Good food for thought.......2004-04-25

When you have no one reporting to you, your job is largely determined by your supervisor. However, when you are a manager, the people who work for you can either ensure your success or make it virtually impossible. This book gives you a lot to think about in terms of how to systematically identify, recruit, and retain the best performers- those people who will make you look best. While I don't agree with all the specifics, the areas discussed are vital to consider. The book is also well written.

The only real downside to this book is that it assumed the employees' market of 1999-2000 would last forever. While that's not true, and companies may accidentally, in employer's markets, be able to get good employees, the best employees will flee to companies that treat them right when the market turns.

A MUST-READ BOOK FOR EVERY EMPLOYER!.......2001-07-09

With over thirty years in business management, I have found one philosophy that works: Always hire a winning player from a winning team - they have learned how to succeed. If you hire a player from a losing team, they have learned how to justify failure.

This book is filled with helpful information on hiring the right employee in the first place, and we all know that with so many wrongful dismissal suits emerging today, that it can be difficult to terminate an employee if you discover, after the fact, you have hired the wrong person. The author also points out where to find top-notch employees and equally as important, how to maintain them. If you have an A1 employee, you have a gold mine! Treat employees with dignity, respect, honesty and appreciation; motivate employees, give them responsibilities, freedom to do the job, just and fair rewards and they will help your company to achieve maximum profits. Next to your customers, your employees are the backbone of your business. They can contribute to your company's success or failure, the choice is yours. This is an excellent book for a small price and certainly worth reading - a five star plus!

A Never-Ending Process.......2001-07-06

I cannot think of a greater challenge to organizations today than to find, hire, and then keep peak performers. This is one of two books which I have just read which suggest excellent strategies and tactics to meet this challenge. (The other is The Employee Recruitment and Retention Handbook, authored by Diane Arthur.) But what if an organization now has few -- if -- any peak performers? Obviously, it must develop them. How? In Hidden Value, O'Reilly and Pfeffer explain how great companies achieve extraordinary results with ordinary people.

You can also hire peak performers. (They think in terms of investment and ROI rather than of cost. So must you.) In my opinion, an opinion with which Chambers may agree, organizations must be constantly, indeed aggressively involved in recruiting all the time. That is to say, at least decision-makers must be identifying "the best and the brightest" workers employed elsewhere. Perhaps there is no need for them now. Even so, it is important to know who they are, to establish contact with them, and then stay in touch. Chambers suggests a number of effective strategies and tactics to do so.

He organizes his material within three predictable Parts: Finding Peak Performers, Hiring Peak Performers, and Keeping Peak Performers. In this volume, he could have added a fourth Part: Recapturing Peak Performers. (He has already addressed many of the key employee-recapture issues in two previously published works, The Bad Attitude Survival Guide: Essential Tools for Managers and No Fear Management: Rebuilding Trust, Performance and Commitment in the New American Workplace.) What I find especially interesting about Chambers' observations and recommendations is that they are equally relevant to finding, obtaining, keeping, and (yes) recapturing customers. His recommendations are based on essentially the same principles although, obviously, strategies and tactics appropriate to employees will be different from those appropriate to customers. In any event, Chambers seems to have covered all of the proverbial "bases" such "Developing Real-World Needs Assessments" (Chapter 2 in Part I), Aligning the Interview and the Needs Assessment (Chapter 7 in Part II), and "Creating the Culture of Retention" (Chapter 10 in Part II). The final chapter summarizes key points. The material seems to be based on a wealth of real-world experience.

As Chambers explains, "This book was written to provide you, the frontline manager, with the real-world tools you need to increase your ability to find, hire, and keep peak-performing employees. You will not find a lot of theory or academically driven processes to program your behavior. You will find experience-based skills and strategies to help you find and keep the people who will have a positive impact on your productivity and, frankly, increase your value as a manager." I include this last portion of the explanation because so many other books on this same general subject (many of them first-rate) seem to approach it in terms of organizational best interests. Fair enough. If I understand Chambers correctly, he addresses the enlightened self-interest of the individual manager. In my opinion, that differentiates his book from them. Therein lies its unique value.

This book is simply fundamental for anyone that is pursuing a PhD in an astrometry related field. It gives a basic view of almost every important topic of the field in a modern way - something that I've been searching for a long time.

Celestial fundamental catalogues are a prerequisite for the determination of absolute positions and motions in space. Presently, positional astrometry is at the watershed between classical fundamental catalogues, based on moving reference stars, and modern catalogues, based on extragalactic reference objects with non-measurable motion. This book addresses the concepts and methods of the respective construction techniques leading to the stellar frame of the FK5 (fifth fundamental catalogue) and to the newly adopted extragalactic radio reference frame, ICRF (international celestial reference frame), with its extension to optical wavelengths by the Hipparcos Catalogue. While principal outlines of meridian circle observations are given, emphasis is put in some detail on the VLBI technique as applied to astrometry, and to the observational techniques used in the Hipparcos mission, including the tie of the originally non-anchored rigid Hipparcos sphere into the ICRF.

As good as the first..........2007-09-18

Sometimes, after the first book in a series, any series, the quality seems to drop. In a vampire series the standards are very HARD to keep up. In most vampire series the second is always kind of weak when compared to the first or even the third.
Not here. Living Dead In Dallas by Charlaine Harris is great. Why? Not only does she draw in new material, new characters, new settings and a couple of plots but she also is daring enough to make her characters feel real, with flaws, merits and desires.
Sookie Stackhouse is a real person with real needs and real fears. You can understand what she wants, what she is feeling and what she wants. You can't help but cheer her on and get upset when bad things happen to her.
I WILL be buying the next book.

"Cocktail waitress Sookie Stackehouse is on a streak of bad luck. First, her coworker is murdered and no one to care. Point is, they saved her life. So when one of the blood-suckers asks for a favor, she complies. And soon, Sookie's in Dallas using her telepathic skills to search for a missing vampire. She's suppose to interview certain humans involved. There's just one condition. The vampires must promise to behave and let the humans go unharmed. Easier said than done. All it takes is one delicious blond and one small mistake for things to turn deadly... "

"Dead in Dallas" is book two in Charline Harris's Southern vampire novels.
Just as the first book (Dead Until Dark) , this was an absolute treat....
Lafayette, Sookie's coworker, has been murdered and left in a truck to be found. Sookie is of course highly upset and wants to find the killer. But doesn't really get the chance to begin her investigation, as she is being sent to Dallas with Bill to find a missing vampire... She is going to find Lafayette's killer when (if) they get back from Dallas.

The book is amazingly entertaining. You will of course meet almost all of the characters from the first book and be introduced to new ones. But even if you haven't read the first book (which I would VERY much recommend),you will very easily and smoothly be led into the story and will be introduced to all the characters gradually... Sookie's trip to Dallas is very exciting, disturbing and of course life-threatening. Not only she is trying to do her job and stay alive at the same time, she is also struggling with her relationship with Bill. And Eric ..... yeah, well , Eric .... You just have to read and find out for yourself how the story evolves, how these amazing characters learn to live with each other, light and darkness, trying their hardest to make it work.
I am reading This series for the second time now, and surprise , surprise .... it just doesn't get boring at any point. I absolutely love these books and highly recommend them. Paranormal romance/mystery lovers, get this book. You are going to fall in love ^_^

Chaos Abounds With Sookie!.......2007-06-17

The second book in the Southern Vampire series written by Charlaine Harris, Living Dead in Dallas, opens with yet another murder of an employee of Merlotte's Bar in Bon Temps, Louisiana. Sookie Stackhouse, barmaid and telepath, discovers the body of cook Lafayette, but she scarcely has time to look for clues to his murder because she once again finds herself at the employ of the vampire community to which her boyfriend, Bill, belongs. So what's a vampire-lover to do? If it's Sookie, she's going to get herself involved in a strange Fellowship, a nest of vampires with its own sense of justice, and have a fight with her boyfriend before returning to the original issue of poor Lafayette.

Living Dead in Dallas is an interesting sequel; while Sookie and Bill are still hot and heavy, you do get the sense from time to time that things are not always peachy in paradise. In addition, Harris throws in a couple more supernatural beings (maenads and werewolves) to keep things intriguing. Sookie is brave and sometimes foolhardy as usual, and Bill often is there to pull her out of danger. The secondary characters, including brother Jason, Sam the bar owner, and Eric the vampire, all return, and their portrayals receive more development throughout the book. Still, the story is chaotic and rambling at times; it veers off into almost a totally different book before returning to the central plot. There are plenty of loose threads that will lead into the next book and one can only hope that poor Sookie doesn't find herself so physically abused in the third endeavor. Overall this is a good read that will leave you ready for the next one. Recommended for the relationships, the mystery, and, of course, the vampires.

SOOKIE'S BACK!!!!!.......2007-06-12

Our favorite little mindreader is back...with a bang. But this little tale begins with the death of Merlotte's cook and Sookie's friend...the flamboyantly gay Lafayette Reynolds, who is found very dead in the back of Andy Bellefleure's car in the parking lot of Merlotte's. Worse yet, Eric, the gorgeous boss of her boyfriend, vampire Bill, has requested her paranormal assistance to his vampire brethren in Shreveport. There is a vampire missing there, and all of the undead want know what has happened to him. Sookie agrees to help, as long as no humans are harmed by any information that she uncovers; and uncover she does. It doesn't take Sookie long to find out what has befallen the missing vamp...and her murdered friend.
With its fair share of mystery, fun and a healthy dose of lust, the Sookie Stackhouse series is not to be missed. It's not often that a literary heroine comes along with the spunk and smarts of our Miss Sookie.
