Customer Reviews:
Not Enough Hands On!.......2003-06-11
This book was more touchy-feely to me than practical. I have taught extensively in the past, and do not need a book that gives me fundamental pedagogical skills -- I already possess them.
I was looking for a book that would assist me in converting a course from face-to-face to online. This book has an extensive section on the technologies required to teach online, which will be helpful to those who have never used computer before; to me, it was a waste of space.
There is no discussion of merits of different instructional design methodologies, and not a lot of concrete examples of how to teach online. This is a very light book, and I wouldn't use it anywhere except possibly to familiarize upper management with the logistics of online teaching.
For those teachers/professors/instructors/educators who are going to be on the front lines of online education, you can give this book a pass.
Talks about Teaching First!.......2001-06-18
Finally, a book about online teaching that actually talks about TEACHING! It sets the context in education pedagogy and then gives the practical suggestions. Now teachers will have something to work from, other than just the mechanics of the technology. This will launch them on a successful TEACHING experience and better student retention.
A web site comes with the book, but not all the references in the book are on the web site and some of the links on the site are broken.
Still for those of you thinking of teaching online, the book is written in a language that you can understand - one of teaching and learning.
Practical Information, Helpful tips and tricks.......2001-04-10
Finally a practical, useful book covering both the background materials and basic information needed to select a delivery system, develop a course, and conduct a class at a college level. Moore, Winograd and Lange combine to present materials that are not biased toward one publisher or delivery system. They share details on many of the major players in the field, and permit the reader to apply the the lessons learned to developing their own course to be delivered via F2F or distance education.
Emphasis is given to helping the faculty member personalize the online learning experience for the student. Various teaching styles are discussed and hints for applying web enhanced experiences are given.
Appropriate attention is given to the task of translating content of the course to an online mode. Hints and tips are included for creating syllabus, assingments, discussion questions and other tools that will increase interactivity. Once the course is "designed", they step the reader through many of the details and mechancis of actually converting the materials to online format.
Time is taken to help the reader realize that once the course is created, the real work is ready to begin. Implementation includes conducting the class utilizing the designed materials and making any modfications and/or changes that are necessary as the semester progresses. Tips include maintaining a schedule throughout the week, and providing rich, rapid feeback to the students. Evaluation techniques are discussed with the idea of being able to improve the course materials, format and schedule in the future.
This book provides a number of checklists and tables that will be valuable tools for the reader. The companion website is a valuable list of resources and hyperlinks that provide hours and hours of fun.

Customer Reviews:
Great Introduction to Astronomy.......2007-09-14
For adults and children alike, if you are interested in learning more about the night sky, this book is a great place to start. This book is very well written, concise and to the point, but full of useful information. There is a lot of practical information such as how to tell time and direction from the heavens. The author's description of the constellations includes identification tips as well as the fascinating mythology behind the names. Whether you want to continue on and learn more about astronomy or just have a better appreciation for the heavens without this book is well worth the read.
Rhythms section and Constellations section gave overview........2001-03-18
I liked this book because of tthree sections. Rhythms and Patterns gave a wonderful introduction to how the night sky moves and how to observe it without expensive equipment. The Useful Universe section gave me tips on how to use the day and night sky to understand your surroundings and navigate if lost. The Constellations section used the stories of the Constellations to relate one area of the sky to another in an easy conversational manner. Be warned that some of the Greek Myths are a little racy.
If you want to start enjoying astronomy without complex technology than this is a great book.
Recommended ages....Readers 12 and over, However it would also make a good read aloud book to children under 14.

Pop quiz. Please complete the following sentence: "There are days when I get up in the morning and stagger into the bathroom and begin running water and then I look up and I don't even recognize my own _." If you answered face, then your name is obviously not Jonathan Lethem. Instead of taking the easy out, the genre-busting novelist concludes this by-the-numbers string of words with toothbrush in the mirror.
This brilliant sentence and a lot of other really excellent ones compose Lethem's engaging fifth novel, Motherless Brooklyn. Lionel Essrog, a detective suffering from Tourette's syndrome, spins the narrative as he tracks down the killer of his boss, Frank Minna. Minna enlisted Lionel and his friends when they were teenagers living at Saint Vincent's Home for Boys, ostensibly to perform odd jobs (we're talking very odd) and over the years trained them to become a team of investigators. The Minna men face their most daunting case when they find their mentor in a Dumpster bleeding from stab wounds delivered by an assailant whose identity he refuses to reveal--even while he's dying on the way to the hospital.
Detectives? Brooklyn? Is this the same Lethem who danced the postapocalypso in Amnesia Moon? Incredibly, yes, and rarely has such a departure been pulled off with this much aplomb. As in the "toothbrush" passage above, Lethem sets himself up with the imposing task of making tired conventions new. Brooklyn accents? Fuggetaboutit. Lethem's dialogue is as light on its feet as a prize fighter. Lionel's Tourette's could have been an easy joke, but Lethem probes so convincingly into the disorder that you feel simultaneously rattled, sympathetic, and irritated by the guy. Sure, the story is a mystery, but Motherless Brooklyn could be about flower arranging, for all we care. What counts is Lionel's tic-ridden take on a world full of surprises, propelling this fiction forward at edgy, breakneck speed. --Ryan Boudinot
Book Description
From America's most inventive novelist, Jonathan Lethem, comes this compelling and compulsive riff on the classic detective novel.
Lionel Essrog is Brooklyn's very own self-appointed Human Freakshow, an orphan whose Tourettic impulses drive him to bark, count, and rip apart our language in startling and original ways. Together with three veterans of the St. Vincent's Home for Boys, he works for small-time mobster Frank Minna's limo service cum detective agency. Life without Frank Minna, the charismatic King of Brooklyn, would be unimaginable, so who cares if the tasks he sets them are, well, not exactly legal. But when Frank is fatally stabbed, one of Lionel's colleagues lands in jail, the other two vie for his position, and the victim's widow skips town. Lionel's world is suddenly topsy-turvy, and this outcast who has trouble even conversing attempts to untangle the threads of the case while trying to keep the words straight in his head.
Motherless Brooklyn is a brilliantly original homage to the classic detective novel by one of the most acclaimed writers of his generation.
Customer Reviews:
"You a car service or a comedy team?".......2007-09-02
In "Motherless Brooklyn," Jonathan Lethem melds several genres, among them the bildungsroman, psychological novel, literary parody--all in the occasionally transparent framework of a detective story. The most famous aspect of the book is its hero's Tourette syndrome (the influence of Oliver Sacks's work is quite apparent), but the neurological condition itself takes on a life of its own, simultaneously moving and comic--and an opportunity for Lethem to indulge in some freakishly inventive wordplay that owes as much to James Joyce as to Mad magazine and the Artist Formerly Known as Prince.
The opening scene is on a par with the best of pulp fiction. Eating White Castle sliders daintily arrayed in a row of six (a compulsive aspect of his neurosis), Lionel Essrog stakes out an Upper East Side Zen studio with his associate Gilbert Coney, with the two of them standing guard as their boss Frank Minna is inside, wired for sound and exchanging cryptic arguments with some unknown heavy. It's at this point that everything goes wrong, and the ensuing chase scene through Queens and murder in Brooklyn provide one of the novel's highlights.
Lionel and Gilbert are just two of the four orphans hired (adopted, really) by Minna for a detective agency masquerading as a car service. (One of the recurrent gags is the group's supply of creative explanations to prospective customers for the lack of cars.) As a Minna Man, Lionel finds a father figure and a family where his Tourette's is not ignored but nevertheless accepted; Tony's pet name for him, "the free human freak show," serves more as a term of endearment than as a slur and indicates Minna's moderately disguised understanding that Lionel is the savviest of the bunch (Minna's estranged wife tells Lionel the reason Minna finds him useful is because everyone thought he was "stupid").
It's the interplay of the characters and Lionel's bumbling entry into adulthood that provide most of the novel's interest. As for the noir-inspired plot: there's hardly a cliche that Lethem doesn't send up--Italian mobsters and an evil corporation, the intrusively clueless police officer and a traitorous colleague, a sequence of red-herring clues and an offstage murder. ("Have you ever felt, in the course of reading a detective novel, a guilty thrill of having a character murdered before he can step onto the page and burden you with his actual existence? Detective stories have too many characters anyway.")
Yet the crime story itself never lives up the dizzying pursuit of the opening scene, and Lethem faces the difficulty of writing a parody of authors who themselves wrote masterful parodies (e.g., "The Thin Man," "The High Window"). Instead, the potboiler elements play shotgun both to Lethem's neurological-intellectual wordplay and to the emotional growth of his lead character. Lethem's novel has "too many characters anyway," and he resists the temptation to let the mystery gum up the works.
That's not necessarily a bad thing--unless you're expecting an old-fashioned whodunit or keystone caper. But Lethem's novel is less a whodunit than a howdunit--or, in this case, how the author does it: creating an affecting protagonist whose tongue twitches with the pulse of the cultural zeitgeist.
Loved Lionel...plot needs work........2007-09-01
Appreciated greatly the author's ability to put the reader in the mind of Lionel who had Tourette's Syndrome. Similarly his descriptions of the Brooklyn neighborhood came alive. I laughed and was saddened in several passages. This was easily a 5-rate. However, the plot was far-fetched as one waded toward the end of the book and not believable and this was disappointing and would lead me to not recommend this book.
Interesting.......2007-08-23
Lethem uses the English language in very unusual, and yet workable, ways. His unique take on the detective genre may yet inspire others.
Kinda disappointing..........2007-06-09
I really like Jonathan Lethem as an author. His books are usually quite interesting, clever, and humorous. Motherless Brooklyn disappointed me. The humor was not there, I seriously think Lethem tried to be funny but it simply failed. The characters were especially bland, and it was hard to become "attached" to Lionel the main character/narrarator. He spent too much time informing us that Lionel has Tourette's Syndrome, not enough time developing the story. The Tourette's was seriously (as someone previously stated in their review) the crutch that this book propped itself up on. Had it spent more time on the story, the book would have earned at least 4 stars because the story was interesting when time was spent explaining it. Gun, With Occassional Music is a much better detective story in my opinion. After a while, while I enjoyed parts of the book, I found myself reading it so that I could finish it. Lyrical, Thoughtful, One-of-a-Kind.......2007-06-07
Nothing about this book should be compared, I believe, to any standard genre fiction. The only standard is clear, compelling writing with believable characters and honest events. So rich is Lionel's world, and he is such a keen observer, that the experience is lifted to a feeling of depth like few other pieces of modern-day writing. The plot is really about self-discovery, about stepping outside your comfort zone, and about finding a home. So many wonderful, touching scenes side-by-side with compelling tension and a terrific, underlying drive to the plot.
