Book Description
Covering the 15 most common tax penalties applied to individuals and small businesses, this guide provides all the necessary ammunition readers will need to fight back against the IRS's imposed tax penalties. Readers are guided through pertinent tax laws, exceptions and bases for relief, forms and rationale for contestations, and the abusive assertion (by the IRS) of the 75 percent civil fraud penalty. Also covered are reasonable explanations for late filing, court rulings for and against the IRS, information on the "penalty of choice" for IRS auditors, fines and prison terms for false returns, how and why penalties should be expunged from records, if possible, and opportunities within the IRS for appeals.

Book Description
This book reviews the interconnection of cosmology and particle physics over the last decade. It provides introductory courses in supersymmetry, superstring and M-theory, responding to an increasing interest to evaluate the cosmological consequences of these theories. Based on a series of extended courses providing an introduction to the physics of the very early universe, in the light of the most recent advances in our understanding of the fundamental interactions, it reviews all the classical issues (inflation, primordial fluctuations, dark matter, baryogenesis), but also introduces the most recent ideas about what happened at the Big Bang, and before.

Book Description
Dr. Gànti has introduced Chemoton Theory to explain the origin of life. This first volume,
Theoretical Foundations of Fluid
Machineries, is a discussion of the theoretical foundations of fluid automata. It introduces quantitative methods - cycle stoichiometry and stoichiokinetics - in order to describe fluid automata with the methods of algebra, as well as their construction, starting from elementary chemical reactions up to the complex, program-directed, proliferating fluid automata, the chemotons.
The second volume of the book is the
Theory of Living Systems, the application of the theory of fluid automata on living systems. The volume proves, that chemotons possess the general properties of living systems and - at the same time - every living system has the same basic organisation as a chemoton. Volume Two develops on the basis of the chemoton theory, the processes of biogenesis and of the prebiotic evolution, up to the appearance of the enzymes and genes, i.e. up to the formation of prokaryote cells.
Chemoton Theory outlines the development of a theoretical biology, based on exact quantitative considerations and the consequences of its application on biotechnology and on the artificial synthesis of living systems.

Walter M. Miller's acclaimed SF classic A Canticle for Leibowitz opens with the accidental excavation of a holy artifact: a creased, brittle memo scrawled by the hand of the blessed Saint Leibowitz, that reads: "Pound pastrami, can kraut, six bagels--bring home for Emma." To the Brothers of Saint Leibowitz, this sacred shopping list penned by an obscure, 20th-century engineer is a symbol of hope from the distant past, from before the Simplification, the fiery atomic holocaust that plunged the earth into darkness and ignorance. As 1984 cautioned against Stalinism, so 1959's A Canticle for Leibowitz warns of the threat and implications of nuclear annihilation. Following a cloister of monks in their Utah abbey over some six or seven hundred years, the funny but bleak Canticle tackles the sociological and religious implications of the cyclical rise and fall of civilization, questioning whether humanity can hope for more than repeating its own history. Divided into three sections--Fiat Homo (Let There Be Man), Fiat Lux (Let There Be Light), and Fiat Voluntas Tua (Thy Will Be Done)--Canticle is steeped in Catholicism and Latin, exploring the fascinating, seemingly capricious process of how and why a person is canonized. --Paul Hughes
Book Description
Winner of the 1961 Hugo Award for Best Novel and widely considered one of the most accomplished, powerful, and enduring classics of modern speculative fiction, Walter M. Miller, Jr.'s A Canticle for Leibowitz is a true landmark of twentieth-century literature -- a chilling and still-provocative look at a post-apocalyptic future.
In a nightmarish ruined world slowly awakening to the light after sleeping in darkness, the infant rediscoveries of science are secretly nourished by cloistered monks dedicated to the study and preservation of the relics and writings of the blessed Saint Isaac Leibowitz. From here the story spans centuries of ignorance, violence, and barbarism, viewing through a sharp, satirical eye the relentless progression of a human race damned by its inherent humanness to recelebrate its grand foibles and repeat its grievous mistakes. Seriously funny, stunning, and tragic, eternally fresh, imaginative, and altogether remarkable, A Canticle for Leibowitz retains its ability to enthrall and amaze. It is now, as it always has been, a masterpiece.

A possible future for us.......2007-09-07
When I saw this book referenced on Mary Doria Russell's website - AND saw that she had written a new introduction to it - I had to buy this book. "The Sparrow" and "Children of God" are two of my favorite books.
I agree with her that this post-apocalyptic novel has some eerie similarities to today's horrible "Learning, knowledge, science and facts are evil and we should just spend money and listen to George Bush" culture. One of the most telling quotes is this: "To minimize suffering and maximize security were natural and proper ends of society and Caesar. But then they become the only ends, somehow, and the only basis of law - a perversion. Inevitably then, in seeking only them, we found only their opposites - maximum suffering and minimum security."
But I think I missed many of the ground breaking aspects of the book. (Either that or I just read it in the wrong decade - which is often the case.)
I certainly sympathize with the monks and their despair at Man's seemingly unrelenting determination to destroy itself...along with Man's complete inability to learn from the past. I sympathize with them and certainly agree with them...but I don't FEEL what they are feeling. There was a certain...distance to this book that kept it from having the impact that I expected.
So I give this book a four star rating...yet will most likely not seek out the sequel.
A case for the separation of science and religion.......2007-09-05
After reading the many insightful reviews I just wanted to add my two cents and make a point that others seem to have glossed over. The great irony of this book is that the Church perpetuates humanity's destruction by preserving the scientific record. They then have the audacity to deny people the one relief that will save them from suffering. Miller portrays the individuals involved sympathetically but the book seems to be a clear attack on the the Church as an institution, with wider implications into abortion and other issues.
Not Free SF Reader.......2007-09-03
A very good post-apocalyptic novel. A story that is clearly a cautionary tale about nuclear war. The book postulates about whether or not humanity can manage to avoid such cataclysms and the destructions of major civilisations, while also looking at the story of some local monks who work hard to try and preserve and recover knowledge to improve the situation.
Eerie view of the future.......2007-09-03
It's after the atomic war, and the earth is in a new dark age. What organization take control in the dark ages. Yep, the Catholic Church. Only this time, for a change, the church is an organ of positive change, although still within the usual religious superstitions. This is dark, though, and the future is not a wonderful place for most people. Miller is an excellent writer, though, and he presents his ideas with great skill. I recommend this book, but religious people with no imagination will hate it.
A Canticle for Leibowitz 1959.......2007-08-13
Plot Kernel - Told in three timeframes from the viewpoint of Catholic monks: (1) Centuries in the past, there had been a nuclear war. Now scientific and historical ignorance is universal; only a few salvaged incomplete manuscripts of the past remain, kept in the care of a Catholic order of monks who are dedicated to their preservation but have no understanding of their meaning. (2) Further Centuries later, rudimentary scientific principles are only just becoming understood. Tensions arise among the monks in regard to these rediscoveries. (3) Further Centuries beyond, the old pre-nuclear-war world has been rebuilt, along with space travel. Nuclear war erupts.
Customer Reviews:
Leibowitz -- A Classic.......2007-01-10
Without doubt, this was the late Walter M. Miller Jr.'s finest work. It was rejected by Galaxy Science Fiction as potentially blaphemous to the Roman Catholic Church, and accepted by Catholic editor Tony Boucher for The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction as praiseworthy and respectful. I agree with the latter opinion. Serious collectors of science fiction should have a copy of A Canticle for Leibowitz on their bookshelves.

Book Description
Written in Father Tim Kavanagh's own hand, this wonderful collection of quotes brings to life the personal reflections of Mitford's beloved Episcopal priest. Here Father Tim has carefully recorded his favorite quotes from a variety of thinkers, philosophers, and poets whom he has admired over the years. Next to the quotes are Father Tim's personal comments, scribblings, and doodlings. From C. S. Lewis and Mark Twain to Aristophanes and St. Paul, these heartwarming words on love, life, and faith are a perfect addition to the Mitford series-and a must-have for Jan Karon's millions of readers.
Customer Reviews:
Very Enjoyable.......2006-11-03
This is a great book and I enjoyed reading all of father Tim's sayings. It just makes the Mitford series seem more real. Highly recommend. Great fun reading with a seriousness to it.
Patches of Godlight.......2006-06-13
Dear Father Tim,
Millions of readers admire your wisdom and only wish we could make an appointment to discuss our issues. Love your quotes and find myself repeating them when I need inspiration. Love ya',
Charlene Mikkelsen, author of Wild Flowers Are Forever
Excellent Collection of Quotes.......2006-01-09
I've never read the first word of any of Jan Karon's books (which says nothing of her abilities.) I just happened to pick up this book at the "new book" section of the local library, took it home and was enthralled with the collection of quotes from various authors. And that's all the book is--quotes. But, I was so impressed with the book that I bought a copy for myself to keep and have lent it out to others.
If you want an excellent book to "jog" your spirituality or for meditation, this is a very good place to start. It is obvious that Karon has picked some of the cream of christian quotes. The book lends itself to skipping around or just read it page after page, which lends to the fun of the book.
Very enjoyable and thought provoking.
Spiritual Delight.......2005-07-21
Anyone who is a fan of Father Tim and his Chrisitian insights and appreciates the wisdom of others that he finds in his life, will appreciate Jan Karon's clever presentation in this book. Pretty enough for your table, whether coffe or bedside, this little book is a jewel. One really feels that you have something of Father Tim's own journal, and you share some private and special insight into the thoughts of Mitford's best-loved shepherd of souls. From the first flyleaf where Father Tim writes his name, through the post-it notes and asides written in the margins, this is uplifting reading whenever the need for a great thought arises. Adding to the uniqueness of the volume are several blank pages at the end to which the reader can add personal quotes and insights. All of the the publishing information is placed at the end of the journal also. The volume makes a great gift for special friends that share your life and the love of the Mitford series.
Better than bartletts quotations!.......2005-04-07
I'm often looking for a quote to include in a toast, a note or even an invitation... I've checked out the standard quotation books and they are stilted in their organization and even when there's a fairly straightforward subject (babies, for a congratulatory note, for example) the quotations are mundane and uninspiring. This book is different.
It collects thoughts on things like reading, life, letter writing, love, service, death and lots on prayer and God. You'll be surprised how often you reach for it when writing! Plus it's a great read.
