Invaluable Ideas - Not-So-Hot Title.......2005-01-02

There's a Tao of everything. If you've run a search on Amazon for "tao" then you've seen it. Tao of Physics. Tao of Power. Tao of Tacos (believe me, it's coming). Like many others, this book refers to the Tao but doesn't really base its ideas on anything one could reasonably call Taoism. It's a similar theme, but not quite the same.

That doesn't mean that the content isn't any good, though.

If I were ever to become a manager, a negotiator or a business professor, I would make this book required readong to all of my subordinates/students. In fact, I might make my whole family read it. The basic concepts are so incredibly simple, and yet so often forgotten.

I started applying concepts in this book right after I read them. You have to see it to believe it. Need an extension on my paper? Done. Need to have a difficult discussion with the parents? Done. Need to resolve issues with the roommate? Not so successful on that one. That's really the one major flaw - the author assumes that the other person actually cares about your feelings once you lay them out on the table and show yourself as the vulnerable human being you are. Some people don't think that way. I suggest a baseball bat when negotiating with them.

At any rate, this book really can help you do what it promises - to prevent, resolve and transcend conflict in work and everyday life. And don't think it's going to gloss over the various issues you may have. After discussing the general philosophy, the book breaks into chapters upon chapters dealing with conflict in every area you could possibly imagine - at work, with your loved one, with customer service, even with yourself.

Poor title and psychopaths aside, this book will dramatically change your life through one simple concept - forgetting about victory and focusing on true understanding.

One of my hats says "mediator" on it. And in that capacity, I count this as one of my most useful books.

It's not exactly about mediation, or at least it's not a how-to book for mediators. At bottom it's about how to nip conflicts in the bud by not letting the dangerous sort of conflict arise in yourself in the first place.

That's what makes this such a helpful book for mediators. Joel Edelman is convinced that it takes two people to let a conflict get out of hand; if _either one_ of them is ready, willing, and able to try to resolve it, it will usually resolve. And as a lawyer who helped to pioneer the field of mediation, he's got plenty of experience to support his claim.

There's plenty of good advice in this well-written book (and by the way, Mary Beth Crain shares credit for its well-written-ness). In essence it amounts to this: external conflicts arise because, somewhere, there's an internal conflict we've allowed to get out of hand. And in order to get it back _into_ hand, we may have to do some difficult inner work. We're generally not as self-aware, and therefore also not as aware of each other, as we probably think we are; the signals we think we're receiving from other people are often echoes of the vibes we're putting out ourselves.

At any rate, this book isn't just for mediators. It's for anybody at all who wants some practical/spiritual advice about dealing with, and preventing, the toxic sort of conflict -- the poison-spewing kind that demands a "win-lose" outcome. Win-win resolutions are generally possible, but only if we each take responsibility for our own thoughts and actions and don't make our satisfaction depend on what the other person does.

A good question collection........2001-06-13

I found this book useful for step 2 review.The content is relevant and the question format is also very similar to that in the actual exam.All in all this book is good value for money.

Not as good as I expected.......2001-03-06

This book is not as good as I expected. I did the NMS 900 Qs first. Then I did 900 Qs from this book. They are much different! Although I rate this book 3 stars, do you know how many stars I gave to NMS? Six stars---if I were allowed.

But, I have to say most of the cases in this book are good---even very good. The problem is the case arrangement and the explanation. Most of the cases are too short---as some other friends mentioned in their comments. A lot of the explanations are really bad, the authors did not explain directly---why A or B is right. Most of the time, they did not explain why the other answers are wrong. For some explanations, you really do not know what they were talking about. In addition, there are some obvious errors---like A is the right answer and B is given in the explanation.

But anyway, I still learned a lot from this book.

I think that the book that I had must have been different from the one the other reviewers purchased, because my "Appleton & Lange's Practice Test for the USMLE Step 2" had poorly written questions, with many answers that were out of date and/or incorrect. The questions were nothing like those seen on the Step 2. Questions in the book were generally 2-3 sentences long, where as on the computer based test the most of the questions were paragraphs long. The only redeaming part of the tests were that sets of questions would build on one another, forcing you to take several looks at a question. For instance- based on answer for question 'a' and 'b', what is the answer for question 'c'. This type of questioning, however, is nothing like that found on Step 2. For a quick glance at a penny store, this would be an okay book. For improving test taking skill and knowledge at it's full price tag, this one's a joke. For some much better books look at the "Crush the Boards" and "NMS-tests"

excellent update questions.......2000-07-28

This book is an excellent source especially for computer based exam and for student who prefer to study online. Content of the questions and explanations are compatible with real exam. However, it gives your percentile of true answers right away. It would be better if it was at the end of each session.

More substantial than Just Six Numbers.......2000-12-04

Having read a lot of pop science treatments of cosmology/particle physics recently, it was nice to come across a book which actually contains the equations, graphs, plots etc on which the theories are based. This book is a nice summary of the current state of astrophysics, and occupies the rather empty niche between the popular books and heavyweight graduate/postgrad. level texts. I'd like to see more books like this. If you found Rees' "Just Six Numbers" interesting but rather insubstantial, and have some maths/physics training, then the this well worth a read.

The book begins with a review of the physical and mathematical motivations for studying physical theories in the presence of boundaries, with emphasis on electrostatics, vacuum Maxwell theory and quantum cosmology. The Feynman propagator is then studied in Minkowski space- time and in curved space-time. In the latter case, the corresponding Schwinger-DeWitt asymptotic expansion is given. The following chapters introduce the theory of the effective action and the geometric improvement due to Vilkovisky, the manifestly covariant quantization of gauge fields, zeta-function regularization in mathematics and in quantum field theory, and the choice of local or non-local boundary conditions in one-loop quantum theory. In the second part, the authors present their investigations of Euclidean Maxwell theory, simple supergravity and Euclidean quantum gravity. The recurring themes are the evaluation of conformal anomalies and one-loop divergences on manifolds with boundary, the relation between covariant and non-covariant formalisms for the quantization of gauge fields and the choice of boundary condition in the one-loop semiclassical analysis of Euclidean quantum gravity and simple supergravity.

I had already read Out of the Shadows by Patrick Carnes but Don't Call it Love was even more a amazing. It was painful to read trying to understand the sex addicts torment as well as the co-addicts. But on the other hand it was also refreshing to know that there is life after sex addiction and recovery is not only possible but necessary. I would recommend this book to anyone in recovery, it has helped me immensely.

Easily, I could say that Patrick Carne's books on sexual addiction has saved my marriage and my husband's life and maybe my own as well. My first read was "Out of the Shadows" and it softened my angry heart after hearing my husbands confession of being with around 100 women over the past 5 years of our 17 year marriage and all sexual encounters were UNPROTECTED sex. I found out the hard way. How could all these powerful, crippling emotions that I was feeling be tamed?? How could I ever forgive this scrum of the earth!! READ this book and you can do the impossible!!
It answers my questions without having to continually confront my husband with the aweful thoughts of how he could be such a hypocrite all our married years!! What was he doing? Is he comparing me to his many different women when we had sex? Will he do it again? Will he always lie?? Is he really a good person deep down?? etc. All the questions have been answered and then some and I saw my own behaviors make the situation even worse without my knowing. I was a coaddict and codependent at different times. In only 4 months of my recovery and 18 months of his recovery we are happier than I ever thought possible!! This book takes you step by step as to what you can expect with building a healthy relationship with a recovering sex addict!! It is very detailed and gives advice from recovering addicts! It speaks in easy to understand language. It recognizes problems that can arise and gives you answers as to what to do if they happen to you!!
This was my fifth book on looking for answers to sexual addiction..Out of the Shadows was first, Secret Wars..second..Love, Sex and Infidelity, His Needs/Her Needs, and finally, with MUCH relief to my quest..DON'T CALL IT LOVE!! AFter reading this book I don't feel the need to read anymore on the subject of sexual addiction. I have more hope than I ever thought possible. The communication, Openess and honesty are first and foremost in reestablishing our relationship that was always crippled from the start of our marriage because he thought getting married would fix his problem!! It doesn't! It affects everyone around you and even the children!
If you are a sex addict or spouse, family member, friend, etc. of a sex addict..READ this book!! You will not be disappointed at all!! No book has done such a good job at laying it all out there and still keep it in healthy context for anyone to read! I saw my whole marriage and all the frustration of it take shape and form and how it brought out the worst in each of us..Now it is bringing out the very best in us with the 12 step program and this book!! Carnes can be readily credited for leading the way in developing a sound understanding of sex addiction and importantly, the treatment of this. By presenting sexually destructive behaviour within the paradigm of "addiction", Carnes has succesfully created a "problem to solution" model which offers a way out of sexually addictive behaviour. In "Don't Call it Love" Carnes offers a plan for living and a route out of this powerfully compelling condition. He manages to present a readable and coherent guide, outlining the multiple dimensions of both sex addiction and recovery from this. In his usual realisitic and compassionate style, this book makes it clear that the process of abstinence and recovery is concerned with helping "Good people get well" rather than helping "Bad people be good". Fundamentally, this book offers a clear message of hope to any person affected by sex addiction that recovery is indeed possible and importantly - enjoyable !!

Don't be put off by the subheading about sexual addiction. I have recommended this book to everyone I know. It taught me so much about what a healthy intimate relationship should be, how to build one, and how to maintain it. I bought this book trying to understand what I thought was someone else's problem and found it invaluable for my own life. What a find!!! I heartily recommend that everyone read this highly informative book, even if you feel you need to acquire a book cover to read it.

As an addictions counselor and author, I found Carnes's work to be very insigtful and helpful. He has done a wonderful job highlighting a problem that is not often discussed and certainly misunderstood. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn more about sexual addiction. Please be sure to include this title as part of your recovery.
