Ignorance is bliss, but knowledge is power........2006-07-28

Yes this book makes us confront our own rationilaztions and justifactions for not engaging in safe sex, or engaging in promiscious sex with strangers. The facts are facts, regardless of what you want to believe, and Dr. Goldstone lays all the cards on the table and lets y ou make the decisions from there. He is a gay doctor, so these same issues which he talks about are physical conditions that he himself has to avoid inh is own personal life. I bought this book for my own edification and plan on donating it to my Universitiy's GLBT student services library so others can have insight into the heatlth risks associated with gay sex. The book made me take my own sexual practices into perspective, both past and future, and allowed me to make more intellgient decisions on how to proceed. He make sit very clear that HIV/AIDS is not the only STD out there that can have a very damaging effect, and he also discusses many other health issues and illnesses that can affect men. He also discusses sex, and how to use lubricants and condoms and how to position yourself for penetration, so this is a great device for the inexperienced young men trying their sexuality out for the first time. Dr. Goldstone is 100% pro gay, he is gay himself, but that does not mean we can deny the truth of our biological bodies and the physical conditions that can come upon them. Read this book with a grain of salt, and use it to better protect yourself, thats what it's intention is for. He also adds vignettes to the chapters previous to you reading them to give you a perspective of where he is coming from, and also has a great sense of humor, although it is a bit corny. I wish more MDs would realize we need some humor in order to rest our minds during a physical examination. He also makes it very clear that you should be completely upfront with your physician about being gay and the sexual acts you perform, otherwise most straight physicians in particular could easily over look your symptoms as being something else entirely.

Informative and fun.......2002-07-02

All things considered, I expected this to be a somewhat dull read, a little too technical because it was penned by an MD. I couldn't have been more wrong. Not only is this book very informative and up to date, but it's written in a hugely entertaining and, yes, erotic, style. Sex manuals are very helpful when you have a date, but sometimes they can also be good company on those lonely nights when you don't have a man. This book is one of the best gay sex manauls available.

What you need to know - and probably more than you want to.........2002-03-27

The guy's a doctor -- so, with excrutiating fascination and enthusiastic detail he spells it all out. I agree that it is enough to put you off sex entirely, but sometimes what you need to know is more than what you want to know. It's damn tough being the grownup sometimes....

Since 'In's and Out's'' is one of the best selling guides online currently I probably would have just purchased it had I not taken a 'browsing' trip to a local bookstore. It's an extremely detailed compendium of VD's and skin conditions including illustrations of various lesions for easy identification. Now, other manuals (gay, straight or whatever) have a chapter for these things too but this book spends an inordinate amount of time on them at the expense of other areas which is why I think some other reviewers here note that the book at times seems to be more about the (un)joy of gay sex than the joy of. I certainly find it hard to imagine a 'straight' sex guide of this brevity spending such large chunks of space on VD's at the expense of, well, sex. There's certainly little that really conveys the 'Joy of Sex' here or any spiritual, holistic aspects of it. The book appears to have been written with the promiscuous person in mind (and I don't mean to be in any way judgementmal here), recommending scrubbing oneself down in the shower after each sexual 'encounter' (not too romantic) and pretty much treating VD's as a fact of life that you probably WILL encounter. It's also full of a lot of comments from the author based upon personal sentiments (such as that it's terrible for men to go out with facial stubble cause it's 'rough') that would have been better left out since not everyone share's Goldstone's taste.

Frightening reading.......2001-09-28

As a run-of-the-mill, college educated individual without a high level of medical knowledge, I found this book to be at best, scary. I am certain that the author is not being the least bit homophobic, and I can't imagine any reason for him to be unreasonably alarmist about the dangers of gay sex or sex in general. But as a previous reviewer noted, the book's context does seem to run to the negative, and I wouldn't be too surprised if a lot of readers are completely turned off to gay sex by this book. Perhaps a book shouldn't be judged for not couching it's topics gently, but, I think a better effort could have made to make this book less frightening. Apparently, here is the blunt, in-your-face, truth, and it's not pretty.

Exceptional and entertaining resource.......2006-09-28

I got this book solely for the profile of the artist Tee Corinne

I was pleasantly delighted. The book is worth the price for the exceptional annotations at the end of each section alone. An excellent bibliography gives the reader many book purchase ideas.

This is a Keeper!

Robust Practical Modeling methods with code........2005-11-20

The author himself mentions at the end of the book that :

"The applications I presented in this book were chosen to illustrate simple computational methods rather than to constitute serious research simulations of natural systems"

On the contrary to the one star rated review. The reviewer possibly overlooked one aspect of the book. Sure, the Basic code presented may have its problems. What the book does offer, though, is to quantify some very simple and robust techniques for quantifying the relationships such as CO2, and reservoirs (for an example).

He starts of using Eulers solution , gives the algorithm , and the reason and ways that he frames his analytic relationships.

Whats important or useful is that he shows what tests to conduct in order that you set up your system of equations in such a way that youre able to achieve numerical stability with time.

Put it another way - he is mindful that if you set up your equations in the correct way - it doesnt matter how you perturbe the system - the solutions cranked out by the model - tend to converge to the same answers. Numerical stability.

In terms of ideas and applications of ideas this book is a gem. The maths is aimed at practical implementation. Although youll need a reasonable maths back ground - you arent presented with intractible mathematics. This stuff is down to earth, programmable.

To cap , more importantly - the ideas and modelling method presented is robust and practical .

Forget the myopic magnification of microscopic errors.
Focus on the bigger picture.

Worst Book Ever.......2005-11-10

Well maybe not. However, neither the mathematical methods used nor the algorithms used to implement them are well developed. These fundamental shortcoming when combined with abundant typos and errors in the included code make this book more of a headache than it is worth. Save yourself the pain and skip this one.

Outstanding read!.......2007-06-01

This book is an outstanding read! I'm only 4/10 of the way through it but I CAN'T PUT IT DOWN! I learn something new on every other page. This is not just a recitation of 733 ships going down in chronological order, the author does group similar events together to show the reader ways of survival or defence, while generally proceeding thru the WW2. He will talk about a theatre of the war giving a fortaste of events and ships involved, and later tell in detail specific adventures in this convoy or that, then move on to the next theatre. He covers ships other than Libertys and Victorys, such as Hog Islanders and foreign ships. Until reading this book, I never knew that countries under German domination (Poland, among others) had ships in our convoys! Or that Britain sent ships to the USA to protect OUR shores. One minor gripe: I wish he had included a column in the ship appendix to show which convoy a ship was in. It's hard to keep track of a certain convoy without it. It's well footnoted with his sources too.

'Keep 'em sailing'.......2007-03-24

At some times and places during World War I, an Allied merchant seaman stood considerably less than half a chance of coming back alive. Yet, according to John Bunker, no ship ever was held in port for lack of a crew.
"Keep 'em sailing" was the motto of the merchant navy, and it did, in the face of appalling difficulties.
The least of these, perhaps, was arriving at, say, Dubai, and swinging on the hook for two months, waiting to unload, with no shore leave, no drinks, no women and no recreation.
The worst, probably, was being adrift on a raft in moderate weather. Although there were magnificent feats of boat handling, and some survivors of sinkings made it to safety after six or seven weeks afloat, uncountable men perished of sun, thirst, hunger or sharks after days or weeks of suffering.
Somewhere in between, and very common, was the outlook when a ship was lost in the North Atlantic in winter. Death came here, too, but quickly.
It was worse to be sunk by the Japanese, who always tried to massacre the shipwrecked crews (and torture them, too, when they got the chance), than the Germans, who didn't.
Bunker, a seaman during the war and later a newspaper reporter, has gathered together hundreds of representative experiences, and a few that are almost hard to believe. For instance, that anybody would ship out with Zosimo Tabudlong or Jan Hoogerwerf, who were torpedoed five times during the war.
Submarines were the deadliest enemy of the cargo ship or tanker, although in narrow waters airplanes and mines were a threat. And storms and reefs always.
The spirit and heroism of the crews -- Bunker sticks to Americans, but the story was the same with men from many nations -- was remarkable. In the whole war, only one U.S. Navy surface warship was lost with all hands. It happened scores, if not hundreds, of times to the merchantmen.
It required courage to ride a ship full of explosives into waters where one's own navy was afraid to go. Some of the ship explosions during the war were equivalent to about a tenth of a Hiroshima atomic bomb.
Bunker presents the story as almost unvarnished valor. There was plenty of that, but these were ordinary men.
After the first few months of the war, merchant ships sailed with a Naval (occasionally Army) Armed Guard, who manned a deck gun and an anti-aircraft gun or two. The merchant sailors, who were unionized, were paid several times as much as the Navy men (mostly draftees), and there was ill feeling about that; although Bunker, who wrote an unpublished history of the Seafarers International Union, doesn't mention it.
More to the point for landlubbers was the behavior of tourist businessmen along the Atlantic Coast in 1942. Although the lights of the hotels made perfect background for German U-boats hunting at night, the resort owners used their considerable political clout to keep the lights on. Many workingmen died for that.
Bunker tells the tales in undramatic newspaper style.

Filled with stories of heroism and loss.......2002-02-05

Granted, a Liberty Ship doesn't have the firepower of a battleship, the reach and awe-inspiring bulk of an aircraft carrier, or even the swashbuckling glamour of a destroyer or PT boat. Still, after reading this exhaustively researched book, it's hard to believe many Americans apparently considered merchant mariners little better than draft dodgers (one merchant sailor who'd had seven ships torpedoed out from under him was thrown out of a club for 'not being in the service'). It took nearly fifty years for them to officially be accorded 'veteran' status.

The story of World War II can't be told, the war itself couldn't have been fought, without the merchant marine. Merchant mariners, in turn, suffered a higher percentage of casualties -- nearly one in four -- than any (other) American armed service. John Bunker, himself a former merchant mariner, has produced a book that tells the merchant marine story in detail ... in an awful lot of detail, in fact. Not really a history of the Maritime Service, or of the strategy of merchant shipping, a slightly more accurate subtitle might have been 'The story of American merchant mariners in World War II.'

733 American merchant ships were lost during the war, and Bunker sometimes seems determined to tell us about every single one of them. I sometimes found myself skimming over tales that, for all their heroism and undoubted drama, still sounded similar to others he'd already told. One chapter, for example, is about ships being torpedoed and men surviving on rafts in the icy waters of the North Atlantic. The next chapter is about ships being torpedoed and men surviving on rafts in the shark-infested Caribbean. The next is about ships being torpedoed and men surviving on rafts in the trackless wastes of the Pacific. Then came the one about ships that went down in storms...

Despite the repetitive nature of some of this, however, many memorable stories do stand out. Men like Gustave Alm, Cadet Edwin O'Hara, or Rexford Dickey, or the crews of the 'Stanvac Calcutta,' the 'Stephen Hopkins' (O'Hara's ship), or the 'Cedar Mills' can rightfully take their place in any collection of genuine war heroes. I encourage any student of the war to study this story of shamefully neglected American heroes.

They delivered!.......2001-06-14

This book is a wonderful tribute to the Wartime valor of the US Merchant Marine. These largely unheralded heroes delivered desperately needed supplies across perilous seas to our beleagered Allies and to "Uncle Joe", the enemy of our Enemy. FDR's stated willingness to sacrifice up to 90% of convoys, with "all hands and cargoes", proved a staggeringly accurate prediction. Yet Merchant seamen and Naval Armed Guard gunners -- all volunteers -- gallantly braved the Uboats, torpedo planes, and mines, as well as freezing winter storms and other hazards of the sea to fulfill their duty. Without them, the War could not have been won. They deserve recognition, and this marvelous book provides it! Here are their own descriptions of sailing, camaraderie, and life aboard ship. Here too are their harrowing anecdotes of war, heroism, and loss. My father was skipper of a freighter and a survivor of the Murmansk runs, and these stories remind me of his. "Heroes in Dungarees" would make a great gift. I intend to give copies to all my family and friends! Anyone who appreciates the subject of this book will also enjoy Humphrey Bogart's "Action in the North Atlantic" and Jan DeHartog's novel "Captain".

Gone but not forgotten.......1999-08-05

This is not a scholarly work but rather, this book is a marvelous collection of wartime sea stories.
