      Book Description

There is a widespread belief that U.S. workers' education and skills are not adequate for the demands of jobs in the modern economy, resulting in a mismatch between the skills workers possess and the skills jobs require. Many believe the purported imbalance between the supply and demand in the market for human capital will become even more serious over time. But a closer examination of the issue reveals considerable ambiguity, underscoring the need for better data than are currently available. In fact, after a closer look at the limited and not completely consistent data used to research this issue, the very existence of a skills mismatch or skills shortage may be in doubt and is by no means as obvious as often asserted.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book on a misunderstood issue.......2006-01-26

This book gives an excellent overview on the so-called "skills gap" that purportedly plagues the US economy. The basic premise is that most of our economic problems, especially poverty and unemployment, can be attributed to a "skills bias" found in our post-industrial economy. Hence, we are supposed to believe that the way out of poverty, and hence the way to job security and unlimited economic growth and opportunity, is a highly educated workforce. In this book, Handel dismisses the skills gap in a highly systematic fashion. He raises more questions than gives answers, however. For the most part, the skills gap is a highly inflated problem. Writing Handel about his research, he agrees with me that the skills gap has become a powerful tool in shifting policy debates away from the real structural factors that cause poverty, unemployment, and declining economic competitiveness.

My biggest criticism of this book is that it does not make enough use of economic data in its arguments. Using economic data, like the high unemployment rates for college degree holders, and the decline of the IT jobs due to job outsourcing, would be highly illuminating and helpful in proving his thesis. However, Handel does mention the oversupply of college graduates, as evidenced by the shrinking differential between college and high school wages.

One powerful argument given by the author is that if there is a skills gap and if our education systems are failing us, then why did welfare mothers enjoy such keen employment prospects following the 1996 Welfare Reform Act? If there were a skills bias, one would expect that these women would have a tough time finding a job. However, employer surveys do not report much dissatisfaction with the skill levels found in Welfare-to-Work participants.

Likewise, worker attitudes show up as a more common complaint than do skills deficiencies. Handel attibutes the poor attitudes of workers to their poor wages, lack of promotional opportunities, and levels of insecurity found on the job. Pay your workers well and they will work hard, in other words.

Handel does a lot of justice to the education crisis debate in this book. He concludes that the current policy debates about the poor state of education in America are highly overstated, and that if anything Americans are too highly educated for what jobs require. Besides the mountain of emperical and statistical data, Handel employs a common sense arguement: given the much higher education credentials of the current generation, it is difficult to believe that the baby boomers have higher basic skills levels than the current generation. And indeed, literacy tests show that older people are not more proficient readers than those who were educated in the 1980s and 1990s.

Much of the "education crisis" is indeed propaganda used to rally the public against the education system.

Anyway, there are many good arguments in this book; I do not want to spoil it. The book is easy to read in one sitting, so I highly recommend it.

        Book Description

The Asian & Pacific Islander American Health Forum is a national advocacy organization dedicated to promoting policy, program, and research efforts for improving the health status of Asians and Pacific Islanders in the United States. This book was stimulated by the ideas and efforts of the Forum's National Research Advisory Council (NRAC). First convened in April 1989, the NRAC was formed in response to the poor quality of data, the paucity of health statistics, and the limited epidemiological and health services research on Asian and Pacific Islander Americans. With partial support from the Federal Office of Minority Health, the Asian & Pacific Islander American Health Forum selected three editors noted for their contributions and past compilations of scholarly work. The Forum also commissioned contributors with demonstrated experience and commitment to advancing the understanding of Asian and Pacific Islander American health in the service, research, and policy sectors. This book is a milestone effort reflecting the Forum's commitment to (a) community-based research; (b) building linkages and collaborations between academic researchers, service providers, and policy-makers; (c) advocating for institutional sanctions on improving data sources and research on Asian and Pacific Islander Americans; and (d) the dissemination of relevant information to diverse communities nationwide.

3 out of 5 stars More scholarly than entertaining.......2004-02-01

Interesting material but the treatment was much more academic and far less anecdotal than I would have liked. As others have noted, it is a slow read. The prose is very effective, but very dense and requires some effort. Perhaps it seemed more so as I had just finished several Stephen Ambrose books consecutively, and their flow is so effortless. Anyway, if I were writing a term paper this would be a natural. As someone who reads for entertainment as well as education, I found this book a little more work!!!

        5 out of 5 stars A Pragmatic Approach to a Complex Issue.......2002-12-23

I had the privelege of reading Brown's work in the eleventh grade. It was recomended to me by a former History proffesor at West Point who was my American Studies instructor.

While, as pointed out by some other reviews, the book is slow to read (such as other great authors such as Page Smith, and select works by Stephen Ambrose, it offers a vital and credible perspective into the society that we lost, in my opinion, when reconstruction began. I enjoyed the read (it took me two weeks) and found it enlightening and, while comprehensive and labyrinthian in references it is a populist perspectiveon the very elitist social environment in the pre-bellum South. Overall, I would reccomend this book to any intellectual, especially those young WASPs in the South who find their cultural influences constantly being bruised by hasty generalizations, who has an interest in the gentry class of the Old South. I would reccomend a parralel read with William Faulkner or other promenint Southern writers, such as Twain, as well.

1 out of 5 stars tokieyasu is doesn't know what she's talking about!.......2001-02-23

The first reviewer of this book is an obvious moron when it comes to the history of the War Between the States. The north did not attack the south because of slavery. Lincoln did not even mention slavery till the Gettysburg Address in 1863! It was fought over money, power and control....to save New Englands economic !*#! If you want to read a book about the causes of the war read "When In The Course Of Human Events" by Charles Adams.

4 out of 5 stars An Important Book on the Causes of the Civil War.......2000-02-16

Slavery was a major cause of the civil war, and yet most Southerners did not own slaves. This is a very telling fact and an interesting question. Southern Honor is an interesting look at the concept of Honor in the south and how it tied into the culture of the whole region and all classes. When Northerners attack the south for slavery, because of the concept of honor, it became not just an attack on the slave owners, or the rich southerners it was an attack on the whole region and culture. This is an important fact when looking at the causes of the civil war. I enjoyed reading this book, I learned a lot from it, and it helped to explain why many Southerners did what they did. This is an important book to read when studying the civil war or the history of the South.

        4 out of 5 stars Not what I expected.......1997-10-12

When I purchased this book, I expected a topical history of the ways of the Old South. WRONG! This work is an in-depth sociological study of the way honor (and other areas of person) were perceived and displayed in that lost era. Not only is the exposition a shock for those who mourn for the Old South, but gives personal insight into the behavior of the region today. Excellent book - slow reading

          Book Description

This Atlas provides a complete set of images of Local Group Galaxies (excluding the three for which identification atlases are already in print) and shows the most important objects, including many thousands of individual stars and interstellar objects.

It is unique in its coverage and format and provides a source of these fundamental data that will be used for many years. Researchers, students and even amateur astronomers will be able to use the Atlas to identify and study the various components of the nearly 30 important galaxies covered by the Atlas.

The objects identified on the more than 200 charts include variable stars, globular star clusters, open star clusters, stellar associations, emission regions, supernova remnants, planetary nebulae and dust clouds. Each galaxy is accompanied by an extensive bibliography.

3 out of 5 stars How do you rate an *Atlas*?.......2006-10-10

An Atlas is a difficult type of book to review--unless there are flaws! I am not a professional astronomer, but a serious amateur who has a professional scientific background. I bought this book for my own interest, and I am somewhat mystified by the number of errors I have uncovered in just a day or two of examination.

It appears that at one point in the publication of this atlas, that some of the electronic materials were inadvertantly lost due to a computer failure. This necessitated an effort to reconstruct some of the lost data, but it appears that there were still some unresolved problems. This is truly unfortunate, especially for an expensive reference such as this, to be plagued with flaws that became obvious even to a non-professional reviewer.

As an example, there is a single plate of the Fornax Spheroidal Dwarf Galaxy, with the globular clusters identified. Upon careful study, only one globular cluster (NGC 1049=GC3) is correctly identified; 2 oter objects identified as clusters are actually stars, and one is a galaxy.

There are numerous errors in the tables, where references to plate numbers are incorrect.

I have some serious reservations regards recommending this book to others. The print job is excellent, and the plates (really the heart of the book) are well reproduced; this, however , does not compensate for the errors contained therin.

The Local Group of galaxies consists of the Milky Way and all of its neighbors. The proximity of these galaxies allows for detailed studies of the processes that have led to their formation, structures, and evolution. In particular, studies of the Local Group can test predictions of structure formation that are based on dark energy and cold dark matter. This book presents a collection of review papers, written by world experts, on some of the most important aspects of Local Group Astrophysics. It is an invaluable resource for both professional researchers and graduate students in this cutting-edge area of research.

                    Book Description

The book reviews the most timely and interesting problems of stellar astrophysics, particularly those suitable for studies with the world's largest telescopes, and it can serve as an introduction to such studies. In particular it gives a comprehensive presentation of state-of-the-art research in stellar and planetary system formation, extra-solar planets, final stages of single and binary stellar evolution, and stellar populations in the Local Group of Galaxies, including observational techniques and technologies applicable to those important fields. The book also presents the most important unresolved problems of stellar astrophysics, intended to help identify directions for future research.

                        Book Description

It has become clearer which types of MMC systems are entering significant industrial use and what questions concerning their production and performance are of most pressing concern. In addition, intensive attention has been directed recently to metallic foams. These can offer attractive combinations of properties, including high specific stiffness and good energy-absorbing properties, particularly under compressive loading. For both, MMCs and metallic foams, there is intense interest in processing aspects, particularly in terms of cost minimisation consistent with retention of desirable microstructural features.

                            Book Description

The tragedy of love thwarted by fate has always intrigued writers.  In the sixteenth century, William Shakespeare took this theme and fashioned one of the world's great plays: Romeo And Juliet.  In our own time, Shakespeare's drama has been used as a basis for the overwhelmingly successful musical play West Side Story.  Though one of these works is set among the nobility of Verona, and the other among immigrant families of New York's West Side, both tell the story of the plight of young star-crossed" lovers.

As Norris Houghton writes in his introduction: "What we see is that all four young people strive to consummate the happiness at the threshold on which they stand and which they have tasted so briefly.  All four are deprived of the opportunity to do so, the Renaissance couple by the caprice of fate, today's youngsters by the prejudice and hatred engendered around them....

"Poets and playwrights will continue to write of youthful lovers whom fate drives into and out of each other's lives.  The spectacle will always trouble and move us, even as the two dramas in this volume do today."

I liked the movie. I admit, yes this teen, has a soundtrack of west side story. I found the movie very funny when the guys where singing and dancing but admittedly I cried at the end. This story was very good.

5 out of 5 stars A logical pairing of 2 great theatrical works.......2002-12-06

This is two books in one: the text of William Shakespeare's tragedy "Romeo and Juliet" and the text of "West Side Story," the 20th century musical with a book by Arthur Laurents and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim. The book also includes an introduction by Norris Houghton, who notes, among other things, that WSS is based on R&J. Each text tells the story of a love affair between a young woman and a young man who are caught between warring factions.

I find it stimulating and useful to have these two pieces, linked in theme but separated by centuries, together in one volume. Each is a great text on its own, but having them together may help the reader to see each piece in a different light. One of the things I find most striking as one moves from R&J to WSS is how the latter text adds the element of ethnic tension to the fundamental story of "star-crossed lovers."

R&J is more than just a classic piece of literature; it's also a touchstone of pop culture (hey, it's even been incorporated into a "Brady Bunch" episode!). Despite the passage of centuries, I find Shakespeare's portrayal of the joy and pain of forbidden love to remain relevant and compelling. And R&J holds up as a reader's text, even with the availability of filmed versions. I think that WSS, being a musical play, naturally loses some impact as a text strictly on the page, but nevertheless I found it a rewarding reader's text also. One might try listening to a CD of WSS's songs as an accompaniment to reading the text.

To supplement WSS's portrayal of urban Puerto Ricans, I recommend that interested readers seek out some writings by "Nuyorican" authors; to start with, try Roberto Santiago's illuminating anthology "Boricuas: Influential Puerto Rican Writings."

                            Romeo & Juliet

Romeo and Juliet is written by William Shakespeare, it contains lots of old English(reason why I find it difficult to read it). It is a very tragic story that took place in Old Verona, Italy. As all tragic stories, it has a tragic heroe (person who suffers a big problem as a result of his deffects), in this case there are two tragic heroes, Romeo and Juliet. They died because they didn't know how to control their inapproppriated love, by inapproppriated I mean that their love couldn't be permited because their familes hated each other more than death . The story has been adapted into many stories, plays, Etc. The best character is the Nurse. The only one who expresses her feellings without hidding them.

This book was written by William Shakespeare and it has the old language. Romeo and Juliet is a tragic story, interesting, full of problems and the story is attractive. The story is about 2 families that are in a feud. The families are Capulet and Montague. Romeo Montague is a boy who is very romantic. He falls in love with Juliet Capulet. Romeo tries to be with Juliet and Juliet too but because of the feud they can't be together. The pair have friends who help them. Many deaths are involved in the story. After the problems they plan to be together. In the end the pair dies because of love.

Author of the New York Times bestselling Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter series, Laurell K. In this, her debut novel, her rich imagination spreads its wings to fly-in a tale of a woman known as sorcerer, prophet, and enchantress...

This was a fast moving interesting book. However the termology is definately for those who understand science fiction. It also left me wanting to know more at the end. I am surprised there wasn't a second nightseer novel published.

this was laurell's very first novel... i could definitely tell it was her writing. the stubborn fighting woman who tries to save everyone and is magical.. it was ok but lacked the originality her other books have, well, that's what i thought at least.

                                              4 out of 5 stars The Best I've Read in a While.......2007-02-18

I read this book back when I started with LKH. I fell in love and thought I was missing something. The book, while excellent, does feel unfinished. It's the middle of a story, with much happening before and hints of what's going to happen later. I love the interaction between Keleios and Lothor. A part of me wants this story to be finished and told in it's entirety that it was hinted on in the book, but a part of me is afraid because of the direction that LKH's writing has taken in recent novels.

4 out of 5 stars Hamilton does it again!.......2006-09-30

As much as I love the Merry Gentry and Anita Blake series, I truly wish Ms. Hamilton would go back to her debut Novel "NIGHTSEER" and finish what she started. As noted by another reviewer a prequel would be nice, but a few sequels would be even better. There is so much left standing at the end of this novel that I keep watching for her to write a sequel. The abrupt ending makes you think there is already another book out there waiting to be picked up. As much as I enjoyed this book, I really don't believe I would have read it if I had realized ahead of time how unfinished it is. Hopefully Ms. Hamilton will remember and return to her beginnings.

                                              4 out of 5 stars Excellent story.......2006-07-12

Laurell K. Hamilton's first effort is every bit as well-written and entertaining as her later works. Keleois Incantare is a captivating, strongwilled herione and the fast paced plotline leaves no time for boredom while allowing for the building of well-defined characters whom you can't help but empathize with. My only complaint (and it seems to be a common one) is the amount of loose ends left at the end of the book. A sequel is easy to envision, and possibly a prequel is well, and if one or the other (particularly the sequel) ever appeared I would be quick to snatch it up. All in all, a fantastic read and well worth buying.
