Heavy on getting you the answer and light on the specifics of the theory behind getting you there, Practical Astronomy with your Calculator does exactly what the author purports -- gives you a simple set of equations that will tell you the wheres and whens of astronomical phenomena.

Awesome introduction to Astronomy.......2004-05-31

I read this book way back in 1989 in India at IIT library,
and implemented it in Turbo pascal on 8086/DOS.

It provides explanations of coordinate systems, time, date,
and calculations. Very well written, this is what Astronomy
was about, if you have read NEWTON's principia, or wondered
what Gauss did.

Check out Xephem (Free astronomy program for linux/X with source
code in C), Alw.exe (Astronomy lab almanac generator/DOS), if you want instant answers.

I also use Redshift 4, and starry nights on my pc to get
the star maps.

Excellent Value at $11.80.......2003-11-26

Amateur astronomers will be able to solve a multitude of practical problems with this book. If you are short on funds and have time to explore, this is the book for you. It is well organized and reasonably complete.

The extremely concise - bordering on laconic - style poses the danger that some readers may become discouraged and will give up. The low price makes it a tempting entry-level book, but the terse explanations means you'll have to do a lot of digging, which is a cookbook recipe to discourage newcomers to a field.

I have two critiques of this otherwise excellent work.

1.) The formulae presented in this book are a little too "cookbook" in for my tastes.

2.) Further they are only weakly validated, so it is difficult to know how accurate the results are.

The cookbook nature provides little insight into the physical problem being solved. It did motivate me to buy and study Smart's "Spherical Astronomy". If you want more than superficial answers, you'll need to dig deeper.

Validation is rarely a problem for amateurs. Most people who buy this book will program the recipes on their home computers. (Most are readily amenable to treatment in spreadsheets.) So far, no problem. But how do you know whether or not your calculation of the position of Mars 60,000 ago is any good?

I think that Meeus and Montenbruck largely avoid these problems, but at a much higher selling price.

Very good book.......2002-10-04

This is a very good book. You have short explanation and practical application in calculating celestial coordinate transformation,calendar transformation, planets position,eclipse etc. and even precession phenomena. For this latter, elementary knowledge of matrix calculation would be helpful: in any case without going through matrix theory the practicals rules in how to handle them are given.
I strongly advise this book to anybody interested in practical and easy calculation (with high accuracy) of the most important astronomical phenomena.

Physics and Materials Science of High Temperature Superconductors, II represents the results of a fruitful dialogue between physicists and materials scientists which took place under the auspices of a NATO Advanced Study Institute in Porto Carras, Greece, between 18 and 31 August, 1991. It builds on and carries forward the success of NATO ASI 181 published in 1990.
The theoretical side of the discussions reveal the basic premise of the phenomenological and Ginzburg-Landau theories of superconductivity, the implications of short coherence length, long penetration depth, the melting of flux lattices, and other matters, while the materials science includes discussions of microstructures, local inhomogeneities, deviations from ideal chemistry, the effects of systematic errors in materials preparation, the definition of imperfections, and the utilization of common materials analysis techniques.
The reader will be made aware of the potential significance of Angstrom scale structural and chemical details, and the need to consider basic theoretical concepts when designing procedures to process viable, solid conductors, specifically the effects of oxygen stoichiometry and deviations from it, as well as the microstructural demands on pinning in the light of very short coherence lengths.

The object of this book is the quantum mechanism that allows the macroscopic quantum coherence of a superconducting condensate to resist to the attacks of high temperature. Solution to this fundamental problem of modern physics is needed for the design of room temperature superconductors, for controlling the decoherence effects in the quantum computers and for the understanding of a possible role of quantum coherence in living matter that is debated today in quantum biophysics. The recent experimental results on nanoscale phase separation and the two component scenario in high T _c in doped cuprate and the lower symmetry in the superconducting elements at high pressure area presented. The compelling evidence for multiband superconductivity in MgB ₂ that provides the simplest system for testing the high T _c theories, and plays the same role as atomic hydrogen for the development of the quantum mechanics in the twenties, is one of the main points of the book. The multiband superconductivity enhances the critical temperature from the low T _c range T _c < 19K, to the high temperature range, T _c = 40K. The heterogeneous structure, the superlattice of superconducting layers, determines the disparity and different spatial location of the Bloch wave functions of electrons at the Fermi level that provides in superconductivity the clean limit. The chemical potential can be tuned by atomic substitutions without increasing inelastic single electron interband scattering. The Feshbach shape resonance in the exchange-like off-diagonal interband pairing term, as predicted since 1993, appears to be the mechanism for evading temperature decoherence effects and enhancing the critical temperature.

Doesn't fit.......2007-05-13

This book, about a third the size of the others in the series, appears to be something left over or deleted from about the second volume. "A Common Life" is way out of sequence and just isn't very interesting. It deals solely with the marriage of Father Tim and has little to do with Mitford or the other characters. I found the novel (it is scarcely that) a real disappointment, compared with the first four books of the series. If the author felt that the information therein was significant, why was it not included at the appropriate place in time? The question is never answered.

This mundane novel is something that would appeal to my grandmother..simple, quaint, well written. It is a geat book for a young girl, but for an adult reader it lacks the ability to hold one's interest. Perfectly harmless, but it makes for a dull read--a filler type story for when you simply want to pass the time...

Mitford is the kind of place that we would all love to live.... a slpeey little town in the mountains where you know your neighbors. I recommend buying this book... and curling up in your favorite chair with a warm blanket and cup of hot chocolate! Turn the phones off and slip away... I guarentee that you won't want to come back!
