          Book Description

How old is our Universe? At what speed is our Universe expanding? Is our universe flat or curved? How is the hierarchical structure of the present Universe formed? The purpose of IAU Symposium 183 on the Cosmological Parameters and the Evolution of the Universe was to encourage a state-of-the-art discussion and assessment of cosmology by putting together the latest observational data and theoretical ideas on the evolution of the universe and cosmological parameters. In this volume, excellent reviews on these subjects by distinguished scientists are included. The first article by M.S. Longair, `Cosmological Parameters and the Evolution of the Universe: Progress and Prospect', is a magnificent general review which can be understood by non-specialists. The other reviews include Hubble Constants (W.L. Freedman, G.A. Tammann), Microwave Background Radiation (R.B. Partridge, N. Sugiyama), Galaxy Formation and Evolution (R.S. Ellis) and Alternative Cosmological Models (J.V. Narlikar). In addition to the reviews, recent observational and theoretical developments by outstanding active scientists are included.

            Book Description

This volume grew out of the 1988 Fermi lectures given by Professor Ostriker, and is concerned with cosmological models that take into account the large scale structure of the universe. He starts with homogeneous isotropic models of the universe and then, by considering perturbations, he leads us to modern cosmological theories of the large scale, such as superconducting strings. This will be an excellent companion for all those interested in the cosmology and the large scale nature of the universe.

              Book Description

This book is a quantitative introduction to what is known or theorized about the structure and evolution of galactic systems. It begins with a general introduction to galaxies and a summary of our empirical observations of galaxies in the universe, including our own. There are then three chapters on galactic structure: the manner in which motions of stars determine galactic shape, the determination of galactic masses, and the structure of discs in spirals. Galactic evolution, especially changes in chemical composition over time, is then covered. The book concludes with a discussion of the origin of galaxies and their relation to more general questions in cosmology. The presentation is sufficiently mathematical so that quantitative results can be discussed in detail. Throughout, the author stresses what are currently accepted results and what theories may need revision in what continues to be a rapidly developing subject.

              Customer Reviews:

              3 out of 5 stars Semi-popular book .......2007-03-13

This book uses a semi-popular approach. The author covers lots of topics related to galactic structure and evolution; including the most usual subjects: observations, morphology, stellar and galactic dynamics, chemical composition and cosmology. But also covers other less popular issues such as interstellar material, cosmic rays, chemical evolution, etc. However, due to the limited size of the book, none of these topics is treated in great detail. The book is written from a qualitative rather than a quantitative perspective. The mathematical content of the book is very superficial and the few formulas included are not very clarifying.

The author always keeps close to the observational phenomena. This is very satisfying since for every new phenomena introduced there is always a comparison between the predictions and the observations.

The book is very entertaining and easy to read. It is aimed at readers who want to go one step beyond the mass of popular books dealing with galaxies. A summary section at the end of every chapter is very convenient to help the reader refresh the learnt knowledge. The price is also great.

                Book Description

For every galaxy in the field or in clusters, there are about three galaxies in groups. The Milky Way itself resides in a group, and groups can be found at high redshift. The current generation of 10-m class telescopes and space facilities allows the observation of the members of nearby groups with exquisite detail, and their properties can be correlated with the global properties of their host group. Groups in the local Universe offer us the chance to study galaxies in environments characterized by strong interactions. In the cosmological context, groups trace large-scale structures better than clusters, and the evolution of groups and clusters appears to be related. All these aspects of research on groups of galaxies are summarized in this book written by scientists working in various fields.

                        Book Description

Recent advances in our understanding of instabilities in galactic type systems have led to an unravelling of some of the mysteries of what determines the form galaxies take. This book focuses on the mathematical development of the subject, assuming no prior knowledge of it, with a strong emphasis on the underlying physical interpretation. This framework is used to discuss the most relevant instabilities which are believed to be closely involved in the way galaxies are formed, in a model independent manner. The relevant observed properties of galaxies that may be used to establish the role of these physical mechanisms are discussed.
The book also includes a chapter discussing numerical simulation techniques, with attention paid to their limitations and to recent advances in this approach. It is demonstrated that recent developments in computer hardware enable a detailed comparison of simulations with analysis. Thus the simulations extend our physical understanding beyond the limitations of the analysis.
The book is intended for use by postgraduate students and researchers in the areas of cosmology, extragalactic astronomy and dynamics.

                              Book Description

Meta-Evolution: The Future of Life, postulates evolution as the primary driver of all processes governing Life and the Universe- past, present and future.

Based on information and systems theory, it provides the first comprehensive framework for a Unified Theory of Evolution; a radical new hypothesis defining the limits of the evolutionary paradigm and its implications for the future of humanity.

David Tow's book is quite remarkable. He takes the most imaginative and advanced hypotheses of science and integrates them with philosophy, religion and history. It is truly an impressive effort. Tow drags us kicking and screaming into a new consciousness, a consciousness which compels a rudimentary and painful reevaluation of the notions of life, deity, ourselves, our universe and our destiny. The book deserves a large audience even if he is ultimately wrong. Tow's ideas point to an exciting and optimistic future.

5 out of 5 stars Meta-Evolution: The Future of Life.......2001-06-22

This book provides a radically expanded but easily understood view of the process of evolution beyond biological Darwinism.

The five extended chapters review the evidence for interpreting all phenomena, including- biological, social, technological and religious processes in evolutionary terms; finally extrapolating current trends into future outcomes.

Although a number of authors have attempted to extend the evolutionary paradigm to include areas such as behaviour, ideas and social development, none has attempted such a rigorous all-encompssing analysis.

The evidence as presented is compelling without being technical or tedious, allowing non-academic readers ready access to this exciting thesis, with immense philosophic as well as scientific significance for future generations.

                                Book Description

The Future of Life: Meta-Evolution represents the first comprehensive formulation of the hypothesis that evolution is the unifying force underlying the dynamics of all processes in the universe, both organic and inorganic. These include all facets of human existence and civilisation- the sciences, technology, arts, humanities and religion. In essence, by applying quantum information, network and decision theory, it is demonstrated that an overarching evolutionary process shapes the spectrum of life and phenomena in the universe, as a generic paradigm beyond Darwin's original biology-based theory. The Theory of Evolution is undoubtedly the most powerful paradigm ever conceived by humans to explain their own existence. Since Darwin´s epoch-making treatise, 'Origin of Species', published in 1859, evolution has been centre-stage, universally recognised as the driving force in the emergence of modern humans from the genesis of life on this planet almost 4 billion years ago. However, despite its ubiquitous brilliance as the jewel in the crown of human intellectual achievement, the notion of evolution has never been developed to its full potential. It remains instead constrained within its biological cradle, often reduced in everyday connotation to its lowest common denominator of ´survival of the fittest´. The intention of this book to re-evaluate and expand the Darwinian model of evolution; to demonstrate that its current application is only the tip of the intellectual iceberg and that by combining its formidable biological principles with those of decision complexity, network, quantum and information theory, it emerges as an incalculably deeper and richer model than previously contemplated. It will be demonstrated that the evolutionary engine which drives biological development, also drives all other dynamic adaptive processes- the physical, social, cognitive, economic, political and technological and is in fact the major dynamic governing the Universe, past present and future. It is further proposed to demonstrate that recent developments in artificial intelligence and ubiquitous computing through the Internet, mark the next crucial stage in life's evolution, involving the inevitable symbiosis of vast computational intelligence with the human mind. The major hypothesis developed in this book, of a global all-encompassing Theory of Evolution, coupled with its potential for realising the emancipation of human intelligence and potential, provides a vastly more powerful paradigm for exploring the Future of Life than current scientific scenarios. The resulting Omega state of infinite knowledge and wisdom which is proposed, has been actively championed by a number of eminent 19th and 20th century philosophers such as Teillhard de Chardin, Henri Bergson, Schelling, Alfred Whitehead, Samuel Alexander and more recently by the leading physicist and futurist- Professor Frank Tipler. However to date no equivalent scientific framework for supporting such a hypothesis has been provided. In conclusion, The Future of Life: Meta-Evolution has been written not as an academic text but as primarily a non-technical review of the evidence to support such a hypothesis, in much the same vein as other recent publications in the popular science/philosophy genre. It is hoped that this approach will therefore provide a window into the wider evolutionary debate for the general reader interested in one of the most critical emerging paradigm shifts of the 21st century.

                                  Book Description

The general purpose of Volume B of the International Tables for Crystallography is to present the user/reader with competent and useful accounts of the numerous aspects of reciprocal space in crystallographic research. After an introductory chapter, Part 1 presents the reader with an account of structure factor formalisms, an extensive treatment of the theory, algorithms and crystallographic applications of Fourier methods and a treatment of symmetry in reciprocal space. In Part 2 of the volume these general accounts are followed by detailed expositions of crystallographic statistics, direct methods, Patterson techniques, isomorphous replacement and anomalous scattering, and treatments of the role of electron microscopy and diffraction in crystal structure determination. Part 3 deals with applications of reciprocal space to molecular geometry and `best' plane calculations; it contains a treatment of the principles of molecular graphics and modelling and their applications, and concludes with the presentation of a convergence-acceleration method, of importance in the computation of approximate crystal potentials. The fourth Part contains treatments of various diffuse scattering phenomena arising from crystal dynamics, disorder and low dimensionality (liquid crystals), and an exposition of the underlying theories and/or experimental evidence. The volume concludes with an introductory treatment of the theory of interaction of radiation with matter, the so-called dynamical theory. Insofar as it was possible, effects due to all three major diffraction techniques (X-rays, neutrons and electrons) are considered. The volume is a vital addition to the library of scientists engaged in crystal structure determination, crystallographic computing, crystal physics and other fields of crystallogaphic research. Graduate students specializing in crystallography will find much material suitable for self study and a rich source of references to the relevant literature.

Chocolate-shop manager Lee McKinney has had enough of party planner Julie Singletree's cutesy e-mails. Then somebody actually kills the woman, putting everyone on her mailing list on edge. As their connections to the murder emerge, so do more attacks. Lee smells a rat-and it's not made of chocolate. And if she doesn't want to be permanently deleted, it's up to her to trap it.

This title is fifth in the Chocoholic Mysteries series.

I was very pleased with the twist and turns in this book that kept you guessing as to who the murder was and why they committed the murder. I happily sat and read this book in one sitting. I'm looking forward to reading the next book in the series.

5 out of 5 stars Such an engaging series!.......2007-05-07

I read the sixth book first and then purchased the first five and I highly recommend this "cozy mystery" series as engaging, fun and even poignant and touching at times. I tend to guess the outcome fairly early with this series, but it really doesn't detract at all from the reading experience and finding out the details of how it all fits together is always enjoyable.

This wasn't my favorite book in the series, but I was certainly glad to have read it and think the series is so enjoyable that even my least favorite would be a 5!

4 out of 5 stars I've just discovered Joanna Carl!.......2006-06-15

So, you ask, where have you been? Well, there are just so many books to read and not enough time! Joanna Carl (a.k.a. Eve K. Sandstrom) has been on my list for some time and I'm glad I finally got to her. Being a Michigander myself with a couple connections on the Lake Michigan side of the state, it was fun reading about an area with which I am so familiar. I also thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. Carl's style of writing and her sense of humor are quite appealing. Her other Chocolate mysteries, beginning with The Chocolate Puppy Puzzle (Dec 04), will make fun additional reading.

TCMT is written in the first person; the setting is mid-January in the fictitious village of Warner Pier, Michigan, tucked into the Saugatuck/Douglas area of the state, south of Holland (which is mentioned frequently in the story) on Lake Michigan. One Julie Singletree, who is a bit of an enigma to the others, has been instrumental in the formation of a group called the Seventh Major Food Group. Shortly after the story begins Julie is murdered. Julie, young, attractive, and seemingly effervescent, was also a very private person. She was adept at getting details about the lives of others out of them, but she shared very little about herself, but who would want to kill her? When strange things begin to happen with the computers of the other members of the SMFG and another one of its members, Carolyn Rose, turns up dead, the strangeness of the situation builds. Lee and buddy, Lindy, set about finding the killer.

I laughed out loud on page 47 when Carl describes the things boyfriend, Joe, likes to eat: meatloaf, hot dogs and sauerkraut, porcupine balls, and even tuna casserole. These are very typical Midwestern, moderate-income family meals, and among my favorites as a child (my kids, too). Anybody remember porcupine balls??? Lee's from Texas originally, so she has broaded Joe's meal horizon with taco salad and chicken fried steak.

TCMT was fun to read with the intermittent descriptions of chocolate treats created at TenHuis Chocolade, the chocolate anecdotes and humor, the characters, and the mystery itself. Lee and Lindy get themselves in some frightening situations as the killer attempts to do them in as well.

Another good beach and porch sittin' book for summer reading. JoAnna Carl's next book, The Chocolate Bridal Bash, is due out August 1, 2006. I'll be getting a copy!

                                  5 out of 5 stars A Sweet Little Mystery.......2006-02-24

After having finished, "Mad River Road" by Joy Fielding, (which was a sinister suspense novel...albeit a good one!), I switched gears to this lighthearted whodunit and found it quite charming.

Our main character is Lee McKinney, manager of her Aunt Nettie's chocolate shop in Warner Pier, Michigan. She is bright, attractive, likeable and engaged to Joe Woodyard. Lee, along with fellow community members in the fancy foods industry, are recepients of unwanted daily inspirational email from party planner, Julie Singletree. When Julie is found murdered, it's not Lee's sweet tooth, but her nose for mystery that lands her smack in the middle of a murder investigation.
Can Lee find the killer before she becomes the next victim and still find time to plan her wedding to Joe?

This is the first book I have read in the "Chocoholic Mystery Series" by Joanna Carl. I found the tidbits and quotes on chocolate sprinkled throughout the book a nice little touch.
I look forward to reading the others in the series.

If you enjoy the small town comraderie of Cabot Cove from the "Murder She Wrote" mysteries, you will love this book!
