The book provides case studies reflecting various complexities in internation HR field, however most examples are not recent enough to guide students with newer ideas associated with HR. This book is definately not for keeps.

        Customer Reviews:

        4 out of 5 stars Very informative.......2000-05-28

I will be starting med school this fall and I'm trying to prepare myself for the overload of information as best as possible. This book was very informative but a bit long (easy to loose focus at times) and I'm not sure how helpful the section on the boards (the USMLE) is since the test has changed from a two day paper-and-pencil exam to an 8 hour computer-based test (Everyone has told me that the First Aid for the USMLE series are the best books for board prep). In the Oklahoma notes, you start out by taking a modified version of the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (a psychological instrument). The results of this test went a long way towards explaining my personality and what my previous study skills where lacking. I discovered how to study better, take better notes and problem-solve based on my type. Next were different strategies for learning and retaining information for the long haul-from the next exam, to the boards, to residency and beyond. I learned terrific ways of taking notes, annotating text books, pre-reading for class and condensing the large amount of information from lectures and books. The time management sections offered very easy and realistic advise. All in all, I'm glad I bought this book because I learned many new things. However, I would strongly recommend the following book over this one if one had to choose: How to Excel in Medical School. It is easier to follow, a faster read and takes you subject by subject. If you have enough time and money, buy both!

          Book Description

Mars, the most habitable of our sister planets, holds a special place in our imaginations and in our space exploration program. Fully half of NASA's planetary exploration effort is now devoted to Mars. Key questions include: Has Mars ever harbored life? Is there life on Mars now? Will humans be able to survive on the Martian surface? Answers to these questions lie in determining the present location of water on Mars and its likely inventory in the past, and in determining the present radiation environment of Mars. The 2001 Mars Odyssey Mission contributes greatly these answers by detecting near-surface water through measurements of neutron flux, from the detection of carbonates, and the quantification of its radiation environment. This book captures the objectives, the design of the mission and the details of the instruments carried to Mars. It should be of interest to every scientist interested in participating in the on-going exploration of Mars from graduate students to senior scientists as it provides the background information essential to interpret the many exciting results now appearing from the mission.

                          Book Description

This book consists of two strongly interweaved parts: the mathematical theory of stochastic processes and its applications to molecular theories of polymeric fluids. The comprehensive mathematical background provided in the first part should be equally useful in many other branches of engineering and the natural sciences. As a benefit from the second part one gains a more direct understanding of polymer dynamics, one can more easily identify exactly solvable models, and one can develop efficient computer simulation algorithms in a straightforward manner. In view of the examples and applications to problems from the front line of science, this volume may be used as a basic textbook or as a reference book. Program examples written in FORTRAN are available via ftp from ftp.springer.de/pub/chemistry/polysim/.

                          Book Description

Animal magnetism . . . or a disturbance in the field?

What is it with female primatologists and their chimpanzees, orangutans, and gorillas? The sheer number of women in this field is startling, as are the dangers they risk pursuing their beloved subjects. Fiercely dedicated and devoted, they go to remarkable lengths to conduct their studies and to protect their great apes from poachers, revolutions, and human contamination.

It is an impressive array of scientists: Jane Goodall, of course, and Dian Fossey (who was actually killed in the field), and less celebrated women, like Mary Leakey, Shirley McGreal, Biruté Galdikas, and others, who also braved everything from civil war to enraged simians with fangs bared. Their intriguing stories are a monument to forty years of dauntless scientific endeavor. But their ineffable longing for the company of their primordial cousins, their intense identification with these primates, is an intriguing theme that runs through their professional lives at a depth that can only be described at times as intimate and mysterious.

3 out of 5 stars Nice effort; needs a little tinkering.......2002-10-19

I liked this book. It offers an informative and broad overview of the achievements in primatology during the late 20th century, particularly those of women. As a layperson, I appreciate very much that "Beauty and the Beasts" is intellectually stimulating, but not overwhelming.

The subject matter is riveting: Women who sacrifice their lives to the study of primates. They risk being mauled by the subjects of their observations, eaten by lions, gored by bulls, kidnapped, raped--by both terrorists and orang-utans--and murdered. They often sacrifice their familial relationships, the opportunities of husbands and children and social interaction with other human beings. Carole Jahme takes on an enormous amount of material in her well organized and easily accessible book.

I disagree with some of her politics, particularly regarding motherhood and infanticide. We are given case after case citing the importance of young primates fully bonding with their mothers, yet Jahme repeatedly excuses the many female primatologists she profiles for all but abandoning their young children. She also argues that infanticide is biological and defends British law which generally punishes the crime with probation and psychiatric care. I cannot excuse a mother murdering her baby, particularly in developed Western countries where women have options. Despite our biological urges, we have moral obligations to rise above nature. But these represent mere paragraphs in a highly enjoyable book.

The editing, however, is no less than criminal as it unavoidably undermines Jahme's scholarly credibility. There are numerous grammatical errors and confusing sentences. Most unfortunate are the several dozen typos. Of the most notable are on page 240 where we are informed that "Picasso also sketched a money painting a nude woman" and on pages 299-300 where primatologist Amy Parish is twice referred to as "Paris" rather than Parish. This is inexcusable.

I also find the title and cover design/photograph inappropriate. Both seem a bit trite for this intellectual undertaking and tend to perpetuate the stereotype of lovely Western white women in the jungle living as one with the animals.

All criticisms aside, I recommend this book. It offers insightful perspectives toward the evolution of human beings and the sentience of all life--there is God in everything. We are left with the realization that though we as the dominant species can sing arias and build hospitals, we are not entitled to hold barbaric dominion over earth. "Beauty and the Beasts" is a worthwhile read (though I might wait for a revised edition).

2 out of 5 stars Disorganized and Juvenile.......2002-07-23

This book was a great idea, and Jahme has gathered loads of interesting data. Unfortunately, she has no idea how to organize it or write about it. She writes like a C student in a freshman composition class. It is incredibly frustrating to try to follow any line of argument or indeed any narrative in this book, because it is constantly being interrupted by anything else that is on Jahme's mind at the moment, relevant or not. Everything makes her think of something else, and so the anecdote or argument originally being developed gets left far, far behind. This lack of organization in itself would be endurable if Jahme did not have a very juvenile writing style as well. I was appalled that the manuscript was accepted for publication: the editor should have insisted that Jahme work with a ghost writer.

This book does a real disservice to the intelligent, dedicated women who have devoted themselves to primatology. Readers would be better served by reading the excellent books of primate researcher Sue Savage-Rumbaugh.

5 out of 5 stars An informative and exceptionally well written text.......2001-10-15

That 62% of all primatologists who study chimpanzees, orangutans, and gorillas in hazardous and arduous terrains all over the world are women. Given the rigors of the fieldwork, this is nothing short of amazing. Some were once recruited to the field by Dr. Louis Leakey because he believed women to be more empathic and less biased observers than their male counterparts. He was right! These women range from the famous (Jane Goodall, Dian Fossey, and Mark Leakey) to those known only within their profession (Shirley McGrill, Birute Galdikas), to others known only in obscurity. Beauty And The Beasts is the story of these women as authoritatively related by primatologist and documentary film maker Carole Jahme. The informative and exceptionally well written text is enhanced with an impressive section of photographs and tidbits of trivia (Maureen O'Sullivan, who played "Jane" in the Tarzan movies, couldn't abide Jiggs, who played Tarzan's chimpanzee companion "Cheeta"). Beauty And The Beasts is a very strongly recommended title for academic and community library collections, primatology students, and the non-specialist general reader with an interest in the history of primatology.

5 out of 5 stars Why are the majority of primatologists women?.......2001-09-12

What impulse lures some women to abandon home and career for a harsh world studying primates in jungles? Carole Jahme's Beauty And The Beasts examines the psyche and methods of women who have pioneered primate studies, and who have followed Leakey's venture into the world of primatology, as field scientists. The intriguing question of why the majority of primatologists are women makes for added intrigue as chapters examine these women and their work.

                          5 out of 5 stars Well-organized, with fascinating anecdotes.......2001-07-25

The great apes share more than 98 percent of our DNA and in the last 40 years women have come to dominate the study of our closest relatives. Today 62 percent of primatologists are women. British primatologist Jahme's anecdotal overview of primate research focuses on the women who have shaped the field since Jane Goodall ("The Chimpanzees of Gombe," "Reason for Hope") established her chimp site at Gombe in 1958. Though women have made most of the startling discoveries about wild primate behavior, it was a man, Louis Leakey, who got it all started. Believing that the study of apes would enhance our knowledge of human evolution and convinced that women were more patient and observant than men, and therefore more suited to fieldwork, Leakey encouraged Jane Goodall's interest in wildlife and steered her to chimps. Inspired by Goodall's work, Leakey's other two "trimates", Dian Fossey ("Gorillas in the Mist") and Biruté Galdikas ("Reflections of Eden") achieved similarly impressive results studying gorillas and orangutans.

Jahme strikes a good balance between the work and the women, relating the dangers and controversies along with the triumphs. Jane Goodall left Gombe for two years after she was nearly abducted by terrorists in 1975 (four other workers were taken and later ransomed) and she has been criticized for influencing chimp behavior by using feeding stations (a practice she also now condemns). Dian Fossey was only in the Congo a few months when she was kidnapped and repeatedly raped by soldiers in 1967. She was the last white person to escape the Eastern Congo and all she wanted to do was get back to her gorillas, which she did, establishing a base on the Rwandan side of the mountain. Over the years her reputation for eccentricity grew as she risked her life and battled poachers and eco-tourism in an effort to save her beloved gorillas from extinction. Fossey was murdered in December 1985 and Jahme believes her sacrifice saved the gorillas, at least for now. Birute Galdikas has all but sacrificed her scientific reputation in her passion to save the rain forests and the orangutans of Borneo.

But Jahme moves far beyond the three leading ladies of primate study. She discusses Sarah Hrdy's discovery of the link between female promiscuity and male infanticide, Jo Thompson's study of the female-bonded bonobos, Sue Savage-Rumbaugh's work with apes and language, Thelma Rowell's successful challenge of male dominance theories among baboons, Barbara Smuts' work with chimps, dolphins and baboons. Just to name a few.

She explores how understanding of primate behavior has helped shape our understanding of human evolution and how field observation overturned the traditional male approaches and assumptions, until science came to embrace the idea that animals have emotions and are capable of love, murder and tool use. She profiles the women who rehabilitate captive chimps into the wild, sacrificing years of their lives in an effort that, more often than not, seems to end in death and heartbreak. She explores the lives of captive chimps in showbusiness, in American Sign Language programs, in zoos and laboratories. Captive apes, we learn, love to watch TV. A universally favorite movie is "Quest for Fire." Jiggs, star of the early Tarzan movies, and at 68, the oldest chimp in captivity, prefers his own performances above all.

The book's scope is tremendously ambitious and Jahme manages to interview almost everyone she mentions. It's a massive feat of organization, so well done it seems almost seamless. There is so much fascinating source material that the choice of what to leave out must have been daunting. In each chapter she presents biographical and research anecdotes that best illustrate the work and the people conducting it.

Her decision to include details of the personal and sexual lives of these prominent field researchers serves to underscore points of commonality with their animal subjects and to illustrate a pattern - an inability or unwillingness to commit to human relationships. With few exceptions, these women put non-human primates first.

While Jahme's prose is less than scintillating (nothing a good editor couldn't have fixed), her writing is clear, accessible and entertaining. It's an excellent introduction to the community of primate research and may spark interest in a broad audience. Her extensive (partial) bibliography will steer interested readers to more in-depth studies, particularly the many fascinating books of the field researchers Jahme profiles.

                            Book Description

The use of quantum chemistry for the quantitative prediction of molecular properties has long been frustrated by the technical difficulty of carrying out the needed computations. In the last decade there have been substantial advances in the formalism and computer hardware needed to carry out accurate calculations of molecular properties efficiently. These advances have been sufficient to make quantum chemical calculations a reliable tool for the quantitative interpretation of chemical phenomena and a guide to laboratory experiments. However, the success of these recent developments in computational quantum chemistry is not well known outside the community of practitioners. In order to make the larger community of chemical physicists aware of the current state of the subject, this self-contained volume of Advances in Chemical Physics surveys a number of the recent accomplishments in computational quantum chemistry.

This stand-alone work presents the cutting edge of research in computational quantum mechanics. Supplemented with more than 150 illustrations, it provides evaluations of a broad range of methods, including:
                            * Quantum Monte Carlo methods in chemistry
                            * Monte Carlo methods for real-time path integration
                            * The Redfield equation in condensed-phase quantum dynamics

Santa Fe police chief Kevin Kerney is back in the tenth and most entertaining novel in Michael McGarrity's acclaimed series. At the urging of an old friend, Kerney takes a job as a technical advisor on a contemporary Western being filmed near the Mexican border-and becomes embroiled in circumstances that will change his and his family's lives forever.

2 out of 5 stars A "troubling" effort for McGarrity.......2007-10-10

I have to agree with those who lambast this effort. It was the first of the series I read and I was going to stop here. I didn't, and discovered that when McGarrity writes about what he knows he is more than serviceable for the genre.

Kerney is a little like Harry Bosch but more likable and less neurotic (much less neurotic). McGarrity has the same bad habit Michael Connelly has of making his hero supernaturally prescient (maybe its an Irish thing). When they instinctively don't like somebody you can count on that person being a killer, crook or a bureaucratic idiot. They are both respectful of women but the women generally are written unrealistically, usually sympathetic and sexy or bitchy and sexy. It comes across as old fashioned and patronizing. That may have been how Mickey and Raymond did it but we should be past that.
It would appear that Mr. McGarrity, presumably of Irish descent and in the chips from this successful series, decided to take a tax deductible trip to Ireland (tax deductible because it was "research" for a new book). Perhaps a movie is being made using one of his stories as well so he has been working as a technical advisor. In any case he includes locales and concepts that have no place in the series. In addition the mystery involving Kerney is just a rehash of the poaching segment from Mexican Hat, right down to the killer conveniently dispatching an underling right in front of Kerney. Police procedurals are much easier to write when the story line doesn't require the writer to plot out how the evidence to convict the bad guy is uncovered. Just have a poacher or a smuggler commit premeditated murder in front of the hero. See, police investigation isn't hard.
The Irish segment seems patched together as well, the criminal does his best to make it easy and Kerney's wife (the, of course, beautiful, red-haired, green eyed, Sara) charms a senior Irish detective into doing her bidding without demur.
All in all this was one big mistake. Hopefully McGarrity realizes it and goes back to what he can do fairly well- provide a reasonably plotted mystery while taking us on a cook's tour of a part of the country few see up close. I suspect that, at some point, the successful mystery series writer feels that he or she needs to freshen things up to keep the readership off balance and coming back for more. What they seem not to realize is that, if they do a good job with the basics, the readership doesn't really expect Steven King and will sign up for each new chapter willingly. That is how successful television series have worked for decades. This type of entertainment really isn't any different.

Well I haven't even finished the book and have all kinds of problems. I usually read three or more books at a time and manage to keep them all straight. One at work, one at home at my desk and one at home in the bathroom (where else?).

'Nothing but Trouble' has a problem. It is very involved with subplots all over the place and very boring. I'm 1/4 Irish and have an Irish last name but even I get bored with the descriptions of Ireland and how beautiful and European it is. I much prefer Santa Fe...by the way, McGarrity, get back to it, Santa Fe, that is. I am bored to tears.

The name McGarrity reminds me of the old TV series Hawaii Five-0 in which the character Jack Lord played was McGarritt. This novel has none of the action of that TV show, though, and I'm seriously thinking of giving it up. I got it at a cheap price, so I'm not out much. The sad thing is I love books, much more than TV anyway.

For the record 'Nothing but Trouble' is my bathroom book, 'The Colorado Kid' by Stephen King is my desk book and my work book is 'The Measure of a Man' by Sidney Poitier.

                            5 out of 5 stars Great Read.......2007-09-03

Just loved the book, McGarrity is a great writer, very captivating and he describes New Mexico in such an excellent way, you truly picture the places that are very familiar to me.

4 out of 5 stars You've got to read this in chronogical order.......2007-03-15

None of my reviews discuss the plot. That's because I prefer to read books "blind" so I don't even know what type of book I'm getting into. I don't even read the flyleafs, just a minimum scan to let me know it's not romance or something like that. And I figure, if you want to know the plot, you can read the descriptions. I just try to detail what I like or dislike about them.

                            Spoilers ahead

This was the first McGarrity book I read and had my head spinning afterwards. After reading other McGarrity books and looking through some of the reviews I finally know why. You've got to read the Keven Kearney books in chronological order, otherwise they won't make sense to you as the characters develop through the series.

When I read this book, thought the Sara subplot was very strange. It got introduced fairly well but the subplot didn't end. Now I know that it will probably end with the next KK book. When I read the "prequel" to this book "Slow to kill" I was wondering at the way the book finished abruptly but now I know it was just to be continued.

I still gave this book high marks because McGarrity's style is easy to read and I'm familiar with the characters, they're like old friends. You've got to get used to his rushed endings though.

The best things for me are the way he details police procedure during the investigations. Some reviews find them boring, but I find it relaxing to read. To each their own. You either like these books or you don't, and the books are so formulaic that you'll find out within 1 book whether you like them or not.

1 out of 5 stars What has happened to editors? Don't bother with this........2007-02-08

Santa Fe Police Chief Kevin Kerney is persuaded, by a childhood friend, to take the job of technical advisor for a film. But Kevin soon finds himself involved in a murder investigation that may tie into the smuggling of illegal immigrants and organized crime.

Having read to page 120 with very little having happened except three occasions of appalling bad sentence structure (pages 1, 101 and 120) and even worse editing for the errors not having been corrected, I give up. There is one crime solved fairly early in the book that seems to have no connection with the rest of the story. Other than Kerney's wife and his friend's mother, other women are portrayed as troubled, vapid, and all of them sexually aggressive. The information on film making is interesting but, slightly more than one-third of the way into the story, does not seem to have much to do with the mystery. This was three storied in one, and all were bad. It's a book in desperate search for a strong editor and rewrites. I've way too many more books waiting to be read to waste my time with this.
