Good summary of management techniques and principles.......1999-02-10
We've been using this book as our text in an Engineering Management class at Santa Clara University. Brown provides a good survey of management techniques such as Theory X and Theory Y and principles such as the Peter Principle, Parkinson's Law, and Deming's 14 obligations of management.
Focusing primarily on the challenges of managing technical professionals, the author projects Theory Y into the age of flat flexible organizations. His discussions of informal organizations and concepts such as authentic (bottom-up) authority are interesting, but he seems to avoid anecdotal reasoning. This seems to be deliberate, but sometimes leads to redundant writing with lots of opinions rather than real life examples.
If the author revises this book by adding more examples to illustrate his points, I might change my rating to 5 stars.

Customer Reviews:
Worst Review Book Ever!.......2004-02-05
Please do not buy this. I bought it and I am absolutley disgusted at the quality of this book. Many questions appear to have been modified from previous editions however the answers no longer corelate with the questions. Spelling mistakes are everwhere and "renal cell carcinoma" is misspelled as "anal cell carcinoma" in more than one location! Many other spelling mistakes make studying from this book a very confusing procedure...

Ancient and Obsolete.......2007-04-23
The beauty of general relativity (GR) lies in the connection it provides between geometry and physics. Weinberg's algebraic approach completely obscures this connection. Instead Weinberg teaches how to crank through complex calculations without any insight or geometric intuition. It is a fairly good book when compared to Misner-Thorne-Wheeler (another ancient text). However, by modern standards, Weinberg's book leaves much to be desired. Having been published in 1972, the book lacks modern examples in cosmology and quantum gravity. It also lacks a proper introduction to differential geometry and makes no mention of topology or other mathematical ideas prevalent in current GR research. In the 35 years since its publication, it has been surpassed by many much better books. For an excellent introduction to GR, read Carroll's book. For a more rigorous study of GR read Wald's book. For an easy introduction to GR, read Schutz's book.
Unique,Idiosyncratic Approach.......2006-09-15
Flashback to 1979.I Purchased Weinberg's Gravitation book and
Misner,Thorne, Wheeler's Gravitation book, simultaneously. Back then it took four weeks to get hold of a book by mail. The waiting made it all the more special when the books finally arrived. I still have those same two worn copies. Still re-read each. Sure, they are different viewpoints of General Relativity.
But, how greatly they both enrich the world. Together, those two
books started a pedagogic revolution. Weinberg has no
equal, cherish this book. Cherish MTW, also.
A great book by a great physicist.......2006-04-09
This is the best book written on general relativity, and I have read or at least looked at nearly every one of them. It is better than Wald's book because Steven Weinberg is a better physicist than Robert Wald. The only people who will not be pleased with it are those mathematicians who are looking to physics for elegant mathematics and not for physical insight.
A virtue of this book is that so far as I can see Weinberg has thought through general relativity for himself, and he has worked through all of the derivations himself - certainly the ones that I have checked - rather than quoting others.
This is not always the case for books in physics. Weinberg is careful, and I have yet to find an error in the book.
Superlative.......2004-12-14
Weinberg's writing is fantastic--direct, precise, and inspiring. His minimalist yet comprehensive approach, basing GR on nothing but the absolute necessities is beautiful. Virtually every word in the book is necessary and sufficient.
For GR, Weinberg's book is first among equals. Other reviews have critiqued his mathematics as old (Einstein's methods)--so what? It's easier and centerpieces the physics. Weinberg does well at making the complex as simple as can be reasonably made, a mark of a great expositor.
Old book that is hostile to the spirt of G.R........2004-12-08
There was a time when this book was probably very authoritative and useful (though I can't see myself preferring it over Hawking and Ellis, even then). Put it out of your mind: that time is gone. There are a slew of much better, much more modern books out there. Furthermore, this book is written from a perspective that attempts to filter a huge chunk of the geometry out of G.R., sullying a lot of the beauty of Einstein's central idea. If you are interested in cosmology, you can do a lot better looking at Hawking and Ellis, or one of the more recent books that will, due to their newness, emphasize the numerous advances in cosmology since the 70s. If you are interested in Relativity, PLEASE look at Schutze (beginner) or at Wald (graduate). Don't waste time and energy on this book.
That being said, there are some interesting advanced topics here, and a few things that I haven't seen elsewhere. This can be a useful reference for a researching relativist.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent introduction to the subject.......2003-07-18
Berry's book is definately one of the more accessible yet rigourous treatments of this fascinating subject.
It assumes a sound knowledge of Special Relativity and a good command of Calculus, Differential Equations and Vector Algebra, but without the onerous use of tensors and as such it is a serious book for the Physics student rather than a popular presentation of science.
All of the fundamentals are covered here: an outline of cosmography, distance and velocity measurements, the rationale for General Relativity based on a critical assessment of the shortcomings of both the Newtonian model and Special Relativity, the Principle of Equivalence, Curved Space-time, geodesics, Gravitational Waves, Black holes, and Cosmic models.
The author makes excellent use of diagrams and the discussion of the physical principles is balanced by a careful presentation of the mathematics.
A highly recommended book!
Excellent but dense........2001-01-06
This was an excellent book. We used it in my intro course for Astrophysics. This book is not a "pop-culture" overview of the expanding universe, but rather explores the mathematical and physical explanation for the structure and state of the universe. Expect to spend a fair bit of time on each page, and each paragraph. Though straight forward writing and math, the ideas and implications are mind bending.
It is quite difficult to think on the scale of the universe, but this book boils it down to the relevant observations we can make and the equations that might explain them.
This became my Cosmological Bible.

Book Description
“Detective Jane Bauer is a most welcome addition to the ranks of fictional cops.”
–Peter Robinson
When NYPD detective Jane Bauer and her team check in for their new assignment, they reopen a cold case that’s a real killer. Ten years earlier, police responding to a spate of late-night 911 calls from Greenwich Village discovered a young African American undercover cop, Micah Anthony, shot dead on Waverly Place. The killer left no clues, and the murder remains an inscrutable mystery . . . except for two things: Anthony had infiltrated a lucrative gun-trading operation in the city, and it seemed likely that he knew and trusted the killer.
So begins an investigation that leads Jane from Village brownstones to middle-class Queens, from wealthy Sutton Place to sinister subway tunnels, as a mastermind of murder resumes operations–and every path is mined with menace.
“Harris knows a lot about cops and a lot about women and she knows how to plot a good mystery.”
–Stephen Greenleaf
Customer Reviews:
Murder in Greenwich Village by Lee Harris.......2007-07-29
The ordering process from Amazon is very easy. My shipment of books arrived sooner than I expected them. I apprecate the ease of finding the books I am looking for with Amazon. The special discount I received on the day of ordering was a nice surprise. Thank you.
A Great Read...........2006-08-06
What can I say? I picked this book up and didn't want to put it down until the very last page!! This third volume in the Jane Bauer series is a terrific police procedural while giving us further insight into our heroine. Not only did I find the story line suspenseful, but greatly appreciated the fact that Ms. Harris left no threads dangling by completing, down to the last character, the cold case that Jane's squad was working. (I have found too many "best-selling authors" ignoring their very own people and plots and appear to be in a rush to the end-NOT IN THIS BOOK).
Jane's loving relationship with Hack receives the exact amount of attention without going overboard (JMHO) and now they have moved to a place where the "moralists" out there will be happier (maybe?). Personally, until I read the prior reviews, I never gave it a thought.
Again, I must thank Ms. Harris for a terrific read and am looking forward to number 4 in this series!!! Susan
Slow, confusing, boring...........2006-07-06
I found this book extremely hard to follow. I set it down for days, picked it up read a few words and went on with my life. And, has anyone else noticed that Jane and Christine Bennett (from the author's other series) are basically the same woman? I too was bothered by her blase attitude toward sleeping with a married man.
Mysterylover,fromdownunder.......2006-05-10
I really enjoyed this third book in the Manhattan Mystery series, but then I have always enjoyed Lee Harris's books (admitably some more than others)
I felt that Detective Jane Bauer's relationship with her team has evolved more with each book, this time Sean MacHovec redeemed himself with his Online research and seemed to be less of a sleeze.
In this book there is more background to Jane's longterm romance and Jane's hesitation in committing to Hack. I certainly can't wait for the next episode to see where this leads.
Difficult to Follow.......2006-04-22
I really enjoy this series, but I found this installment very difficult to follow. Perhaps it's because, for a cold case, there were an awful lot of characters, and it was hard to keep them all straight. Even by the end of the book, I wasn't sure who some of the major players were.
I also really wish the author would allow Jane to dump Hack or, better yet, kill him off. Running around for 10 years with a married man behind his wife's back, sneaking off to Paris, making phone calls on a phone card, etc. all make an otherwise strong character look stupid and weak. Hack is an annoyance who adds nothing to the stories, so I'm sure I'd enjoy this series much more, and be able to rate it much higher, if he was no longer around.
