Dr. Segal gives descriptions of several types of difficult people and some strategies on how to deal with them.

The book was a little superficial in some parts because it did not give enough or clearer information. Dr. Segal could've gotten into more detail on how to handle difficult people.

Overall the book did not rock my world but it did give some good info.

A most effective tool book.......2002-01-26

This book is my "tool book" and mental support on a daily ba sis. The author analyzes and categories difficult people, but does not bore you with psychology details. You won't go through pages of personaly differences. You get effective and useful tips that you can use in many situations. You become calmer and less bothered by difficult people because you know their types, their behavior, and what you can do.

I have read this book 3 - 4 times now. Every time I found something new. You can use it as a reference book - looking up the types you have to deal with, and finding the skills you need.
It's also written in a fun-to-read kind of way, but with simple and clear messages...

Absolutely a best tool book!!

Getting Them To See It Your Way: Dealing With Difficult and.......2001-05-15

After looking over several books on this topic, I have found Judith Segal's book to be the most accessible in its approach. Without over-analyzing, the author stakes out the "territory", loosely categorizing difficult and challenging people into type pools. With humor and believeable anecdotes, Segal deftly offers the reader ways to see a problematic relationship and the skills to handle it. I have definitely seen the benefits of applying some of the techniques outlined in this book. Originally, I took this book out of the library, but I intend to purchase it for my personal library. It is a valuable source of reference.

This is the second of six volumes collecting significant papers of the distinguished astrophysicist and Nobel laureate S. Chandrasekhar. This is the first book to attempt a full account of NASA's August 1996 announcement that an ancient Martian meteorite discovered in Antarctica may contain evidence of extraterrestrial life. Goldsmith treads carefully, knowing full well that this purported finding could become the cold fusion phenomenon of the 1990s--bogus science that misleads the public. The book shows several signs of its hasty composition, but such is the price of beating the competition to market. Mars fans may also want to examine The Case for Mars by Robert Zubrin and Are We Alone? by Paul Davies.

I found it to being quite a good study on our current knowledge of the possibility of life on Mars.

The writer uses a court case allegory to discuss 'ALH84001' the Marian rock found by NASA to review the case.

Slightly dated but fair overview of topic.......2002-02-02

This is a good overview of the possibility of life on Mars, using the evidence found in the meteorite ALH84001 as a starting point. Goldsmith uses a legal trial as a somewhat overprecious analogy, but overall this book is a fair and detailed summary of the arguments both for and against life on Mars based on current evidence.

It also covers future missions to Mars and somewhat dates itself while doing so, since Pathfinder and Global Surveyor are presented in the future tense.

Still, this is a useful and interesting book.

Complete and objective.......2001-10-30

A pretty good book, that clearly explains, one by one, all the evidence brought forward by the NASA team about the ALH84001 Martian meteorite. Totally objective, very precise, easy to read, it will definitly help you understand what it's all about.

Only in the end does the author expresses his personnal view on the subject, but at least, you are then able to judge by yourself.

This is the kind of book Benjamin Bratt (from the movie "Red Planet") should have read before saying "How do you know it's authentic? How do you know its not toxic, that's the bigger question.".

READ! And learn, before you say anything stupid...

What STAR WARS should have been about..............1998-05-12

I thoroughly enjoyed Donald Goldmith's book. His easy, flowing style made for comprehension and reflective thinking on my part on this very interesting subject. One of the things that was made so clear that I was very much unaware of in the scientific community is the unreasonableness of some people. It seems downright silly they expose their fears so readily. I don't know why I am surprised though because scientist are just a smaller microcosm of the world and so there you have it. The jury is still out for me on whether or not I believe but I'll tell you this.... the book did edge me over to the side of the believers though in that now I would say 60% maybe and 40% maybe not and before I was split down the middle. To let you know how well written this book is.... I gave it to my boyfriend who has the attention span of a gnat and he got through it and could discuss it. Need I say more?

Mars Needs Women (and Men)!.......1997-03-07

This book, along with Zubrin's "The Case for Mars," makes an excellent bookend to a spate of recent fiction and non-fiction about the exploration and colonization of Mars. Recommended reading and timely with the announcment of possible microfossils found in a Martian meteorite. As regards the so called "artifacts" of Cydonia, the author obviously realizes that light, shadow and wind-sculpted mesas have fooled a lot of wishful New Agers into believing pyramids and giant faces have been carved on the Red Planet. The quaint notion of intelligent features on Mars died out with Percivall Lowell's Martians and their "canals.&quot

Its good. I dont really care for the way it was written in a little girl's point of view. That, I can't relate to. I think it was a nice story though...

The Best Little Girl in the World.......2007-05-12

Both my teenage daughter and I read this book. It gave us both a great insight into how one small comment can change a persons perception of their self. The book was a eye-opener for me because I was not aware of the impact comments about a persons body shape can have on them. A persons mind can have a very strong hold over their body and this book goes into detail of this effect. It also shows that these girls are not the only one's to be in this situation and that there is help available, albeit via hospitalisation and counselling. I am amazed that this book was first published so many years ago, when anoxeria nervosa seems to be a relatively recent 'disease'.

Fine..........If you're shallow.......2007-02-25

I'm a nineth grader in a small town and am being told to read this book for my English class. My teacher spent valuable budget money on a class set of this junk and I'm severely appalled.

First thing first, this book is hardly appropriate for a guy to read and is not school suitable, either. It also contains a good deal of profain language.

It appears to have the capability of reverse physcology and is definately dangerous. If you're shallow enough to just take it with a grain of salt and only read enough to write the report....it's great, but if you read into it......it's just strange. It almost encourages anorexia nervosa. Definately plenty of stereotyping as well.

Good punctuation, though....kudos to the editor.

Verdict: Not Suitable for Teenage Girls, Guys of any Age, High School Students, and of-their-rocker English teachers.

Entertaining but Dangerous.......2007-02-15

While this book is entertaining and even "informative", it is dangerous. Over the years I know that much blame has been put on this book and even on the author, however, I think that it is the "informative" nature that makes it so dangerous. I remember reading it for the first time (at age 11) and while I don't remember a clear "wow, anorexia is cool" thought going through my mind - it definitely opened a door. Being a (naturally thin) gymnast and model, I think the book gave me ideas I wouldn't have had yet. Do I blame the book? Not entirely. Would I let my daughter read it? Definitely not. Choosing to starve myself to be thin has had repercussions that will last the rest of my life - I will always regret reading that book and making that choice.

Easy Solution.......2007-02-02

Fifteen-year-old Kessa has always been the trouble-free child in her family. Her older brother Gregg is now a student at Harvard, but he isn't someone who can be depended on for anything. He doesn't want to get involved in anyone else's problems. Kessa's sister Susanna has always been the bad one, most recently running away to live in a commune in California. Kessa has always been in the background, and she hates it. Dancing is the only thing that matters to her.

One day Kessa's dance teacher tells her that she has real talent but could stand to lose a few pounds if she is serious about dancing. This comment is the catalyst for Kessa. She begins to spend every day obsessing about food. She creates rituals she performs while eating, such as cutting her food into tiny pieces, organizing them into sections and only eating a certain number of sections. Food becomes the one thing she can control, and soon she has lost twenty pounds from a body that really can't compensate for that loss.

Sandy Sherman is a psychiatrist who has seen several anorexic patients. He takes on Kessa's case and immediately sees that she is the sickest of his patients. He thinks he will be able to help her. The question is whether he'll be in time to save her from starving herself to death.

I liked the insight into how the mind of an anorexic might work. It always seemed baffling to me that someone would stop eating, but this book explained some of the psychology of the disease. I believe it made recovery from anorexia seem too easy, though. Many people struggle with eating disorders for a lifetime, and I don't think it's realistic to think Kessa would be okay in a relatively short period of time, considering how sick she was.
