Book Description
The application of statistical methods to physics is essential. This unique book on statistical physics offers an advanced approach with numerous applications to the modern problems students are confronted with. Therefore the text contains more concepts and methods in statistics than the student would need for statistical mechanics alone. Methods from mathematical statistics and stochastics for the analysis of data are discussed as well. The book is divided in two parts focusing first on the modelling of statistical systems then on the analysis of these systems. Problems with hints for solution help the students to deepen their knowledge.

interesting book about aliens.......2002-01-31
I enjoyed reading this book - it's very informative about Aliens and since I am a fan of the show X-Files, I thought it would be worthwhile. It was an easy read and my students seem to enjoy reading it, as well. If you teach middle school and your students like to read up on aliens or ghosts, this series is for you.

Customer Reviews:
A different kind of Western.......2007-09-24
Loaded with Native American myth, mysteries, and ruins, Thunderhead takes you on a horseback journey into discovery, treachery, and death. Spooky, informative, and consistently thrilling, Thunderhead is a must read.
Really good fiction where you can learn something.......2007-09-16
I sometimes come across people who say, "I don't read fiction because it's not real, you can't learn anything from it." While this statement can be true with poorly written novels, nothing could be further from the truth with "Thunderhead" by Lincoln Child and Douglas Preston. Not only is this an exceptionally well written piece of fiction where many readers will have the opportunity to sponge up some masterful use of the English language, "Thunderhead" is steeped in historical fact and historical speculation about southwestern Indian/Puebloan civilizations. Oh boy, what a difference this is from Lincoln Child's mediocre solo effort I just read, "Deep Storm." Once again scribing with his partner (whom I think also fails to reach peak form writing alone) they've fashioned a work with dimensional beings, not all good, not all bad, and not all linear; and the journey they take, an archeological trek on horseback through treacherous mountainous canyons and valleys of the southwest, every mile fraught with danger, adventure, and terror, is simply spellbinding. This is the best read I've had in a long while. Highly recommend.
read it twice.......2007-09-01
I read Thunderhead a few years ago, however, I lost the novel in a recent move. I bought it again and spent two days reading it again. Great plot and wonderful writing.
Edge-of-the-seat plot, irritating characters.......2007-07-26
The characters in Preston and Child's books ("The Relic," "Mount Dragon" "Reliquary," "Riptide") may sometimes make you wince but the plots are intriguingly strange and the actions scenes rip.
The Anasazi background of "Thunderhead," provides the hook and the dry-west setting as young, ambitious archaeologist Nora Kelly survives an attack by apparently superhuman beasts at her father's deserted ranch, only to discover, while making her escape, the letter their guttural voices had demanded.
It's from her father, missing 16 years, and contains directions to the greatest discovery since Tutankhamen - the fabled sacred city of the lost civilization of the Anasazi. Nora gets to head up an expedition of older and more obnoxious experts, along with a wisecracking journalist and the expedition funder's gorgeous and talented daughter.
The strife gets irritating (certain of these people could use a nightime visit from the "beasts") but the trek heads into mountainous desert so remote and forbidding, it can be reached only by horses and, finally, only on foot. Treachery, murder, ancient magic, ferocious storms, breathtaking treasures and Anasazi secrets propel the reader through a story that grips.
Another fun book.......2007-06-25
They have done it again! This book has everything we've come to love about our authors. It is intelligent, well-written, and full of adventure. A great read! I love how they overlap their characters throughout their different books. We get more of Smithback and are introduced to Nora Kelly in Thunderhead.

Customer Reviews:
Outstanding! Captivating and Inspirational.......2007-07-11
I've been reading Mary O'Hara's books since I was ten years old. Like many others who have posted reviews, I went through a phase where I carried the books with me, reading and re-reading them. As a great lover of horses, I found the stories are beautifully written and the reader may begin to think of the McLaughlin family as real people. The way that the author describes the horses and other animals, the beauty of the land, and the lives of the people has and will stay with me in a positive way my entire life. I recently purchased all three books on line to share with my teenage daughter, but also to read them again myself. I am well over forty now, but found the books as refreshing and irresistable as ever, with a new appreciation for the sensitivity that a mature person can relate to better than a teenager. An excellent and captivating story that young and mature readers alike will enjoy.
Hast thou clothed the horse's neck with thunder?.......2006-05-15
I reread "Thunderhead" after a hiatus of forty years, and was surprised that I enjoyed it even more as an adult. I had to wonder how I made it through the parts about Rob and Nell's financial difficulties and rocky marriage when I was a teen-ager, but I know I read them because I can still remember details and characters after all these years.
The first book of the trilogy, "My Friend Flicka" was never a favorite of mine, and the third book, "Green Grass of Wyoming" concentrates more on teen-age romance than horses. But "Thunderhead" is a perfect balance between the story of a boy's difficult coming-of-age and the wilder saga of his horse.
The boy, Ken grows up on a horse ranch in Wyoming during the Great Depression. His mare, Flicka gives birth during a thunderstorm to an ugly white foal that Ken's mother, Nell names 'Goblin.'
Nell has the gift of giving animals their true names, but Ken begs her to come up with something grander for Flicka's colt:
"There was an ache in Nell's heart. She looked at the foal--that stubbornness, the mulish head, that stupidity, trying to nurse on every horse in sight, not knowing his own mother; and its anger--it ran across the corral head down, kicking out with one hind leg--it seemed full of hatred."
Finally, she looks to the sky for inspiration and names the white foal, 'Thunderhead.'
Ken struggles to raise Goblin/Thunderhead as a race horse, but the white colt forges a stranger destiny for himself in the mountains of Wyoming's Neversummer Range, where his grandsire, the savage Albino rules a stolen band of mares.
I was amazed to learn that Mary O'Hara's Wyoming trilogy was a work of fiction. It just seemed so real to me. Now I know that parts of it are strongly autobiographical. In fact, this author published at least three non-fiction, autobiographical works: "Novel-in-the-Making" (1954); "Wyoming Summer" (1963) based on her diary of sixteen years; and an autobiography, published posthumously, "Flicka's Friend" (1982).
Don't listen to anyone who tries to label "Thunderhead" as a work of juvenile fiction. It is much more than that. The birth and death scenes are intensely lyrical, and there is a core of untamed wildness in all scenes away from the ranch and the racetrack. Here is the beauty and the cruelty and the vastness of the American West without the usual stereotypes.
GREAT BOOK.......2003-03-14
I loved THUNDERHEAD. It is powerful and moving, and Ken matured a lot! Thunderhead is such a wild, hideous colt in the beginning, but he turns into a handsome colt--and grows wilder. Ken fears he won't be a racer. Thunderhead is always escaping to dominate a herd of wild mares. He fights with the legendary Albino and becomes strong and fierce. The ending is..a surprise.
Thunderhead.......2003-02-28
This is a great book and I would recomend it for many people.
Thunderheads mother was Flika, Ken Mclaughtins first filly. Thunderhead was the first white horse born on the Goose Bar Ranch in Wyoming. Thunderhead jumps fences and climbes mountains. He finds a passage way to a valley that Ken later names Valley of the Eagles. This leads to an old albino stailion, Thunderhead gets a few nips and hoof marks before he is able to get out of the valley and return to the ranch. Thunderhead adventually goes back to the valley and kills the albino staillion. He adeopts the mares that the albino had once cared for. Thunderhead retutns home and is caught by Kens dad Captain Mclaughtin. Thunderhead is sceduled to be in a race because he is very fast and powerful. Thunderhead starts the race but looses his themper and bucks his rider off, the jumps a fence. The Goose Bar Ranch already has a stallion, Banner. Ken, knowing he can't keep his horse locks, Thunderhead in the Valley of the Eagles. Anyone who likes horses and is in middle school or above should read this book.
Great for any age.......2002-12-03
I loved reading these books as a pre-teen, and again as an
adult when I discovered they were written on a ranch next to
the one I lived on in southeast Wyoming. The author uses
real locations and real situations (the crater doesn't
exist except in her imagination, but almost everything else
is true to life), which some might think is a bit intense for
young readers, but I find that children are more than capable
of understanding and enjoying these tales. I must correct the
reviewer who spoke of Anasazi in the books- they never made it
that far north, and I don't remember any references to them
that Mary O'Hara made either. Cheyenne, Arapaho, and Crow
Nations were all represented in this area. Mary O'Hara does a
wonderful job of using her real life experiences to make a
series of books that allow us to share her pioneer life.
