A Singular Collaboration and Contribution.......2001-03-31

Each of the three words in the title is more important now than at any prior time in business history. It is far easier to achieve success than to sustain it. Given the increasingly greater impact of the Web, the necessity of connectivity and interactivity rapidly increases. Finally, mastery of what Senge calls "the fifth discipline" of organization-wide learning may well determine whether or not excellence can be sustained in the face of constant, at times traumatic change.

In the Preface, Berge shares what he refers to as "some patterns and commonalities" which he has noted over the years while reviewing hundreds of cases involving distance training and educational technology. He has assembled and edited a collection 20 brilliant essays which are distributed within five Parts: Introduction, Meeting the Challenge of Uncommon Organizational Change, Setting Competitive Standards, Achieving organizational Goals, and Summary. He then provides an Appendix (Case Study Research Methodology Used for This Book, Glossary, and References. In the Preface, Berge explains that the purpose of this book is to "disseminate a plausible model or framework for sustaining distance training and to describe the essential elements in the model with multiple cases to illustrate and help the reader's understanding." His primary audience consists of organizational managers, performance consulting professionals, and practitioners charged with the training functions in corporations, nonprofit organizations, and government agencies.

Berge is the author of the first two essays which comprise Part One: "The Context of Distance Training: Predicting Change" and "A Framework for Sustaining Distance Training." Berge does indeed offer a "model" and a "framework" (rather than a definitive operations manual) whose purpose is to assist virtually any organization as it formulates whichever structure, policies, procedures, strategies, and tactics are most appropriate to its own specific needs and interests.

Throughout this exceptionally informative book, various authorities share their own experiences with sustaining distance training. For example, Ellsworth and Iorizzo discuss "Distance Training at the U.S. Army Intelligence Center: Surviving Implementation." Other essays examine initiatives in a wide range of other organizations such as SBC, the U.S. General Accounting Office, the IRS, the UAW-Daimler/Chrysler National Training Center, Ford Motor Company (dealerships), Nortel Networks, Cap Gemini Ernst & Young, the U.S. Postal Service, and the American Red Cross. Although the organizations are huge, thye various essays' authors have convinced me that literally ANY organization not only can but must -- to varying degrees -- establish and then sustain effective distance training programs, ones which would involve their employees (of course) but could also involve the employees of business partners, vendors, service providers, federal and state regulatory agencies, and perhaps even competitors. (Frankly, I am no longer surprised when historical competitors -- "enemies" -- forge mutually beneficial strategic alliances. In recent years, I have played a role in helping to consummate quite a few. "I never thought I'd live to see the day when....") All by itself, the Appendix is well worth the cost of this book. In it, Berge explains the methodology used for his book. For some it may be advisable to read the Preface and the Appendix before proceeding through the 20 essays. In any event, this is a first-rate piece of work.

Those who share my high regard for this book are urged to check out Berge's previously published Distance Training as well as Senge's The Fifth Discipline and The Dance of Change, Isaacs' Dialogue, and O'Dell and Grayson's If Only We Knew What We know.

Somewhat disappointing.......2004-09-13

I bought this book at a traditional book store -- it was on a discount to only $10.00 and I still think that I overpaid. I found many of the questions irrelevant to the step 2 testing environment, and some of the answers were just flat out wrong, and the book is only one year after publication. Explanations were also inadequate.

I would recommend purchasing one of the online question banks if you have the means - Q-bank is most like the boards, USMLEworld is significantly harder and less relevant, but both are far superior to this book. Save your money.

Excellent book.......2002-12-10

A very good book for USMLE Step 2. There are about 50% of questions in my USMLE Step 2 exam(I just took it in Nov/2002) are matching questions . You can find a lot of questions in this book are similar to the real exam, especially the matching questions.

I found this book useful for step 2 review.The content is relevant and the question format is also very similar to that in the actual exam.All in all this book is good value for money.

Not as good as I expected.......2001-03-06

This book is not as good as I expected. I did the NMS 900 Qs first. Then I did 900 Qs from this book. They are much different! Although I rate this book 3 stars, do you know how many stars I gave to NMS? Six stars---if I were allowed.

But, I have to say most of the cases in this book are good---even very good. The problem is the case arrangement and the explanation. Most of the cases are too short---as some other friends mentioned in their comments. A lot of the explanations are really bad, the authors did not explain directly---why A or B is right. Most of the time, they did not explain why the other answers are wrong. For some explanations, you really do not know what they were talking about. In addition, there are some obvious errors---like A is the right answer and B is given in the explanation.

But anyway, I still learned a lot from this book.

I think that the book that I had must have been different from the one the other reviewers purchased, because my "Appleton & Lange's Practice Test for the USMLE Step 2" had poorly written questions, with many answers that were out of date and/or incorrect. The questions were nothing like those seen on the Step 2. Questions in the book were generally 2-3 sentences long, where as on the computer based test the most of the questions were paragraphs long. The only redeaming part of the tests were that sets of questions would build on one another, forcing you to take several looks at a question. For instance- based on answer for question 'a' and 'b', what is the answer for question 'c'. This type of questioning, however, is nothing like that found on Step 2. For a quick glance at a penny store, this would be an okay book. For improving test taking skill and knowledge at it's full price tag, this one's a joke. For some much better books look at the "Crush the Boards" and "NMS-tests"

This book is an excellent source especially for computer based exam and for student who prefer to study online. Content of the questions and explanations are compatible with real exam. However, it gives your percentile of true answers right away. It would be better if it was at the end of each session.

If you have a Mac computer - read this first........2001-07-20

I bought this CD-ROM as it was meant to play on a Mac computer, however, it only works with Operating Systems 7.1 to 8.1 so if you have a newer Mac it will not play on your system.

The questions are obsolete and dated. The product format does not reflect the current exam format at all and for the number of questions I think it is over priced. There is far better software CD's available out there to help train people who are taking CBT - USMLE exams.

Good For Practice.......2000-04-13

This CD ROM was helpful in that you could start practicing for the new computer based testing. They do have explanations for why the answer is right, but do not explain why the wrong answer is wrong. Otherwise, questions were good, picture questions were also just as good. I have tried other step 2 software, and this is definitely the better of them. It's worth it to get practice.

Fun "computer-game" to prepare for the USMLE CBT format.......2000-04-01

This CD-ROM does not accurately reflect the USMLE format, but it still gives you a good simulation of taking a test on a computer. You get feedback on how well you did on each subject (i.e. Surgery, OB/Gyn etc) for each practice test, which will help you to know your weak points. It also has a review section that you can work on while you are studying the subject. The best thing about this CD-ROM is that it makes you feel like you are playing with a quiz-type computer game, and actually enjoy the test preparation.

Best Brown yet........2007-06-20

I've read about 5 or 6 Sandra Brown novels, and this one was my favorite yet. A lot of Brown's novels follow the same template especially for the mystery/suspense ones. Where the killer/bad guy turns out to be a very minor charactor who you know nothing about until you find out who he is and then it goes into this big explaination about why he was the bad guy. Then of course the happy ending with the unprotected sex that they hope results in a pregnacy..haha. It gets kind of old. But this one isn't like that AT ALL. I'm not going to summarize it or anything, but if you are like me and enjoy reading Sandra Brown but find her books a little repetive, you should really read this one.

I recently decided to reread this book when I found it in my library and saw that I had written, "Good - save" in the front of the book. I guess my tastes have changed somewhat because although the book held my interest for the most part, I didn't find it to be particularly gripping. I would probably give this book 3.5 stars if I could, but that wasn't an option so I went with 4. I found the main characters of the book to be likeable and I thought the love story part of the book was good. The storyline was also reasonably interesting. I would say that if you read the plotline for this book and think it sounds interesting, you would probably enjoy reading the book.

Compelling story of vengeance and redemption.......2006-10-25

Jade Speery returns to her hometown fifteen years after a brutal gang rape at the hands of three of her classmates, led by Neal Patchett, the sadistic son of the self-proclaimed town patriarch. Once a proud virgin, she was saving herself for her boyfriend Gary, and was devastated when even her mother didn't believe she was raped. As Neal bragged that it was consensual, Gary couldn't handle the thought of her with another man and killed himself. When she left Palmetto, she was a broken and pregnant teen; she returns Hell-bent on vengeance against the men who forever scarred her.

As her plan for vengeance takes on a life of its own, she discovers that each man and his family has a reason to want to lay claim to her teen son Graham. She's aided in her elaborate plans for retribution by builder Dillon Burke, whose construction project could put an end to the Patchett's reign of terror on Palmetto. Dillon is also scarred by a lost love. As the two grow closer, love unexpectedly sneaks up on them both. But in dealing a one-two punch on the Patchett family she doesn't realize the lengths that Neal will go to secure his "heir."

Though dated in some aspects, Brown's compelling and heart wrenching story will grab the reader and keep them glued as the story unfolds. More than a tale of vengeance, Brown tells a sweeping story of redemption and a mature second chance at love.

A Real Page Turner.......2006-09-11

Even though this book was written in 1991, the story is still relevant today. I read this book based on the reviews here in Amazon and I wasn't disappointed. While the story begins with an unspeakable act that goes from bad to worse, there are some good things that eventually come out of it. Jade Sperry was a terrific heroine and I loved her eventual relationship with Dillon Burke. Both of these people have tragic pasts that they manage to deal with together. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and have to say, that it is one of Sandra Brown's best that I've read so far. I'm looking forward to reading some of her newer novels like Chill Factor and Ricochet.

What goes around, comes around!.......2006-07-27

This book was so good, I have read it twice now. I love how fate comes back around and smacks all the "bad guys" in the face. For some it takes awhile but they all get what they deserve in the end. Jade is a good strong character and one you can really look up to. I love when there are strong women in books and not just whiny, clingy ones. This is a must read!

This was okay read, really. Julian is Sinjun's (book 1) brother.

Julian's mysterous coming and goings is mentioned in book #1; that comes into play here.

Well, he is injured and rescued by band of gypsies and in the "gypsie way" he is "married" to Lara (1/2 gypsy; 1/2 wealthly daughter of English man).

Here is where this book falls apart for me. All the "I don't want to be married, you're not my wife, but let's have sex." OOKKAAAYYY

Julian, the rat, sneaks off in the wee morning hours to return to his life.

Lara is forced to seek out her English father and they end up reuniting at a formal ball.

If you like Connie Mason books, you may like this, too.

A great book.......2006-11-25

Julian Thornton, The Earl of Mansfield has been in service to the Crown. But all that he has done has been state alone. He is trying to capture the Jackel, the man that murder his wife-to-be. After being nearly discover is taken in the group Gypsy. After finding himself to the beautiful Lara, Julian live convinced that he see here again. But Lara is hiding something too, she is the daughter of an Earl. Now Julian feel bound to marry her, but the Jackel is not far behind and all those Julian holds dear are in danger.
"A Breath of Scandal" is the follow-up book to "A Touch of Sin" that are from both from Connie Mason. Again this book had good plotline with sexy parts that made the reader want more. And the good thing is you don't need to have read the first book to enjoy this one!

Julian's Story.......2002-11-17

This story is the sequel to Sin's story. You do see him as well as Emma in different parts of this story.

Julian is still spying for the crown and is actually the notorious "Scorpion" that is searching of for the Jackal. When he is discovered during a one smuggling excursion and is captured. He manages to escape by jumping overboard and being shot. While out walking the next day Lara (part gypsy, part Ton member) finds him on the beach and is immediately drawn to him. She gets help and takes him back to the camp where her grandmother helps to save him. At the same time the Jackal's men are looking for him. Lara claims that not only is he sick but he is her husband. Due to a bizarre set of events this actually makes them married in the eyes of the Gypsies... Interesting for a man who has sworn off marriage.

In true jerk form he doesn't believe that she is wife, that she is a virgin or that she is anything other than a Gypsy and therefore below him as an Earl. He leaves in the early morning.

Much to his surprise they meet again at a ball thrown in her favor by her father (of course Julian jumps to the wrong conclusion about why she is there). Then both her life and Emma's are in danger causing Julian to take some strong arm tactics and flee to Scotland (with Lara). Though Julian is a huge jerk throughout most of this story I really liked it and was glad to read about Julian and Emma as well as Lara :)

Sexy Romp..........2001-11-08

This book is a sequel to A TASTE OF SIN, which is one of my favorite HRN. I've always wondered about Julian, elder brother of Sinjun in the prequel. He was described as a very honorable & responsible person albeit mysterious. He live by the rules and is over protective of his family. He also have a dark personal mission. To find the person responsible for the death of his fiancee. His character here in A Breathe of Scandal is consistent but is of course more detailed. We learn more about him and he is definitely not the prude man I thought he was in ATOS. In fact, he is a very passionate man. On one of his secret mission he was rescued my a gypsy woman named Lara. She claimed him as his husband to save his life. Yes, Lara did save him from death but she also added complication to his well contained heart & well organized life. What a riot! I love Lara's character. She is no nonsense and straight forward. She knows who she is and what she wants regardless of her new station in life. Sometimes she feels she doesn't fit in outside the Gypsy world yet she adapts well and never loses her personality. The Gypsies and their way of life was an interesting read for me. This is my first book with such kind of plot & the way Ms. Mason explains and describes it makes me feel like I am inside the book. It grabs my imagination. A Gypsy woman versus a Noble sure have a big difference in their ways of living and belief. Interesting! The relationship development of Julian & Lara is heart warming. They are both full of desire despite the contradiction of their mind. There's lots of sex scenes but I didn't mind it. For me, it's written with passion. You can feel their affection and not just lust. Of course, there's always the usual confusions and misunderstanding twist but there is also some element of surprises between them.

The action and mystery line was a bit light and predictable, however since I am not much on action/mystery, this didn't bother me at all. Just thought I'd mention it here for others who prefer heavy action/mystery added on their romance books.

The appearance of the characters in A TASTE OF SIN was one of the best part for me. I love reading updates of the characters from my previous books especially if they are my favorites. The Epilogue of this book was simply perfect. It's happy, filled with love, family & children. Goose bumps alert :-)

The reason why this book didn't belong to a five star rate to me is because of the added romance of Emma and Rudy. I loved Emma's spunky character in A TASTE OF SIN and couldn't wait to read her very own story. I didn't expect her to simply be an extra piece here in A BREATHE OF SCANDAL. I didn't mind her marriage with Rudy, I think it's fitting but I would have love to read how she tamed Rudy. I just want more of her. Oh well, that's only a small niggle which unfortunately took one star out of my overall rating.

A BREATH OF SCANDAL TAKES MY BREATH AWAY.......2001-04-04

Juxtaposed with A Taste of Sin, Ms Mason's first offering from her Scottish Highlands installment, A Breath of scandal fares much better. In fact, this time she puts her spicy narration to her advantage and not just a story overload with lewd scenes to titillate as in the first novel. A Breath of Scandal is sexy but with a heart - the characters molded out by Ms. Mason brings the pages alive. Julian Thornton is the brother of Sinjun and his rigid decorum belies a secret agent identity "Scorpion". He is haunted by the phantom of his demised fiancee Diana and swears to take vengeance on The Jackal, the mastermind behind a smuggling ring and who caused the death of Diana.

On his secret mission, he fell prey to the hunchmen of the Jackal but is saved by a half Gypsy girl, Lara. From there, the attraction is set - Lara sacrifices her pride to pose as Julian's wife and to hide him from his tenacious enemy, he assumes the identity as Lara's husband, Drago. After nights of passion, Julian and Lara forged a tenuous love only to be shattered by Julian's guilt and the mismatching social status. It is only after he returns to London did he find that Lara is actually the daughter of the Earl of Stanhope.Their reunion is short-lived - with the chase of enemy behind both of them, their love would prove even more difficult....

Connie Mason sculpts the characters to finesse in this book. I was a bit disappointed with Sinjun's profligate ways last time, but Julian shows a more nuanced, mellow and resilient shade which I much preferred. The only thing was his xenophobia and parochial view on Gypsy group - even to the shallow point of thinking Lara was a loose woman. Lara - as usual is strong, brave and decisive, as with all the women characters in Ms. Mason's book. Ms. Mason does not disappoint. The passionate scenes are fiery and sensual, and complimented by an exciting plot to the finish, A BREATH OF SCANDAL is lushly scandalous to take the breath away from the fanatics.
