                Book Description

This volume offers a selection of the best contributions by Russian scholars--historians and philosophers of science--to the Einstein Studies industry, broadly construed. Most of the papers included here were first published in Russian in the 'Einshteinovskiy Sbornik' series (Einstein Studies), the first of its kind, and initiated in 1966 by Nobel Prize winner Igor Tamm. From 1966-1990, fourteen volumes of the 'Sbornik' were published by Nauka, the chief academic publisher in the former Soviet Union. The book explores such topics as the historical and foundational issues in general relativity and relativistic cosmology, Einstein's contributions to quantum theory of radiation, and the rise of Dirac's quantum electrodynamics. The volume also includes a detailed description of the physics colloquium Einstein established and coordinated in 1912-1914 in Zurich. The contributors draw extensively on documentation previously unavailable to most scholars. Thus the materials from various Russian archives shed new light on the famous exchange (regarding the first evolutionary cosmological models) between Einstein and Aleksandr Friedmann in the early 1920s and on the role of Boris Podolsky and Vladimir Fock in the emergence of quantum electrodynamics. The little- known correspondence between Einstein and a famous German pilot Paul Ehrhardt suggests that, during World War I, Einstein was involved with aero- and hydrodynamics and thought about ways of improving airfoil design. Other articles discuss new approaches to important questions in the foundations of general relativity and cosmology. Historians, philosophers, and sociologists of science should be prepared to find much new and unexpected material in this engaging volume presenting the best of the recent Russian scholarship in the field. The book will be accessible to the general reader as well.

                    Book Description

The images on the cover call attention to the relationship between macro observations and the intimate structure of chemical substances and the changes, both chemical and physical, that they undergo. Fireworks: One of the ingredients is phosphorus, a molecular form of which is believed to consist of linked tetrahedra of phosphorus atoms. The chemical reaction of phosphorus with oxygen is partly responsible for the spectacular show of light. Carbon: The element is found in several forms, including the familiar diamond and another, recently discovered, sooty substance that consists of soccer-ball shaped molecules, often referred to as "buckeyballs." Diamond is not the most stable form of carbon and is created from other forms of carbon at high temperatures and pressures deep within the earth. Acetylene torch: Cutting steel is possible because of the intense heat generated by the chemical reaction of acetylene with oxygen, a reaction between molecules of C_2H_2 and O_2 to give CO_2 and H_2O. Hot air balloon: The air that helps it rise is heated by the combustion of molecules of propane, each composed of three carbon and eight hydrogen atoms. Stormy weather: The evaporation of water serves to store energy provided by the sun. Subsequent condensation of the water vapor releases this energy and is the basis of all the weather systems on our planet.

                      Book Description

Gosse argued that the world had indeed been created by God in six days, but had made the earth to appear as though it was already ancient, complete with factitious "evidences" of prehistoric life. Gosse's work was popular with neither Christians nor evolutionists.

                      Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars not for the scientifically uneducated.......2007-04-14

Gosse makes a pre-Darwinian attempt to solve the hen-and-egg riddle. A chick cannot survive without its mommy, he argues, so he opts for the hen.

To account for this, Gosse maintains that the newly created adult animals and plants matured in the mind of God, or in "ideal" or "prochronic" time. The time following the Creation he calls "actual" or "diachronic" time.

Gosse christens his brain-child "prochronism," but it has come to be known as the "Gosse hypothesis" or the "Omphalos hypothesis."

Skeptics admit that this hypothesis is not falsifiable, but point out that it is not verifiable either. Skeptics further suggest that diachronic time could have begun not only in prehistoric times, but at any point in the past. In satire of Gosse's book, these skeptics have coined a hypothesis which they call "last Thursdayism."

You say that your friends and relatives remember sharing an experience with you in years past? I will only say that those witnesses were created last Thursday with memories similar to yours. You say that you have wedding certificates and birth certificates? I will only say that those documents were created last Thursday.

I have found these comments amusing, so I expected the book to be amusing also. I was disappointed. The author goes on a lengthy summary of prehistory which can be followed only a person well-educated in geology. Then he goes on a lengthy description of plant and animal species which only a person well-educated in biology could follow. "Ciliated gemmule"? "Monadiform germ"? No comprendo!

If you really want to learn something about science, this book might be for you. If your motives are insincere, like mine, don't bother.

4 out of 5 stars Valued as a primary source.......2000-07-01

Grosse was apparently the first to publish the idea that God might have created the earth with the appearance of age. For this reason, and its value in understanding the history and philosophy of science, I give the book four stars. Otherwise the book was a good example of nineteenth century scientific writing: too many words, excessive examples and illustrations. There are a few very quotable lines spread throughout the text, but most of the book is redundant.

4 out of 5 stars Omphalos--A Meditation on the Concept of Creation ex nihilo.......2000-04-29

Philip Gosse's little book is a gem of quiet, reverent thinking by a talented biologist. He simply (and unusually, for his age) was courageous enough to ask the question, "how would the earth and all its various interconnected systems look different than they do now, if the world had been created in an instant by a single creative act?" To explore this question, he asks his contemporary young earth creationists to follow him on an imaginative journey back to the very first day of the earth's creation, and he examines the nature of various living things that he sees. Do the trees have rings? Are there seeds just now sprouting from the ground? Do Adam and Eve (and all the mammals) have hair? Teeth? Bones? Belly-buttons?

Every living thing in the world, he begins to prove, is part of an interconnected temporal system, and has a four-dimensional nature that goes to its very core. Nature cannot be created ex nihilo without creating time ex nihilo and nature's whole process "in medias res", so to speak.

This is where Gosse's meditation has been so misunderstood. His argument is that IF the world has been created out of nothing by an act of creative power, AND that event happened recently as his fellow churchmen were fond of claiming, THEN there could be no physical evidence of the point at which that creation took place. To put it crudely, the world is by nature a spinning top, and if it has been created at all, it has been created spinning, and there will be no finger-marks on it, no scars of a sudden acceleration.

Gosse's thoughts were directed at the believers of his time, and were not intended to convert skeptics. It is sad that his prejudice against Darwin and the evolutionists (which he shared with most people of his day, believing and non-believing) has been held against him.

The next step for a 21st century person of belief is to think beyond Gosse about the Big Bang.

Owen was the founder of the Natural History Museum, bringing the collections over from the British Museum. Although he was a supporter of evolutionary theory, he was reluctant to accept Darwin's version of evolution. This volume examines fossil evidence for change in species over time.

Bestselling author Nora Roberts has another classic on her hands with Heart of the Sea. This final installment in Roberts's faerie tale trilogy returns readers to Ardmore, Ireland, where the Gallagher family's pub is the heart of the community. Passionate and beautiful, Darcy Gallagher works as a waitress in the family pub while looking for a way to achieve the glamorous lifestyle to which she would like to become accustomed. Enter wealthy American builder Trevor Magee, whose Irish roots have drawn him back to the childhood home of his grandfather to build a theater. As Darcy and Trevor revel in the heated sexual attraction that flares between them, neither believes that they are the final key to end an ancient spell that separated Carrick the Faerie Prince and his human lady love, Gwen. But Ireland is a magic place, where the faeries dance among mere mortals and love blossoms under starry skies. Let veteran storyteller Nora Roberts transport you to the Emerald Isle, home of the little people and overwhelming passion. --Alison Trinkle

This book fell off my wife's bookshelf, which made me pick it up and decide to read it. I hadn't read the first two books in the trilogy, but have read a couple of Roberts' other books. As a romance, I enjoyed the feisty aspect of the couple. I fully enjoyed Darcy's independence and appreciated that those qualities remained even after she realized she was in love. The part of the book that did not work for me was that so much of it revolved around the building of the theatre. I thought it was emphasized to such a degree that I fully expected the theatre to be completed by the end of the novel and hear an account of the first concert with the Gallagher family. Instead, we get mired in Trevor's inability to fall in love and say he loves Darcy. While I understand guys who are commitment-shy, it seemed so belabored that by the final pages I was tired of Trevor's romantic stupidity. I also thought that having a record label is a very speculative business, as is building a theatre. The fact that his family had huge amounts of money could explain his ability to dally in the arts, but it hardly seemed like the bedrock of a multi-million dollar multi-national corporation. The fairy story with the ghosts was quaint, but there wasn't much of a bang for the buck there. The legend assumes that dead people have hormones much as the living that results in a dead person mating ritual. I found that story line disrespectful. The Gallagher pub sounded like an interesting place to visit. However, the story seemed to have loose ends and remained incomplete as it abruptly concluded. I would have liked a chapter that projected the characters into the future a bit for us.

5 out of 5 stars My Favorite Trilogy.......2007-06-01

I was recently introduced to Nora Roberts through her In the Garden Trilogy, which I only enjoyed two of the three. Since then, I have jumped head first into reading her books and have experienced quite a few enjoyable reads, both through individual books and trilogies. On a whim, I picked up these three books and, within days, I was finished with the third book. This would have to be my favorite of all her series and by the end of the third book, I was wishing that I hadn't gone through them so fast. The Gallagher family was a blast to read and I enjoyed everything from their family dynamic, to their pub and also the Irish setting. I've already passed them off to a co-worker and am looking forward to reading them again. Roberts also made me fall in love with Ireland through her wonderfully described setting and Irish tales. Highly recommended reading!

Do you believe in fairies? Do you have a fondness for the Emerald Isle? Do you believe in true love? You will after reading this enchanting trilogy by Nora Roberts. Thank goodness I purchased all three books at the same time as I couldn't wait for the pages to turn. The characters are so endearing, I often felt that I was inside Gallagher's pub or walking with them over the green hills of Ireland on a "soft" day.
