ASIN: 0070464278 |
Book Description
Get any training session off the ground fast-- or jumpstart one whenever it lags--with the more than 400 proven activities in the bestselling Games Trainers Play series. Their names may range from ``Tombstone Planning'' to ``The `Nobel' Prize Winner,'' but these brilliantly offbeat, unexpected, disarming, fully reproducible games have one serious mission: to coax even the most reluctant groups to talk, laugh, think, and work together. Page after page of fun, easy-to-plan tear-out exercises help you: break the ice and get participants acquainted; shake up outworn habits and perceptions; challenge with thought-provoking brainteasers; test learning and retention; develop communication and listening skills; bring out and involve participant-leaders; win back lethargic, distracted, low-energy groups; encourage creative problem-solving; boost or reinforce a group's self-image; forge cohesive work teams that value group effort; facilitate transfer of training to the job.
Customer Reviews:
a pretty good buy.......2002-08-19
The games in this book require few props, which is one reason i like it. However there are many numerical and verbal exercises which might not be suitable for all groups. The games are well classified and easy to find in the book. The ones on creative thinking, learning and communication are particularly good. I work with students and have used many of the games with success. This book can be used for any type of audience, overall it is a pretty good buy.

Discoveries and Opinions of Galileo
ASIN: 0226162311 |
Book Description
Publication of Galileo's Starry Messenger in 1610, detailing startling observations with the newly invented telescope, sparked immediate furor among the astronomers and philosophers of the day. The discovery of the "Medicean stars" (the satellites of Jupiter) was pronounced a hoax, an optical illusion, a logical and theological impossibility. Stillman Drake, one of the world's foremost Galileo scholars, recreates in Telescopes, Tides, and Tactics the fascinating aftermath of the publication of the Starry Messenger. Drawing on Galileo's scientific working papers and the letters and notebooks of his colleagues, Drake presents an imaginative Galilean dialogue using the text of the Starry Messenger as a departure point for discussions of appropriate scientific method, new discoveries, and the emergence of a new world view at this early stage of the Scientific Revolution.
Drake has revised his earlier abridged translation of the Starry Messenger, and for the first time the entire work is presented here in modern English. No other edition or translation of this famous work has analyzed Galileo's recorded observations in detail, compared them with modern calculations, or explained the later use he made of them. In the accompanying fictional dialogue, Salviati, Sagredo, and Sarpi reread the Starry Messenger in 1613 and discuss events and issues raised in the three years since its publication. Much of the dialogue is based on archival materials not previously cited in English. Drake has unearthed a wealth of information that will interest the lay reader as well as the historian and the scientist—descriptions of the various and occasionally bizarre critics of Galileo, a reconstruction of Galileo's promised book on the system of the world, his tables of observations and calculations of satellite motions, and evidence for an early tide theory. It was this theory explaining tides by motions of the earth, rather than the influence of Platonic metaphysics, Drake argues that played a major role in Galileo's acceptance of Copernican astronomy.
Telescopes, Tides, and Tactics is a thorough portrait of Galileo as a working astronomer. Offering much more than a commentary on the Starry Messenger, Drake has written a novel and absorbing contribution to the history of physics and astronomy and the study of the Scientific Revolution.

Book Description
This book explores ways in which systematic patterns are used to infer evolutionary processes. Among evolutionary biologists and systematists there is a constant interchange between those that study the process of evolution (e.g., mutation, selection, speciation) and those that study its patterns (e.g., variation, geographic distribution, ontogeny, phylogeny). Because patterns influence the development of theories, and processes yield patterns, it is not always easy to distinguish one from another. This book is dialectic and helps crystallize a continuing debate over the relationship of patterns to process theories.
Key Features
* Contributions by leading systematists, evolutionary biologists, and philosophers
* Illustrates the debate over how and if evolutionary processes can be inferred from systematic patterns
* Illustrates a continuing interplay between systematics and evolutionary theory

Book Description
This volume contains two chapters of direct interest for applications: The magnetic vortex states and transformations and the effects of c-axis coupling on the transport properties. In addition, the isotope effect is reviewed, since reliable data on ultra-pure samples are now available. The lattice vibrations (phonons) have been explored extensively by inelastic neutron scattering and infrared absorption and these types of data are reviewed as well. The interesting properties of the superconducting doped fullerenes are described; some of their most fundamental properties are shared by the superconducting cuprates. This book with its subject index, like the earlier three volumes in this series, will be found useful both by people entering the field and by workers who are already active in it.

Book Description
Five questions dominated the ARW on Physics and Materials Science of High Temperature Superconductors, of which this book forms the permanent record. Briefly, these are: (i) How close are we to a unified theory? The consensus is that we are not. (ii) Flux pinning: can it be achieved in bulk materials? Still an open question. The following three questions are related. (iii) Can grain boundary contributions be brought under control? (iv) What is the real requirement for purity and general chemistry control? (v)What is the practical outlook for bulk products - tapes and wires? One of the conclusions is that the geometry and dimensions in thin films are the key parameters that facilitate the realization of high current densities and, consequently, their commercial application. On the other hand, the very large number of poorly understood microstructural, chemical and mechanical variables involved in the preparation of bulk materials are currently prohibiting large scale commercialization of wires and tapes.

Download Description
"A weapon designed to decimate the Roman Empire has just become the number one threat to the United States. From the national bestselling author of The Lions of Lucerne, Path of the Assassin, and State of the Union comes the most gripping international thriller yet featuring Navy SEAL turned covert counterterrorism agent Scot Harvath. ""Scot Harvath is the perfect all-American hero for the post-September 11th world."" -- Nelson DeMille When a mystery thousands of years in the making threatens to catapult the enemies of America to a sure and decisive victory, the only person the president can call for help is the man the administration has just fired. Caught live on Al Jazeera in an off-the-books operation, Scot Harvath's career has been terminated and he is forced to go to ground as the president bows to pressure from a ruthless senator with her sights set on the White House. But when the tide in the war on terror suddenly turns against the U.S., the president has no choice but to secretly bring Harvath back inside. Ducking a congressional subpoena, Harvath travels to the Mediterranean, where he learns of a shadowy organization that has been combing the earth for decades in search of the ultimate weapon to use against the United States and her allies. Now, after three summers of record-setting heat across present-day Europe, one steadily melting Alpine glacier has given up an ancient secret--one with the potential to thrust civilization back into the Dark Ages. From Cyprus, London, and Paris, to Italy, Switzerland, and Saudi Arabia, Harvath must race against the clock to stop one of the greatest evils ever to face the United States. With his characteristic high-voltage action, sweeping international locales, and meticulous research, Brad Thor has created another supercharged novel that is sure to thrill. "
Customer Reviews:
Blowback.......2007-10-10
Brad Thor is great. First time I read one of his books was when I was searching for something to read while relative in hospital. The book and another were finished before my relative was out of the hospital.
fantastic!.......2007-10-01
Brad Thor scores again with Blowback, a whipcrack thriller that tackles religious fanaticism and international terrorism with verve and style to spare. His protagonist, Scot Horvath, has been sent out to pasture by a meddling politician, but soon is brought back into the fold to take on a villain with a taste for biological weaponry. Alarmingly prescient and well-researched, it delivers the goods. Definitely check out James Macomber's A Grave Breach if you enjoyed this one.
B+.......2007-09-17
This is a good thriller, that is fast paced, and with interesting characters and dialoged, very entertaining. That's the good news, the bad, is the plot is absurd; the science behind the bio weapon is laughable, a trip down the Jurassic Park style crypto-biology fiction that's a million times less likely. And the main characters is an active duty US Navy SEAL, but who worked for the US Secret Service (can't happen, violation of federal law), then went to work for a supper secret foreign intel/ counter terrorism unit in US Dept. of Homeland Security, the Secretary of Homeland Security has no control over...... WHAT?
BUT, it is entertaining, Thor gets the terrorism thing, and understands modern fascist Islamic radicalism, and his characters are likable. This is not his best book, but it is worth the read.
Very Entertaining, great book........2007-07-08
For a recent trip I ordered both Blowback and Takedown. Both were great books and very entertaining.
Blowback was a good read if you have an imagination.......2007-05-16
I can only imagine the people who didn't like this book, lacked an imagination, or consider themselves superior in some ways; i.e. a book critic. I found the book a real page turner. Maybe it's my background in Medicine, maybe it just clicked with me, I'm not sure. Some of the plot may be a bit far fetched compared to reality, but guess what people, it's FICTION. I don't remember people getting up out of the theater at Star Wars shows in the 1970's saying "bah light speed is impossible, a Wookie absurd, or the Force is a joke". Really, I'm not sure why some people even read fiction. I read it to escape reality, and enjoy the trip. Well, I enjoyed this trip to the extreme. Read the whole book during a slow day at work, and continuing till about midnight that same day until I finished. First book I've read front to back in same day, especially considering I still had to work, and home responsibilities of wife/kids. While you may hear readers complain about stereotypes of Muslims, or the "impossibility" of the plot. I'll just say that stereotypes occur for a reason, and "impossible" is only considered that until it happens. Many things in our history were considered impossible. Man flying for example. Anyway, I liked this book as much as most of my Ludlum collection. A+++++ I think ;)

Customer Reviews:
Forget It.......2007-03-10
I quit on page 2. The hero is African-American. He is National Security Advisor to the President. He is sober, driving within the speed limit in his BMW. Two white DC policemen stop him -- and call him the N-word, the MF double-word and like that. Gimme a break.
1. I doubt there are two white policemen in DC much less two driving together.
2. Why doesn't he flash his credentials? Are these birds really going to hassle the National Security Advisor??
This scene is nonsense. Why bother to read more?
Couldn't finish it.......2004-12-09
Sorry, but the main character of this piece was so unbelievable I couldn't finish the book. His reactions to the events around him are so phlegmatic that he comes across as one-dimensional. Why should I worry about what happens to the main character, when he's so nonchalant about his own best interests that he *leaves the scene of a crime*, thereby implicating himself and stymying the investigation. If Condoleeza Rice had a boyfriend and she found him dead, her life would become pure hell. She would most certainly NOT be allowed to continue to advise the President, comment on national security matters, or be sent abroad in any official capacity. The idea that the hero of "Blowback" can do that while not even being inconvenienced by a police investigation is ludicrous. I couldn't continue reading this silly plot.
Very fast action.......2002-10-15
This book moved along very quickly, which is something I appreciate, since I hate wading through long and useless pages of description. I did have a little trouble believing some of the heros actions, like when he comes home to find his girlfriend murdered. Why didn't he give his name when he called 911? And how could he possibly leave if he really cared about her? I also found it hard to believe that someone working in the white house would be so phsyically fit and good with a gun. On the whole, however, the book was interesting, packed with very readable action scenes, like car chases. A good read if you aren't interested in a great deal of depth and you don't mind that the main character makes all these "heroic" choices, rather than realistic ones.
written to be a movie.......2002-06-07
Action-packed and reads like the author was planning on selling the movie rights. Not much character development. Highly improbable plot. No White House advisor, the job of the main character, would act so foolishly, have the physical prowess of a superman, and be the one advisor who can figure decipher intelligence reports to predict that India is planning to wage war on Pakistan. Not even Martin Sheen's assistants are this good.
Intriguing and Fast Paced.......2002-05-16
Set against the backdrop of the Nation's Capital and the political heartbeat of America, Blowback by Eric James Fullilove is a thrilling and fast-paced adventure read. The protagonist, Richard Whelan has it all. He's a Harvard Grad and is the National Security Advisor to the President. He's living large in the national's capital, has a nice ride and a trophy lady on his arm...oh did I mention that she was white? So what could go wrong? Everything when he's picked up for Driving While Black and framed for a murder as well as various security breaches that he didn't commit. Whelan's, high-powered friend, a Black Female(of course), Bettina, comes to the rescue to help him out of the demise that he faces. Bettina must help keep him alive and safe in order to stop a nuclear detonation that someone is hell-bent on setting off.
Blowback is a well-written and believable novel that's spookily scary as it rings true of real life events going on in the world today. Fullilove appears to have a background in the story he writes, and, if not, he has done a superb job researching the topics for the storyline. The narration is tight and taut, the plot line complex, intriguing and thrilling. My only disappointment with the book was that the non-stop action took away from character development; Blowback is definitely a plot-driven book. That aside Blowback is a page-turner. This is a one-night, do not-put-it-down read. If you like books that involve governmental conspiracy, betrayal, and cover-ups then add Blowback by Eric James Fullilove to your to read list.
