              Book Description

The development of science and technology demands precise data concerning the fundamental thermodynamic and transport properties of ionic solutions. Many fields, such as corrosion, pollution, food technology, biochemical phenomena, rates of reactions, etc., which involve such solutions, have been moving towards a more scientific treatment. Accordingly, the relevant fundamental parameters need to be known over a wider scale.

Whereas some recent fields of science have information concentrated in a few specialist journals covering only a short span of time, the basic thermodynamic and transport properties of aqueous solutions are scattered among hundreds of different journals over a period of many decades. To aid the specialist in the search for one of these properties, the author has compiled comprehensive data from the literature on
              1. Density. 2. Viscosity. 3. Conductance. 4. Transport numbers. 5. Diffusion coefficients. 6. Activity coefficients (and osmotic coefficients)
of aqueous solutions of binary inorganic electrolytes, listed in alphabetical order according to the chemical formula.

A list of electrolytes by alphabetical order of name in English is given in appendix I. All properties of a single solute are grouped together, thus forming a chapter, divided in sections according to temperature, e.g. Section 0 has data of the above six properties measured at 0°C, below 0°C or up to 2.4°C. Section 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45 have data measured at the indicated t temperature or within the range t - 2.5°C

The present work is of immense value to those interested in readily assessing all the data of a single solute at a certain temperature, and appropriate indices easily supply the information of a certain property in every electrolyte.

                Book Description

This study provides a stimulating critique of contemporary evolutionary thought, analyzing the Modern Synthesis first developed by Theodosius Dobzhansky, Ernst Mayr, and George Gaylord Simpson. The author argues that although only genes and organisms are taken as historic "individuals" in
conventional theory, species, higher taxa, and ecological entities such as populations and communities should also be construed as individuals--an approach that yields the ecological and genealogical hierarchies that interact to produce evolution. This clearly stated, controversial work will
provoke much debate among evolutionary biologists, systematists, paleontologists, and ecologists, as well as a wide range of educated lay readers.

                    Book Description

In the last two decades extraordinary progress in the experimental handling of single quantum objects has spurred theoretical research into investigating the coupling between quantum systems and their environment. Decoherence, the gradual deterioration of entanglement due to dissipation and noise fed to the system by the environment, has emerged as a central concept. The present set of lectures is intended as a high-level, but self-contained, introduction into the fields of quantum noise and dissipation. In particular their influence on decoherence and applications pertaining to quantum information and quantum communication are studied, leading the nonspecialist researchers and the advanced students gradually to the forefront of research.

                      5 out of 5 stars Gabaldon's work revisited........2007-08-23

I almost enjoyed this book as much as the series books themselves. It brought back so many wonderful points I'd enjoyed and forgotten about, questions remaining to be answered, thoughts of other readers that enjoyed the series as much as I did. This is a great gift for anyone that's read (and looks forward to perhaps more) Gabaldon's Outlander series.

5 out of 5 stars Revealing Glimpse Into the Mind of a Writer.......2007-05-04

When author Diane Gabaldon published her first novel, "Outlander" in the early 1990s, she had no inkling of the phenomenon she would create. Her characters, Claire Beauchamp Randall Fraser and Jamie Fraser have appeared in a dozen different languages and millions of volumes. This delightful book is a glimpse into the creative process. Gabaldon reveals her inspiration for Jamie (a character on Dr. Who); she discusses her methods of research, devotes an entire chapter to correcting mistakes in various volumes and includes some fascinating exchanges with readers and critics. Breezy, light hearted and downright fun, the book is an absolute necessity to fans of Claire and Jamie. Th reader is treated to Gabaldon's theories about the purpose of writing and character development. She freely admits that she has no idea where a story will end up when she begins. The first book, "Outlander" was just an experiment to teach her how to write. Originally, Gabaldon planned to write a pure historical novel, but when her heroine, Claire Beauchamp stubbornly insisted on speaking twentieth century slang, Gabaldon had to create a way for Claire to appear in 18th century Scotland while sounding like a modern, independent woman. Thus, Gabaldon hit upon the time travel device. It is a unique pleasure to read the answers to the many questions that a reader can develop about a beloved series and characters.

4 out of 5 stars Looking for a Little Extra?..........2007-04-04

This book is all about the extra little things you missed, never got or wanted more of in Gabaldon's novel series Outlander. The introduction is informative, enjoyable, page-turning and rather quirky in its explanation of Outlander's birth and much of the book is the same in its behind-the-creation of favorite characters; although she can go overboard with side characters that she attempts to highlight when she didn't do so in the series itself and the horoscopes of Jamie and Claire are clearly for fun alone since they only add to what any Outlander fan already knows about them. The best parts of The Companion are the language translations and pronunciations (Gaelic anyone?) of Gabaldon's bi-lingual characters' diction and the excerpts chapters that reveal future books for the Outlander series--You have to read Surgeon's Steel! The anticipation of where she's going with that little snip-it is killing me!

Defintely a must read, but not necessarily a must own since The Companion was written before her latest book: A Breath of Snow and Ashes was released, so theres nothing in it about that book and her website hints at two more books to complete the series which will leave The Companion throughly out of date for any of us who are waiting for something new.

5 out of 5 stars THE REMARKABLE VOYAGE CONTINUES..........2006-04-24

The third in a series of exceptionally well written time travel, adventure/romance books by the author, it tells a gripping and highly entertaining tale. There are six such novels published to date in this series. I urge the interested reader to start at the beginning and read each and every one. Do not be daunted by the length. Trust me when I say that you will wish that they were longer, so riveting a story does the author unfold. A masterful storyteller, the author employs the superlative use of historical events and period detail to weave an engaging three dimensional tapestry of timeless love and adventure. While the core of the story is about a love that transcends time, it is, however, much more than that. It is an adventure story that grips the reader from beginning to end and is positively addictive!

The love that spans time is that which twentieth century Englishwoman, Claire Randall, has for eighteenth century Scottish highlands warrior, James Fraser. Those readers who have read the first book in the series, "Outlander", know that in 1945, Claire, a combat nurse during World War II, is reunited with her husband, Frank, after the war. While on a second honeymoon in Scotland, she visits a strange, flat topped hill, where a forbidding stone circle draws her. Touching one of the stones, she is hurled through a vortex in time and finds herself in eighteenth century Scotland, where she meets a brave and brawny, red headed Scot, James Fraser, with whom she falls head over heels in love. Finding herself thrust into the midst of clan warfare and intrigue, she and her beloved 'Jamie' have enough adventures to last a lifetime.

The second book, "Dragonfly in Amber", is a continuation of that story, told from the perspective of the twentieth century where Claire, now a doctor, has lived for the past twenty years. Upon the death of her twentieth century husband, Frank, Claire returns to Scotland with her grown, red headed daughter, Brianna. There, she discloses to Brianna the events of her secret past, as well as the truth of whom Brianna's biological father truly is and of the love that Claire bore him.

While in Scotland, however, Claire discovers something that will forever change her future, as well as her past. You see, for the past twenty years, Claire has mistakenly believed that her beloved 'Jamie' died in the historic battle of Culloden. It was there that the Scottish highlanders bravely fought the English in a misguided attempt to restore Charles Stuart, their bonnie Prince Charlie, to the throne of England, only to be decimated on the battlefield. Those few who survived were branded as Jacobite traitors and imprisoned, and their families disenfranchised. It is this very event that Claire and 'Jamie' had conspired to change, only to fail.

Their story transports the reader from the turmoil of the Scottish highlands to the intrigue of the French Court and regales the reader with the adventures of the two lovers, as they conspire to change the very course of history. It was this valiant attempt that ultimately brought Claire and 'Jamie' to the crossroad that would compel them to part and have Brianna become a denizen of the twentieth century.

In "Voyager", Claire, now realizing that the love of her life and soulmate survived the battle of Culloden, makes the decision to go back in time and find James Fraser, as for the past twenty years her love for him has remained constant. Leaving her daughter, Brianna, she once more hurls herself into the vortex of time to eighteenth century Scotland to begin her search for James Fraser, in hope of being reunited with her 'Jamie'.

This book tells the story of what happened to Claire Randall and James Fraser in those intervening twenty years. It tells of their ultimate reunion and rediscovery. With historical events as a backdrop and an unforgettable cast of characters, it regales the reader with their new adventures, as Claire returns to a still divided, turmoil ridden Scotland. Reunited with James Fraser, none the worse for wear, they seek to make a life for themselves. As their love comes full circle, they take to the high seas, and their adventures continue. This compelling time travel saga is sure to captivate the reader.

                      5 out of 5 stars A great Outlander "encyclopedia".......2003-07-06

I was thrilled to get mine in the mail after finishing the first five Outlander books! It's fun to get the behind-the-scenes tour of the books and characters. Can't wait for the next few books to be published!

5 out of 5 stars Most believable historical fiction - bar none.......2003-05-19

I stumbled across this book in line at the grocery store and quickly became addicted to the entire Outlander series. I've bought them as gifts for family and friends innumerable times. The attention to detail in all of Ms. Gabaldon's books is eerie - in short it makes you wonder if time travel is indeed possible. Calling these books romance novels is unfair because there is so much more to them than your standard bodice ripper. The characters are complex and believable and the dialogue is intelligent and often humorous. At roughly a 1,000 pages per book it's certainly not light reading for the beach but they're so engrossing you'll likely not notice whether the sun is out or not...

                      5 out of 5 stars Amazing Book.......2002-08-05

The title of the book says it all! Anyone who enjoys Diana Gabaldon's work, should definetly buy this book. It has some really interesting insights, such as a horoscope for both Jamie and Claire. Well worth the money spent!!!!!
