Know your rights!, and use them........2005-12-27

Too many people are completely ignorant of their rights in general. Employment law is no different. This book is not about how to be a good employee and not get fired, it's not about office politics, it's not there to hold your hand through that tough time. It is a book about knowing and exercising your legal rights as an employee. Learn how to protect yourself at work before you even get the job. I highly reccomend this book.

GOT RIPPED!.......2005-06-25

The book was a great read for employment law; but when you think you have a case based on what you read in this book and get to the office and are charged $250 for consultation (1/2 hour)as he takes calls while meeting you, you start to feel a bit ripped off. All the info in the book that I thought made a case meant absolutely nothing when I went to meet this lawyer at his office. Before you consult, buy and read a couple of other books and get as much free consul as you can if at all possible...

A helpful book at the right time for my career..........2004-10-15

As a successful college football coordinator, I realize that my job is always under public scrutiny. Regardless of the fact that I, and the team, am highly successful and that we make our yearly trip to the Holiday Bowl, there is always the outside chance that people are not satisfied with my performance. With my ability to scheme. With my ability to adjust during a game. With my ability to develop talent. With my ability to utilize talent. But I digress.

The previous review noted that the book was only good if you are planning to sue. I don't see this as a negative. In fact, the threat of a lawsuit is certainly a reasonable way to maintain one's position. Also, I've discovered that it's very important to have photographs of one's superior in, shall we say, a "compromising position". I got that idea from the movie "The Firm", and it's allowed me to maintain a career track that is highly enviable.

I appreciate the advice in this book in response to getting fired, in particular the section dealing with "how to protect your pension". Why, just last year I gave my good friend Bull some advice on this very subject which turned out to be a huge help for him. He's now sitting out on his bass boat, fishing while collecting an amazing pension.

The part of this book that I disagree with is entitled "the right way to resign your position". There is no right way and no right time to do this. First, make them fire you. Screw them if they can't see your brilliance. Second, make sure you have those compromising photographs! These ensure that your boss complements you publicly, like "Greg is doing the best job in the country".

In all, this book was very helpful to me, and I plan to use many of these strategies to ensure proper compensation if I am fired. Oh, and I'll publish those pictures too. Which should serve as a reminder - never fall asleep in a strip club in Mexico if your friend has a camera! Ah ha ha ha ha ha!

During a restructuring phase at my company, i had the heavy feeling of not knowing if I was going to be next on the ax list. I stumbled across this book at a bookstore, not really looking for it. Reading the title, I said to myself that this is what I need right now. Very good solid stable advice from a seasoned pro in this field. Knowledge is power and this book gives you an extra kick of power.

Contrary to the last post I thought every page contained quite humorous anecdotes. The book had me laughing every page all the way to the end. Sure, he is sarcastic and may have expected too much, but he gives a lot of good advice. A must read for anyone that is unsure of the online dating world and could use some tips on what to do.

Don't Waste Your Time!!!!.......2004-10-31

This guy is so judgmental and idiotic that literally every page had me steaming. Cosmo Fox has an aversion to anyone qualifying as "overweight" and, as many women and men have found using the internet as a dating source, it enables one to get to know another person before getting to know what they look like. I understand that it's frustrating when someone is deceptive about their appearance before meeting, but the 'writer' (I use the term loosely--he mentions having had the book proofread but if I were to have a go at the final copy every page would be covered in red editing marks!! Horrible!!) spends approximately half the book insulting his dates (who would presumably read the book) for being fat--and even one for being a burn victim! He considers himself very witty and interesting, and he just isn't. It's a real shame that one of the few anecdotal books about online dating out there has to be written by this jerk. Please, please, someone with some real talent and sensitivity, give us something of quality to read!

My dear sister Heather gave me this book for my birthday. I am an avid internet dater, so this was the perfect gift for me. I guess the best word to summarize Cosmo Fox's book would be: CAPTIVATING. I couldn't put the book down! The next day, I dropped the book off to one of my friends that has been having hazardous dates. I would completely recommend purchasing this book and give it a FULL FIVE STARS! Know someone who chats and dates online? "Online Dating: The Early Years" should be their next birthday gift! North's comprehensive study of Neolithic structures and their purpose is an intense read. Except for frequent returns to earlier information, this book is not a "page-turner." It is, however, a wealth of challenging ideas on how our Neolithic ancestors lived. While North avoids suggesting that Neolithic Europe was unified in religious thinking, he points out areas of commonality. Some form of ancestor worship, he contends, led to sophisticated insight of the heavens across Europe. Over the centuries this knowledge went from star sightings to the recording of positions of the sun and moon at significant times. The evidence for this thesis lies in the burial sites, banks and ditches, wooden and stone monuments dating back nearly seven thousand years.

With firm conviction, illustrated by numerous graphic images, North demonstrates how early burial sites acted to mark stellar risings. Neolithic burials took place in a variety of sites: gallery graves, passage graves and dolmens, among others. The prevailing final step was the practice of covering the site with a mound of stones and earth. This could result in long barrows, mounds or other structures, but the one thing they had in common was to elevate the top above the surrounding horizon. Using the surrounding ditch remaining from relocating the soil and rock, observers could note certain stars appearing over an "artificial horizon." North postulates a possible shift in focus from ancestors and stars to gods or spirits associated with the sun and moon. This "advance" in thinking resulted in stone monuments like Stonehenge in Britain and sites in Western Europe.

In tracing the growth of religious thinking and its manifestations in Neolithic Europe, North sees consistency without unity. What he does stress is the advanced thinking that must have been taking place during passing years. Wood and stone circles were positioned with uncanny accuracy to perform their tasks. He provides reconstruction drawings of many of the sites to display the limited fields of view they allowed. Peering along the post alignments, only a brief glimpse of rising or setting sun was available to the observer. Lintels, whether wood or stone, were designed to cut down on glare during sunrise or sunset observations. The graphics illustrating these points require careful study, but are rewarding for that.

Some of his contentions seem implausible. He uniformly places observers of stellar risings in ditches. If these were religious leaders, this would seem a diminution of priestly status not seen elsewhere. North has gone to considerable effort to demonstrate just how complex the sites are and what that says about the motivation and abilities of Neolithic peoples. How much of this effort is his, and how much derived from others is difficult to assess. There are frequent references to various authors in the text, but no direct citations. His "Bibliography" is by chapters and too vague to pursue sources without excessive toil. The appendices, on carbon dating, astronomical issues and geographical positioning are helpful, particularly if you have the maths. This was our book club selection this month and it was a great choice. As a history buff and lover of historical fiction, I was surprised how little I knew about Hungary, Shanghai, and the interwar time period. The author has woven a terrific story with very real characters around true events in history. I'm passing this book on to my husband as I'm sure he'll love it.

Fast-Paced "Page Turner" First Novel Set in early 20th Century.......2006-06-17

Wonderfully written first historical novel opens in rural Hungary during the pre-math to World War I and continues through post-WWII. Leo Hoffman, the black-sheep son in an impoverished peasant Jewish family, is discovered to be a very gifted boy by a benevolent traveling schoolmaster. By luck and tenaciousness, Leo is set free from his peasant roots and blossoms under the tutelage of an aristocratic Jewish family in Budapest who adopt him. Leo's academic gift for rapid mastering of spoken languages, along with his handsomeness and moral certitude, jettisons him easily into polite Viennese society. But the sudden assasination of Arch-Duke Ferdinand plunges Hungary into war; and Leo's career suffers serious setback as he is conscripted into the military. By the end of WWI, Budapest is destroyed, and so is his gracious life of nobility before war. In scrapping together a new career and in allegiance to native Hungary, he's drawn into a commercial venture whereby Leo becomes a pawn leaving him in immediate abject danger. To escape Paris, he must adopt a stolen identity; and to his horror, the criminal intrigue is spiraling out of control, just as he meets and falls in love with the beautiful Martha Levy. As much as life itself, he yearns for her for his future wife. Jews were in increasingly great danger everywhere in Europe between the wars; and for a Jew with secrets, the times were especially sinister. Without proper passport and credentials, there's only one port city where no questions are asked, and that's where Leo heads. How he convinces his dream-girl to follow him across three continents to build a life together is a remarkable tale. Author Malcolm has researched extensively in this first novel portraying five decades of period manners in rich detail, in the midst of class strife, lawlessness, and prejudice. The one disappointment is when the novel ends half-way through the story with "To Be Continued" on the last page. Publisher Longstreet Press deserves to be chastized roundly for dividing the story into two books; and I doubt it was done for the sake of art. I'll be back for the second half, however, because it's a great story, so rich and lush -- it may be destined for the big screen, so keep tuned.
