Customer Reviews:
It's a Biography...........2001-03-16
I read the book Working Wounded in a couple of days. It is actually a quick read and rather humorous at times. There is a lot of great reference material in there.
The author was really writing his own biography throughout most of the book. I am thrilled that he had such wonderful oportunities in the past and in his future.
This book is best just for the Bibliography. Unfortunately, it doesn't have one so you have to read it chapter by chapter to get the books that may be relevant to what you need additional information to.
Good Luck, Bob! To everyone else, buy a different book, see if someone will loan you theirs, go to the library. Save the dough, because I don't think you will find it as insightful as the title implies.
Working Wounded. As If Dilbert Came To Life..........2000-06-24
I bought the "Working Wounded" as a gift for the members of a team I once worked on. I felt that many of the situations that Bob Rosner brought to light measured up with how we dealt with our day. It went over quite well, and was entertaining as well as enlightening. I look forward to a second volume.
This book could have been so much more.......2000-04-15
I heard the last 5 minutes of a radio interview with the Bob Rosner and had great hopes for this book. He interviews a lot better...

Great cartoons, shallow insight
Winning your personal war with workplace woes!.......1999-03-24
A humorous and informative collection of essays by a syndicated columnist, with the assistance of a talented cartoonist, Robert Mankoff, that addresses some of the most common, disturbing and intractable problems folks, at any level, face in the day-to-day workplace. From being assaulted from above to battered from below to surviving layoff or dismissal, this entertaining book gives down-to-earth advice. The theme is that solutions to your workplace problems need to be devised by you. Liberally peppered with cartoons, quips, brief stories and quotes, this work provides a lot of to-the-point guidance. Book Description
Thoroughly updated and re-conceived, Astronomy, Ninth Edition, equips the introductory astronomy student with the essential tools for understanding the cosmos. Michael Zeilik has revised the pedagogy of his successful textbook based on recent research in astronomy education. Significantly shorter than the previous edition, the ninth edition is organized into four concept clusters: Cosmic Distances, Heavenly Motions, Celestial Light and Spectra, and Scientific Models. Material has been streamlined throughout to make the descriptions, concepts, and explanations clearer. Each chapter ends with a concise summary of the concepts in each cluster. Each chapter contains at least one Celestial Navigator, a concept map that provides a visual guide of major concepts in the chapter and explicity shows their connections. Throughout, illustrations have been updated to be clearer and more understandable to the novice student. Michael Zeilik, Professor of Physics and Astronomy and former Presidential Lecturer at the University of New Mexico, specializes in innovative, introductory courses for the novice, non-science major student. In 1998, he was appointed a Research Fellow at the National Institute of Science Education. Zeilik's work has been supported by grants from the National Science Foundation, NASA, the Exxon Educational Foundation, and the Slipher Fund of the National Academy of Sciences. In 1997, the 8th edition of Astronomy: The Evolving Universe won a Texty Award from the Text and Academic Authors Association. In 2002 he was awarded the Astronomy Education Prize by the American Astronomical Society.
Customer Reviews:
Starry, starry night..........2004-05-23
Zeilik's book is one of the earliest systematic astronomy texts I ever read, beginning with the third edition back in 1982. That edition had four primary sections - Part I: Changing Concepts of the Cosmos; Part II: The Planets, Past and Present; Part III: The Universe of Stars and Galaxies; and Part IV: Cosmic Evolution.
Part I looks at the general structure of the universe, how it was conceived in the past, and how it is viewed today. Much of what is covered here falls under the general heading of cosmology. Zeilik has an interest in the history of astronomy, and it shows clearly in the text. He explores, among other topics, the Anasazi prehistoric astronomy discoveries, the Ptolemaic geocentric model, Tycho Brahe/Kepler's achievements, the discoveries of Newton and Galileo, and finally the birth of modern astrophysics. Some basic physics is introduced along the way, to make sense of radiation and optics, as well as gravitation and space-time concepts.
Part II looks at the nine planets of our solar system, including their satellites (moons), and the asteroids and other solar system objects (comets, etc.). Planetary sciences are among the fastest developing sciences around, so a lot of the information contained here is basic, and some updating is required. There is no mistake that the most current version of this text is now in its ninth edition. The final chapter in this subject looks at some of the theories of the origin and development of the solar system.
Part III looks at the universe beyond the planets, looking first at the sun as a typical small star, and then going further afield to look at the Milky Way, our local galaxy in some detail. This includes a look at other major formations and stars within the galaxy - some named stars of interest as well as celestial objects such as nebulae, and a discussion of interstellar distances and distribution (Hertzsprung-Russell diagram, etc.). The structure, kinematics and dynamics of spiral galaxies are explored, and then other types of galaxies (elliptical, etc.) and galactic clusters.
The final section, Part IV, looks at general evolution and development of the universe. Stellar evolution is the first subject, as one of the primary vehicles of universal development. The different ways in which a star dies are explored - white dwarves, neutron stars, supernovae, black holes, pulsars. The larger ideas of the origins and ultimate fate of the universe (cosmology again, at the end) are explored, including a brief discussion of the origins of life in the universe, and short discussions on topics such as SETI (called CETI here, Communication with ExtraTerrestrial Intelligence).
One of the useful aspects of this text is the 'Beyond the Book' sections after each chapter. These include information about periodicals (often the best way to find the latest information on astronomy topics), additional books and other resources. There are learning objectives listed at the beginning of each chapter, and convenient summaries, and some short exercises at the end of each chapter also.
There are several useful appendices, including lists of stars, planetary data, periodic table, and other such information. A very good glossary and index round out the book, making it an excellent text book for both classroom and independent use.
Great book for all.......2000-05-06
If you were ever interested in what is going on above in heavens, but didn't want to trouble yourself with too much equations and other non-esential stuff, then this is the book for you. It is a textbook, and it reads as a textbook. You'll find that everything is included: from our Solar system, to the nuclear processes in the stars, to the black holes. Descriptions are as they should be for the non-pros: comprehensive and simple (yet not trivial), well presented (love those many color pictures) and to the point. Great for an occasional star-gazer as well as astronomy students to revise their knowledge. And the Night Spectra Quest is a neat beginner's tool to examining star spectra. If you get more interested after studying this book, I recommend "An Introduction to Modern Astrophysics", which goes more deeply into the study of astrophysics and cosmology.

The Violent Universe: Joyrides through the X-ray Cosmos
ASIN: 0521833256 |
Book Description
Science journalist Govert Schilling takes the reader on a whirlwind journey through time by describing the evolution of the cosmos, from the beginning of space and time fourteen billion years ago, to the creation of the Earth and humankind. Ending with a glance into the distant future of the universe, the book's combination of compelling text and breathtaking photographs provides an impressive vision of the place of man in the cosmos. Govert Schilling is a Dutch science writer and astronomy publicist. He is a contributing editor of Sky and Telescope magazine, and regularly writes for the news sections of Science and New Scientist. Schilling is the astronomy writer for de Volkskrant, one of the largest national daily newspapers in The Netherlands, and frequently talks about the Universe on Dutch radio broadcasts. He is the author of more than twenty popular astronomy books, including Flash! (Cambridge, 2002), and hundreds of newspaper and magazine articles on astronomy.
Customer Reviews:
A masterful description of time and space.......2007-04-09
Govert Schilling (with an excellent translation into English by David Wray) has managed to explain the entire history of the Universe in some 127 pages and in a most beautiful and poetic way (reminiscent of Carl Sagan). The breadth of his coverage is only matched by his eloquent description which is sure to touch the hearts of scientist and layman alike. With such a vast coverage, he, of course, cannot go into the intricate details of each subject but yet he manages to capture the essence of each topic and hardly misses any important topic that relates to the subject at hand. From the first quantum of time after the Big Bang (just 1 x 10^-43 seconds after) to the end of the Universe in a whimper some 10^100 years later, he describes the important milestones of cosmic evolution - the creation of matter, the first atoms, the separation of the four fundamental forces, the cosmic dark ages, the age of recombination, the first stars and subsequent generations of stars, supernovae, black holes, the synthesis of the heavy elements, the first galaxies, the formation of solar systems, the evolution of life, the ultimate end of human life and of the Sun and Earth, and finally the slow death of the universe itself! Not much is left out. An astonishing number of details are presented in a non mathematical way but yet the poetic beauty of his descriptions fills your mind with pictures that unfold with every page. Speaking of pictures, the book is filled with beautiful color astronomical pictures and paintings on almost every page as well but believe me, the words alone are enough to touch your very soul. If every there was an answer to the age old question, "What is the meaning of life?" - this is it!

Book Description
The tragicomedy of a young man in NYC, struggling with the reality of his mother's death, alienation and the seductive pull of drugs.
Customer Reviews:
"Partying is such sweet sorrow." .......2007-07-29
His writing style has been compared to Hemingway, Fitzgerald, and Waugh. Jay McInerney's (1955) breakthrough novel, Bright Lights Big City (1984), tells the story (in second-person narrative) of an unnamed, divorced ("sexually abandoned"), 24-year-old protagonist's exit from the New York City fast lane. By day he works as a fact checker for a literary magazine, and by night he immerses himself in the trendy New York party scene. (Much like his protagonist, McInerney himself worked as a fact-checker at The New Yorker and was no stranger to the NYC social scene.) With his unique wit, McInerney's coming-of-age, urban-angst novel offers scathing insights into the mid-1980's cocaine party culture. I also recommend McInerney's more recent novels, Brightness Falls (1992) and The Good Life (2006).

Best book out of the Literary Brat Pack era.......2007-07-07
I've read all of the brat back authors, and I wouldn't jump in and say that any of their works are magnificent literary masterpieces. Bight lights, big city, however, is by far the best novel to come from this period. High Points: Excellent, unprecidented use of 2nd person narrative; witty, satiric, paraodic, and humanistic at heart; very accesible, nothing too over the top, and it avoids pointless refernces to the flat pop-culture of the 80's. I actually have no complaints about this book, but then I don't think many people are going to be talking much about it hereafter. It is more of an entertaining artifact of the 80's than a great work of literature.
Witty, not funny........2007-06-02
I found this book to be frustrating and sad. At first, I thought the unnamed main character was your typical yuppie who is caught up in Manhattan's fast paced, drug induced night life because that is what young, unattached adults do. But then you find out all the bad things that have happened in his life. The drug induced night life made more sense. It was his way of coping with his loses. I thought the writing was clever. Maybe too clever. Some reader's found humor in it. There were some witty parts. "Tad's mission in life is to have more fun than anyone else in New York City, and this involves a lot of moving around, since there is always the likelihood that where you aren't is more fun than where you are." I wouldn't classify this book as "funny" however. I think the writer found an interesting way of describing how a young guy, living in a fast paced world of the 80's, is dealing with loss and loneliness.
Bright Lights, Big City.......2007-02-09
First of all let me nail my flag to the mast - I'm a Jay McInerney (and Bret Easton Ellis) fan. I know a lot of people aren't - but then I'm cooler than a lot of people.
Interesting from the opening line and written in the second person ("You are not the kind of guy who would be at a place like this at this time of the morning"), Brights Lights, Big City is a satirical portrait of a young lost soul trying to find meaning in an apprantly meaningless world. Set in New York City in the 1980s our hero walks zombie-like through clubs, self-indulgence, drugs and meaningless relationships. He hates his job and is basically a mess who is wasting his life. Just as we were beginning to think that our hero has an amazingly shallow existence - he is revealed as being more than a simple waster. He has, in fact, been abandoned by his new wife, is estranged from his family and has aspirations to be a writer of fiction. He is human after all and the question he faces is whether or not he can be bothered to get his life back. Will cynicism or optimism prevail?
McInerney (like Ellis) is often dismissed as a writer of disposable "drug stories" with little literary ability. I disagree. If you are able to look a little deeper you will find plenty of interesting social commentary.
Dealing with loss.......2007-01-19
This is a very sensitively and humanely written novel about a young New Yorker who must deal with several great losses: of his beautiful fashion model wife who abandons him when she moves to France, of his job as a magazine editor, and of his mother. At first I find him self-indulgent and silly, but as I get to know and understand him better, he turns out to be merely sad. Hence, his increased bar hopping and abuse of cocaine.
He acts as if he does not care about the loss of his job through carelessness and indifference. He becomes increasingly depressed and comes close to developing a nervous breakdown. The search for his wife is sadly pathetic. I developed a real empathy for this young man and came to realize that under similar circumstances, he could be you, me--any of us. By the conclusion of the book, through meeting someone new and a cathartic experience, he finally confronts the painful memories of his mother's death. He sees that he "will have to go slowly...and learn everything all over again." He is on his way to recovery.

Book Description
Jen Lancaster hates to burst your happy little bubble, but life in the big city isn't all it's cracked up to be. Contrary to what you see on TV and in the movies, most urbanites aren't party-hopping in slinky dresses and strappy stilettos. But lucky for us, Lancaster knows how to make the life of the lower crust mercilessly funny and infinitely entertaining.
Whether she's reporting rude neighbors to Homeland Security, harboring a crush on her grocery store clerk, or fighting-and losing-the Battle of the Stairmaster- Lancaster explores how silly, strange, and not-so-fabulous real city living can be. And if anyone doesn't like it, they can kiss her big, fat, pink, puffy down parka.

JEN ROCKS.......2007-10-10
This is one of the funniest books I have ever read, and I read a lot! It made me laugh out loud. Everyone should read Bright Lights. I have bought this book for my friends because I don't want to lose my copy of it. I look forward to Jen 's next book.
Fantastic.......2007-10-09
It was embarrassing to read this book in public as I could not control my laughter.Jen Lancaster is witty, brilliant and beautifully honest, right up there with Burroughs and Sedaris.
So FUNNY it makes being bad look good!.......2007-10-03
Jen takes on temp jobs while waiting for her advance check from selling her first book. To fill the extra hours, she has written a hilarious memoir about her ordinary life experiences. Cross her and you may be the lucky recipient of one of her crafty letters that you wouldn't believe someone would have the nerve to write. (And what a great tool for releasing anger) If your one of her stay at home friends, you may be on the recieving end of funny daily scoops that rival a soap opera drama, and much more interesting by far. -The thing is you never read any e-mails from them, so their lives must be dreadfully boring in comparison.
I've never had a book make me laugh out loud (even in public) like this one did! This girl has lightning quick wit and humor. Actually, reading this made me feel a little more sane. (Thanks Jen:) I thought I had an overactive mind, she's definately got me beat, and her thoughts are way funnier than mine could ever be! Her behavior and mouth are so excusable because she's just hilarious. She really does make being bad look good.
This is a keeper. When I'm feeling low and needing a good laugh, I'll be reaching for this. Reading this will make passing the time (in line or Dr's office or anywhere) much more pleasant. Just know that it is very likely to make you bust out laughing in front of everyone!
Jen Lancaster's world.......2007-09-27
Bitter is the New Black, Jen's first book, was wonderful. This second book is great, but I feel it falls a little short of the fullness of BINB. Not as much of an actual story line, just tons of funny scenarios and banter - which are all great, but I'm not as anxious to find out what happens next (when does Jen find a job, how will they survive the next month, etc). It definitely still keeps me chuckling page after page though. Since there is not much drama in this book, I am enjoying getting to know Fletch a little more.
HILARIOUS!.......2007-09-10
I couldn't put this down, it is so funny! I was laughing and chuckling so hard that I even annoyed my husband (who is not nearly as patient as Jen's husband, Fletch). She writes what the rest of us are thinking, but are now too politically correct to say out loud. Awesome. I check www.Jennsylvania.com every morning in my little cube farm for a chuckle. I can't wait for the next one.

Customer Reviews:
SPY Assassinates The Literary Brat Pack.......2000-07-13
The late great satirical magazine SPY took upon itself the duty of harassing those oh-so-fashionable novelists of the 1980's: Tama Janowitz, Bret Easton Ellis, and especially Jay McInerney (who got a cover story by his angry ex-wife.) This book is a parody of Cliff Notes and features SPY's trademark withering sarcasm. It's really quite nastily entertaining. Most of it was written by Paul Simms, who later went on to write and produce the marvelous sitcom "NewsRadio." (One of the authors mocked here at the beginning of his career is David Foster Wallace, who has gone on to reveal himself as a major talent.)
Spy at its finest.......2000-03-11
For anyone who had to read any of those dreadful 1980's "voice of his/her generation" books, and I find it hard to believe that anyone ever read any of them voluntarily, this sendup is a must. This sort of satire is what made the old Spy great.
