The Life of Jesus in Small Nugget Form.......2000-06-24
This book gives practical advice in communication and interaction with others using examples from the life of Jesus. It is set up a bit like a daily devotional rather than chapter form. Each "nugget" is one or two pages long and includes both a title and theme quote. Some examples of theme quotes from the book are. - Jesus was authoritative, not authoritarian. - Jesus kept his finger on the pulse of the world. - Look for several people you want for friends. - Jesus kept his complaints private. - Jesus went beyond doing good things for good people. - People become what you call them. - Jesus was discreet in his use of power. - Jesus dealt directly with his enemies. These are just of few of the 59 miniature power lessons from the life of Jesus. This makes a great gift or coffee table book as well as helpful personal tool.

APPALLING book ! Full of insulting stereotypes & little insight!.......2006-05-14
I have a long-standing interest in cultural issues in healthcare and so I eagerly bought this book. It's in the 3rd edition--I figured it must be good.
It is appalling! You can turn to almost any page and find a portayal of a person from a minority culture that is presented in such a way that it makes the person sound like an idiot. Not just immigrant and ethnic minority patients--immigrant medical professionals, too.
In addition, she does not modify her gross generalizations by saying, "HIGHLY OBSERVANT Muslims" or "LESS-ACCULTURATED Mexicans" or even "SOME Chinese." No, for Galanti, she generalizes about Muslims, Mexicans and Chinese, with no gradations according to people's country of origin and degrees of orthodoxy (e.g. Muslims), generations in this country, fluency in English, etc.
I am afraid this volume will perpetuate stereotypes. Yes, it may be "fun reading" for people who know nothing about the topic, but they will end up with a view of "how weird those people are!" rather than either any true cultural understanding or a better sense of how to adapt their own practice to meet their patients' needs.
i have never returned a book in my life--this is going to be the first.
For alternative choices on related topics consider:
Culture & Clinical Care (Lipson & Dibble)
Ethnicity & Family THerapy (McGoldrick)
Child Abuse & Culture: Working with diverse families (Fontes)
The spirit Catches You and YOu Fall Down (Fadiman).
Stay away from this one!
tough topic.......2005-10-28
Did not find this to be all that much different informationwise than the other healthcare culture sensitivity books out there
Loved it!.......2004-12-14
I bought this book to do research for a class and from the time I opend it I could not put it down. What a facinating read into different cultures. Highly reccomend to anyone who is intersted in their medical care of people from other cultures or religious groups.
Fascinating read..........2003-10-01
This book is the definitive work on this subject, one that is sorely ignored by the medical community in general. I'm a physician and specialize in children's diseases and treatment. I have given a copy of Ms Galanti's book to every colleage I know. A must have for any physician or other medical professional, in particular those who practice in urban centers.
High School Biology Teacher.......2002-01-11
My students loved the real life situations in this book!
I recommend that teachers use this to incorporate multiculturalism in a very meaningful way in biology classes, and welcome ideas about how others use it. The way I did it was to present the problem, have students brainstorm what they might do, and then reveal the resolution (or lack of one) from the book. I am so glad I found this while browsing the medical section. You are not likely to find a used copy for sale because the stories are so interesting to everyone.

Book Description
The book presents new concepts in the study of gravitation. A new equation for the gravitational force is introduced, which is the correct interpretation of Kepler's third law and which has been verified experimentally to very high precision. The equation is F = a.A, or force = acceleration Area. The book also presents equations for the sequential distances of the planets from the sun and of satellites from the centers of Jupiter, Saturn, and Uranus, with correlation coefficients upwards of 0.99, concluding that gravitation is quantized. A simple and useful equation for eccentricity is presented as the ratio of the sum of perturbations to the gravitational force of the sun. It is shown that Kepler's second law is not a general law; i.e., equal areas are swept in approximately equal intervals of time only near aphelion and perihelion. There is now confusion between the concepts of "force" and "energy." In the last chapter of the book, new units are introduced to clarify the two concepts. Any equation containing "mass" relates to the concept of "energy". Force is independent of mass.
Customer Reviews:
Mass is a Fictitous Quantity.......2006-09-28
Pari Spolter, who is not a physicist, argues based on experimental observations that the force of gravity is proportional to acceleration and not the fictitous quantity called mass. Furthermore, she argues from experimental observations that gravitation is quantized. These arguments invalidate the approximate theories of Newton's Universal Law of Gravitation and Einstein's General Relativity Theory when the scientific method based on the rules of logic is used. It is sad that science has degenerated to fads and political maneuvering to garnish government funds for research such that original thinkers such as Pari Spolter are largely ignored.

A pocket calculator is all you need........2003-01-26
If you have difficulty understanding relativistic and quantum physics due to an insufficient grounding in mathematics, which I do, that does not mean that complexity equates with error. This book is a waste for those interested in science.
Grav. F of the S shows some major errors of modern physics.......2001-03-05
After reading this book it becomes clear how wrong Einstein really was.
The way mrs. Spolter tackled his theories is most convincing and gives me some comfort there are still some independent thinkers who know how to ring the bell.

Book Description
The fragmentary fossil record of primates and hominids has generated fundamental, and often well publicised, differences of opinion about their evolution. The objective of this book, based upon a joint symposium of the Anatomical Society and the Primate Society of Great Britain, is to present an up-to-date review of the major problem areas, aimed specifically to meet the requirements of students. For some issues, leading proponents of ‘rival’ schools present their viewpoint; for others, distinguished contributors have reviewed a particularly important or controversial problem, presenting a non-partisan objective analysis. By including papers that adopt contrasting opinions towards the reconstruction of evolutionary relationships and by incorporating the current interpretations of the fossil evidence, this volume provides a valuable synthesis of the new thinking about primate and human palaeontology.

John Irving's A Widow For One Year is the epic story of a family, dysfunctional at best, unable to cope with tragedy--or with each other. The unabridged audiobook, narrated by George Guidall (The Cat Who Sang for the Birds, The Inner Sanctum, The Legacy) draws the listener in with a crisp, methodical vocal presentation. Guidall portrays each character with a convincingly distinct voice, accurately impersonating the characters' intonations and verbal habits. The interaction between characters is both conversational and believable.
We first meet Ruth Cole in the summer of 1958 when she walks in on her mother having sex with 16-year-old Eddie O'Hare, the assistant to Ruth's alcoholic father. The death of Ruth's older brothers (years before she was born) turns her mother, Marion, into a zombie who is unable to love her surviving daughter. Ted Cole is a semisuccessful writer and illustrator of disturbingly creepy children's novels. His womanizing habits prove he's "as deceitful as a damaged condom," but he remains the only stable figure in Ruth's life. The tempestuous tale fast-forwards to the year 1990 when Ruth's soaring writing career is faring far better than her lackluster love life. The final segment of the novel ends in 1995 when 41-year-old Ruth is ready to fall in love for the first time.
This profoundly absorbing story expresses the depths of misery and the healing power of love. Irving writes as a true storyteller, and Guidall executes the narrative with vigor and enthusiasm. (Running time: 24.5 hours, 14 cassettes) --Gina Kaysen
Book Description
Ruth Cole is a complex, often self-contradictory character--a "difficult" woman. By no means is she conventionally "nice," but she will never be forgotten.
Ruth's story is told in three parts, each focusing on a crucial time in her life. When we first meet her--on Long Island, in the summer of 1958--Ruth is only four.
The second window into Ruth's life opens in the fall of 1990, when Ruth is an unmarried woman whose personal life is not nearly as successful as her literary career. She distrusts her judgment in men, for good reason.
A Widow for One Year closes in the autumn of 1995, when Ruth Cole is a forty-one-year-old widow and mother. She's about to fall in love for the first time.
Richly comic, as well as deeply disturbing
A Widow for One Year is a multilayered love story of astonishing emotional force. Both ribald and erotic, it is also a brilliant novel about the passage of time and the relentlessness of grief.

Twenty years after The World According to Garp, John Irving gives us a new novel about a family marked by tragedy and the "difficult" women who survive.
Ruth Cole is a complex, often self-contradictory character. By no means is she conventionally "nice", but she will never be forgotten. Ruth's story is told in three parts, each focusing on a critical time in her life. When we first meet her -- in the Hamptons in the summer of 1958 -- Ruth is only four. Her parents, having suffered the loss of two children before Ruth was born, are still haunted by their memories of these unspeakable deaths; now Ruth's mother is having an affair with a sixteen-year-old boy, while her father sleeping with someone else's wife.
The second window into Ruth's life opens in the fall of 1990, when Ruth is a renowned author -- and an unmarried woman whose personal life is not nearly as successful as her literary career. Ruth distrusts her judgment in men, for good reason.
A Widow for One Year closes in tile autumn of 1995, when Ruth Cole is a widow and a mother. She's about to fall in love for the first time.

Avoid it........2007-09-11
There are some Irving books I would give 5 starts to but I couldn't finish this one.
Good book, but over rated.......2007-08-27
While reading this book I was thinking, wow this is a really good book. By the end however I was getting a bit tired of it. The characters began by being well-developed by sadly I felt by the end of the novel their characteristics had been exaggerated to the point that they no longer rang true. The span of time was interesting although a bit over repeated. If you haven't figured out how old marion is and how long it's been you must have skipped a lot of pages. It did get a bit tedious at times with some repetitive details but I was able to the most part let that glide right on by.
It's a solid read. My only complaint would really be the exaggeration of the characters. It felt by the end of the book as if the writer was afraid that you would have some how missed the character traits and thus felt the need to point them out a bit more blatantly so that you wouldn't miss the overall connecting themes and overlaps. I found it took a great deal away from the reality of the book as the characters began to be one-dimensional by the end. A quote from the book that sums up a great deal... "What mattered was that the details seemed real, and that it was absolutely the best detail for the circumstances"
Enjoyable Read.......2007-03-15
No question that this is an enjoyable read. At times, Irving can be repetitive, going over the same things until you just want to skip over portions (his descriptions of photographs comes to mind).
As in Garp, Irving punishes certain characters for sexual transgressions, and knowing that Irving likes to do this, you expect this familiar device to appear. Knowing that Irving fully believes in "What goes around, comes around" tarnishes the experience of reading the novel, because you know what surprises to expect (no longer a surprise if you expect it).
This book is not comparable to Garp, but an enjoyable read, nevertheless.
hilarious, sad, rich with meaning.......2007-02-24
I chose to read this because part of it is set in Amsterdam where I was travelling and because I rhink so highly of John Irving. I was not disappointed. It was completely involving and evoked and wide panoply of emotions. It gave an unusually intimate view of the Red Light district of Amsterdam that enriched my trip to that city. This book has much to offer many kinds of readers.
best-selling novelist writes book about best selling novelists who think about more novels and novelists ad nauseum.......2007-02-16
Finally, after 343 pages of utter drivel, all the while searching for the buried qualities that would make 1) this a best-seller, 2) the critics hail this as his best since Garp, 3)it a good laugh, I threw it away in complete disgust and maddening frustration. I won't donate this book. I'll pretend I didn't waste good money on it, thank myself for not buying the hardback version at twice the price, already wary of Irving's decline.
Maybe Irving was playing with us, maybe he knows his substantial reputation would carry the day, maybe he just does not have it any more, maybe the critics should get a case of collective amnesia, forgetting Irving's past success with Garp, so that they could approach his work with unbiased faculties. Maybe.....I've been sucked into the Undertoad.
In any case I've never been more relieved to stop the torture arising from my dumbed down expectations about an Irving novel. I can't imagine I'd ever buy another one without sitting down and reading 50 pages before plunking down the cold cash to own one.
Boo.
Product Description
How many hours of the day do millions of people grieve silently for a partner they've lost in life? Death comes easy to no one...especially to those who are left behind.
In 1999, I lost my husband to cancer. I was 47 at the time, and it took awhile to sort through my emotions and gather the strength to face daily living again. A year and a half into widowhood, I realized how alone I felt going through all those first experiences: taking off my wedding rings, figuring out which side of the bed to sleep on, and getting through our anniversary. I then launched a Web site that generated feedback from other widows and widowers - so they could share their stories and experiences with grief and loss. The response was overwhelming.
From Singapore to England to South Australia, I gathered and organized my Web site's library of material into a book that pays tribute to the millions of people who lose a partner and have to reinvent their lives and try to move forward.
The After Journey is a collection of people's thoughts and words of wisdom based on their experiences after suffering a great loss in their lives. Each section begins with my own story and leads into the reflections of others on the same topic, some of those voices drawing tears from readers, while others conjuring sheer laughter and a sense of relief. The book is simply a friend that can hold our hand when getting through the first year alone. It proves that you're not alone in this very personal journey, and that you have every right to do it your own way - embracing every step as one movement closer to finding joy again in life.

A support group in a book!.......2006-03-23
I have been leading widowed support groups for several years. A variety of topics continue to be addressed by most widowed people. This book takes these topics and talks about them similar to the way they are discussed in a suport group. Many people are afraid to bring up items in group as they think they are going crazy or are the only people to feel as they do. Laurie-Ann's book brings out these issues and discusses them in a way that is applicable to every person who has lost their spouse or partner. Excellent book that every widowed person should have and read.
Important book for widowed people.......2006-03-19
I write a newspaper column titled "Single Again" for the Orange County Register in southern California. I am in daily contact with new widows and widowers. I recommend to them Laurie-Ann's book. It will help them fight their way through the first year after losing their spouse.
Laurie-Ann lost her husband unexpectedly. She describes her way through the pain and then provides encouraging tips for people having similar experiences. A 5-star must read. Highly recommended.

A Little Book with a Big Heart and an Abundance of Wisdom.......2006-03-03
This book will pull you in and never let you go. Hearing the stories and thoughts of others within the backdrop of Laurie-Ann's own story is both haunting and heart-warming--whether you've experienced a loss like the author's or not (yet). You'll cry and you'll laugh. And you'll want to talk about this book when you're done. For those going through that very personal journey of recovering from the death of a loved one, which is on ongoing process that never really ends, this book can be your best friend who holds tighly onto your hand.
widower.......2006-02-22
As a widower,When I started reading your book it made me very sad because I related to the stories . Then I realized I wasn't alone . That I am normal . We are sometimes told how to handle our grief. Everyone need to handle their grief in there own way and not be critized for it ' Laurie you wrote the book BUT IT'S OUR BOOK a book we can share and know we aren't alone in grief
Thanks . This is a book every grievance counselor should read because it came from the heart of the people who lost someone .
A Journey Of Personal Experience.......2006-02-22
Laurie's book helps people who are actively grieving to feel normal. It gives people permisssion to feel and draws them in as would a trusted friend and confidant. I know this by experience as I facilitate a grief support group and this has been their response.

Honest fiction.......2004-06-26
I truly enjoyed this book. As in many of Irving's works, the themes of impossible coincidence and the "sins of the father" run rampant. The notion that fiction can simply be fiction is not lost in this rich novel with its seriously flawed characters. The main character Ruth, is a true person in the sense of her lack of true decisiveness and ability to acknowledge that the world isn't perfect but oddly comforting. The sentiments and questions regarding parental responsibility and love are important and the concept that what happens in our past is inherently linked to our future is persuasive.
Perhaps this book is not a literary giant yet it takes a stand on the true meaning of fiction -- it can be whatever it wants to be. This is a great summer read that has more meat than the average beach book.
AWFUL.......2003-10-10
I Finally finished this book today. It's going straight into the trash can. The characters are not realistic at all, the story goes all over the place and it'd take me too long to go on with what's wrong with it. I'm sorry to have wasted my time reading it when there are so many good books to be read.
