It is evident from your investigation of this title that you are curious about the universe and human understanding. I have personally endured all of the confusion that results from reading the other books on cosmology and philosophy. This one is different. Prof. Munitz is a consumate teacher. He is clear and is not concerned to show how smart he is (although no one I know of is smarter). If you want to make sense of the universe and understand how humans are situated in it, then this is the only place to start. If you are a professional cosmologist who has spent a lifetime immersed in the details of astronomy, then this book will expand your horizons and satisfy a deep need that cannot be met elsewhere.

This book is very well written and definitely helps the reader understand complex ideas in a simple way. Easy to follow, and well illustrated...especially if you prefer pictures to words. I first stumbled across this book researching paleontologists, and I'm glad I found it. It showed me some of the history on a field of science I have loved since I was very young. I found it to be enjoyable reading. It was neither a compilement of dry facts nor oversimplified mush, but informative and interesting. Worthwhile to read.

I completely disagree with Chad, I understand where you are coming from but I think you completely missed the point. I like this book because it tells you to move forward, to focus on what you are doing today because if you live today to the fullest then tomorrow when you look at your past you'll have no regrets. It says to enjoy the things that you have today rather than to ponder on the things that you do not have or may have had in the past. It also says not to live in the future because the future is not here yet, this should not be taken as a call to living on a whim but rather to live your today and take care of all that you need to today because that will make your tomorrow. Give it another try Chad, the person that spent 18.00 on it really cares about you.

Learn about the here and now.......2006-08-29

As a parent, I read this book to my children from grade school through high school. The Precious Present and Hope for the Flowers by Trina Paulus ranked highest in my rituals of reading what I thoght was important. The Precious Present states simply that which many seem to lose sight of in the midst of a time which is wrought with demands and distractions. As a consultant, I read or referenced this book to clients to aid them in understanding the importance of being where they are at instead of worrying about the future or regretting the past. The book was always received well. Albeit the range could be wide - from just stopping to ponder the idea to big aha's of getting how powerful the here and now can be and therefore making whatever the best decision with the resources available. It's all we have, this present moment.

Does an excellent job of organizing and establishing time lines for photos. Very glad to find a copy.

Information Vague and Contradictory.......2004-05-02

Taylor may give readers a good place to start in their efforts to preserve family photographs, but offers information that is both contradictory and vague.

She gives a basic explanation of the "enemies" your photographs are facing, even breaking down information on particular types of photographs, tintypes, Polaroids, etc. But does not bother defining some basic terms in the glossary such as lignin. Nor are many of her suggestions for which supplies are appropriate specific enough. Eg., what kind of brush should I use to clean photos? I know that Nylon brushes are probably not soft enough for treasured photos. Even worse she says polyethylene is a bad material to store your photos in, but a few pages later suggests using polyethylene freezer bags for freezer storage of items.

Taylor includes lengthy lists of resources for, and more information on preservation. But some of the web addresses she lists no longer exist.

While she has some good suggestions for long-term storage of photo collections, I would not recommend this book to anyone trying to learn about photographic preservation.

Excellent for do-it-yourself photo preservation.......2002-07-23

For me, studying old photos is one of the more fascinating aspects of family research, even when I'm not related to any of the people whose faces appear. The military uniforms, hats, parlor furniture, automobiles, urban scenes, and especially the faces and their expressions, are like a kind of time travel, allowing you to peer back into someone's past. Taylor's previous book, _Uncovering Your Ancestry Through Family Photographs,_ investigated that process. But how to protect the photos you already have tucked away in albums have so future family members will get the same pleasure (and information) from them? And how to rehabilitate those you discover to whom the years and the elements have not been kind? This time, the author outlines the steps you can take to see that your photographs have the best chance of survival and describes the methods conservators and restoration experts follow when the task becomes too much for you. She also guides you through the process of creating a meaningful scrapbook of archival quality, discusses the use of computer enhancement and electronic archives, and points out the legal aspects of posting photographs on a web site. Most of the chapters end with checklists and answers to frequently-asked questions, and there are many sidebars and brief marginal comments regarding further reading and useful Internet resources on the subject. Keeping in mind that the technical aspects of photographic restoration and preservation continue to evolve rapidly, this is an excellent beginner's guide and reference handbook.
