Book Description
Astronomy was a popular and important part of Victorian science, and British astronomers carried telescopes and spectroscopes to remote areas of India, the Great Plains of North America, and islands in the Caribbean and Pacific to watch the sun eclipsed by the moon. Examining the rich interplay between science, culture, and British imperial society in the late nineteenth century, this book shows how the organization and conduct of scientific fieldwork was structured by contemporary politics and culture, and how rapid and profound changes in the organization of science, advances in photography, and new printing technology remade the character of scientific observation.
After introducing the field of Victorian science to the nonspecialist, the book examines the long periods of planning necessary for eclipse expeditions, and it recounts the day-to-day work of getting to field sites, setting up camp, and preparing for and observing eclipses. Operating behind the countless decisions made by scientists was a host of large-scale forces, including the professionalization and specialization of disciplines, the growth of service, and public funding for the sciences. Fieldwork also required close coordination with the many institutions and technological systems of British imperialism.
The development of imaging technologies was, of course, crucial to observations of the solar corona. Eclipse observation taxed astronomers and their cameras to their limits, and it raised new questions about the trustworthiness of imaging technologies. In the late nineteenth century, scientists shifted from drawing to photographing natural phenomena, but the shift occurred gradually, unevenly, and against resistance. Victorian astronomers had to weigh carefully the merits of human and mechanical observation, and the difficulties of solar photography highlight the inseparability of images from technologies of observation and printing.

Description:
This work describes a technique for the rapid, selective and sensitive electrochemical flow injection analysis of carbofuran in foods using air stable lipid films in which acetylcholinesterase was incorporated. These lipid films were supported on a methylacrylate polymer (i.e., methacrylic acid was the functional monomer for the polymerization, ethylene glycol dimethacrylate was used as the crosslinker and 2,2'-azobis-2-methylpropionitrile as an initiator). The substrate was injected into flowing streams of a carrier electrolyte solution. Hydronium ions produced by the enzymatic reaction at the lipid film surface caused dynamic alterations of the electrostatic fields and phase structure of membranes and as a result ion current transients were obtained; the magnitude of these signals was correlated to the substrate concentration, which could be determined at the micromolar level. The response times were ca. 10s. These lipid membranes were used for the flow injection analysis of pesticides. The principle of the method is based on the degree of inhibition of the enzyme by the pesticide. Carbofuran was chosen as a typical pesticide. The novelty of the method is based on the fact that an ''air segmented'' flow injection technique can be used as compared to previous systems that are based on lipid film technology but are not stable in air. This allows determination of the pesticide using the degree of inhibition and reactivation of enzyme by injections of substrate. Carbofuran was determined at concentration levels of 10^-^7 to 10^-^9M. The investigation of the effect of potent interferences included a wide range of compounds usually found in foods and also proteins and lipids. The technique was applied in 50 different real samples of fruits, vegetables and dairy products. The recovery ranged between ca. 96 and 106% which shows no interferences from the matrix effects.

Description:
A potentiometric oxygen electrode was successfully used to produce a microbial biosensors with an extended response range, based on immobilised yeast cells (Saccharomyces ellipsoideus). The response for ethanol takes ca. 7min for the steady-state method and 2 min for kinetic measurements. A linear calibration achieved over more than two decades of ethanol concentration. Selective determination of ethanol in the presence of non-volatile compounds was achieved using a second PTFE membrane to cover the biocatalytic layer.

Description:
A rapid and sensitive screening qualitative method using a surface plasmon resonance (SPR) biosensor was developed which can detect of all fenicol antibiotic residues in shrimps from a single sample extract. This method requires ethyl acetate extraction followed by a single wash with isooctane/chloroform. Each sample extract is injected over the surfaces of two biosensor chip flow cells, one surface having the capability to detect florefenicol amine (FF amine), florefenicol (FF), and thiamphenicol (TAP) and the second surface for chloramphenicol (CAP) detection. The estimated detection capabilities (CC@b) were 0.1, 0.2, 250, and 0.5ppb for CAP, FF, FF amine, and TAP, respectively. This quick, simple test allowed the detection of CAP residues in shrimps at the minimum required performance limit (MRPL) of 0.1@mgkg^-^1 for this compound and of FF, FF amine, and TAP below their maximum residue limits (MRLs).

The facts don't support his theory.......2001-07-11
As with the rest of the books in the Critical Moments series this one goes into exhaustive detail of the timeline of the event in question, the effect on each different Phyla, global evidence and local ramifications. This part of the book is up to the exceptional standards of the rest of the series.
Where the author goes wrong is in his belief in that this extinction event was the result of a meteor impact. Just taking the data presented in this book shows that the theory doesn't hold up. The timing doesn't work (the event took over a million years). Isotopic (iridium) data doesn't support it. The impact craters are too small and at the wrong points in time. The pattern of extinction does not match what would be expected from a major impact event. The list goes on and on. The author tries gamely to explain away the irregularities but by the end of the book I found it clear that the extinction was almost without question not the result of an impact.
That said this is a good book. The author covers the time period and the event in exceptional detail and does cover many of the other competing theories very well. It's just unfortunate that the author could not set aside his cherished preconceptions. But perhaps that is a tough thing to ask for any of us.

Book Description
“Dazzling . . . Modern thriller, Ramayan epic, courtroom drama, slapstick comedy, wartime adventure, political satire, village legend–they’re all blended here magnificently.”
–The Washington Post Book World
This is the story of Maximilian Ophuls, America’s counterterrorism chief, one of the makers of the modern world; his Kashmiri Muslim driver and subsequent killer, a mysterious figure who calls himself Shalimar the clown; Max’s illegitimate daughter India; and a woman who links them, whose revelation finally explains them all. It is an epic narrative that moves from California to Kashmir, France, and England, and back to California again. Along the way there are tales of princesses lured from their homes by demons, legends of kings forced to defend their kingdoms against evil. And there is always love, gained and lost, uncommonly beautiful and mortally dangerous.
“A commanding story . . . [a] harrowing climax . . . Revenge is an ancient and powerful engine of narrative.”
–The New York Times Book Review
“Absorbing . . . Everywhere [Rushdie] takes us there is both love and war, in strange and terrifying combinations, painted in swaying, swirling, world-eating prose that annihilates the borders between East and West, love and hate, private lives and the history they make.”
–Time
“A vast, richly peopled, beautiful and deeply rageful book that serves as a profound and disturbing artifact of our times.”
–San Francisco Chronicle

Customer Reviews:
I hated for it to end........2007-09-12
This was one book I just couldn't put down, and I was dreading when it would end. It has a style all it's own.
Shalimar the Clown.......2007-09-05
Rushdie has an amazing grasp of the English language. He could have written nonsense--luckily, he does not--and I would still have enjoyed it because of the way he artfully spells it out on paper.
better than the last two.......2007-08-28
This was a good story, particularly the last quarter of the story. Rushdie's prose style is entertaining, though without a good story, it can be difficult to enjoy. The Ground Beneath Her Feet and Fury each struck me as really lacking. Rushdie was working outside his normal setting---mostly in western, crossing to eastern, rather than eastern passing to western--and it didn't work. Here, there was the magical aspect (toward the end) that helps the story transcend. I don't need to hear about rock and roll from Salman. I do need to hear about the cultures and language and imagery from someone who knows better than me, namely him. Sadly, gone are the mystic days of Midnight's Children and the Moor's Last Sigh. But Shalimar's walking on air builds the tension and excitement that reminds me of Shame, in which the crazed beast-girl circles into her target at the end. The pages almost seem to catch fire with the rush. Shalimar isn't quite there, but it's fairly good. As always, there seem to be some politics are work nearby. Rushdie discussed some of this with Fareed Zakaria, specifically the "unrest" in the Kashmir region. That conflict is the underlying setting for the novel.
Rushdie does the impossible!.......2007-08-22
I didn't think it was possible to top Satanic Verses and not in a million years Midnight's Children, but the author has done it. Shalimar is fantastic. What accolades does one hang on the book that tops the Booker's Booker Award winner? Bravo Mr. Rushdie!
Understanding the killer clown........2007-07-27
"There is nothing funny about a clown in the moonlight."--Lon Chaney.
Booker Prize winner, Salman Rushdie's (1947) 2005 novel, Shalimar the Clown, tells the story of India, the illegitimate daughter of a former American ambassador to India, Maximilian Ophuls, now a counterterrorist expert. The novel opens outside India's Los Angeles apartment, where Ophuls is brutally murdered by his enigmatic chauffeur, the book's title character. Readers are left wondering if it was a terrorist attack.
More of a political thriller driven by revenge than a novel about terrorism, Rushdie's suspenseful narrative soon reveals through several flashbacks that, while in Delhi, Ophuls seduced a beautiful Hindu girl, Bhoonyi, who was Shalimar the clown's Kashmir wife, and the object of all his love and affection. Not wanting to return to her village, Bhoonyi intentionally gets pregnant and Ophuls is forced to leave the country. The baby girl, India, returns with his wife and is raised in the West. Meanwhile, Shalimar channels the anger of his betrayal into becoming a renowned Jihadi assassin. As one would expect from Rushdie, the writing here is nothing less than impeccable, and perhaps more accessible than the inspired prose of his earlier works, Midnight's Children (1981) and The Satanic Verses: A Novel (1988). Highly recommended, except for those with coulrophobia.
