I have been in the retained search business for over 18 years and Lou's book is the only book and related seminar program to "hit the proverbial nail on the head" when it comes to interviewing and assessing top talent. Lou gives numerous case studies and examples to illustrate his ideas, unlike many books which leave you with such a superficial level of information that you sense they were nothing more than hot air. The best part of Lou's book is that you could skim the contents and walk into an interview and gain a very high confidence that the candidate can achieve the results you desire. This sensible approach to hiring has forever changed my approach to personnel staffing.

POWER Hiring Is Excellent and Here's Why.......1999-10-25

I have used Lou Adler's POWER Hiring for over 3 years now. I have been a recruiting/ employment professional and consultant for 32 years and have seen a great number of methods, processes and procedures come and go. I have to say, this is by far the best of the best! Not only has this proven successful for me, but I have taught the methodology to quite a few of my clients. The response has been overwhelmingly positive. In my consulting capacity, I have the opportunity every day to observe the candidate/employer selection process. I also see the end results of the selection as I talk to employees who tell me about the latest hire that didn't work out very well. I frequently hear from the candidate who didn't match the new position and has a desire to search for a new position, often due to the misinformation presented in the interview process. I have observed that mistakes are made in a very high percentage of cases. It takes a lot to make an effective match. An employee might perform above average in one situation/culture and very average or below in others. For example, a Controller position in one firm may differ dramatically in terms of size and scope of responsibility, skills required, expected deliverables, etc. Just as not all Controllers are created equal, neither are the jobs. POWER Hiring is very effective in focusing on the factors of the specific position vs. the skills and talents of the candidate, with the end result being a drastic reduction in hiring errors. According to articles in three major publications, the problems and recommendations in Lou Adler's book do address the correct issues. A recent Harvard Business Review article identified ten major interviewing mistakes -- known to most professionals -- but a constant struggle unless a technique like POWER Hiring is used. Training Magazine has a current article calling for something more than traditional "behavioral interviewing" to deal with increased preparation (and sometimes lies) on the part of interviewees. The POWER Hiring approach probes much deeper than traditional behavioral interviewing -- and solves this problem by switching from "having" to "doing." Spectrophysics shows how observations of atomic and molecular spectra can be related to the environment of the emitting or absorbing particles, with particular applications to astrophysics, plasma physics and atmospheric physics. The first part of the book describes the relations between the structure of atoms and simple molecules and their spectra, including complex atoms, which are not normally covered in introductory texts. The second part treats the effects of temperature, density, pressure, collisions with other particles, and so on. I found this book highly humorous. It was easy to read. Yes it is highly fluffy but fluffy is good. It is somewhat different than many books in this genre. It really concentrates on the vampire part more than the romance part. This is a good thing. However the ending itself is way too fairy tale. I am not sure why but I wanted something more to the ending.

Okay - For a start to a series.......2007-03-10

I didn't realize that Rowen was starting a series with this book. Now knowing that, I can be more generous rating it.

Sarah Dearly is a snappy character who always seems to have a handy one-liner for every situation. Her sarcastic outlook makes even the most dire situations seem more humorous.

Theirry is a bit of an enigma. You don't really get to know him in the book, other than when other characters say that he likes Sarah. You have to take that on faith. I'm sure he'll be filled out more in the following volumes.

I have a hard time with the label "romance," since the romance isn't really there. As other reviewers have mentioned, there seems to be more chemistry between Sarah and Quinn than her and Thierry, but, hey, I'm not the author.

Pros: Humorous vampire-chick-lit-romance. Light reading for a "fluff book" mood. Great main character, interesting take on vampires/vampire lifestyles. Quick read.
Cons: Not really a romance in the strictest sense of the term. This book doesn't really form a complete story; the upcoming sequels will have to flesh out the situations more fully.

Overall, I would recommend it, but only to those with the patience to look out for the sequels, or who can enjoy the forest for the trees (or in this case, the book for its snappy one-liners).

Chick Lit Vampire story.......2006-11-16

This book was more chick lit than romance. From the blurb on the back, I thought the book was going to be more like a light vampire romance like MJ Davidson, Kerrilyn Sparks, or Katie MacAlister. But the romance is missing, as is personality in all the characters.

The story started out well w/ the heroine being turned into a vampire against her will on a blind date, but w/in pages of her being turned into a vampire the story starts to go down hill in the first chapter. I really couldn't find myself interested in any of the characters, from the reflectionless immortal vampires that have never learned how to fight back against slayers even though they heal and outnumber them to any of the lackluster personalities of: the heroine, the suicidal vamp hero whose motto was to run and hide, the slayer turned vamp possible love interest, or the villainous slayers who had no reason for killing other than they enjoyed it.

Like a previous reviewer wrote, I found more romantic tension between the heroine and Quinn, the slayer turned vampire then the vampire, Thiery. There was absolutely no reason for the heroine and Thiery to romantically inclined. They barely even spoke to each other the entire book. In addition, Thiery's wife relating to his past personality of cowardly personality and hands off approach didn't endear him as a hero.

I wouldn't recommend this book, and if you do, buy it only used.
