Customer Reviews:
An Absolutely Essential Source of Information and Counsel.......2004-07-29
This is the Fourth Edition of an exceptionally valuable book which was first published in 1991. Weiss has updated his material to accommodate new laws, regulations, and court decisions which are directly relevant to discrimination and EEOC guidelines, employee verification and security, technology issues, sexual harassment, negligent hiring practices, management of people with disabilities, affirmative action, discipline and termination policies and procedures, defamation, violations of privacy, the Family and Medical Leave Act, evaluations and promotions, sex and age discrimination, and labor law.
As is also true of previous editions, the subtitle correctly indicates that Weiss explains "safe hiring, managing & firing practices to keep you & your company out of court." He organizes the material as follows:
Part I Safe Hiring Practices [re recruiting, interviewing, and employment decisions]
Part II Safe Management Practices [re evaluations and promotions, preventing sex discrimination and sexual harassment on the job, employee action laws and labor rights]
Part III Safe Firing Practices [re discipline and firing practices, public policy, management of older employees]
With Weiss's guidance, it is possible for the decision-makers in any company to complete what amounts to a comprehensive "audit" of any and all areas in which that company could be vulnerable to litigation. Of at least equal importance, the same "audit" will help the company to determine precisely what its obligations are as an employer as well as what the legal rights of each employees are.
Perhaps it would be helpful to those who read this commentary if I now provide a brief excerpt which is representative of the quality of Weiss?s counsel throughout the entire book. I have deliberately selected an especially troublesome area, one which has been the focal point of countless lawsuits: Employee Performance Evaluation. According to Weiss: ?Subjective rating systems in themselves are not illegal. The EEOC and the courts recognize subjective job standards such as communication and leadership skills) and that the words [in italics] good, satisfactory, poor, and unsatisfactory [end italics] carry within them subjective elements. So where do they draw the line?
1. When standards are unequally applied or do not exist at all; and
2. When someone shows that the standards or their absence produces disparate treatment in promotion and compensation policies, as for example:
? When sex stereotyping tainted the process by which a woman was denied a partnership in a [major] accounting firm or
? When subjective decision making torpedoed promotion policies that have disparate impact on minorities.
EEOC and court rulings encourage objective performance appraisals, but they discourage using them as a subterfuge for discrimination.?
Weiss devotes all of Chapter 6 to explaining HOW to formulate policies and procedures so that all evaluations and promotions are ?safe.? That is, they are in full compliance with all applicable regulatory laws, rules, and regulations.
Throughout this brilliant book, as Weiss rigorously and thoroughly examines hiring, managing, and firing practices which are both ethical and legal, he explains What You Can Do and What You Cannot Do. However, with all due respect to Weiss, qualified legal counsel should be consulted to ensure that all of a company's policies and procedures are "fair, square & legal." One of the many value-added benefits of this updated edition is that Weiss identifies a number of ?Cases? at the end of each chapter to which his readers and their legal counsel are referred. There are 17 cited at the end of Chapter 6.
An organization?s policies and procedures concerning employment law must then be carefully explained to all of its employees as well as contained within an employee manual. If at all possible, the same policies and procedures should be readily available online. Of course, they must be rigorously and consistently enforced. Even so, there may yet be frivolous lawsuits but at least the company has done everything possible to prevent them and is thus much better prepared to obtain a favorable decision in a court of law if and when involved in litigation.

Book Description
"Middle and executive managers, whether intentionally or unintentionally, frequently violate the law and get themselves and their companies into deep trouble. Only carefully crafted, enforceable (and enforced) policies, and ongoing training can provide safe methods for managing in a diverse workplace." --From the Preface
It's a fact that employees today have more legal rights than ever before--and they're more willing to sue if they think those rights have been violated. It's also a fact that this can spell trouble (with a capital "T") for you and your company. If you're not aware of the innumerable risks surrounding every interaction with someone who works for you, you're opening yourself up to potential legal problems--and all their associated costs.
So there couldn't be a better time for a new edition of FAIR, SQUARE & LEGAL, the classic guide that's been helping managers stay out of legal hot water for almost a decade. Now completely updated and revised to reflect new regulations and court decisions, FAIR, SQUARE & LEGAL is the perfect antidote to an increasingly litigious workplace.
You'll find the most current information on a variety of legal concerns surrounding: * New EEOC guidelines and the confusions they create * new legislation governing team formation * new court decisions regarding sexual harassment * defamation and violation of privacy * recruitment and hiring * evaluations and promotions * discipline and firing * affirmative action issues (including the ramifications of Proposition 209) * negligent hiring practices * managing people with disabilities * the Family and Medical Leave Act, and other issues.
But despite its subject, FAIR, SQUARE & LEGAL is not full of legalistic jargon. What it is full of is clear, concise jargon-free language, definitions of important terms, practical guidelines for what to say and do, fictionalized stories that illustrate both problems and solutions, and actual case studies of precedent-setting court decisions. This book is exactly what you need to treat your employees fairly and keep yourself and your company out of court--or at least defend your actions if you do wind up there.
Customer Reviews:
This Book Could Save Your Organization.......2001-01-05
For small-to-midsize companies competing in a litigious society, this book is more than a "must read": it is an absolutely essential source of information to which decision-makers (especially owners) of such companies should constantly refer. The term "frivolous lawsuit" is really a misnomer. Check a reputable dictionary of synonyms and you will learn that the word frivolous connotes "trivial, trifling, piddling, unimportant, insignificant, inconsiderable, petty, and paltry." On the contrary, an adverse decision resulting from a so-called frivolous lawsuit can destroy a company which has limited resources...or at least create truly serious problems for it, most of which are preventable.
The subtitle of Weiss's book correctly indicates that he explains "safe hiring, managing & firing practices to keep you & your company out of court." He organizes the material as follows:
Part I Safe Hiring Practices [re recruiting, interviewing, and employment decisions]
Part II Safe Management Practices [re evaluations and promotions, preventing sex discrimination and sexual harassment on the job, employee action laws and labor rights]
Part III Safe Firing Practices [re discipline and firing practices, public policy, management of older employees]
With Weiss's guidance, it is possible for the decision-makers in any company to complete what amounts to a comprehensive "audit" of any and all areas in which that company could be vulnerable to litigation. Of at least equal importance, the same "audit" will help the company to determine precisely what its obligations are as an employer as well as what the legal rights of its employees are.
Ultimately, with all due respect to Weiss, qualified legal counsel should be consulted to ensure that all of a company's policies and procedures are "fair, square & legal." They must then be explained to all employees. Finally, they must be rigorously and consistently enforced. Even so, there may yet be frivolous lawsuits but at least the company has done everything possible to prevent them and is thus much better prepared to obtain a favorable decision in a court of law.

Book Description
Seeing Stars is written for astronomers, regardless of the depth of their theoretical knowledge, who are taking their first steps in observational astronomy. Chris Kitchin and Bob Forrest - both professional astronomers - take a conducted tour of the night sky and suggest suitable observing programmes for everyone from beginners to experts. How is this book different? We are all familiar with the beautiful images of planets and galaxies obtained by spacecraft and giant telescopes - but what can you really see with a small telescope? What should you expect from a small refractor or reflector? And what is the effect of observing from a site near a city? The answers are all here, with many photographs that will illustrate exactly what can be seen with different instruments (everything from the naked eye to a 300mm telescope) - and from different locations.
Customer Reviews:
Very useful introduction to the observation of the night sky.......1998-09-18
A must have for owners of small telescopes, this book guides you through the different kinds of celestial objects and their observation. The authors show the view of an object through scopes of different sizes, which makes it easy for the observer to know what to expect from an object he wishes to observe.

Rave Reviewing Student.......2005-07-31
This is a fantastic study guide. Do not let the other reviewers deter you because the book does not provide the answers. That is exactly the point to this book! The questions are excellent and thought-provoking. If you want to test your knowledge of organic chemistry, and especially to prepare for the MCATs, this is the best study guide. I have researched them and this one by far is the best and most likely to assist you in mastering the course.
Annoyed Student.......2001-09-24
This book would be good if it had answers to the questions, but with 1001 questions and no answers, it is pointless. Don't waste your money, with a little searching one can find better study guides. The implication with this book is that if a student knows the material as good as they should, they should know wether or not their answer is correct. I still would like to double check my answers, though.
Not a good study tool!.......2001-01-14
Ok, I got this book to study for an grad school entrance exam. It was not worth the money. There are NO answers provided for the question. Although, each part of organic chemistry is divided into sections of questions, there are still NO answers for the questions. The book gives 'hints' which are absolutly unhelpful to the reader. Look for another study guide, and don't get this one, you will be disappointed.
Very helpful.......2000-02-23
If you want to pass organic chemistry and the exams are multiple choice - this is the book for you. It can also serve as an excellent review if you are considering the MCAT. Be warned, however, that there is no answer key for this text. If you want answers, try EXAMKRACKERS 1001 Questions in MCAT Organic Chemistry.

Ed Abbey called The Monkey Wrench Gang, his 1975 novel, a "comic extravaganza." Some readers have remarked that the book is more a comic book than a real novel, and it's true that reading this incendiary call to protect the American wilderness requires more than a little of the old willing suspension of disbelief. The story centers on Vietnam veteran George Washington Hayduke III, who returns to the desert to find his beloved canyons and rivers threatened by industrial development. On a rafting trip down the Colorado River, Hayduke joins forces with feminist saboteur Bonnie Abbzug, wilderness guide Seldom Seen Smith, and billboard torcher Doc Sarvis, M.D., and together they wander off to wage war on the big yellow machines, on dam builders and road builders and strip miners. As they do, his characters voice Abbey's concerns about wilderness preservation ("Hell of a place to lose a cow," Smith thinks to himself while roaming through the canyonlands of southern Utah. "Hell of a place to lose your heart. Hell of a place... to lose. Period"). Moving from one improbable situation to the next, packing more adventure into the space of a few weeks than most real people do in a lifetime, the motley gang puts fear into the hearts of their enemies, laughing all the while. It's comic, yes, and required reading for anyone who has come to love the desert. --Gregory McNamee
Book Description
Ex-Green Beret George Hayduke has returned from war to find his beloved southwestern desert threatened by industrial development. Joining with Bronx exile and feminist saboteur Bonnie Abzug, wilderness guide and outcast Mormon Seldom Seen Smith, and libertarian billboard torcher Doc Sarvis, M.D., Hayduke is ready to fight the power—taking on the strip miners, clear-cutters, and the highway, dam, and bridge builders who are threatening the natural habitat. The Monkey Wrench Gang is on the move—and peaceful coexistence be damned!
Customer Reviews:
The Monkey Wrench Gang by Edward Abbey.......2007-07-14
Fast-paced tale of anarchy and revolt against the destruction of the natural beauty and majesty of the American West. Funny at times and always gripping, this book is also disturbing in that it provides perhaps too much "how-to" information and could be dangerous in the wrong hands. Mr. Abbey's point is well made, though, and graphically brought home through his excellent descriptive powers of the West that Was vs. the West that Is Becoming. His deep love for nature and pain for its degradation are evident in every syllable of his writing.
Don't Read It for Its Literary Value.......2007-06-04
The story is fun, though, especially if you're familiar with the remote desert of Southern Utah and Northern Arizona. The dialogue was really terrible at times and the characters were interesting but strained credulity. The meat of the story is the landscape and the political implications of the tale. This book would make a perfect read on a backpacking trip in the Glen Canyon Wilderness area.
A Brilliant Adventure.......2007-05-09
This is one of the most memorable books I ever read. A super adventure in southern Utah. Don't miss it. "The Brave Cowboy," by Abbey is also good.
abbey is my hero.......2007-01-07
i still have not RECEIVED this book! You people are incredible (not in a good way!)
your service leaves EVERYTHING to be desired!!!!!
Eco-Terrorists as anti-heroes.......2006-10-04
I was familiar with this book several years before I chose to read it. I knew that it was about a bunch of "lawbreakers" who, in a spirit of environmental idealism, set about to ruin what they considered myriad evidence of massive anti-environmentalism. Their activities included the destruction of highway billboard advertisements, burning and exploding bridges that carried hugh oil tankers across them, as well as sabotaging the oil tankers themselves, and blowing up government built dams that resulted in the drying up of some of nation's most majestic rivers. The four members of the "Monkey Wrench Gang," Doc A.K. Sarvis, his feminist girlfriend Bonnie Abbzug, Joseph "Seldom Seen" Smith, a polygamist Mormon, and George W. Hayduke, also wanted some payback for massive deforestation and for the forced death of thousands of cattle and other animals who were fenced in by barbed wire, thereby prevented from escaping from fierce winter snows and related frigid weather conditions.
At first, I expected to detest these "weirdos" and their wooly headed schemes. The idea of "inconveniencing" the general public by destroying structures built by the government and by private interests (huge billion dollar earning oil corporations) for the so-called public good seemed excessive. Well, the proof was in the reading: these were four sincere, committed, environmentalists, true believers, who were fed up with governmental shennanigans and the general public's passive acceptance of these activities promulgated in the name of progress.
Doc Sarvis, the organizers of the gang, always insisted that no people ever be hurt in their destruction of the myriad anti-environmental structures. Both Bonnie and Seldom Seen Smith were humane, ever loyal to their group and to their ideals. In fact, all four of them were likeable and even loveable individuals. I found George Hayduke, a Vietnam War veteran, a member of the Special Forces, the most loveable of the four. On the surface, he appeared to be a strange man: inordinately hairy, bearded, unkempt, sloppy, almost derelict looking, he lived by his wits and his natural intelligence. Despite the obvious personal and psychological baggage that he carried from his Vietnam days, he possessed an elemental force that proved valuable to the group and to their plans time and time again. Hayduke's earthiness, his liberal use of foul language, to the constant dismay of one of the gang, gave him an extremely funny, if, somewhat "psychopathic" persona. Some of the things that he said and did, and seemingly got away with, should and must be taken with a grain of salt.
_The Monkey Wrench Gang_ works as an exciting adventure novel, a cautionary tale on the habitual, governmentally engineered environmental abuse, as a character study of four very brave, if foolhardy, environmentalists, and quite simply just an incredibly fun book to read.

Product Description
Grant Stevens, a mid-level manager for the Bureau of Reclamation, only wanted to build dams. He never imagined he would be swept into a desperate race against an environmental terrorist bent on restoring the Colorado River by blowing up the dams. Left temporarily in charge of the Bureau, Grant must react when the first dam is attacked. He faces the unthinkable task of mitigating the massive flood roaring down the Colorado. The flood will eventually threaten the mighty Hoover Dam, and if Hoover fails, the other dams downstream will fall like dominos. Working with the FBI, Grant uses his engineering skills, river knowledge, and plenty of gut instinct in an attempt to outmaneuver the terrorist. The chase will lead all the way downstream to the Gulf of California in a cat and mouse game where the stakes are high and the potential for destruction is enormous.
Customer Reviews:
Thrilling page-turner!.......2007-09-19
I thoroughly enjoyed reading Wet Desert. It is rare for a book to generate such a compulsion for me to turn the pages. I felt as if I was being pulled through the book. It's fast-paced, intelligent, thought-provoking, cohesive, and entertaining. Wet Desert not only met those criteria, it takes a place among my favorite books, in company with others from Clancy, Crichton, Grisham, and Cussler.
I liked the fact that it was technical enough to lend credibility, but not so much as to be tedious. Characters are well-defined and remain believable and consistent throughout the story. The book presents some thought-provoking issues and offers fascinating facts and insights, but for the most part allows the reader to draw his or her own conclusions. Specifically, the novel provides interesting historical details about the Colorado River, the Glen Canyon and Hoover dams, Lake Powell, and the Colorado River Delta. I found it so intriguing that I did further research, starting with Wikipedia. (In fact, you might want to refresh your knowledge of the Colorado River before you read.) Most importantly, I couldn't wait to set aside time to read Wet Desert and looked forward to turning each page from beginning to end.
I just couldn't stop reading until the last page was turned!.......2007-07-31
I sat down to have a nice cozy read, and found that I was riveted. This is one of those books that you want to read in one sitting. For once, the hero works for the government, and the bad guy is an over-the-top environmentalist. While that isn't "politically correct," it was refreshing and extremely well done. I really liked the book, and recommend it to anyone!
Hansen needs to write more books if this is an example of his talent. An amazing book for a first-time author.
Wonderful.......2007-07-16
This book is absolutely fantastic. Once I started to read it, I couldn't stop! I read until the early morning hours, slept for a couple of hours and picked it up to finish it. I hope Gary Hansen writes more novels.
AWESOME!!!.......2007-05-18
This book was amazing! The research that went into its writing is incredible and the author does an outstanding job of making it all totally understandable and believable. A fast-paced read that keeps you turning the pages from beginning to end. This book is a 'stay in your robe curled up on the couch one day read' kind of book. I loved it!
Excellent plot - very exciting.......2007-05-17
When I read "Wet Desert" by Gary Hansen, I had heard of the book, but wasn't expecting such a rivoting plot. Gary is a very good writer, and I hope he will publish more books. I had a hard time putting the book down, because there was always something going on - and I would wonder "what is going to happen next?" I have already recommended this book to many people.

If you are a fan of R. Crumb and Cactus Ed this is a great Calendar. I wish I could bring myself to cut it apart and frame it because it does belong on the wall. R. Crumb definitely knew the characters and did a great job in revealing their stories through their expressions in these pictures.
