Book Description
Quality management. Process mapping. Speed to production. In the past 50 years, a rigorous, measurement-based methodology called Six Sigma has brought production management to previously unimaginable levels of success and sophistication. Top corporations such as Motorola and GE have built their reputations, products, and revenues using this approach. Indeed, Six Sigma has found widespread application in every significant industry and business—except marketing and sales.
In Sales and Marketing the Six Sigma Way, sales and quality guru Michael Webb shows how to blend marketing and sales efforts with the cutting-edge methods of Six Sigma to boost their bottom lines. With Webb’s book as a guide, readers learn to engineer rapid routes to customer value, accurately predict future revenue, and ensure return on investment for their projects.
In Sales and Marketing the Six Sigma Way, you will:
* Find out why ""the usual fixes"" for sales problems don't work
* Meet executives who have used Six Sigma to imrpove marketing and sales results
* See the pitfalls that await the unwary when applying process improvement in sales
* Learn how to introduce Six Sigma to sales and marketing professionals
* Discover through examples and cases how to manage sales as a process
Webb walks readers through several Six Sigma sales and marketing projects from start to finish, highlighting the tools, decisions, and results that made them successful. He shows the practical methods managers use to translate process improvement principles to the human world of selling and marketing.
With his dual background in sales and marketing management and in quality improvement, Webb speaks clearly to readers in both disciplines. This makes Sales and Marketing the Six Sigma Way the indispensible guide for sales and marketing professionals who want to excel in today's business environment, and for quality improvement experts who want to help them.

A Must Read for CEOs Tired of Same Old Sales Excuses.......2007-08-17
This book tackles the central marketing problem of our time ....too many suspects, and an ever dwindling number of qualified prospects. Mr. Webb untangles this problem and then shows you how to design a selling system to be an ever improving "machine". A fun read with lots of how-to and examples.
It's a PE Book.......2007-07-24

Merging Six Sigma with Sales & Marketing.......2007-07-20
Michael Webb has done a fantastic job with merging the six sigma methodology with the sales & marketing disciplines. This book takes the six sigma practice, that has long been used in the manufacturing circles, and applies it to the sales function in a way that is both concise and understandable. Six sigma promises to change the future of sales just as it has manufacturing, and this book is the road map for that journey. I would not only highly recommend this book to anyone in the sales and/or marketing arena, but consider it a must read.
Sales & Marketing the Six Sigma Way.......2007-04-03
I found this book invaluable. As a brand marketing consultant I face a barrage of misguided engineers and production minded individual who deam marketing as puffery. This book provided me a greater insight in turning these folks into marketing partners. Engineers and marketing consultants have more in common than they know - Sales & Marketing the Six Signa Way identifies how these two can and should come closer together to seek and implement the voice of the customer in establishing and marketing superior customer value.
A Great Explanation of the Sales Process.......2007-03-22
This is the first book I've read that truly and fully explains how to analyze the selling (and marketing) process and improve it. Six Sigma is not easy to understand to those who have never studied it, but the Author explains it very clearly and thoroughly. I've read a lot of sales and marketing books and this is the first one I have come across that acknowledges that selling today is very different than it used to be. Many of the existing sales books are completely out of date and were written for a different era. This book is a fresh new look at the sales process overall and where the obstacles may be.

From the author: AIRCO is a manufacturer of industrial air conditioner units whose management is concerned that their current traditional cost accounting (TCA) system is not accurately representing their product cost behavior. Under certain operating conditions, an activity based costing (ABC) system can provide relevant and accurate indirect cost information that assists in making customer, product, and process improvement decisions. An ABC system was successfully developed for AIRCO that indicated that their products do not consume overhead costs on a volume basis as represented by their current TCA system. Valuable product and process information were obtained. This case study details the development process that was used and the results that were obtained during the ABC analysis.

Description:
According to surveys, manufacturing industries adopt standard costing for cost control. Traditionally, many accountants believed the most effective standards were those set by industrial engineers with the participation of operating managers to be evaluated. However, some accountants argue that such standards set by the Engineering Approach cannot verify if the standards are too loose or too rigid and fail to provide sufficient incentives for employees to improve beyond the standards. Limitations of the Engineering Approach arise from an ever-changing industrial environment. Under fluctuating circumstances, human deduction and thinking processes utilize non-binary logic and therefore contain fuzzy factors. With fuzzy factors excluded from the Engineering Approach, its ability to reflect problems is doubtful. This paper combines the fuzzy Delphi method with industrial standard costing so as to develop a convergent gray zone test (CGZT). The CGZT not only includes fuzziness but also effectively tests appropriateness of setting standards in an unstable climate.

HMS BEAGLE: Survey Ship Extraordinary (Anatomy of the Ship)
ASIN: 0393037789 |
Customer Reviews:
In the correct wake.......2000-09-30
In pleasing contrast to the majority of mainstream depictions of Darwin's activities on the Beagle trip, Keith Stewart Thomson's travelogue contains very few historical errors. At least when it comes to the actual whereabouts of Darwin in South America. Thomson's presentation of Darwin's ideas on organic evolution is a bit more foggy, but that matters little as the main focus of the book is to retrace Darwin's anchorages in South America.
The read is easy, nicely contrasting today's luxury of modern oceangoing sailboats and Darwin's cramped accomodations in the tiny HMS Beagle over 150 years earlier.

Book Description
Having survived his rise to Chairman of Everest Capital, the world's largest private equity firm, and the ferocious attempts on his life that ensued, Christian Gillette finally seems safely perched atop the financial industry.
He's just accepted Everest's largest private investment, he's poised to takeover his ex-rival's sinking firm, and he's just embarked on his firm's most exciting venture to date, buying the NFL's newest team -- the Las Vegas Twenty-Ones. Plus, one of his young employees -- an ambitious deal maker named David Wright -- has caught his eye. Wright reminds Gillette of himself just a few years back, and he's drawn to the thought of teaching the wunderkind everything the ups and downs of the industry. But everything comes to a screeching halt when a shadowy man calls him to a meeting, requesting a favor and offering in return new information about Gillette's father and his still mysterious death.
Christian Gillette can't stand to be controlled, but he also can't afford to lose a chance at finally learning something substantive about his father's death. And as he becames more entangled with the strange deal, and the frantic pace of business continues without his full attention, he feels his grip on Everest weakening -- and soon realizes his life is once more in desperate jeopardy. When all signs begin to point to David Wright, Gillette realizes that his toughest decision as Chairman lies directly ahead...

Customer Reviews:
Fast Paced.......2007-06-17
The author is good at moving things along at a quick pace. In this book, Wall Street Financier Christian Gillette returns to battle the forces of evil. Namely, a branch of the Mafia represented by The Carbone Family and a shadowy branch of the Defense Department- DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency)represented by Norman Boyd and his associate Ganze. It turns out that Boyd is trying to get at a small company owned by Gillette's Everest Capital investment firm in order to profit from nanotechnology. Along the way the reader is introduced to the bright and beautiful heiress Allison Wallace who is ready to invest 15 billion dollars from her family into Everest. But. With conditions. Other events of interest are Gillette's acquisition of a professional football team and approvals for a Las Vegas casino as well as his girlfriend the beautiful singer Faith who is under contract to one of Gillette's companies. All this between big financial deals. And don't forget Gillette is a self made success and good guy who counsels his top employees to donate generously to charity. He is also searching for the answer to his father's death in a plane crash. His father had been a U.S. Senator. As well as the identity of his mother. Who was The Protege? David Wright, heir apparent at Everest, who unintentionally murdered a woman during some kinky sex that was secretly photographed by the mafia. Naturally, they used the photos to blackmail him. The CIA enters the picture too. A lot of different subplots but the author ties them reasonably well together in a fast paced read.
A Good Follow-up to the Chairman.......2007-02-08
If you enjoyed the Chairman, you will like this book. I gave the Chairman 5 stars because it seemed like it was a bit darker and more unique with regards to it's development of supporting characters like Coen, and Nigel Faraday, who, unfortunately, is downplayed in the next 2 books.
Disappointed.......2006-11-30
What a disappointment. Frey attempts to work in too many plot lines, his poorly developed characters have no substance other than to assure that they function best as whiny spoiled children. Adults who behave that way in the real world would be out the door of a firm like Everest. My only reason for even finishing the book was because I was on an airplane. Had I a selection of other books from which to choose (or could have found a passenger willing to trade), I would have set this book aside without temptation to learn the ending. I'm disappointed with all of the strings that Frey leaves dangling, clearly setting up the reader for another book in the series. I will not be purchasing that one.
Slow pace.......2006-11-11
Not the best in the Stephen Frey production. The plot is a bore, you can not write three books with the material for one
Too much of a good thing.......2006-10-12
Do you like books about Mafia? How about Corporate spies? Mergers and billion dollar business deals? How about political influence? Like books about exotic places where people are murdered? Books about scientific inventions that can destory the world? Books about the CIA? Books about football teams? How about books about up from the boot straps African American men who make good on hard work and have private detective agencies?
If you like all these things, you still won't like this book. There isn't a popular element of suspense fiction that the author HASN'T sqeezed into this book. And frankly, it's too much. The fact that this was the sequel to another book only made it more confusing. I read lots of sequels without reading the first book, and this one falls very short of the mark for entertainment or realism.
