Cosmological Parameters and the Evolution of the Universe (International Astronomical Union Symposia)
Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0792354591 |
Book Description
How old is our Universe? At what speed is our Universe expanding? Is our universe flat or curved? How is the hierarchical structure of the present Universe formed? The purpose of IAU Symposium 183 on the Cosmological Parameters and the Evolution of the Universe was to encourage a state-of-the-art discussion and assessment of cosmology by putting together the latest observational data and theoretical ideas on the evolution of the universe and cosmological parameters. In this volume, excellent reviews on these subjects by distinguished scientists are included. The first article by M.S. Longair, `Cosmological Parameters and the Evolution of the Universe: Progress and Prospect', is a magnificent general review which can be understood by non-specialists. The other reviews include Hubble Constants (W.L. Freedman, G.A. Tammann), Microwave Background Radiation (R.B. Partridge, N. Sugiyama), Galaxy Formation and Evolution (R.S. Ellis) and Alternative Cosmological Models (J.V. Narlikar). In addition to the reviews, recent observational and theoretical developments by outstanding active scientists are included.

Development of Large Scale Structure in the Universe (Lezione Fermiane)
Jeremiah P. Ostriker Manufacturer: Cambridge University Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0521423619 |
Book Description
This volume grew out of the 1988 Fermi lectures given by Professor Ostriker, and is concerned with cosmological models that take into account the large scale structure of the universe. He starts with homogeneous isotropic models of the universe and then, by considering perturbations, he leads us to modern cosmological theories of the large scale, such as superconducting strings. This will be an excellent companion for all those interested in the cosmology and the large scale nature of the universe.

Galaxies: Structure and Evolution
Roger J. Tayler Manufacturer: Crane Russak & Co ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items: ASIN: 0844813567 |
Book Description
This book is a quantitative introduction to what is known or theorized about the structure and evolution of galactic systems. It begins with a general introduction to galaxies and a summary of our empirical observations of galaxies in the universe, including our own. There are then three chapters on galactic structure: the manner in which motions of stars determine galactic shape, the determination of galactic masses, and the structure of discs in spirals. Galactic evolution, especially changes in chemical composition over time, is then covered. The book concludes with a discussion of the origin of galaxies and their relation to more general questions in cosmology. The presentation is sufficiently mathematical so that quantitative results can be discussed in detail. Throughout, the author stresses what are currently accepted results and what theories may need revision in what continues to be a rapidly developing subject.Customer Reviews:

Groups of Galaxies in the Nearby Universe: Proceedings of the ESO Workshop held at Santiago de Chile, December 5 - 9, 2005 (ESO Astrophysics Symposia)
Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Accessories:
ASIN: 3540711724 |
Book Description
For every galaxy in the field or in clusters, there are about three galaxies in groups. The Milky Way itself resides in a group, and groups can be found at high redshift. The current generation of 10-m class telescopes and space facilities allows the observation of the members of nearby groups with exquisite detail, and their properties can be correlated with the global properties of their host group. Groups in the local Universe offer us the chance to study galaxies in environments characterized by strong interactions. In the cosmological context, groups trace large-scale structures better than clusters, and the evolution of groups and clusters appears to be related. All these aspects of research on groups of galaxies are summarized in this book written by scientists working in various fields.

Stability of Collisionless Stellar Systems: Mechanisms for the Dynamical Structure of Galaxies (Astrophysics and Space Science Library)
P.L. Palmer Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0792324552 |
Book Description
Recent advances in our understanding of instabilities in galactic type systems have led to an unravelling of some of the mysteries of what determines the form galaxies take. This book focuses on the mathematical development of the subject, assuming no prior knowledge of it, with a strong emphasis on the underlying physical interpretation. This framework is used to discuss the most relevant instabilities which are believed to be closely involved in the way galaxies are formed, in a model independent manner. The relevant observed properties of galaxies that may be used to establish the role of these physical mechanisms are discussed.

Meta-Evolution: The Future of Life.......2001-06-22
The five extended chapters review the evidence for interpreting all phenomena, including- biological, social, technological and religious processes in evolutionary terms; finally extrapolating current trends into future outcomes.
Although a number of authors have attempted to extend the evolutionary paradigm to include areas such as behaviour, ideas and social development, none has attempted such a rigorous all-encompssing analysis.
The evidence as presented is compelling without being technical or tedious, allowing non-academic readers ready access to this exciting thesis, with immense philosophic as well as scientific significance for future generations.

The Future of Life: Meta-Evolution
David, Hunter Tow Manufacturer: Xlibris Corporation ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 1425726852 |
Book Description
The Future of Life: Meta-Evolution represents the first comprehensive formulation of the hypothesis that evolution is the unifying force underlying the dynamics of all processes in the universe, both organic and inorganic. These include all facets of human existence and civilisation- the sciences, technology, arts, humanities and religion. In essence, by applying quantum information, network and decision theory, it is demonstrated that an overarching evolutionary process shapes the spectrum of life and phenomena in the universe, as a generic paradigm beyond Darwin's original biology-based theory. The Theory of Evolution is undoubtedly the most powerful paradigm ever conceived by humans to explain their own existence. Since Darwin´s epoch-making treatise, 'Origin of Species', published in 1859, evolution has been centre-stage, universally recognised as the driving force in the emergence of modern humans from the genesis of life on this planet almost 4 billion years ago. However, despite its ubiquitous brilliance as the jewel in the crown of human intellectual achievement, the notion of evolution has never been developed to its full potential. It remains instead constrained within its biological cradle, often reduced in everyday connotation to its lowest common denominator of ´survival of the fittest´. The intention of this book to re-evaluate and expand the Darwinian model of evolution; to demonstrate that its current application is only the tip of the intellectual iceberg and that by combining its formidable biological principles with those of decision complexity, network, quantum and information theory, it emerges as an incalculably deeper and richer model than previously contemplated. It will be demonstrated that the evolutionary engine which drives biological development, also drives all other dynamic adaptive processes- the physical, social, cognitive, economic, political and technological and is in fact the major dynamic governing the Universe, past present and future. It is further proposed to demonstrate that recent developments in artificial intelligence and ubiquitous computing through the Internet, mark the next crucial stage in life's evolution, involving the inevitable symbiosis of vast computational intelligence with the human mind. The major hypothesis developed in this book, of a global all-encompassing Theory of Evolution, coupled with its potential for realising the emancipation of human intelligence and potential, provides a vastly more powerful paradigm for exploring the Future of Life than current scientific scenarios. The resulting Omega state of infinite knowledge and wisdom which is proposed, has been actively championed by a number of eminent 19th and 20th century philosophers such as Teillhard de Chardin, Henri Bergson, Schelling, Alfred Whitehead, Samuel Alexander and more recently by the leading physicist and futurist- Professor Frank Tipler. However to date no equivalent scientific framework for supporting such a hypothesis has been provided. In conclusion, The Future of Life: Meta-Evolution has been written not as an academic text but as primarily a non-technical review of the evidence to support such a hypothesis, in much the same vein as other recent publications in the popular science/philosophy genre. It is hoped that this approach will therefore provide a window into the wider evolutionary debate for the general reader interested in one of the most critical emerging paradigm shifts of the 21st century.

International Tables for Crystallography, Volume B: Reciprocal Space (International Tables for X-Ray Crystallography)
Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items:
ASIN: 0792321898 |
Book Description
The general purpose of Volume B of the International Tables for Crystallography is to present the user/reader with competent and useful accounts of the numerous aspects of reciprocal space in crystallographic research. After an introductory chapter, Part 1 presents the reader with an account of structure factor formalisms, an extensive treatment of the theory, algorithms and crystallographic applications of Fourier methods and a treatment of symmetry in reciprocal space. In Part 2 of the volume these general accounts are followed by detailed expositions of crystallographic statistics, direct methods, Patterson techniques, isomorphous replacement and anomalous scattering, and treatments of the role of electron microscopy and diffraction in crystal structure determination. Part 3 deals with applications of reciprocal space to molecular geometry and `best' plane calculations; it contains a treatment of the principles of molecular graphics and modelling and their applications, and concludes with the presentation of a convergence-acceleration method, of importance in the computation of approximate crystal potentials. The fourth Part contains treatments of various diffuse scattering phenomena arising from crystal dynamics, disorder and low dimensionality (liquid crystals), and an exposition of the underlying theories and/or experimental evidence. The volume concludes with an introductory treatment of the theory of interaction of radiation with matter, the so-called dynamical theory. Insofar as it was possible, effects due to all three major diffraction techniques (X-rays, neutrons and electrons) are considered. The volume is a vital addition to the library of scientists engaged in crystal structure determination, crystallographic computing, crystal physics and other fields of crystallogaphic research. Graduate students specializing in crystallography will find much material suitable for self study and a rich source of references to the relevant literature.
