5 out of 5 stars Best book to understand QuickBooks.......2001-05-16

This book is easy to understand and gives you many shortcust not easily explained in the manual that coems with QuickBooks. Too many business owners don't understand accounting enough and this helps. But as a book on QuickBooks, I highly recommend it as I've bought many of thsoe books.

3 out of 5 stars Could be better.......2000-07-09

I have been using this book for a few months now. It is good BUT when I have a question, I often can't find the answer. The little quirks that happen in a business (getting refunds from supplies) etc, aren't answered. All in all, it's good to set up with.

Book Description

Your one-instructional-design-fits-all solution!

Most training companies develop their training programs in many different technological delivery media, including computer-based, web-based, and distance learning technologies. This unique book demonstrates that the same instructional design process can be used for all media. Using just one process reduces cycle time for course development-and also reduces costs.

Multimedia-Based Instructional Design will provide you with:

  • A process that applies across-the-board to technology-based training of all kinds
  • A hands-on guide to a method of design that is accessible to professionals at all levels of technical expertise
  • A CD-ROM that includes job aids, tools, and worksheets that you can customize for your own use

No more going back to the drawing board every time a new medium is introduced. Once you have this design process in place, you'll have the freedom to choose the delivery method that works best for you!

5 out of 5 stars Exactly What We Needed for a Large, Global Corporation.......2006-03-11

As a large, global corporation, we have over 15 learning development factories scattered around the world, including India and China. Lee and Owens comprehensive textbook provided just the right amount of information we needed to bring our large, diverse learning development population to a common level of understanding. If one could have only one instructional design textbook, I highly recommend this one. The organization is suberb and the forms contained on the CD are perfect for corporate use. Great book! Every ID should have this book on his or her bookshelf.

5 out of 5 stars An indispensable roadmap.......2004-07-04

Multimedia-Based Instructional Design is a roadmap, a AAA TripTik?, to guide you on the complex journey from assessing the need for media-based instruction to the final evaluation and analysis of your results.

This book provides the plan and the tools to monitor the plan. It tells you what you need to do and strategies you may want to try. But it does not teach you step by step how to perform the work needed along the way. Multimedia development requires a multi-talented team, spanning a variety of disciplines-way beyond the scope of this book. You, as the project manager, are responsible for putting the plan into action, obtaining the necessary talent, supervising the production, and evaluating the results.

The chapters are short, simply written, and easily digested. The layout is easy to read, with large text and generous line spacing. The accompanying CD-ROM contains Microsoft Word versions of all the forms, checklists, and instructions mentioned in the text-plus Web-based tools to help you formulate objectives and another to help you choose the type of media appropriate for your project.

If you or your training department is planning your first foray beyond the instructor-led live classroom, Multimedia-Based Instructional Design will help you prepare a cogent plan, point out the potential pitfalls, and provide insight based on over 40 years of the authors' combined experience.

    5 out of 5 stars Terrific guide.......2004-05-14

This is an easy to read guide that is extremely helpful. I disagree that this was written by acedemics with no practical experience- there is loads of practical up to date information. I would strongly reccomend the book to anyone needing a strong grasp on the subject and practical examples.

    1 out of 5 stars Doesn't seem contemporary.......2002-12-17

Overly generous interline spacing has made a large book out of what is a effectively a small book. Much of the material in the book struck me as on the edge of redundant and out of touch with emerging developments. Many of the references are very dated (seventies and eighties material) and some are simply obscure. The book just isn't convincingly up to date.

The emphasis on form filling will appeal to all those types who like to run software projects by form filling. There is no creative thrust to this book and the complimentary technology angles are weak. The CD contained nothing that I hadn't been aware of in other modes or hadn't created with MS Office components. It is largely an irrelevancy.

For corporate types who want to roll out loads of flannel about elearning project management, this book may be a gem. For developers however, I would recommend Allessi and Trollip as a much superior text. Personally speaking, this book was not a good value purchase by me.

2 out of 5 stars Long on Theory, Short on How-To.......2002-07-27

This book appears to have been written by academics. It contains a great planning strategies but very little in the way of practical information about how to actually design multimedia instructional materials. The accompanying CD is weak, mostly text and a bunch of supplemental forms and planing document templates. It isn't worth the money if your looking for a "nuts and bolts" guide to design.

    Book Description

Advanced Web-Based Training Strategies fills the gap in the literature available on this topic by offering a volume that includes meaningful, applicable, and proven strategies that can take the experienced instructional designer to the next level of web-based training. Written by Margaret Driscoll and Saul Carliner -- internationally acclaimed experts on e-learning and information design- -- Advanced Web-Based Training Strategies provides instructional designers, e-learning developers, technical communicators, students, and others with strategies for addressing common challenges that arise when designing e-learning. Balancing educational theory with the practical realities of implementation, Driscoll and Carliner outline the benefits and limitations of each strategy, discuss the issues surrounding the implementation of these strategies, and illustrate each strategy with short scenarios drawn from real-world online learning programs representing a wide variety of fields including technology, financial services, health care, and government.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars try different pedagogies.......2005-08-06

How to teach on the web? Driscoll advances several pedagogies that have been implemented in the real world. These may also be effective online. She encourages you to experiment. You should understand that there may be no answer best suited for all cases. So an empirical approach might help.

Interestingly, too, she discusses m-training or m-learning, where m stands for mobile. Cell phones. Here, some scepticism might be in order. Given the limited size of the screen and memory, and the rudimentary keypad. Along these lines, there have been startups that attempted to make software to control databases remotely from a cellphone, for example. These have met little success. The user interface is too constrained for all but the most limited interactions.

    Book Description

Instructional Design for Web-based Training blends instructional design and development tasks with web design issues to outline a methodology for creating effective web-based training (WBT).

This book is based on the perspective that effective WBT does not derive solely from the use of Internet technology, but must be founded on proven instructional design techniques as well. Each chapter addresses key implications such interplay can have for a WBT project team, target learners, training goals, and technical possibilities from planning through implementation.

This book is intended as a detailed how-to primer that integrates fundamental principles with the nuts and bolts of WBT development. It addresses salient issues for instructional designers seeking a reliable guide to creating effective web courses, but who are not sure where to begin or how to proceed. It answers practical questions such as:

When is WBT a viable option?
How can I apply my current instructional design skills to optimal advantage when designing for this new delivery system?
What new skills should I develop?
Who do I need on my team?
How can I meet student needs through this somewhat impersonal delivery system?
What technology is needed to actually deliver the training?

The companion CD-ROM provides a centralized collection of all project planning and evaluation resources included at the end of each chapter. It also contains selected WBT design and development guidelines that are interspersed throughout the book.

4 out of 5 stars Good Instructional Design Applies to Any Media.......2002-06-27

This book is a detailed primer for anyone who needs to know what is involved in designing and developing instructionally sound Web-based training. The authors weave the requirements of Web design and instructional design into a clearly presented process. This design methodology is grounded in good instructional practice and it demonstrates a wealth of practical experience with design and development projects. If you want to know practical things, like the difference between writing for text and writing for a Web-based training product, or how to include usability and summative evaluation in your testing plan, this is a good source of information.

This book comes with a CD containing electronic versions of the large number of design and development forms presented in the book. Instructional Design for Web-based Training is a must-read for anyone contemplating designing custom Web-based instruction. The most compelling reason for reading the book is that the authors realize that the basics of good design are no different whether intended for any instruction-delivery medium or for the Web. While means of delivering instruction are constantly changing, what makes for sound instruction remains basically unchanged. By paying close attention and following the processes presented in this book, you can successfully initiate and execute your own eLearning project.

                          Book Description

One of the main tenets of evolutionary biology is that organisms behave so as to maximize the number of their genes that will be passed on to future generations. Parents often produce more offspring than they can rear in case special opportunities or calamities occur. This frequently leads to deprivations and even death of some offspring. This book is about the evolutionary diversity, importance, and consequences of such squeezes. The authors, experts in their field, review the theory, field experiments, and natural history of sibling rivalry across a broad sweep of organisms, in a clear and accessible style that should appeal to both academics and natural historians.

5 out of 5 stars An absolutely excellent and important book.......2003-05-02

This book is the "bible" for evolutionary biologists interested in sibling rivalry, and a valuable resource for those interested in parent-offspring conflict. The writing style is engaging and very entertaining for a scientific book, although the math may be difficult for some. A definite must-read for anyone in this area, or for those who are generally interested in Hamiltonian fitness and its impacts.

                          Book Description

Sibling rivalry and intergenerational conflict are not limited to human beings. Among seals and piglets, storks and burying beetles, in bird nests and beehives, from apples to humans, family conflicts can be deadly serious, determining who will survive and who will perish. When offspring compete for scarce resources, sibling rivalry kicks in automatically. Parents sometime play favorites or even kill their young. In More Than Kin and Less Than Kind, Douglas Mock tells us what scientists have discovered about this disturbing side of family dynamics in the natural world.

Natural selection operates primarily for the benefit of individuals (and their genes). Thus a family member may profit directly, by producing its own offspring, or indirectly, by helping close kin to reproduce. Much of the biology of family behavior rests on a simple mathematical relationship called Hamilton's rule, which links the benefits and costs of seemingly altruistic or selfish behavior to the degree of relatedness between individuals.

Blending natural history and theoretical biology, Mock shows how Hamilton's rule illuminates the study of family strife by throwing a spotlight on the two powerful forces--cooperation and competition--that shape all interaction in the family arena. In More Than Kin and Less Than Kind, he offers a rare perspective on the family as testing ground for the evolutionary limits of selfishness. When budgets are tight, close kin are often deadly rivals.

5 out of 5 stars And you thought YOUR family was psychotic! .......2007-01-24

Most of us have at least one or the other horror story to tell about our family: like when your older brother tried to suffocate you while you peacefully and helplessly lay in your crib; or when your mother unjustly punished you for the mess your sister had made in the bedroom; or that time when you almost broke your youngest brother's arm and felt good about it. And, of course, you might remember having wished at least once or twice that you had been an only child or that you had actually been adopted and came originally from much nicer and richer parents. All these instances run counter to the idea that families should be protective, loving nests where we learn the values of cooperation and altruism. Honour your parents, be nice to your siblings, and for God's sake stop whining just because your sister got more chocolate mousse than you for dessert!

Douglas Mock proposes a different approach to the issue of family conflict. His main argument being: what might seem unfair, cruel, even dangerous in a relationship between parents and children or between siblings does not imply that a particular family is dysfunctional. Quite the opposite, this may just indicate how successful -- and therefore functional -- the family is. In order to understand this, our notions of individual and family relationships need a slight rearrangement: we should regard everything from a genetic point of view. The question then being: are certain less appealing attitudes and actions advantageous for the replication of genes in the long run?

Interestingly, what it all comes down to is economics -- and lots of luck. After all, selfish genes are annoyingly calculating instances, only concerned with getting spread as much and as cheaply as possible. All organisms, as vehicles for genes, have therefore been selected throughout the generations to be quite shrewd and self-absorbed reproducers. Even if it means sacrificing an offspring or a sibling.
Throughout the book Mock shows how far this calculating principle can actually go. It involves everything from parents producing more offspring than they can actually feed, mothers culling their young without a flicker of regret, and big bullying siblings pecking or starving their younger weaker siblings to death while the parents watch indifferent (and yawn!). All this is accompanied by photos representing such actions.
The good news being: if an organism is born in a favourable territory and resourceful year (or if its older, nasty sibling(s) happen to die early), it might just survive the hectic nesting period and go on to produce its own bunch of kids. A success story, after all -- one to which billions of individual organisms currently on the planet can attest to. We've made it! The main winners, of course, are the genes, who can go on playing their replication game.

For all its worth, Mock uses a delightfully uncompromising method: he hardly makes any mention of humans at all. The book provides lots of examples of conflict in bird, insect, fish and even fruit families. Not surprisingly, wherever he looks he finds similar behavioural traits. (And every now and then, with charming wit, the author does remind us that we shouldn't think humans are all that different -- as in the following sentence: "From lowly dung beetles to the courts of human royalty, even the simplest families are anything but simple.")

Needless to say, the book might seem a bit discouraging. However, it is in fact not only very entertaining, but also -- for those of us who, like Petrarch, believe that enlightenment is the only true consolation in this world -- an eye opener. Like every good sociobiology book, it shows that, in the words of the author, behavioural traits are above all "subject to the unsentimental shaping powers of natural selection." And for better or for worse, this implies lots of conflict and losses.
All in all, More Than Kin is a valuable contribution to a relatively innovative but already somewhat widespread approach to life on this planet, teaching us to look beyond morality (and moral panics) and concentrate on ultimate (evolutionary) reasons behind many a disturbing factor. The answers might not always be cheery but they certainly makes sense. Which is, in the end, all that any good philosophy book can provide.

2 out of 5 stars More than fiction but less than science.......2005-02-28

In this popular work on the evolution of siblicide, Mock has posied that bird ususally hatch more than the optimal nuber of offpsrings, as insurance policy in case of an unexpected boom in resource availability that can sustain an abnormallly large brood.

However, Mock also believes that the parents deliberately handicapped the non-core, marginal offspring, which is born smaller than its core siblings, which tend to kill it irrespective of the food availablity. Now it boggles the mind as to WHY would the parents spent all the resources in an egg that it, in most case, believes will be finished off (if the offspring is destined to be executed, why invest in it?), especially in birds with long life histories, and WHY the core offsprings do not eat the marginal one if all thet care about is monopolize the food and take out the competition?

Mock has not cared to research on the fact that may be the evolutionary mechanisms do not work clock-like and that the parents may sometimes give birth to a large brood even in times of deprivation, and that the marginal offspring may be culled due to the risks pathogens/infections (that would explain why the carcass is not eaten!) posed to other offsprings.

All in all, the book is nice story telling, but unfortunately it's not science.

                          5 out of 5 stars Academically impressive.......2004-12-08

Sibling rivalry and conflicts between relatives aren't limited to human beings, as is common perceived: animals and all creatures often experience deadly family conflicts when offspring compete for resources. Douglas Mock is Professor in the Department of Zoology at the University of Oklahoma: his studies in More Than Kin And Less Than Kind: The Evolution Of Family Conflict blend natural history and theoretical biology with social insights to draw some important conclusions on the nature of family strife as it is determined by cooperative and competitive patterns. Academically impressive, More Than Kin And Less Than Kind is a recommended addition to university library Sociology and Social Psychology collections.
