Often laypeople are bombarded with medical terminology that is a mystery. This book demystifies many healthcare terms and gets to the root (Latin)of many words so readers can determine what a word means even if they do not know the definition.

THis is a required book in an herbal studies class which is why I purchased it. It has helped me with my materia medicas and decode what was once a mystery.

Too Russian.......2007-10-05

For me, the novel was too reminiscent of a Russian morality tale for the intelligencia. Soviet intelligencia was obsessed with the story of an artist repressed by the state (see Master in Master and Margaritta, and many other works). This novel brings the familiar theames to the more recent times, e.g. nearing the collapse of the Soviet Union. There is a hope that with changing times, the ones that sold their souls to the State will be punished while the ones that stood strong for artistic integrity would triumph. In this regard this novel provides if not a happy, but a hopeful ending to the age-long story of an oppressed russian artist. Unfortunately, knowing the political situation in Russia now, it is hard to see the good triumph. If Sukhnov could just hang on a bit longer, I am sure he could have become the favorite art critic for the Putin crowd.

Words beautifully written, very enjoyable read, one of a kind based on Russian art history. It's a truely unique book.

Entertaining and Artistic.......2007-06-28

I finished Olga Grushin's novel a few days ago. I thought it was an interesting book. It is a smooth and easy read, and I was able to read the near 400 pages in two evenings. It is mostly a light read. It is a compelling and entertaining novel, and it is a novel that I would recommend.

Without giving away the plot - the novel is about the universal theme of an older person wondering if they did the right thing when they chose a career path when they were younger. It is the story about a middle aged Russian art critic, Sukhanov, who decided when he was younger at the age of 33 to leave the unpredictable career of painting and instead become a institutional or bureaucratic art critic, and eventually the editor of a monthly art magazine that reflected state values as opposed to aesthetic values. He made that decision with the help and urging of his father-in-law so that he would have financial security and would be able to provide for his wife and future family. At the time when he was 33 he thought that he was "selling out" to become financially successful. The story takes place when he is now older, in his fifties, about 23 years later, and it is filled with flashbacks of his younger days and his first meetings with his wife and other artist friends. Also as we learn later in the novel, there is a parallel story of another man - a friend of Sukhanov from his younger days - who remained a poor and struggling artist. They meet again and it is an opportunity for Sukhanov to re-evaluate his life and his own artistic abilities, and his own identity as an artist.

The story is about his life as retrospective analysis - as we see through his dreams or "dream life." Can he come to terms with his decision made 23 years ago? What will happen to him as he gets older? Does he want to paint again? These issues or questions are combined with the story of his relationship with his wife and two children - the children are now adults. Superimposed over the dreams is the story of his family life: his family life is dissolving, his wife has become restless in their marriage and their two children are moving on with their own lives.

There is much irony here for the reader in that the protagonist Sukhanov contemplates the differences between being energetic or truly creative as an artist. It is the same thing that I wondered as I read Grushin's novel: is the writer simply energetic or very good?

The book struck me as following. At the beginning I was hesitant about the book. She seemed to be overly dramatic. Later in the middle the story struck me as energetic or hyperactive, almost to the point of confusion, especially when we get near the drug scene, But by the end I thought she showed a good connection with Russian literature and her own touch of writing showed some brilliance and some artistic ability in putting together a modern Russian novel.

It is an entertaining 5 star read.

Intricately woven reveries and dexterous writing in Olga Grushin's debut.......2007-05-29

Professional reviewers have made note of the fact that English is Ms. Grushin's third language, which makes her fiction debut here all the more impressive. 'The Dream Life of Sukhanov' is filled with intricately woven reveries and a dexterous technique where she seamlessly weaves together current events in the third-person with 30-year remembrances in the first-person. That might sound convoluted, but it's nothing of the sort. Once you recognize the pattern, the technique plays out beautifully. As the book proceeds, Sukhanov's dreams come quicker and stronger. Grushin plunges you in and out of the sequences in deft segues. I would love to see someone make her work into a movie.

Art For Politic's Sake.......2007-03-30

Anatoly Sukhanov had it made. He has a beautiful wife, a luxurious apartment, chauffer driven limousine, and is editor of Russia's premier art journal. But what was the status of art in 1985 Russia? Anatoly's job was to extol an art form that portrayed happy mine workers, smiling women holding their babies, gallant soldiers defending Mother Russia. How does a man who was an aspiring artist in his youth stomach the promotion of such dross?

As the novel progresses Anatoly experiences a series of small, quirky incidents that start him on a mental reverie of his life. When you are young, and poor and struggling you are faced with a decision. Do you as an artist stick to your artistic ideals which are contrary to the regime's dictates, and risk living in poverty or worse or do you take the road that provides a decent living for your wife and children? As the pages fly by the current reality of Anatoly's life begin to meld more and more with his dreams of the past. We wonder, as Anatoly examines his past, if he is going to have a spiritual reawakening. Can he finally cast off his self imposed blinders? There has to be the remains of an artistic soul in this man whose job it is to denounce Matisse, and Dali as decadent, corrupt artists.

This is an amazing book. It is truly a literary work of the highest order. The writing is superb. Here is a Russian born woman writing in what is her third language. One immediately begins to compare the writing with that of Joseph Conrad and Vladimir Nabokov, and the comparison is highly favorable. If you love art, as I do, you will find this book to be especially enjoyable. This is truly a "10 star" book.
