something that seems so impossible that it cannot even be imagined. Horrifying, compelling, dramatic. The ending suggests redemption, but it is hard to imagine that anyone ever fully overcomes such a horrendous experience. Iweala says in an interview in the back of the book that the "voice" of Agu is a character in itself. For whatever reason, I didn't want when I realized this book is his first to grant Iweala my uncritical support. But he won me over, i.e., I have to agree that the voice of Agu in this book is a remarkably creative literary achievement -- and not just for a debut novel. Sophisticated craftsmanship ... kind of scary coming from one so young, but also very impressive.
chilling and all too real.......2007-02-13
Anyone reading What is the What will also want to take notice of this spare, stark book. Our senses may be dulled by the endless headlines and staggering numbers, but this story of one boy soldier's journey humanizes horror in the same way that The Diary of Anne Frank did.
