    Book Description

A contemporary survival guide for future managers, this #1 “how-to” book on supervision explores the basic principles of management—planning, organizing, staffing, leading, and controlling people and operations—with a strong emphasis on their application to real on-the-job situations. Avoiding confusing jargon, it talks to learners one supervisor to another—discussing the specific tools of supervision in detail (explaining which tool is right for each task), and focusing on the development of strong interpersonal skills and on supervising a diverse workforce and teams. It comes completely updated with new examples and fresh insight into a variety of dynamic issues affecting management today. Examples are taken from well-known U.S. and international companies such as General Electric, Honda America, Harley-Davidson, Motorola, GM, Bell South, and Merrill Lynch. For anyone contemplating a career in management.

4 out of 5 stars This authors clinical experstise is unrivaled........1999-01-24

As a front line supervisor with twenty years experiance under my belt I am very impressed with the authors ability to teach several new and effective people skills in every chapter. I have enjoyed several management texts in the past dozen years and found valuable tools in each and everyone. Whether it was "Reinventing the Warehouse" or "The Goal" these large scope versions of the self help books of the seventies all seem to fall victim to the same flaw as thier predacessors. While technically adept, they all start with the assumption the clay of human flesh with has no self determination. No sense of "Natural Law" that is searching for expression in a positive direction. When one of these very talented authors reaches outside of thier technical area and embraces a more holistic approach they will strike gold. Maybe Plunkett is just the guy to do it. in any case it was a superb effort, for what it was.

This is the best Astronomy text that I have ever seen. It is filled with colorful photos and diagrams, and delves into the more interesting aspects of astronomy. A must for any Astronomy teacher, student, or amateur astronomer. It's also included with a great CD that has planetarium software on it.

This book reviews the current state of knowledge of the atmospheres of the giant gaseous planets: Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. The current theories of their formation are reviewed and their recently observed temperature, composition and cloud structures are contrasted and compared with simple thermodynamic, radiative transfer and dynamical models. The instruments and techniques that have been used to remotely measure their atmospheric properties are also reviewed, and the likely development of outer planet observations over the next two decades is outlined.

                          Book Description

Drs. Brandt and Chapman provide a comprehensive introduction to comets by consolidating in one text information from the fields of history, physics, astronomy, and space science. Comets have intrigued man since ancient times, when astronomical phenomena were interpreted as evidence of divine intervention in human affairs. Today, attention to the behaviour of comets remains strong, although interest is now more specific than theological. Aided by increased technology, many space scientists look to the return of Halley's Comet in 1985–6 with the expectation that spacecraft might be sent to intercept the comet and take measurements in situ. The authors trace the historical development of investigations into the nature of comets, in addition to presenting an up-to-date account of cometary research.

                                    Book Description

On the night of December 18, 1912, a packed meeting of the Geological Society of London listened to Charles Dawson, a rural lawyer and an amateur geologist, make an exciting announcement: he had found evolution's missing link in an old gravel pit near Piltdown Common. Together with Arthur
Smith Woodward, Keeper of Geology at the British Museum and a noted authority on prehistoric archaeology, Dawson had discovered the shattered remnants of a thick, human-like skull together with a simian jaw--the fossils of a strange creature halfway between apes and human beings. Though debates
raged over reconstructing Piltdown Man from these remains, few doubted their authenticity--and it was not until forty years later that further tests proved they were an elaborate fake.
Written by anthropologist Frank Spencer, Piltdown tells the story of this incredible hoax, the greatest forgery in the history of modern science. Spencer begins by taking us back to the debates in Edwardian Britain over the antiquity of Homo sapiens and the public excitement over the search
for the missing link between apes and human beings. He recounts Dawson's initial "discovery" of the shattered skull, the further dramatic finds made with Woodward in the midst of the furious scientific debate over Piltdown Man, and the great public argument between Woodward and Arthur Keith over
the reconstruction of the head (Keith, an anatomist and Conservator of the Hunterian Museum of the Royal College of Surgeons, won fame by promoting his own theory of a very human-like version of the Piltdown skull). Spencer also traces the increasing confusion and doubt over Piltdown Man as later
archaeological discoveries were made in Africa and China: the Piltdown Man didn't seem to fit the emerging picture of human evolution, and an ever-larger number of scientists claimed that the jaw did not belong with the skull. Finally, he captures the dramatic uncovering of the hoax, closely
following anthropologist Joseph Weiner's fascinating investigation in 1953. Weiner--troubled by the inconsistencies of Piltdown Man--revealed that the remains consisted of a modern human skull and the jaw of an orangutan, treated with chemicals to simulate great age and planted at the Piltdown
                                    site.
Yet the question of who perpetrated the forgery has remained to the present day. Certainly Dawson, a rural solicitor who craved a great scientific reputation, was intimately involved. But who provided the tremendous expertise behind the hoax, and why would such a learned authority risk his
career on a highly public fake? Was it Woodward, the great archaeologist most closely associated with the find? Keith, the prominent anatomist? Or was it Teilhard de Chardin, the French priest who found a critical tooth at the site? Spencer draws on original documents from the archives of the
British Museum and other sources to identify the missing conspirator, in a startling and convincing revelation. Compelling and authoritative, Piltdown offers a gripping account of this great hoax and the final word on one of the deepest mysteries of modern science.

In 1912, Cahrles Dawson and Arthur Smith Woodward "discovered" what was then claimed to be the missing link in human evolution at site known as Piltdown. What follows represents the unravelling of one of the greatest scientific forgery the world had ever seen.

Spencer's work represents first the challenge to explain how Piltdown Man (eoanthropos dawsoni) came to be regarded as the missing link in human evolution. Then, the challenge came to be how the scientific community held onto Piltdown Man despite the conflicting scientific evidence found in other parts of the globe. Finally, how the investigation of Weiner, Le Gros Clark and Oakley in 1953 exposed the fact that Piltdown Man was an elaborate and meticulous fraud.

From there, Spencer then explores the suspects and possible motives of the suspects of this most elaborate forgery. Spencer runs the gamut of suspects before indicating his belief in the collaborative efforts of Charles Dawson and Arthur Kent. Like any good detective, Spencer employs the requirement that the perpetrator(s) of this fraud must have had both motive and opportunity. Unfortunately we will likely never know the true identities of the perpetrators.

In the end, the invesitgation in 1953 revealed that the Piltdown skull was nothing more than a human skull and an unrelated lower jawbone of an ape. The fact that in 1912, this discovery was heralded in the scientific community as the missing link reflects both on the sophistication of the forgeries and the desire by many to have the mssing link be found in England. Spencer explains all with great scientific detail coupled with a touch of panache. All in all, highly enjoyable.

In Oryx and Crake, a science fiction novel that is more Swift than Heinlein, more cautionary tale than "fictional science" (no flying cars here), Margaret Atwood depicts a near-future world that turns from the merely horrible to the horrific, from a fool's paradise to a bio-wasteland. Snowman (a man once known as Jimmy) sleeps in a tree and just might be the only human left on our devastated planet. He is not entirely alone, however, as he considers himself the shepherd of a group of experimental, human-like creatures called the Children of Crake. As he scavenges and tends to his insect bites, Snowman recalls in flashbacks how the world fell apart.

While the story begins with a rather ponderous set-up of what has become a clichéd landscape of the human endgame, littered with smashed computers and abandoned buildings, it takes on life when Snowman recalls his boyhood meeting with his best friend Crake: "Crake had a thing about him even then.... He generated awe ... in his dark laconic clothing." A dangerous genius, Crake is the book's most intriguing character. Crake and Jimmy live with all the other smart, rich people in the Compounds--gated company towns owned by biotech corporations. (Ordinary folks are kept outside the gates in the chaotic "pleeblands.") Meanwhile, beautiful Oryx, raised as a child prostitute in Southeast Asia, finds her way to the West and meets Crake and Jimmy, setting up an inevitable love triangle. Eventually Crake's experiments in bioengineering cause humanity's shockingly quick demise (with uncanny echoes of SARS, ebola, and mad cow disease), leaving Snowman to try to pick up the pieces. There are a few speed bumps along the way, including some clunky dialogue and heavy-handed symbols such as Snowman's broken watch, but once the bleak narrative gets moving, as Snowman sets out in search of the laboratory that seeded the world's destruction, it clips along at a good pace, with a healthy dose of wry humor. --Mark Frutkin, Amazon.ca

                                          Book Description

With the same stunning blend of prophecy and social satire she brought to her classic The Handmaid’s Tale, Margaret Atwood gives us a keenly prescient novel about the future of humanity—and its present.

Humanity here equals Snowman, and in Snowman’s recollections Atwood re-creates a time much like our own, when a boy named Jimmy loved an elusive, damaged girl called Oryx and a sardonic genius called Crake. But now Snowman is alone, and as we learn why we also learn about a world that could become ours one day.

A stunning and provocative new novel by the internationally celebrated author of The Blind Assassin, winner of the Booker Prize.

Margaret Atwood's new novel is so utterly compelling, so prescient, so relevant, so terrifyingly-all-too-likely-to-be-true, that readers may find their view of the world forever changed after reading it.

The narrator of Atwood's riveting novel calls himself Snowman. When the story opens, he is sleeping in a tree, wearing an old bedsheet, mourning the loss of his beloved Oryx and his best friend Crake, and slowly starving to death. He searches for supplies in a wasteland where insects proliferate and pigoons and wolvogs ravage the pleeblands, where ordinary people once lived, and the Compounds that sheltered the extraordinary. As he tries to piece together what has taken place, the narrative shifts to decades earlier. How did everything fall apart so quickly? Why is he left with nothing but his haunting memories? Alone except for the green-eyed Children of Crake, who think of him as a kind of monster, he explores the answers to these questions in the double journey he takes—into his own past, and back to Crake's high-tech bubble-dome, where the Paradice Project unfolded and the world came to grief.

With breathtaking command of her shocking material, and with her customary sharp wit and dark humour, Atwood projects us into an outlandish yet wholly believable realm populated by characters who will continue to inhabit our dreams long after the last chapter. This is Margaret Atwood at the absolute peak of her powers.

This is one of the best books I have read in a long time. The characters are amazing and I found myself thinking about the book days after I finished reading it. It is so interesting, and I love how it is set into the future, but it is vague enough to not give the reader the year, or generation that it is set in. Read this book!!!

                                          5 out of 5 stars Must read........2007-09-18

Go out and read this now. This book is fabulous. The writing is superb and got me to read other Atwood, which I would recommend of anyone interested in good, strong literature. It's got a futuristic theme which is done incredibly well and the characters are extremely fun to read.

                                          A must read.

3 out of 5 stars Readable but not great.......2007-09-15

The first 120 pages or so of this book really dragged and were vague. When I came to understand why the author was named Snowman things got better. As more and more of the story develops things become clearer, but I was irritated by having to slog through the beginning of the book without knowing what was going on. The book got more and more implausible and I was sick of it by the end. While some of the ideas were engaging I didn't really like the execution of this book. I loved The Handmaid's Tale, enjoyed much of Lady Oracle, and enjoyed less of this book. I think I've had it with Margaret Atwood.

                                          5 out of 5 stars Hauntingly Insightful.......2007-09-10

The best thing about Atwood is her ability to look at current trends and take them to their logical conclusion. Is it so impossible to imagine, in our world of reality-obsessed TV, that there won't one day be reality TV shows based around a person commiting suicide? Just turn on 'Intervention' or 'Cheaters' to see our current obsession with the train-wrecks of other peoples' lives.

                                          4 out of 5 stars Huh.......2007-08-28

I liked this book, but it did take a bit. It's an interesting view point to the end of the world as we know it. I like how we are placed in a world where things have clearly gone wrong yet there is no explanation... it just is. As I said, very interesting but slow at first, so give it a bit.

I can't say I enjoyed this story, since so much of it was brutal and ugly, but I did enjoy many parts of it along the way. It raises a legitimate question: Who is in charge of the whole of human culture? Can anybody control the march of history? Crake believes our destruction is written in our genes, and we were doomed the day we invented art. The global economy must inevitably collapse, and this story pulls the Band-Aid off relatively quickly. Snowman, the narrator, watches more than six billion people die overnight. Afterward, he has plenty of time to think about how little he knew about everyone in his life: his mother, his father, his best friend Crake, and his lover Oryx all turned out to be relative strangers, with secret histories and hidden motives. If educated, healthy people can't manage basic relationships, it comes as no surprise that the administration of a global economy is beyond anyone's control.

On the road to hell, or the road through hell, Snowman invents words and plays with language. He finds plenty of material to illustrate the flaws of humans. Still, as flawed as humans were, the humanoid species selected to replace Homo sapiens is engineered to perfection and mind-numbingly dull. Snowman's knowledge prevents him from entering their innocent culture, and all his memories and cleverness are wasted without anyone to talk to. I didn't necessarily like Snowman, or Crake or Oryx, or anyone in the entire book, but I'm glad I met them, and I won't soon forget them.

4 out of 5 stars "The elimination of one generation means game over forever.".......2005-09-02

Set sometime in the future, this post-apocalyptic novel takes scientific research in the hands of madmen to its logical and frightening conclusion. Inspiring readers to pay more attention to the world around them, Atwood offers cautionary notes about the environment, bioengineering, the sacrifice of civil liberties, and the possible loss of those human values which make life more than just a physical experience. As the novel opens, some catastrophe has occurred, effectively wiping out all human life.

Snowman (known as Jimmy in his youth) is the lone survivor, a man on the verge of starvation in this desolate new world, now living in a tree for protection against "wolvogs" (part dog, part wolf) and serving as the protector of a bioengineered strain of humanoid children. As Atwood alternates between the unexplained disaster in which Snowman finds himself at the outset of the novel and flashbacks to his youth and early adulthood, which he shared with his best friend Crake, she brings a dismal future-world to life. Not surprisingly, Oryx, Snowman's love, has been involved in the devastation, as has Crake, though Atwood saves till the conclusion an explanation of the catastrophe, something which may frustrate some readers.

Because we never see Jimmy/Snowman engaging in the kind of personal conflict which would have led to such a grand-scale disaster, we never really experience the intense reader involvement which might have developed from observing such a conflict. Most of the real conflict, in fact, takes place in the past and is revealed only in flashbacks. Snowman's primary conflict is his final, lonely battle with the environment to stay alive, something which advances the message at the expense of dramatic tension. Characters also are subordinated to message. We know only as much about Jimmy/Snowman as we need to know in order to empathize with him in his predicament as possibly the last man on earth. Crake is an anti-hero, remote and distanced, and Oryx remains a mystery.

Despite its grim subject and cautionary message, the novel has a great deal of humor. With trenchant satire, Atwood pokes fun at aspects of our contemporary lives carried to extremes. Not hard science fiction, the novel is a vividly described picture of science and scientists run amok in a society which has failed in its guardianship of the environment and of life itself. More light-hearted than terrifying, and more allegorical than heart-stopping, the novel carries an environmental message of great relevance. Mary Whipple
