5 out of 5 stars Stronger than Steel is a fantistic book........2001-04-24

I read this biography in 2 sittings, it's one of the most compelling stories I've ever come across.

Sproul shows Alderson's rise in management at a steel mill in Pennsylvania and his implementation of his "value of the person" program for labor/management relations. Alderson's philosophy is perhaps the best method of that I've ever come across.

As a warehouse manager, I was greatly moved and am convinced that this is the best way for a company to operate and treat it's employees.

This is a must read for all who are in labor and management!

I found this book to be so helpful when I was pregnant. It lists prescription and nonprescription drugs and tells you whether there is any known danger to the fetus if the mother takes them. It also recommends alternatives for some drugs. The only problem with this book is that it is several years old now and is out of print.

              Description:
This paper presents an analysis of precipitation and temperature trends and a GIS-supported investigation of the related glacier change in the mountain ridges Zailiyskiy and Kungey Alatau, which represent an important part of the northern Tien Shan. The recent glacier coverage was delineated in a semi-automated way using a TM4/TM5 ratio image of a Landsat ETM Scene from the year 1999 and a merged ASTER/SRTM3-DEM. The extent of these glaciers is compared to that of the glaciers in the Soviet Glacier Inventory [UdSSR, Academica Nauk (1966 to 1983). Katalog Lednikov SSSR (in Russian), Gidrometeoizdat. Leningrad], which represents the situation in study area in approx. 1955. Regionalization of temperature and precipitation as well as solar radiation calculation was conducted in order to determine the climate situation at the glaciers. Trend and correlation analysis for the period from 1879 to 2000 at 16 climate stations showed a temperature increase, which have become pronounced since the 1950s. Another strong increase occurred at the beginning of the 1970s and since around 1980, the temperatures have generally stayed at this high level. The trend coefficient was about 0.8 K/100a for the period 1900 to 2000 and about 2.0 K/100a on average for the second half of the last century. The increase was about two times higher than the global average in northern Tien Shan from 1950 until 2000, where the increase was mainly due to temperature rise in autumn and winter. The increase is less pronounced in the mountainous areas, but still obvious. However, the higher temperature increase at the lower stations, located for the most part in cities or larger settlements, may be due in part to increased urbanization. For precipitation, there was a small increase on average, but no clear trend. On the average, the decrease in glacier extent was more than 32% between 1955 and 1999 in the investigated valleys of Zailiyskiy and Kungey Alatau. The glacier retreat was not homogeneous, but depended strongly on the size, location and climate regime at the glaciers. The area loss of the continental-type glaciers with very predominant summer accumulation, as for those situated in the deeply incised Chon-Kemin valley between Zailiyskiy and Kungey Alatau, was conspicuously less, in parts, than the loss at the more maritime glaciers on the northern slope of Zailiyskiy Alatau. This is consistent with the small increase in summer temperatures. However, under dryer conditions with high solar radiation input, such as with glaciers in the Chon-Aksu valley in Kungey Alatau, the area retreat of the continental-type glaciers can be even more pronounced than that of the more maritime glaciers.

                        Book Description

Planetary Mapping describes the history and process of mapping planets and satellites beyond the Earth. Mapping planetary bodies is a unique process much different from ordinary terrestrial cartography. The book begins with an introduction to the differences between terrestrial and planetary mapping and continues with a general discussion of the history of planetary mapping. The fundamentals of cartographic techniques are described in detail, and appendixes on map formats and projects, halftone processes for planetary maps, and available mission data are also included. The general language used in this book will make it accessible to researchers and students in planetary science as well as cartographers, photogrammetrists, geodesists, geologists, and geophysicists.

                                Book Description

Two key words define the scope of this book: 'ultrasound' and 'colloids'. Historically, there has been little real communication between disciples of these two fields. Although there is a large body of literature devoted to ultrasound phenomenon in colloids, there is little recognition that such phenomena may be of real importance for both the development, and application, of Colloid Science. From the other side, colloid scientists have not embraced acoustics as an important tool for characterizing colloids. The lack of any serious dialogue between these scientific fields is the biggest motivation behind this book.

For colloidal systems, ultrasound provides information on three important areas of particle characterization: Particle sizing, Rheology, and Electrokinetics.

This book primarily targets scientists who consider colloids as their major object of interest. As such we emphasize those aspects of acoustics that are important for colloids, and thereby neglect many others. On the other hand, scientists working with ultrasound who are already familiar with the subject will find several important new developments.

                                  Book Description

The Potyviridae represent 30 percent of all plant viruses and are economically the most important group, causing diseases on a wide range of temperate and tropical crops. The last decade has witnessed major advances in our knowledge of their molecular structure, genome organization, mode of replication and polyprotein processing and variation. In this book these new molecular insights are collated and presented in the context of accumulated information on the biology and symptomatology of this family of viruses. Including a comprehensive literature review, the volume is an essential reference for virologists and plant pathologists.

                                          Book Description

A publication of the French Society of Microscopies, Large-Angle Convergent-Beam Electron Diffraction Applications to Crystal Defects is devoted to an important aspect of electron diffraction. Convergent-beam diffraction is capable of furnishing remarkably accurate crystallographic information. In this book, the author goes well beyond a simple presentation of the method. The description of convergent-beam electron diffraction and especially of LACBED is preceded by several preparatory chapters, in which the principles of diffraction and the nature of electron-matter interactions are clearly set out. An entire chapter is concerned with instrumentation. Another on the interpretation of diffraction patterns enables the reader to master all stages in the process. The book ends with a long chapter in which numerous applications concerned with the characterization of crystal defects are examined and analyzed.

                                            Book Description

Creep experiments were conducted on aluminum single crystals and copper polycrystals deformed within the five-power-law regime. The dislocation structure of copper, which has not been extensively characterized in the past, consists of less-well-defined subgrain walls of relatively low misorientation, typically between 0.1 and 0.3 deg, with a Frank network of dislocations within the subgrains. . It was determined in this work that the lattice parameter was unchanged at the equilibrium or stress-free value within the interior of the subgrains and along (within a one-beam diameter) the subgrain boundaries.

Two of the Big 3 throw down in this collection! Wonder Woman makes a life-changing decision that drives a wedge between the Big 3 (herself, Superman, and Batman) and leads directly into "Infinite Crisis." The multiple writers and artists here make for an uneven but enjoyable collection that every DC fan needs to read.

5 out of 5 stars Great Superman Comic!.......2007-03-21

This comic was awesome to read and got it as a present and I have a lot of superman comics and all of them were great, but this one was better.I can't believe ruin was emil hamilton and I thought he was a friend to superman, but why would he betray superman. There's more to this than that and it took time to figure out who was ruin.Superman is the most powerful charcter that he can take down anyone. There's not much to say about this comic, but I assure you it is good and recommended.

5 out of 5 stars This Goes Well with Infinite Crisis Comics!.......2007-03-21

This comic was fun to read not to mention it was the countdown to infinite crisis. This comic was the sold-out story when it came out I believe. The part were superman and wonder woman fight shows who is the strongest DC charcter and wonder woman kills max lord by breaking his neck. This comic shows that superman was taken over maxwell lord and convincing that brainiac, darkseid, and ruin are threatning his loved ones, but turns out he's almost killing batman.I didn't know batman could take it when superman heat visioned him and that could nearly kill him.Even though superman's the powerfulest hero and can't be killed, sometimes he can be under someone's control. It almost fits with infinite crisis stuff.I'm not sure if this was the sold-out story, but I'm sure it is.This comic is highly recommended.

                                              5 out of 5 stars A Great Superman Story!!!!!!!!.......2007-01-08

I just finished this story today and it was a very good story. The story made sense and to the fact that it makes a good superman story. It had lots of action in it and two of superman's enemies were in it.Superman was the main charcter in this story and the ending was a nice saying:What would superman do?.I think this comic is good comparing it with other superman comic books and I have collected different superman comic books and I am going to get new ones pretty soon and after all,I am a huge superman fan. This superman comic book is recommended to any superman fan.

4 out of 5 stars Great "Infinite Crisis" compliment.......2007-01-03

Someone beat Batman to near death.

                                              Who did it?

Why is the Justice League keeping Superman at arm's length?

This story takes a character study of several members of the Justice League. The story is deeper than what most comic book fans appreciate. If you are not a deep thinker, then leave this book alone. If you only like non-stop action with little dialogue, this book isn't for you. However, if you like moral questions, character conflict, and a walk with the gods of the DC Universe, snag this book and give it a read. This is an indespensable chapter leading to the Infinite Crisis ahead!

With a nod to Jack Kirby's One Man Army Corps, The OMAC Project continues DC's inexorable path to Infinite Crisis. In addition to the OMAC Project miniseries, the trade paperback begins with the 80-page issue Countdown to Infinite Crisis, in which Ted Kord, the second Blue Beetle, investigates some financial troubles but discovers a huge plot to eliminate all "meta-humans" (that's superheroes to most of us). Attempts to involve the Justice League are unsuccessful, and with buddy Booster Gold unable to help, Kord sets out on his own. The OMAC Project might be the most engrossing of the four stages of the Prelude to Infinite Crisis. Like the rest, it can be confusing without encyclopedic knowledge of the DC Universe (and two of the interacting characters are almost indistinguishable from each other), but a background page on the key characters helps significantly. Written by (among others) Greg Rucka, with art by Jesus Saiz, Rags Morales, Cliff Richards, and others. Not included is the 2006 one-shot follow-up. --David Horiuchi

Batman's desire to keep tabs on everyone and everything that could be a problem has caused a lot of problems. Max Lord and his own somewhat sentient creation and killer satellite have their own plans, which includes turning an army of normal people into killing machines to remove superhumans and others that they see as threats to their agenda.

                                              Much carnage ensues.

This book was so good, so good, but it died such a hard death right in the middle, because they left out issues of a tie in series and instead just put a couple of paragraphs explaining what happened. But then again the only reason it was as good as it was is because of the body count in it, they basicly kill the crappy mid ninties Justice League. And the fight between Superman and Wonder Woman, was awful from a continuty view, because Superman has the power to outright kill Wonder Woman but inexplicably doesn't, and she had the ability to stop him by throwing her lasso, but waits until he nearly throws her into the sun before she does it, that fight just wasn't good. The Checkmate agent gaining some techno skin was bizzarre too, and really did not make sense to me when it happened.

The Death of Ted Kord is why you should buy this book, pretty much nothing else.

The Omac Project is basically 2 stories. The first story follows Ted Kord, the Blue Beetle as he attempts to find out why his company is losing money to something called OMAC and how the rest of earth's heroes basically dismiss him as an overactive amateur. This storyline ends in Kord's murder at the hands of his one-time friend Maxwell Lord. The second part of the story deals with Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman attempting to stop Lord and his OMAC's. This storyline is a bit more of the typical superhero story, with some shocking moments. It is the first half of the story that really drives this book. Ted Kord is written really well and really what this story proves is that there was no reason to kill Kord. His death was pointless, only made way for a new character who did not need to appear. Overall this is a good book, but it shows how there is sometimes poor reasons to kill off heroes.

Spinning out of the events of Identity Crisis, and setting the stage for the massive Infinite Crisis event, the OMAC Project is just one of the four mini-series that set up DC's current "world changing event". Collecting the six issue OMAC Project mini-series as well as the 80-page Countdown to Infinite Crisis one shot, the OMAC Project starts out with the Blue Beetle discovering that something is amiss in the super hero world, resulting in getting his brains blown out. From that point on, Batman reveals that he knows he was mindwiped by his fellow Justice Leaguers, and he has a contingency plan. Only thing is, his plan backfires when it comes under someone else's control, namely Maxwell Lord. Casual comic readers won't know much about many of the characters featured throughout this TPB besides DC's featured characters, but writer Greg Rucka surprisingly sets the stage well for the upcoming events which may prove to be cataclysmic. Also, it's more than worth mentioning the finale of the OMAC Project, with a final page that will leave readers begging for more. Undoubtadly the best of the Infinite Crisis prelude mini's, the OMAC Project manages to convey a well meaned morality tale wrapped up in a super hero soap opera, but hey, it works.
