        Book Description

Mars has long been believed to have been cold, dead and dry for aeons, but there is now striking new proof that not only was Mars a relatively warm and wet place in geologically recent times, but that even today there are vast reserves of water frozen beneath the planet’s surface. As well as casting fascinating new insights into Mars’ past, this discovery is also forcing a complete rethink about the mechanisms of global planetary change and the possibility that there is microbial life on Mars.

David Harland considers the issue of life on Mars in parallel with the origin of life on Earth. At the time the Viking instruments were designed, it was thought that all terrestrial life ultimately derived its energy from sunlight, and that the earliest form of life was the cyanobacteria with chlorophyll for photosynthesis. It was assumed the same would be the case on Mars and that microbial life would be on or near the surface that the Vikings had sampled.

No sooner were the results from the Viking instruments in, than it was discovered that there was an even older type of microbial life on Earth when, in 1977 ‘black smokers’ were found in volcanically active parts of the ocean floor, at depths of several kilometres. Removed from sunlight, these archaea (literally, ‘the old ones’) live off the minerals released by the hydrothermal activity. Subsequently our view of life was further revised when ‘extremophiles’ were discovered thriving in acidic, salty, alkaline, very hot, very cold and radiation soaked environments previously considered lethal. Although the Vikings had found no sign of organics, and the surface was extremely hostile, suggesting that life had never gained a foothold, the discovery of microbes living far beneath the surface of the Earth raised the possibility of life below the surface of Mars, where there may be water-ice and/or hydrothermal activity. Perhaps, because the microbes were beyond the reach of the Vikings’ instruments, the negative result was premature.

Following the negative tests for biological activity by the Vikings, NASA – in the belief that Mars was once warm and wet, as the erosional features on the surface suggest – decided to ‘chase the water’ in the hope of establishing that conditions on Mars were once suitable for life, although this would not prove that life had developed. The targets selected (from many) were what seemed to be an outflow channel, a dry lake and a patch of minerals emplaced by hydrothermal activity. In 1997 Mars Pathfinder landed in an outflow channel where it released the small Sojourner rover to perform chemical analyses of nearby rocks. NASA followed up in 2004 with the much larger Mars Exploration Rovers, which were equipped to act as mobile field geologists. One was landed in what seemed to be a dried up lake bed inside a crater, and the other set down in an area that a remote-sensing orbital survey had identified as haematite, a likely indicator of hydrothermal activity. Both of these missions have yielded evidence that conditions were once conducive to the development of life.

In parallel with these NASA projects, the European Space Agency developed the Mars Express remote-sensing orbiter, which has detected traces of methane that may have been released by microbes. If microbial life is found on Mars, will it be based on DNA? Will this indicate that life developed independently? Or that it has characteristics in common with the most ancient forms of terrestrial life? If life is found on two planets in the same planetary system, this would favour the panspermia hypothesis. And if martian life is radically different, then in light of the discovery of planetary systems around other stars, this would, as remarked by Philip Morrison of MIT, "transform life from the status of a miracle to that of a statistic". These are all questions that the exploration of Mars for life are aimed to answer.

3 out of 5 stars Stuck in the details.......2007-08-24

The author clearly has a problem of not being able to focus on the big picture. With a name like "Water and the search for life on mars," one would expect the main theme of the book to specifically be about the characteristics of Mars that point to the possibility of life. However, this is not the case. Harland consistently gets stuck in mundane details such as how NASA actually lands its probes, the different stages of a specific landing, and what are the different gadgets on each probe and lander. Furthermore, he goes on for about 30 pages trying to lecture the reader about the biology of DNA, proteins, and amino acids. He simply tries to cover too many topics at once and this leaves the reader exhausted, confused, and frustrated.

I picked up this book because I was intrigued about why scientists actually believe there might have been life on Mars in the past or if there currently is life on the planet. Instead I found myself reading uninteresting details about how a crater is formed and why there are mechanical failures on NASA probes. Harland spends a significant amount of time discussing how NASA conducts their missions instead of actually focusing on the much more interesting topic of life on other planets.

Overall, I do not recommend this book for anyone that is specifically interested about the possibility of life on Mars. You will lose yourself in the technical details and get frustrated by the book's lack of focus.

4 out of 5 stars Mars as we now know it.......2007-02-28

David Harland has done an excellent job summarizing the results of international efforts to explore Mars with telescopes and, now, robotic spacecraft. Our understanding has increased dramatically in recent years thanks to high-resolution mapping from orbiting spacecraft and, primarily, to the astonishing discoveries of the Mars Exploration Rovers: Spirit and Opportunity. I found some of the geological discussion in the middle part of the book a bit challenging, but well worth the effort because I think I now have at least a passing appreciation for overall context of the Rover missions. The preliminaries occupy the first 130 pages of Harland's book and the real meat is in the 90 pages or so that follow, detailing the traverses and results of Spirit and Opportunity during their first 350 or so martian days on the planet. The evidence for wet periods in the history of Mars is clearly presented and of great value to a non-expert like me. My only reservation is that more attention could have been paid to cross-referencing and labeling of the maps. Highly recommended.

"First we shape things, then they shape us", wusste Winston Churchill. Was sind wahrhaft prägende Architekturen?

                    Description:
Synthesizing existing work from diverse disciplines, this paper introduces a culture-gene coevolutionary approach to human behavior and psychology, and applies it to the evolution of cooperation. After a general discussion of cooperation in humans, this paper summarizes Dual Inheritance Theory and shows how cultural transmission can be brought under the Darwinian umbrella in order to analyze how culture and genes coevolve and jointly influence human behavior and psychology. We then present a generally applicable mathematical characterization of the problem of cooperation. From a Dual Inheritance perspective, we review and discuss work on kinship, reciprocity, reputation, social norms, and ethnicity, and their application to solving the problem of cooperation.

                      Book Description

This text not only provides a thorough introduction to statistical physics and thermodynamics but also exhibits the universality of the chain of ideas that leads from the laws of microphysics to the macroscopic behaviour of matter. A wide range of applications teaches students how to make use of the concepts, and many exercises will help to deepen their understanding. Drawing on both quantum mechanics and classical physics, the book follows modern research in statistical physics.

Volume I discusses in detail the probabilistic description of quantum or classical systems, the Boltzmann-Gibbs distributions, the conservation laws, and the interpretation of entropy as missing information. Thermodynamics and electromagnetism in matter are dealt with, as well as applications to gases, both dilute and condensed, and to phase transitions.

This softcover edition accomodates the many requests to make this widely used and often cited classical text available again.

5 out of 5 stars Interesting treatment from an information point of view.......2005-08-23

This is one of the earliest comprehensive treatment of Statistical Mechanics (SM) from the perspective of information. The presentation of the foundation of SM here is much clearer and unified compared to the standard understanding, due to the adoption of the maximum entropy principle (and the subjecive interpretation of probability). The issue of entropy and irreversibility also received interesting discussion here.
An earlier book that treats SM in the similar form is Amnon Katz' book "Principles of statistical mechanics ; the information theory approach".

Jitterbug Perfume is an epic. which is to say, it begins in the forests of ancient Bohemia and doesn't conclude until nine o'clock tonight [Paris time]. It is a saga, as well. A saga must have a hero, and the hero of this one is a janitor with a missing bottle. The bottle is blue, very, very old, and embossed with the image of a goat-horned god. If the liquid in the bottle is actually is the secret essence of the universe, as some folks seem to think, it had better be discovered soon becaused it is leaking and there is only a drop of two left.

An amusing book. Seems to also explain why American sugar/sweetening tastes worse in coke, etc., the use of beets instead of proper sugar cane!

Anyway, lots of silliness and erotic cravings for sensual indulgence, some shagging and a bit of running around by the god Pan. Not too bad.

Still Life With Woodpecker is my favorite Robbins, and this is a close second. If you like the English language at all and if you have any sort of imagination, you simply have to love this guy.
He spins words in dizzying patterns, pulling thoughts and concepts and connections out of thin air like a literary magician. Even when he misses his mark you've got to give him credit for his daring. Not afraid to digress down endless allies of goofiness, Robbins occasionally finds the light at the end of the tunnel and is thrilling at those moments.
The rest of the time his polymath mind teaches you all sorts of things about all sorts of things, while keeping a smile on your face. I still recall this book when I eat beets, even 20 years later.
There's some very real genius in parts of Jitterbug Perfume.
This book will make you think in ways you have never thought before, and learn about your mind in the process; what more can you ask of art?

I am a die hard Tom Robbins fan and this is his best work and my all time favorite book. I HIGHLY recommend it to everyone. Right now I'm re-reading it for the fourth time, its a great story to revisit every once in a while.

Tom Robbins shows in "Jitterbug Perfume" that he is the master of language and not afraid to play with the English language. His similes and metaphors are always good for a laugh or gape of awe . .

This book tells the story of a perfume bottle, a man who started as king, became a peasant, then a wanderer and finally an immortal and his journeys, the decline and death of Pan, and various perfumers who are seeking the ultimate fragrance. And let's not forget the unwritten hero of the book - the glorious beet!

The book is full of twists and turns, mostly created by Robbins' creative use of the English language - he bends rules into all sorts of interesting shape. If you are a fan of Robbins, a fan of epic stories, or even a fan of books that are a bit different, you will LOVE this one! Don't miss it!

                      Product Description

Meet Nikki Nasco: 40, single, obsessive, neurotic, unorthodox and unexpectedly fun. She is having a very normal day. She goes to the gym, she calls her mother, and she stresses out about not having her Top Five desert island CD s selected.

Meet Amber Lawson: 35, lesbian, driven, aerobics instructor. She too is having a very normal day. She attends law school, teaches Boot Camp and receives a phone call from Nikki, the purpose of which she never fully understands, but knows there is a deserted island involved.

                      And then the darkness comes...

In a world where coffee is no longer available, the only television shows are reality TV re-runs, and the animals are talking back, Nikki, Amber and a singing Coyote in a do-rag are out to restore the light (and hopefully prevent Nikki s eyes from being stolen by an Irish midget).

                      Normal is missing. Reward.

Del Sesto pays homage to Tom Robbins and Christopher Moore in this clever, insightful, and flat-out hilarious novel while maintaining an entirely original point of view, making All Encompassing Trip one of my favorite books of the year! Jen Lancaster, author of Bitter is the New Black

All Encompassing Trip is a trip! Imagine Kafka, Kerouac, and Douglas Adams on the road, and you ll get a feel for this completely original, witty, and wild book that s (thank goodness!) anything but normal. Del Sesto s prose sparkles. What a great debut. Lori Jakiela, author of Miss New York Has Everything

5 out of 5 stars an entertaining trip.......2007-08-02

                      What a trip...

The main character of this book, Nikki, wakes up one morning and the world is completely dark. Everything she touches disappears (well, except for the things that were on her bed while she slept) nobody can see her, she can't make coffee, and there is a (British) talking coyote on her front steps. This is how the book begins, and it only gets crazier from there.

Nikki is neurotic, intelligent and obsessive; yet she's completely adorable and has so much of each and every one of us within her. Her best friend Amber is a more down to earth and organized woman, who helps to balance Nikki's chaos and help them through their journey. Ultimately this book is about self discovery, but there are a lot of entertaining things that happen on the way to reaching that point. Nikki finds out at the start of the story that there are a series of tasks she needs to complete before her world can resume its normalcy. Part of the task is even figuring out what the tasks are, since Lefty, her talking coyote companion only sings segments of songs as hints. Nikki needs to decipher his messages and complete these tasks, all while staying one step ahead of Luke, the bad guy, who wants Nikki's eyeballs. Seriously.

I can't even begin to sum this book up accurately--you need to read it for yourself. I was giggling by the end of the first page, and I honestly didn't stop until the last page. It's creative, original and highly entertaining. I recommend it to any of you who enjoy something a little different...think Douglas Adams ("The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy) meets Christopher Moore (highly satirical author) and you have Nicole Del Sesto

5 out of 5 stars A fun and funky read from cover to cover........2007-07-09

The debut novel of California author Nicole Del Sesto, All Encompassing Trip is a fantastically bizarre and whimsical story about the literal breakdown of reality. Caught amid a world of darkness in which nothing is on television but reality TV rerun, animals are talking back, and simple coffee is beyond mortal reach, stressed-out forty something woman Nikki Nasco and driven aerobics instructor and lesbian Amber Lawson must join forces with a singing Coyote in a do-rag to bring back the light. Irreverent to the point of being quixotic, All Encompassing Trip evokes the wild and crazy atmosphere of a world where normal is Missing in Action. A fun and funky read from cover to cover.

2 out of 5 stars Okay but not great.......2007-07-08

The book was okay. It wasn't as good as the description on the back made it sound like it would be. It took me at least halfway to even begin getting into it. It all finally made sense at the end, but I don't think a lot of people will be able to stick with it that long to find out what was going on.

                      5 out of 5 stars Tremedously entertaining.......2007-06-14

This is such a fun and addicting book. Nikki goes on quite a ride on her quest to bring light back to the world. The three main characters are wonderful. My personal favorite is good old Lefty, the do-rag wearing coyote that sings clues throughout the journey. Close on their heels is a seven and half foot Rastafarian with his evil leprechaun henchman and a wise cracking crow. Along with the leprechaun is a motley crew of some of the craziest characters ever put on paper, yet somehow a little too similar to someone you've run into at one time or another.

The book is so much fun it should come with a warning. You may not be able to stop reading it once you start it.

5 out of 5 stars Chick Lit goes Bizarro.......2007-05-13

All Encompassing Trip explores the age-old question of "What five CDs would you want to be stuck on a desert island with?" when its main character, Nikki, finds herself transported to an alternate version of our world where the only music that she has to listen to are the three desert island disks that she's able to make up her mind about. Nikki must complete certain tasks in order for her life to return to normal. But why would Nikki want to go back to the mundanities of our world when she has the fantasy world of Del Sesto's vast imagination to have adventures in? It probably has something to do with the extinction of light and coffee, the disappearance of any useful object that Nikki tries to put her hand on, and the Lucky Charms cereal reject that wants to pop her eyes out of her sockets.

All Encompassing Trip entertained me from start to finish and I highly recommend it.
