                Book Description

Nothing in Your Life Is Ordinary

Your present world isn’t supposed to be this small. You were made for something much bigger. And no, you don’t have to be an astronaut, or even a Star Wars fan, to live it. Finding God in a Galaxy Far, Far Away is not about space travel, or even a movie. It’s about rediscovering your sense of wonder—something we adults have successfully squelched from our everyday lives. But God never meant it to be that way. Timothy Jones, by way of an astounding, eye-opening study of the spiritual parallels found in the Star Wars saga, will make you a kid again. You’ll be marveling at the mysterious, laughing anew at life’s “coincidences,” and remembering above all the Creator for which you were made.

May the True Force Be with You

Remember when Star Wars first captured your imagination? How your longing for adventure propelled you to distant worlds and transformed you into a Jedi knight faster than you could say, “Luke, I am your father”?

This same longing, once sparked by John Williams’s triumphant score and fanned by Darth Vader’s sweeping black cape, is your ticket to life’s greatest adventure.

Join Timothy Paul Jones on an astounding, eye-opening exploration of the spiritual themes in the Star Wars saga and the truth will become clear: Like young Luke Skywalker, you were also made for more—much more.

Rediscover awe. Revel in the wonder of every moment. And pursue all you were meant to be. It is your destiny.

"The Force is strong with this one. I could not recommend it more."

                Joshua Griffin, Editor/Owner, TheForce.Net

                Manager, Purpose Driven Youth Ministry

“If you own a lightsaber—or a Bible—you’re sure to benefit from reading his book.”

                Kevin Miller, author and reviewer

                HollywoodJesus.com

“‘Awe-some’ reading that both delights and challenges us. A fun and thoughtful book for Christians who consider and enjoy popular culture and media.”

                Robert W. Pazmino

Valeria Stone Professor of Christian Education, Andover Newton Theological School

                Story Behind the Book

“The night I first saw Star Wars from the backseat of my parents’ Ford Pinto was the first night I experienced awe. It sent me on a quest that continues today. There is, in every one of us, a longing to touch ‘the forever,’ to sense the magnitude of the vastness in which we live. This universal longing explains why we ride roller coasters and tell scary stories. This universal longing for awe also explains why, after nearly thirty years, the popularity of the Star Wars saga shows no sign of subsiding. I wrote this book to inspire readers to relish awe and wonder because God did not only create us to long for awe, but also to live in it!”

                —Timothy Jones

                Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Good book if you're into scriptures........2006-07-14

My only problem (and this is a PERSONAL problem, let me be clear) is that there are too many comparisons with the bible, which to me is just, basically, a fictional anthology. There were some good points brought up in the book, along with some good quotes.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Spiritual Exploration .......2006-05-19

I have not honestly ever considered how Star Wars and my own spiritual path could ever be related. But in this novel, Jones helps me realize how the Star Wars saga helped to foster my spirituality at a young age and helped me gain a better appreciation of my own faith. This novel was a wonderful, serious, and interesting read. I highly recommend it to those who seek something more out of their Star Wars movie experience and would like to deepen their faith.

                5 out of 5 stars Entertaining--and Profound.......2006-01-07

In Finding God in a Galaxy Far Far Away, Timothy Paul Jones writes with the heart of a poet and the mind of a theologian. His exploration into the universe of Star Wars actually led me to a deeper understanding of the awe of God that runs through all of life. When Timothy wrote "I was made with a longing for awe..." I got shivers. The great fun of this book is the way the author highlights the nostalgia we all feel for the Star Wars movies and then uses those warm feelings to introduce us to deep, intimate truths about God. Since you can "look inside this book" on your own, I won't bother repeating the table of contents to you. But I will say this is one I can easily recommend.

                5 out of 5 stars Amazing insight!.......2006-01-04

In Finding God in a Galaxy Far, Far Away, Timothy Paul Jones--a long time, avid fan of Star Wars--displays amazing insight into the world of the Star Wars characters and a deep admiration for this extremely influential saga. However, he does so without losing his personal Christian worldview. He is able to blend the two by comparing, matching, and sometimes contrasting specific quotations from the movies with direct quotes from numerous Christian apologists and scholars throughout the ages. Among others, he takes lines from G. K. Chesterton, author of Orthodoxy, from C.S. Lewis, author of Mere Christianity and The Chronicles of Narnia, from J.R.R. Tolkien, author of The Lord of the Rings, and from John Chrysostom, a fourth century Christian theologian. Jones points out that the same awe that is a fundamental element of the Star Wars films can also be found in the miraculous elements of the Christian faith.

Like the initial Star Wars trilogy, Jones divides his book into three sections. He begins by examining the introspective awe of life, the universe, of the variations in creation, and of the constant struggle of good versus evil as depicted in Star Wars and in Christianity. He expands this eventually to include the awe of probing, reflecting on, and trying to define the great unknown, both metaphorically as "space" and religiously as "God." Secondly, he provides plot summaries and an appendix of references for anyone who has not seen all of the Star Wars movies or who may have forgotten key aspects of each movie--since the films were released as episodes 4, 5, 6, 1, 2, and 3, out of sequence. Thirdly, he includes a study guide so fans of the movies or groups of Christians can use the book in a discussion group.

Most likely, this book will appeal to young people or to science fiction fans in general. To that end, however, it could be a clever witnessing tool for reaching a generation that never tires of talking about the adventures of Luke Skywalker, Darth Vader, and Han Solo. -- Mike Hentz, Christian Book Previews.com

This book is very detailed and the CD-Rom has excellent pictures. The only downfall is that the mathmatical functions are not detailed enough for me.

4 out of 5 stars up to date introduction.......2005-07-19

A very solid, and up to date discussion of modern astronomy. Well suited for undergraduate astronomy majors taking a first course. You get a coherent formulation of our best understanding of galaxy formation on a cosmological scale. And also how first and second generation stars appear and evolve. Then, within a stellar system, how planets can condense out of gas.

Naturally, our solar system is well described. From both observations made on Earth and by satellites (especially the Hubble), and by US and Russian probes.

The CD will appeal to some of you. Arny has put considerable effort into it. But the main text stands well, even if the CD is missing.

Like the one-time bestseller Jonathan Livingston Seagull, The Alchemist presents a simple fable, based on simple truths and places it in a highly unique situation. And though we may sniff a bestselling formula, it is certainly not a new one: even the ancient tribal storytellers knew that this is the most successful method of entertaining an audience while slipping in a lesson or two. Brazilian storyteller Paulo Coehlo introduces Santiago, an Andalusian shepherd boy who one night dreams of a distant treasure in the Egyptian pyramids. And so he's off: leaving Spain to literally follow his dream.

Along the way he meets many spiritual messengers, who come in unassuming forms such as a camel driver and a well-read Englishman. In one of the Englishman's books, Santiago first learns about the alchemists--men who believed that if a metal were heated for many years, it would free itself of all its individual properties, and what was left would be the "Soul of the World." Of course he does eventually meet an alchemist, and the ensuing student-teacher relationship clarifies much of the boy's misguided agenda, while also emboldening him to stay true to his dreams. "My heart is afraid that it will have to suffer," the boy confides to the alchemist one night as they look up at a moonless night.

"Tell your heart that the fear of suffering is worse than the suffering itself," the alchemist replies. "And that no heart has ever suffered when it goes in search of its dreams, because every second of the search is a second's encounter with God and with eternity." --Gail Hudson

                                      Book Description

Paulo Coelho's enchanting novel has inspired a devoted following around the world, and this tenth anniversary edition, with a new introduction from the author, will only increase that following. This story, dazzling in its powerful simplicity and inspiring wisdom, is about an Andalusian shepherd boy named Santiago who travels from his homeland in Spain to the Egyptian desert in search of a treasure buried in the Pyramids. Along the way he meets a Gypsy woman, a man who calls himself king, and an alchemist, all of whom point Santiago in the direction of his quest. No one knows what the treasure is, or if Santiago will be able to surmount the obstacles along the way. But what starts out as a journey to find worldly goods turns into a discovery of the treasures found within. Lush, evocative, and deeply humane, the story of Santiago is an eternal testament to the transforming power of our dreams and the importance of listening to our hearts.

My Heart Is Afraid that it will have to suffer," the boy told the alchemist one night as they looked up at the moonless sky."Tell your heart that the fear of suffering is worse than the suffering itself. And that no heart has ever suffered when it goes in search of its dreams."

Every few decades a book is published that changes the lives of its readers forever. The Alchemist is such a book. With over a million and a half copies sold around the world, The Alchemist has already established itself as a modern classic, universally admired. Paulo Coelho's charming fable, now available in English for the first time, will enchant and inspire an even wider audience of readers for generations to come.

The Alchemist is the magical story of Santiago, an Andalusian shepherd boy who yearns to travel in search of a worldly treasure as extravagant as any ever found. From his home in Spain he journeys to the markets of Tangiers and across the Egyptian desert to a fateful encounter with the alchemist.

The story of the treasures Santiago finds along the way teaches us, as only a few stories have done, about the essential wisdom of listening to our hearts, learning to read the omens strewn along life's path, and, above all, following our dreams.

This is a special book that makes an uplifting gift to someone wanting to seek their dream, but isn't sure to take that first step. I will read this again.

The Alchemist is an amazing book for anyone "searching for answers". It really reinforces the notion that it's all about the journey - not the destination. Well written and far more complex than the simple writing style might lead you to believe. This edition was a gift for a friend - it's beautiful to look at, as well.

A co-worker brought her copy of this book in one day for me to see. It was love at first sight and I knew I wanted my own copy. A month later, I bought one for myself on my birthday. I read it in two afternoons. It is a really good book. I would suggest it to anyone. It is very simple writing but the message is quite deep.

I liked THE ALCHEMIST, but didn't love it. It starts out very well, but it quickly gets bogged down by excessive symbolism and a lot of detail that didn't seem essential to the story.

The major point of this book is to pursue your life dreams, as opposed to making excuses for not doing so. I certainly support this message, but I felt that Coelho took 165 pages to convey a relatively straightforward point. This book is also heavily unrealistic in spots (the wind talks, the sun, etc.), which diminishes the power of its message, at least to me.

I read the most recent trade paperback edition of THE ALCHEMIST, and would suggest that you read the four-page introduction by Paulo Coelho before purchasing this novel. In that introduction, Coelho summarizes the main themes and ideas of THE ALCHEMIST in a crystal clear manner that I thought was more effective than the novel itself. If the message resonates with you, then by all means buy this book and enjoy it. Otherwise, you probably will not like it.

5 out of 5 stars Yea, I'll add to the hype, but just look past it all........2007-07-31

                                      No spoilers.

If you're reading these online reviews in order to determine if you'll like The Alchemist based off of what others thought about it, then you're probably a little confused right now. The best advice on this I can give is that if you read it and like it/love it like many people here, then obviously you'll be happy with your choice, but if you read it and don't like it/hate it, it's not a big deal because it's one of the shorter quality novels you'll ever come across at only 192 pages.

Having said that, I'm adding to the hype about this book by saying that I can't recall coming across novel with such presence and thought in such a simple form. One negative reviewer claimed reading this was like reading a high school book report, and the odd thing about that comment is, while I can see where a comment like that would come from due to simplicity of the writing style, the thoughts behind the words come from nothing less than a great thinker.

If you're skeptical about reading this book, please just ignore the reviews (I guess that would mean mine too :] ) and take the chance to do it for yourself. Will this book change your life? No. Is it the best most ispirational book ever written. Well that's subjective, but for me, no. It's just a great book to step away from your hectic world with for an evening (and believe me, you probably will finish this in an evening), so give it a try.

I would have to say the only thing preventing this from a 1 star ranking from me is that the overall message is rather harmless. Unfortunately the writing style may cause headaches and eyestrain. It's very repetitive and inelegant, and very self-aware. the story is VERY religious, and very predictable. I think the biggest problem I had with this book is that it is a modern attempt at an ancient style. What makes fables and ancient text appealing to me is the connectedness I feel with people and places that are centuries old. This is nothing more than a hijacking of the fable mechanism transformed to modern new-age fluff. I'd suggest it for kids, but I think most adults will find themselves rolling their eyes at the heavy handed cliche's found in this highly overrated beach book

If stories were paint and words a paintbrush, this is one peice of art I would visit in a galary everyday -just to look at it. Nothing else, just look at it. The picture the author has painted with this story is inpiring and goes very well with another book that is, sadly, out of print: A Champion Lies Within.

Although I read a slighlty different version earlier in my life, when I saw the Illustrated version of the Alchemist at a random yard sale- I had to have it for my collection.

Its not even the story itself that is so grand - Although it is well written and illustrated, I'd say that its message is one that the world should hear.

Pick it up! It doesnt take long to read but the on-going lessons that it provides are a real treat. Besides being provokative- if you just want a good read it is very entertaining! I know you will love it - as well as many others by the same author.

And all you others... stop complaining so much about all this neo-pagan neo-christian Stuff! Its like refusing to look at a painting just because it was done by a german or a jew or something. Take it for what it is, take what you WANT out of it and stop griping about what you DONT want because that helps no-one.

That said- I gladly give it 5 stars. ~Enjoy

This is an amazing book. It is a story of a young man who has a dream of hidden treasure. It is a book that alludes to that fact that all of us have a purpose and a dream. Yet many settle and give up their dream, and lose their passion for life. In this book it is stated again and again that each of us has our own Personal Legend, a quest; "When you pursue your personal legend the universe will conspire with you to make it happen." You will follow Santiago on his adventure and during the process be challenged to think about your goals and dreams and what you would have to do to pursue them.

Mr. Coelho did an excellent job. It's a wonderful book. I wish I could give it 10 stars. The metaphors are very unique, simple and applicable to our daily life. I would recommend it to everybody who can read. It doesn't matter you are a child or old. There is something in it for everybody. I don't know who did the translation but I hope it's as close to original meaning as possible.

In "The Alchemist" I thought the author's fable about the shepherd boy, Santiago, and his travels were an interesting story. I loved every second of Santiago's search for his treasure by the pyramids and his journey through the desert. The book gave a wonderful insight into a person that is seeking their own destiny and learning from that pursuit. I did have a hard time connecting with the character Fatima. Maybe it was her fate, but I was hoping she would do more that sit around and wait for his return. Overall, Paulo Coelho prose is delightful, and inspirational and direct. I have already given my book club members a 4 star rating on this book and I'd gladly recommend it to all my friends.

Another challenging Young Adult book (Mother's also) check out the gripping story Tommytown by Robert L. Saunders. This novel is based on a real family living in sheer poverty during the 1950's and is told through the eyes of 11-year-old Barry Foreman and his sister Karen as they watch their mother, Helen, struggle to survive with her 7 children. Sorry, no sorcerer is going to show up and wave a magic wand and make Helen's troubles go away. Its not all gloom and doom as the author ensures there is a mix of humor and a light-hearted spirit among the brothers and sisters. It's a refreshing, warm tale that gripped my senses as it centered on the children's adoration for their mother, their perseverance to endure hardship, and verbal scorn at school. Check it out you won't be disappointed. So Long.

I've read hundreds of books with many more pages, and more complex storylines and none can compare with the simplicity and knowledge to be gained from reading this wonderful book. I highly recommend this book as a great read for anyone suffering from a loss of a sense of purpose, unrealized dreams or waining ambition. Paul Coehlo is a master with words, imagery and unconscious teaching strategies.

I was looking forward to this book, and I must admit I am a bit disappointed with the outcome. I give three star because I don't want to be too harsh (I think the reader who offered a one star and called this book pure trash is quite misguided!). Part of my disappontment is a result of my poor research on this book as I did not realize it had some biblical influences, and, although that's all nice and fine, those are not the books I am interested in. This being said, I did find this story to be rather typical, run of the mill, story about one, perhaps via a godly intervention, following his/her dream and discovering the meaning of life in the process. I found myself looking forward to the end of the book, just to be satisfied with my having completed it to then put it away. For a book that is supposed to be very inspirational, I am finding myself rather uninspired by its message. Perhaps it is a result of my lack of interest in inspirational books. In any case, I am glad this was a quick read.

When I heard about this book from others it seemed a little good to be true. Books/movies are usually overrated by the time I get to them. But this novel lived up to it's hype. This may be because I read it in a time in my life when I needed a little inspiration. But mainly, it's an excellent book with a story that lifts the spirit. Paul Coelho really knows how to create characters you can relate to and root for. It is beautifully written and definitely inspirational. And it's so short you can finish it in no time. I highly recommend it.
