Everything AND the kitchen sink.......2000-02-27
Before reading this book, I had very little knowledge what a mutual fund was, and had even less knowledge how to invest in them. This book explains step by step the different types of funds (small cap, mid cap, growth, blend, index, etc.) in a very easy-to-read format. It also recommends investment strategies for people at all stages of their life, and explains why certain funds may work better for people than others. After reading this book, I feel much more confident picking the right fund, and knowing how to react to market swings. A definite A+.
This is a very informative book........1999-09-10
I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in learning about mutual fund investing. Unlike other books on the subject I have read, the author details how loads and high expenses can devastate investment returns.

Book Description
The application of technology-based learning to employee development has spawned a multibillion dollar industry that continues to grow. For all its potential, though, e-learning is a complex issue that elicits a myriad of questions.
The E-Learning Question and Answer Book is a clear and concise guide that addresses common questions, as well as several that should be asked more often. Author Allan Henderson develops internal and client e-learning solutions for IBM. His crucial insights are supported by examples and case studies of how to (and how not to) launch and run an e-learning program. The E-Learning Question and Answer Book asks and answers more than 70 questions in all, including:
* What is e-learning? How can your company benefit? How much will it cost? * Do you need to scrap your classroom training? How do instructors adjust? * How do you set up e-learning systems? Will your IT structure support future growth? * Should you host your own e-learning system? Should you use a public system? * What are e-learning standards? Should you care about them?
Writing from experience, Henderson answers real business questions about e-learning.
Customer Reviews:
Still the best, concise intro to e-learning.......2006-06-19
Although this book is now a few years old, it's still 100% applicable to the e-learning situation in today's workplace.
This book is still the most consise and most readable quick overview of e-learning. A busy person like me will find that an investment of less than a couple of hours will give you a comprehensive overview, and let you really understand the issues and the tradeoffs at stake.
After reading this, I feel I could hold my own in a discussion with experts that have years of experience.
How to make the most from an online learning environment.......2004-02-06
Allan Henderson's E-LEARNING tells how to make the most from an online learning environment. From budgeting costs for e-learning to supporting employees who respond to e-learning opportunities, this is packed with interviews with experts plus examples of e-learning in sales, legal training and HR. An exciting survey.
a quick glance through various aspects of e-learning.......2003-03-17
This book is a quick glance through various aspects of e-learning. The coverage is not deep, but very broad. This book tells what is e-learning all about; provides specific case studies and interviews with e-learning leaders; presents economical analysis; shows how to apply e-learning to your business; and describes the IBM 4-tier learning model.
However, I do not agree with the author's assertion that "Learning is work, not entertainment". A good learning is always pleasurable and amusing.
This title is easy to read, you may wade through it once and then keep it as your personal e-learning FAQ reference book.
Great e-learning resource for novices and veterans.......2003-02-17
Al Henderson does an excellent job of demystifying e-learning by describing the many facets of corporate e-learning in a style that is both informative and enjoyable. This book will appeal to a wide audience, whether the reader is new to e-learning or has spent many years in the field. The book can be used a reference, an introduction, or a guide to the capabilities and possibilities that e-learning has to offer. The case studies are useful in linking concepts to practical application. Readers will enjoy the perspectives on the future of e-learning provided by industry thought leaders.
If your organization is considering e-learning, I would recommend reading this book and reviewing the concepts with your stakeholders to ensure your are pursuing e-learning for the right reasons, and are approaching it with realistic expectations.
Great practical guide to e-learning.......2003-02-08
Henderson's book on e-learning is one of the most straight-forward, honest looks at e-learning that I have seen in recent years. His Q&A format allows the reader to quickly jump to points of interest without spending time on topics that do not pertain. As a person who has had to deal with business training "gone wrong", Henderson's suggestions for a successful e-learning environment make a lot of sense. As other reviewers have pointed out, I believe that this book and the concepts it describes will translate over to academia readily. Universities and Junior colleges would greatly benefit from taking a step back and focusing on the basics. Schools that are currently attempting online classes could be improved if the took to heart the topics that Henderson describes. Since his experience at IBM has given him a first hand look at how online learning can be done right, companies and learning institutes would be wise to pay attention to what he has to say.
By focusing on technical details, real-life cost, and the practicality of using learning on the web, the reader is able to quickly get up to speed on all the issues that must be considered when online training is attempted.
The practical guide was very useful; it was so easy to find information quickly that I am recommending it to my company's training division.

..........2001-03-03
...What a convenient means of avoiding having to actually engage with Skrabanek's arguments. Would you say that most health promoters have a vested interest in establishing links between disease and all sorts of factors, since their jobs depended on it? Most medical researchers accept money from drug companies; indeed, many of the most vocal proponents of organic farming and opponents of genetically modified foods are themselves organic farmers, with an obvious vested economic interest in promoting it.
But none of that means you can airily dismiss their arguments out of hand. I would urge medical students, doctors, nurses, and the general public, to read this book: make up your own mind.
This is a tobacco industry funded propaganda piece........1998-05-24
The New Scientist (16 May 98 p5) points out that the fist author of this book is one of many 'consultant' projects funded by the tobacco industry to help spread confusion on the relationship between tobacco and health. Peter Skrabanek is reported to have written a number of reports for the tobacco industry. Caveat emptor. It may be a good read, but it is a subtle part of tobacco industy propaganda.
An unusual perspective on Medical Thinking.......1997-04-18
This delightful short monograph artfully skewers typical medical thinking with numerous examples of misdirected logic, hapless grandiosity, and short-sightedenss. Most of the examples are historical and real. They range from intransigence to accepting scientifically proven facts to embracing fads and charlatanism.
This book is a must for any serious medical scientist and would be of great use to journalists covering the medical profession. Medical students would also benefit from the authors' wry and insightful perspectives.

Included are some of the newest space photographs available, as well as many hands-on activities.
Customer Reviews:
Pretty Good.......2007-05-21
My son is obsessed with planets. This text is good and the artwork is nice. But a new edition needs to come out to explain that Pluto is no longer considered a planet. We have to read the book and then explain that to him afterwards.
Great Book!.......2007-05-07
I put this book in my 4 year old sons Easter Basket, and it was his favorite part of the basket. He loves it and has learned SO much from reading it. Not only is it a great book for this age, it teaches so much in a really easy format that is easy to retain. We love it.
good for kids just learning about the solar system.......2007-04-10
I have a 5 yr old that loves anything to do with space. I got older (adult) books from the library about the solar system and he learned tons of info. When we got this book he was excited but he didn't end up learning anything new. The book mostly talks about the relationship of the planets to the sun, their order, if they're hot or cold. They grouped the planets together stating which ones were hot or cold but didn't individually talk the planets other than saying you can see Mars early in the evening and Earth is the life planet.
Excellent Introduction for Younger Kids.......2007-03-14
This is an excellent overview of our solar system. It has great engaging illustrations with enough little "gems" to find on every page (Shrodinger's Cat for instance). This book introduces young children to a more detaialed look at our Solar System and with specific facts about each planet.
As other reviewers have noted, the book is thematic. The illustrations included allow the parent/ teacher to point out "real world" uses of scientific knowledge (math, physics, etc.). There is one page that includes "footnotes" for the captions on the oppostie page. This is useful in teaching younger children such concepts for later reading.
As a home educator to my 4 year old son, I found the craft ideas especially beneficial in that it provides you with specific details on how to enhance the learning of these concepts with a couple of simple hands-on projects using materials easily found around your house. This material is easily adapted for older kids, although it may not include enough specific details for the older end of the age spectrum.
3.5 yo loves it.......2007-02-11
my 3.5 yo daughter loves this book and has memorized almost every fact in the book!

Book Description
This distinctive monograph examines the dynamic rhetorical processes by which scientists shape, negotiate, and position their work within an interdisciplinary community. Author Ann M. Blakeslee studies the everyday rhetorical practices of a group of condensed matter theoretical physicists, and presents here the first substantial qualitative study of the planning and implementation of discursive practices by a group of scientists. This volume also represents one of the first studies to use situated cognition and learning theory to study how knowledge of a domain's discursive practices is acquired by newcomers.
Unlike previous studies of scientists' rhetorical practices, which have focused primarily on the finished or published texts, Blakeslee's involvement with the physicists as they engaged in the composing processes--from jotting down planning notes through publishing a scientific paper--suggests an alternative view of audience based on cooperative interaction between authors and their interlocutors. From this innovative perspective, functional knowledge of audiences comes only by entering into some community of practice, in which readers also become self-defining interlocutors and even participants in joint projects. Blakeslee's research follows the physicists' work into communal, interactive dynamics, looking at their overt attempts to get feedback from members of their audiences, what that feedback was, and how they responded to it.
This work addresses and extends a model for audience analysis that consists of two primary operations: getting to know and understand one's interlocutors, and determining how to reach and influence them. In doing so, it offers important insights into the dissemination of scientific information, and thus will be of great interest to scholars and students in the areas of rhetoric of science and technology, composition, rhetorical theory, and scientific writing.

Sincere, but limited.......2007-09-26
This book is quite limited because the experiencer of the story was deeply bound by common religious constraints, and his positionalities were respected by the provider of this experience. Of course, for some who are willing to go only a little beyond these common constraints, this account may be quite enough, thank you. All this having been said, the core message is simple and commendable. But as they say, "the devil is in the details". But one thing at a time, right. I'm sure this book has had and will have an expanding influence on many, because it's just what they need, when they need it.
Okay but not great.......2007-08-01
This book is better than Howard Storm's My Descent into Death but there still isn't as much substance as I would have liked. The quality of the printing is low, which makes it less pleasant to read than it would be with better printing and format. Unlike Storm's book though, it isn't just a lot of garden variety Christian preaching. It is certainly worth reading.
A Story You'll Never Forget.......2007-04-05
I remember reading about Dr. Richie's "Life after Death" experience in a 1960 Guidepost publication. It impresses me that a medical doctor would take the time to share his live altering experience. This is a good read that you won't forget. Other similiar accounts often seem incomplete. This is an upclose view of heaven from a doctors point of view.
Remarkable!.......2007-03-19
Return from Tomorrow
I finished this little book in one sitting, left with a sense of relief and hope. I do not doubt this man's testimony: About his "disembodiment", his indescribable roundtrip "flight" to Mississipi and back to Texas hovering over his dead body, guidance by Jesus to view post-earth realms that may have been revealed as hell and heaven. It is quite believable, even to the most analytical mind out there (like myself and my husband who is also a physician). The author is right: All the learned science in the world cannot quantify the magnitude of God's Love. Love is a choice of our free will. And I thank God He loves us enough to give us an opportunity to love as much as possible in this life, for it will transcend into the next realm of being after death. All other emotions outside of love, bitterness, regret, hate, lust, will also transcend into the next realm, but in the context for eternal damnation. So, what will be our choice in this limited life God has given us on earth? The answer is obvious.
Easy and pleasant read.......2007-03-14
I enjoyed this booked very much. I talked my husband into reading it. It's the first book he's read since high school and he enjoyed it as much as I did.
