Excellent description on how leading companies develop leaders.......2006-03-20

Well organized, "Leading the Way" describes how leading companies develop their leaders. In particular, I valued the analysis on Total Return to Shareholders (TRS) increase that the participation of CEOs on leadership development can have. Very useful in communicating why leadership development is important. Highly recommended.

A useful book on developing leadership capabilites.......2004-04-21

"Leading the Way: Three Truths from the Top Companies for Leaders" by Robert Gandossy and Marc Effron, deals with the three leadership truths which they believe provides "critical foundation" to build strong leaders. The three leadership truths are: 1) The CEO and Board of Directors should provide leadership and inspiration (actively involved in leadership processes) , 2) A maniacal focus on high-potential leaders (identify the best talent and providing challenging assignment for them) and 3) Doing the right programs the right ways (developing programs that would help enhance leadership skills). However there are other "Little Things" that organizations should also considered in terms of building leaders such as communication, paving the way for social networks, fostering reciprocity and others which are seemingly unimportant issues or frequently overlooked, but are actually crucial for organizations. These are explained in great details in the book. Finally, the authors feel that leadership programs in general should be link directly to the organization's business strategy.

The last chapter in "Leading the Way" deals with future trends that organizations need to face in order to be successful and five rules that the authors feel were curcial to develop leadership capabilities. I think overall, this is a useful book to learn and understand about developing leaders as the authors provided examples, and anecdotes which are useful in terms of illustrating the authors' point of view. My only criticism of this book is that I wish the authors had structured it better within each chapters. There are many subtopics within each chapter which can be a little confusing and can be combined. However, I do find the short summary in each chapters helpful. Anyone who is interested to know more about developing leaders should definitely read this book.

Easy-to-understand and informative.......2002-10-31

I picked this one up on the strength of the previous "Friendly Guide" (The Friendly Guide to Shakespeare), and was not disappointed. While Hathaway's book is ostensibly about the universe, and does contain quite a bit of information about the subject, a better description might be "Lives of the Astronomers." From Copernicus to Hawking, Hathaway tours the universe by taking a time trip through the many advances of astronomy. Like the guide to Shakespeare, the chapters are short, and sidebars abound. I spent about three months working my way through the book, reading a section or two a night. While it isn't a substitute for Astronomy 301 (the math quotient was thankfully low), this is a nice book for those of us who like to know a little about a lot.

A REAL hitchhiker's guide!.......1999-12-18

What a great book for anyone that has even the slightest interest in space, physics, or just how in the heck everything got here! She takes difficult subjects and breaks them down into interesting "fun facts" that anyone can appreciate and understand. It's simply impossible to not share something out of this book if someone else is in the room while you're reading it!

Good for astronomers (and others, too).......1999-02-17

A Friendly Guide is fabulous! I have read it several times in the several years that I've owned it (and I rarely read anything I don't have to!). Nancy Hathaway devides and subdevides astronomy into small enough bits and mixes enough wit to make it easier to understand for those who don't know much astronomy. The small subsections also make it possible to read for us who do know something about astronomy but are pressed for time.

Takes a dry subject and makes it fun. Great for SF fans........1998-06-06

I originally took this book out of the library when it came out in hardcover as I'm a long-time been a space buff and fan of science fiction but had never really studied any of the science behind it. I had always found astronomy pretty dull, but this book completely changed my views on the subject. Hathaway has a wonderfully light writing style with just enough of a comic touch to keep this book continually amusing. I've since bought my own copy and keep it our on my shelf of books to flip through on a regular basis. It's a must read for any SF fan who wants to know what your favorite characters are talking about and the sectons on the history of astronomy are great as well (especially when she talks about all of the truly bizzare things that people have believed over the ages). This is a great book that makes you fall in love with the wonder of space.

Nancy does an admirable job pulling together exrtremely interesting ideas on her topics! The book is organized so as to be quick to find your topic and easy to continue reading related topics if you choose. Lots of b&w pics and orgaized tables. Works well for finding background info for teaching astronomy topics to all ages. Thanks Nancy!

Total Fantasy - not based in fact........2007-10-04

Please, if you read this book (and I recommend that you DO NOT) consider it complete fantasy. Yes, it has been labled as "fiction", but the author claims it is based on her actual experience. Google her name, or the book title, and read the controversy surrounding this book.

Aside from the controversy, it is poorly written, and the author's racist language is offensive. Don't buy it, and don't read it.

I read this book a few years ago, with utter disbelief. As the review above states, there is no way this woman knew anything about Australia, apart from what she may have garnered off the internet. I rate this book 1 star only because there wasn't a zero star option.

It is a fact across all Aboriginal peoples (and there are more than 1) that a man would NEVER reveal any tribal secrets to a woman and vice versa. This one fact alone tells me the book is utter rubbish. I'm only sorry the Aborigines of Australia could not take a class action against this woman. Don't buy the book. Come to Australia and see for yourself.

Interesting But.....A Fairy Tale/Hoax.......2007-07-09

My wife, a Holistic Healer, is totally enamoured with this book and it's "lessons" of life, living and healing.
After reading it, I looked for more info about the author. Wow, the whole book is apparently a fabricatation to make money and/or advance the ideals of New Age spirituality.
If I had known it was untrue from the beginning, I probably would have enjoyed it for what it was, a story about living in the desert and native ideas of living, one with the earth. However, I feel I wasted a lot of emotion believing her adventures were mostly true experiences. I had doubts numerous times about the truthfulness of experiences she described. She covers for that possibility by claiming in her Forward that the book was a "fictionalized" account to protect the tribe,it's members and their location.
I give it 2 stars because it was an interesting read about living in the outback, and about spiritual beliefs even if her story has turned out to be totally untrue.

Take It For What It Is: Fiction. Period........2007-06-12

I read this book in my 20s, and then again 2 years ago. It is charming and weaves in many of the indigenous traditions that we'd all like to incorporate into our lives. However, this book is a work of fiction and has very little to do with authentic aboriginal culture. This taints the credibility of the author and her book. So, let it inspire you to seek out authentic indigenous lifeways. But be sure to take this book for what it is: fiction.
