Use with caution.......2003-03-29

This book is an edited collection of readings, most of which pertain to human resource management (HRM). A strength of the book is that it is structured along the lines of an HRM process model, including major sections on inputs (external and internal contexts of HRM), processes (classic HRM functions), and outcomes (employee attitudes, entry, turnover, and performance). Not a bad way for students to think of HRM. Whereas the editors suggest the book can serve as a stand-alone text for an HRM course, I do not recommend that (at least not for undergraduate HRM students) because it lacks some of the technical detail a stand-alone HRM text requires, and it contains no exercises, learning aids, etc. It is better suited as a supplemental readings text, but should be applied with caution because some of the chapters are non-academic or poorly written. Furthermore, many of the chapters are rife with poor grammar, missing punctuation, and so forth, such that they represent poor exemplars of proper writing for college students (the editors clearly laid down on this aspect of the book).

Good as a quick refresher.......2003-07-04

I used this book as a quick revision. To tell you the truth, I don't think the questions represent the USMLE type, but rather they can be used as a quick refresher for the basic facts.

Many of the questions are VERY easy, which give you sometimes false reassurance that you'll pass any exam without studying!

Unfortunately, this book has many questions with the options like (All of the above) or (None of the above), which are not used in the USMLE-type questions.

The number options in each question is 4 i.e. a, b, c, and d.

There are many questions without proper explanation.

There are few questions with diagrams or pictures.

I think the questions can also be used in a "quiz" in a medical curriculum (if there is such a quiz).

Chapters include:
Medical Qualifying Exams, Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, General microbiology and immunology, Pathology, Pharmacology, Public health and community medicine, and Behavioral sciences.

Interesting..........2007-09-26

The book was not an easy read because it was difficult to keep up with sometimes as it jumped from past to present often. It was interesting however to hear her story of the Japanese persecution. The book was appealing because of its story line and the history behind it. Not too often do people hear about the Japanese persecution, but this book explains it straight from Naomi who experienced it first hand. I personally didn't enjoy reading it, but it did tell a good story about the history.

The book "Obason" was not an easy read, but the more I read into it, the easier it got. I learned history from this book and a lesson. From the beginning of the book, I had started out learning something new. Everyone knows about what happened to the Jews by the Germans, but I did not know what happened to the Japanese in our own land, this amazed me. From all the things that Naomi and her family went through, they never gave up, they were always looking for something better. Naomi's silence in the beginning of the novel was to her like her protection, it kept her safe. She learned the older that she got, that for something better to happen she must grow up and not hide in silence for her life. Seeing Naomi's strength of how she got through all this gives the lesson, to not be quiet and sit back if you want something to come out of something. This book has history and a lesson. History and a lesson is somethings that interests a lot of readers and if thats what your looking for, "Obason" will get you that.

Strong, but takes some getting used to.......2007-09-06

Joy Kogawa's Obasan is spectacularly written. Kogawa is a master of writing and with it creates a seamless plot. Using a wide span of literary devices (foreshadowing, symbolism, etc), she weaves the story of a couple generations of Japanese Canadians during the years following the attacks on Pearl Harbor. The narrator is a child for much of the story, and we, as readers, delve to great depths within her character, mind and past. Other characters are equally well-portrayed; thus, this book has a sense of great capacity, large expanse, both of experience and emotions. Flawlessly, brilliantly written, Obasan stirs the mind and the heart. That being said, if one has little knowledge of the surrounding events in history or simply finds it difficult to connect with the narrator and her overcome, however, with a little effort and further reading.

Best Teacher Ever - Almost the Best Book.......2007-09-05

I was given the wonderful oppurtunity to read this book this summer by my amazing, gracious, super awesome teacher. She's the greatest teacher in the world. There is NO better teacher. She has a doctorate in education and is so smart it's really intimidating. I'm honestly terrified to speak during class for fear of being called out on my ignorance. But I am, and forever will be, grateful for her and her reading requirements.
Obasan was a very interesting read. The juxtaposition of Aunt Emily's masculine, aggressive narration against Naomi's elegant, florid prose makes for a subtly dynamic work. Joy Kogawa expertly weaves the tragic and beautiful into a comforting blanket that surrounds you, and stays with you. Naomi's silent strength against the prejudices of an entire nation speak more than words can allow. The book is a wry twist on the common "stranger in a strange land" model but her deft characterization and poignant imagery make for a memorable read.

Interesting but a tough read.......2007-09-05

Obasan is not a easy read by no imagination. I did find it interesting in hearing a first person account of the bombings of Japan. This book is also interesting because we all know about the Holocaust and the misery the Jewish people faced, but the Japanese persecution is not so widely known. It is detailed in the emotional challenges faced when the family is separated. Kogawa does an excellent job in writing the book. The change in language between narrators is excellent. The book is a tough read because it does skip around and there are two narrators but if you are interested in the history of the American Japanese and Canadian Japanese during World War 2, this is the book for you. I am not a heavy reader and i did not exactly enjoy the book but I could easily understand why someone else would enjoy it, therefore I gave it a three star rating.
