Counseling the Culturally Diverse: Theory and Practice
-
Human Development (9th Edition)
ASIN: 0534340377 |
Book Description
In this breakthrough book, three leaders in the field draw on their years of experience to formulate the first ever "multicultural counseling theory." After the authors' presentation of their theory, experts in specific areas of the field present their views on the proposed theory and comment on how it applies to their particular areas of expertise. Preceding each contributed essay, the authors provide continuity to the text by conducting an "assumption audit" of the key points and ideas inherent in each respondent's chapter. They then integrate these assumptions in a final chapter addressing the future of multicultural theory development.
Customer Reviews:
The Most Promising CounselingTheory in Decades.......2000-06-27
As the profession of counseling moves forward, there is a growing need for theories to respond to the developing needs of our clientele. "A Theory of Multicultural Counseling and Therapy" (MCT) provides an excellent template for this process to begin. MCT is designed in such a way that it provides practitioners and practitioners-in-training the logical accumulation of years of research on counseling in a diverse society. This text moves counselors away from seeing people of differing cultures in a stereotypical manner toward a more theoretically integrative way of conceptualizing clients. The "common factors" approach used throughout the text focuses on shared characteristics from different schools of counseling and psychotherapy. MCT has arrived as the birth of a forward-looking counseling metatheory both responsive to past data as well as calling for research to challenge and modify it in the future. I strongly feel that all practicing psychologists and counselors should read MCT and that it should be included in the coursework of every trainee. Multicultural practice should no longer be considered a specialty, but instead should be seen as currently normative and the future of our field.

Book Description
We might think of them as living on the very edge of existence. Referred to as extremophiles, these microorganisms exhibit the most radical capacity for adaptation in those harsh environments that are just barely conducive to the existence of cellular life. Unlocking the mechanisms and understanding the evolutionary development that allows these simple organisms to thrive can teach us much about microbiology in extremis. Highly diverse, these microorganisms are found nearly everywhere. One example, thermophiles are microorganisms that thrive at temperatures above the mesophilic range of 25-400C. Until recently, due to their extreme environment, the study of thermophiles was limited. However with the advent of new tools, particularly genetic analysis, remarkable strides have been made. Thermophiles: Biology and Technology at High Temperatures presents a cogent summary of the progress made in studying these extremophiles. Discover how thermophiles demonstrate extremes that indicate a lack of evolutionary constraints Much is being learned from the study of thermophiles, especially our understanding of biology at the molecular level and the genetic mechanisms that permit adaptation. Included in this volume is a discussion of protective strategies of thermophiles, including their thermostability, which allow them to maintain functional proteins. It also investigates whether hyperthermophiles employ protein phosphorylation-dephosphryation as a molecular regulatory mechanism, and provides significant clues regarding the synthesis of protein. By studying this extreme example, its subtle, yet exaggerated response mechanisms, and its development over the course of many short-lived generations, we may begin to understand the mechanisms in diseases linked to improper protein folding, and also begin to more fully understand the ingenious design of DNA, and all that such an understanding implies regarding the survival of human life in a rapidly changing environment.

Customer Reviews:
Has you guessing until the very end.......2007-09-17
First book in her new knitting series. Ariadne enters her knitting shop one morning to find the body of Edith Perry strangled behind the front counter. Ari knows that she should be more alarmed, but that's what you get for being the nasty person that Edith was. Unfortunately, there are too many suspects two of which are Diane and her husband Joe both of whom are close friends of Ari's. Enter Josh Pierce the new and quite cute police detective and you have an interesting who done it. Kruger does a great Christie-like job in throwing out numerous suspects and reasons only to have you say "oh, I should have known".
Knitting can be murder...........2007-06-29
You don't have to be a knitter to enjoy this first book in this new knitting series, but it helps. Ariadne (Ari) is a young divorced single mom who owns a yarn shop in Freeport, Mass. One morning she enters her shop and finds the dead body of Edith, the town's universally disliked woman in the yarn store. For various reasons, Ariadne becomes the prime suspect and her livelihood is threatened, so she sets out to clear her name and find the murderer. Right away we meet several possible suspects and some red herrings who are thrown into the murder mix, and there is even a touch of romance in the air between Ari and the chief investigating officer before the mystery is solved.
However, before Ari solves the murder you get to meet her best friend Diane, who spins her own yarns from her own sheep, her eccentric aunt Laura, her ever present ex husband Ted, her adorable daughter Megan, her mom, Eileen, and several other town characters.
As the story progresses, free knitting patterns on the internet play an important part in the plot as does the new store web site being constructed by her assistant, and a nice touch is the beautiful yarn in Ari's shop which is beautifully and tantilizingly described throughout the story. If you're a knitter, you'll surely appreciate this touch and if you're not, it's not intrusive enough to ruin the story and detract from the plot. For the most part this is a great beginning to a fun cozy series with few weaknesses and many strengths. The descriptions of the small town, the shop, and the town people are charming and well done and there are some easy patterns at the end of the book. All in all a great first effort.
Easy reading.......2007-01-22
A good mystery whether you are a knitter or not, but add's a nice touch
to those of us who have knit a scarf or two.
get caught up in Ariadne's web..........2006-07-10
WOW! Buy this now!! The only other novel I've read with such intensity that I finished in two days (I'm a slow reader) was Harry Potter #6.
A late-20's divorced single mom (with an adorable kid-and coming from me, that's saying something) finds a dead body of a universally disliked woman in the yarn store she-our heroine, owns. She's the prime suspect and her livelihood is threatened, so she sets out to clear her name and find the real culrpit. There's a tingle of romance in the air between herself and the chief investigating officer (which disappintingly doesn't blossom further BUT that's actually good because #a. it makes the story that much more believable-i.e. no pat Disneyfied ending, and #b. tantalizes the reader into wanting the sequels-nice.)
Now, you know our Ari is going to solve it, but get this; it's totally plausible (much more so than Maggie Sefton's knit books) all of it rings completely true and natural.
Knitting is lovingly mentioned in sprinkles here and there, though not with as much detail as in Maggie's 'Knit one, Kill Two' BUT if you're a knitter, you already know what the rucous is about and if you're not-dude, what are you waiting for?
There's some product placement (remember Minority Report?) which is actually good-it all adds to the realness of it all, and it's written in a lazy daisy meandering style (with heart-racing moments near the end) which fits in perfectly with it's small town setting.
It's very of the times with all the internet refernces; the characters are nicely drawn-you'll like some, you'll loathe some and you'll adore Aunt Laura (I want one!!) and the quest to find out who did it will drive you to read the thing in one sitting (bring snacks). The 's' word is used-but only a couple times.
This is just fab! There are even patterns in the back-for padded coat hangers and 2 fake fur scarves but I like Maggie's patterns better; an Icelandic sweater pattern would've been a much more suitable inclusion here. Also, this could just be me, but I don't get the cover illustration...
But never mind that-DO get this-and not just for knitters, but for anyone who appreciates a good muder-mystery yarn. So curl up in your favorite reading nook and...
Fantastic knitting mystery.......2006-07-08
I just finished this book and it was absolutely wonderful. In fact, I had to MAKE myself put the book down to get my housework finished. It kept me glued to the book and the plot was wonderful. Enough knitting and yarn to keep me interested but a wonderful mystery that even I didn't solve until I read the ending. The only thing I didn't like was the size of the book...it was hard to hold...wish it would have been a little bit smaller book for my hands. You'll love it. Can't wait to read more by this author. You'll love it.
