Book Description
With increasing numbers of non-English-speaking Hispanics entering the national work force and making positive contributions in business and industry, it's important for personnel managers to know a few fundamentals of spoken Spanish, plus Spanish phrases to cover the specialized vocabulary used in personnel offices. Such ability enables them to interview prospective employees, make sensible hiring decisions, help applicants fill out forms, and explain job duties and employee benefits. William Harvey offers basic Spanish instruction that avoids the drudgery of formal grammar training, but gives personnel managers and job supervisors enough of the language to communicate effectively. Helpful dialogues are presented that simulate bilingual interviewing and job instruction, and all needed words and phrases are accompanied by easy-to-read pronunciation aids to speed the learning process. The book also features a bilingual glossary and a study review section.
Customer Reviews:
Just glance at the excerpt and you'll find gross errors..........2005-02-18
For instance, on page 8 it gives "al principio" = "at first" (which is OK depending on context), but then in the very next page it uses the phrase in this sentence: "Al principio, venga al trabajo" ("venga al trabajo" = "come to work").
This makes as little sense in English as it does in Spanish. If you tell an employee, "At first, come to work," the obvious implication is that later he doesn't have to, and it's just as silly in Spanish. At least it gave me much needed comic relief.
That is not the only error in the brief excerpt given. Makes me wonder if anyone actually looked at this thing before sending it to the printer, and it surprises me coming from Barron's -- they've always had a reputation for putting out top-notch materials.
I'll have to take a closer look at their other books before I continue recommending them as wholeheartedly as I did in the past.
It gets 3 stars because all I've seen is the excerpt given here, so I've no idea just how bad the rest of it is. Judging from what I saw, and what I read in a couple of other reviews that brought out some errors, I do agree that you have to be VERY careful about relying too much on this book.
This book has a lot of flaws.......2003-04-22
The intent of this book is commendable as its goal is to provide a quick hands on Spanish vocabulary reference that's specific to Human Resources terminology and related vocabulary however there are some serious translation errors not be taken lightly. At first glance this book seems great but as you go through it page by page the errors become evident.
Terminology in a language must be correct and I am surprised at this production by Barron's because they usually do have good educational material even in a foreign language but this one has some really bad translations which a learner of Spanish and even natives have to be aware of since English has great influence in the spoken and written Spanish on the US and Canada.
Some of the many errors include:
1) Contact persona= "la persona de contacto". This is such a literal translation and as a result is incorrect. Sometimes the long phrases are the only equivalents. It s/b "la persona con quien puede hablar"
2) Think about it= Piense en eso. More correctly in Spanish it s/b "Piensalo"
3) How long ago= Hace cuanto. It s/b "Hace cuanto tiempo"
4) Take a seat= Tome un asiento. It s/b "Tome asiento"
5) Mutual Funds= los fondos mutualisitas. Please do not repeat this one. It s/b "fondos mutuales" or "fondos de inversion"
6) Sunglasses= gafas del sol. This is a big grammatical error. It s/b "gafas de sol".
These are just a few examples but the list goes on. The editors of this book should have caught these errors because they could really jeopardize the quality of your Spanish. Even the basic command structure is incorrect. In the book "vamos a... is translated as "let's". That is incorrect. Vamos a = we are going to...." Let's" is a command and requires a special verb form. For example let's work= trabajemos. It cannot be translated as "vamos a trabajar".
All I can say in a nutshell is proceed with caution. The same way this book may help you it may very well embarrass you.
Perfecto.......2000-11-18
As manager of a small business, I recently needed to communicate at length with a new Spanish speaking employee. This book made it possible! I strongly recommend that EVERY English speaking professional in management invest in this outstanding book-audiocassette package. It has been a life-saver!
The Best Out There.......2000-03-22
Finally someone has gotten it right! Every time I use this guidebook in Human Resources, I get my message across en espanol! It's perfect for anyone who needs the appropriate words or phrases to interview, train, or counsel Spanish speaking employees. And the business vocabulary is excellent. No other book out there has better translations for the words, phrases, commands, and questions that you'll need. A true MUST-BUY for anyone in management!
Grammatical errors and mistranslations.......1999-01-18
This otherwise useful book is marred by a number of grammatical errors and mistranslations. For example, on p. 281, "Wait for the tone" is translated as "Espere por el tono." It should be "espere el tono"--the translation in the book means "wait on behalf of the tone." Tax return is translated as "reembolso impositivo," which actually means "tax refund." "Workers' compensation" is translated as "compensación de obreros," but it is actually called "indemnización por accidentes de trabajo" in Spanish. "Sexual harassment" in Spanish is either "acoso sexual" or "hostigamiento sexual," but not "acosamiento sexual" as indicated in the book. "Final decision" should be "decisión definitiva," not "decisión final," which means "last decision." "Listen for the alarm" is translated as "escuche por la alarma," which means "listen on behalf of the alarm." The bottom line: be VERY careful with this book.

Using the 8 vital supplements........2000-09-01
The weakest part of the book is the mixed units given on page 74 for the supplements. These range from tablespoons through milligrams to international units. How are all these related? What are the equivalents? In particular the doses for Iodine, Iron and Sulfur on page 50 do not make sense in the UK. Pharmasists can supply Iron Sulphate but Iodene and Sulfur are not available. This rather spoils an otherwise excellent book.
life saving.......1999-12-30
I cannot say how much the content of this book has changed our lives. The diet is simple and very nutritious, but what are amazing are the statistics, the lives it has improved and/or saved. Amongst those this diet has saved, is my father who religiously has followed it and blesses Dr. Moerman. A definite recommendation not just to those with the monster disease, but to all who would like to improve their chances of not getting it.
A very effective diet and simple to follow........1998-04-02
This book does a very good job of providing anyone with cancer a highly effective, but very simple diet to build the immune system and effectively fight the disease. Dr. Moerman has over 60 years of results with animals and humans with this diet. In addition to the easy to follow diet, his recommendations on nutritional supplements are concise, simple, and again based on years of research and hundreds of patients. I highly recommend this diet for people who are sick as well as those who just want to stay healthy. Dr. Brian Bussanich

Wonderland and the Hubble Space Telescope.......1999-07-09
This book is a wonderful introduction to some of the controversies in astrophysics extant at the time of the Hubble launch. It is highly technical, but the general sense can be derived from the text, which is extremely funny. The author skillfully adapts the scientific controversies to the Adventures of Alice in Wonderland. I read this book aloud to my son when he was around 8 years old. Subsequently, he has re-read this book at least three times. ( I suspect that if one were in the field of astrophysics, which I am not, much would now seem quite dated.)

Book Description
How does nature manage to produce reactions from difficult substrates? How are stable molecules involved in low-temperature, low-pressure chemical reactions? How can a chemist stop a chemical reaction short of oxidation? Adopting the premise that there is a chemical analog for any naturally occurring enzymatic process, a renowned chemist answers these and other challenging questions in Metal Complexes in Biomimetic Chemical Reactions. This book explains chemical analogs as they apply to their biological counterparts. This volume covers basic chemical reactions found in nature, including: molecular nitrogen reduction in solution; selective hydrocarbon oxidation (including methane); and photodecomposition of water. Numerous drawings, equations, and structures enhance the text.

Description:
Although selected heavy metals (HMs) stimulate biological reactions at low concentrations, all HMs are toxic to microorganisms (MOs) at moderate concentrations and can cause inhibitory effects on the biological processes. Therefore, MOs must be acclimated to HMs or other toxic substances present in wastewaters (WWs) before they are used in an activated sludge process (ASP). In this study, combined effect of Cu^2^+ and Zn^2^+ ions in a synthetic WW on the efficiency of a laboratory-scale ASP without recycle was investigated using acclimated MOs at different extents.A synthetic feed solution of 1222mgL^-^1 proteose-peptone (corresponding to 1300mgCODL^-^1) served as a source of carbon. Cu^2^+ and Zn^2^+ ions at different concentrations (1.5, 4.5 and 9, 27mgL^-^1, respectively) were introduced in the feed to a continuously stirred activated sludge reactor at different hydraulic residence times (2-40h) keeping pH, temperature and stock feed composition constant. The combined effects of copper and zinc ions were determined by mixing these metallic ions at the specified combinations of concentrations such as ''1.5mgL^-^1 of Cu^2^++9mgL^-^1 of Zn^2^+'' and ''4.5mgL^-^1 of Cu^2^++27mgL^-^1 of Zn^2^+''. It was observed that using seed MOs acclimatized to two times of the combined threshold concentration of these HMs for an unduly long period of time (1-4 months) caused adverse effects on the ASP performance. Besides, it was found that usual inhibition effects of these HMs were enhanced with increasing period of acclimation. Substantially lower substrate removal efficiencies were obtained with acclimatized MOs than those obtained with non-acclimatized MOs. At the higher initial substrate concentration of 2500mgCODL^-^1, substrate-inhibition occurred causing a decrease in the specific growth rate constant (k); however, HM inhibition was suppressed, resulting to about 20% increase in treatment efficiency of the ASP. It can be concluded that the time period necessary for acclimatization of seed MOs must be adjusted carefully with concentrations of HMs lower than their threshold concentrations to achieve an optimal operation of an aerobic biological process.

Description:
Chromium has been widely used in various industries. Hexavalent chromium (Cr^6^+) is a priority toxic, mutagenic and carcinogenic chemical, whereas its reduced trivalent form (Cr^3^+) is much less toxic and insoluble. Hence, the basic process for chromium detoxification is the transformation of Cr^6^+ to Cr^3^+. A number of aerobic and anaerobic microorganisms are capable of reducing Cr^6^+. In the presence of oxygen, microbial reduction of Cr^6^+ is commonly catalyzed by soluble enzymes, except in Pseudomonas maltophilia O-2 and Bacillus megaterium TKW3, which utilize membrane-associated reductases. Recently, two soluble Cr^6^+ reductases, ChrR and YieF, have been purified from Pseudomonas putida MK1 and Escherichia coli, respectively. ChrR catalyzes an initially one-electron shuttle followed by a two-electron transfer to Cr^6^+, with the formation of intermediate(s) Cr^5^+ and/or Cr^4^+ before further reduction to Cr^3^+. YieF displays a four-electron transfer that reduces Cr^6^+ directly to Cr^3^+. The membrane-associated Cr^6^+ reductase of B. megaterium TKW3 was isolated, but its reduction kinetics is as yet uncharacterized. Under anaerobic conditions, both soluble and membrane-associated enzymes of the electron transfer system were reported to mediate Cr^6^+ reduction as a fortuitous process coupled to the oxidation of an electron donor substrate. In this process, Cr^6^+ serves as the terminal electron acceptor of an electron transfer chain that frequently involves cytochromes (e.g., b and c). An expanding array of Cr^6^+ reductases allows the selection of enzymes with higher reductive activity, which genetic and/or protein engineering may further enhance their efficiencies. With the advancement in technology for enzyme immobilization, it is speculated that the direct application of Cr^6^+ reductases may be a promising approach for bioremediation of Cr^6^+ in a wide range of environments.

Description:
The abundance of metal-tolerant populations among culturable bacterial communities in arable soils of different texture and barren spoil of a former silver mine was determined. In addition, bacterial isolates were identified by MIDI-FAME profiling of total-cell fatty acids and plasmid-encoded tolerance to selected heavy metals, as well as the metal-tolerance patterns of the plasmid-containing isolates were ascertained. The difference in the bacterial numbers between the sandy-loam and clay soils was found, which was associated with the effect of higher concentrations of heavy metals, both total and soluble fractions, in the clay soil. The high proportions of metal-tolerant populations in both soils and the spoil were ascertained. In both soils, the bacterial isolates were mostly represented by Gram-negatives, and Variovorax paradoxus dominated in the spoil. Several isolates contained plasmids of the same size, however, only the tolerance to Zn and Cd appeared to be associated with the plasmids, as showed by the transformation data. Minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) data indicated that the plasmid-containing isolates developed tolerance to several metals tested. Such isolates as Methylobacterium mesopilicum and Flavobacterium from the sandy-loam soil, Pseudomonas gladioli from the clay soil and V. paradoxus from the spoil could be of great interest because of their high tolerance to Zn, Cu, Cd, or Ag, respectively.

Book Description

When a woman named Faye Travers is called upon to appraise the estate of a family in her small New Hampshire town, she isn't surprised to discover a forgotten cache of valuable Native American artifacts. After all, the family descends from an Indian agent who worked on the North Dakota Ojibwe reservation that is home to her mother's family. However, she stops dead in her tracks when she finds in the collection a rare drum -- a powerful yet delicate object, made from a massive moose skin stretched across a hollow of cedar, ornamented with symbols she doesn't recognize and dressed in red tassels and a beaded belt and skirt -- especially since, without touching the instrument, she hears it sound.
From Faye's discovery, we trace the drum's passage both backward and forward in time, from the reservation on the northern plains to New Hampshire and back. Through the voice of Bernard Shaawano, an Ojibwe, we hear how his grandfather fashioned the drum after years of mourning his young daughter's death, and how it changes the lives of those whose paths its crosses. And through Faye we hear of her anguished relationship with a local sculptor, who himself mourns the loss of a daughter, and of the life she has made alone with her mother, in the shadow of the death of Faye's sister.
Through these compelling voices,
The Painted Drum explores the strange power that lost children exert on the memories of those they leave behind, and as the novel unfolds, its elegantly crafted narrative comes to embody the intricate, transformative rhythms of human grief. One finds throughout the grace and wit, the captivating prose and surprising beauty, that characterize
Louise Erdrich's finest work.

Customer Reviews:
One of the best Erdrich novels.......2007-08-25
After reading many of Louise Erdrich's novels, I had become tired of their similarities -- until, that is, I decided to give The Painted Drum a chance. Erdrich's novel recaptures the originality of her earlier work and improves it with the maturity of a veteran novelist, succeeding with her multiple narratives as she never has before.
The author has been quoted as describing her writing style as a patchwork quilt, piecing scraps of stories together until they form a beautiful whole. In The Painted Drum, these scraps consist of two major plots: the present day story of Faye, a contemporary woman living with a sense of loss, and the history of a painted drum Faye acquires. The novel's structure is not as simple, however, as this division suggests, as individual stories abound. The throbbing resonance of the drum takes on haunting meaning as its history, traced back to its creation, is revealed. Although the lineage of the drum defines the novel's scope, the stories that surround it veer off in tangents.
Although the Ojibwe history and cast of characters (including the familiar Fleur Pillager) give this novel a complexity that goes beyond what Erdrich has accomplished in recent books, Faye's story steers the work in a new direction, one that gives the ancient spirituality of Native Americans an urgency in contemporary America. The connections between mothers and daughters, between the dead and the living, and among survivors lend this novel poignancy and hope, even if the hope seems less solid that the grief itself.
I highly recommend this novel, especially to fans of Love Medicine and The Beet Queen.
I Enjoyed This Audiobook Very Much!.......2007-07-01
I was drawn to this book because I have read Louse Edrich's books before and I enjoyed her treatment of American Indian history and lore. I do not know a lot about it myself, but I assume she researches these things quite a bit before she writes about them. It would be interesting to go back and check some of her historical background and presentations to see if they are accurate.
Loiuise Edrich's book, the Painted Drum is a story about a mother and daughter team of estate appraisers who find a treasure of a painted American Indian drum in someone's attic. The story is developed at first as part of the lives of the mother and daughter. The daughter has stolen the drum for a reason that she doesn't quite understand herself! Later on, the drum is returned to its rightful owners and we learn of its story as Bernard, the grandson of its creator tells it. The story of the drum kept me interested as it wove through the generations and told of the life and hardships of the drum's maker. It made the drum's creator seem like a real person to me, not just a person from a book.
As an audiobook, this is really special. That is because Anna Fields is really gifted in the way she uses her voice to depict the characters. Even when she does the voices of men, she does so very convincingly. I haven't heard an authentic American Indian accent, but I imagined hers were close to the real thing and I could almost see the characters in my mind.
I would really reccommend this book. I would especially reccomend it to someone who is interested in American Indian history and lore.
Pass on Erdrich's latest.......2007-05-17
I've got one word to sum up this book - yawn. I've been a fan of many of Erdrich's earlier novels, such as The Bingo Palace, and Love Medicine. Erdrich has made a name for herself as a writer who vividly portrays the balancing act of Native Americans in a westernized world. Sadly, The Painted Drum doesn't live up to her earlier writing, and is beyond boring. Erdrich seems to be following in the vein of movies these days, that is to say forgetting to include a plot. The book begins as a dull and detailed description of sifting through the junk in someone's attic, which is about as interesting as watching paint dry in someone's attic. I was so bored I couldn't even finish listening to the book. Do yourself a favor, and pass on The Painted Drum.
erdrich rocks!.......2007-01-30
as with all of her novels, louise erdrich weaves an unusual and original story about an ordinary object; in this case, a drum. she uses odd but real characters, diverse landscapes and geographical locations, and beautiful language to entertain us to the last page.
Engrossing.......2006-10-24
What I really appreciate about this book (as well as all Louise Erdrich's work) is the different cultural perspective on events, the difference in interpretation of those events, which I assume are Native American.
I couldn't put the book down - that is, when I wasn't listening to it on CD during commutes to work.
