5 out of 5 stars Truely "hands-on" learning from the ground up........2003-05-20

This book is an ideal textbook for the person who knows nothing at all about Accounting. It is also good for the person who needs a refresher course on the basics. Combine it with "VIKING MARINE", A business simulation (ISBN number 0-538-60627-4) which is the "hands-on" portion of the package, and you have everything you need to fully understand the basics of Bookkeeping/Accounting.

Book Description

If It's Broken, You Can Fix It blows the lid off the problem of dysfunction in the workplace. It helps managers step back, recognize both the subtle and overt symptoms, and begin administering some serious cures. This easy to read book gives managers ready to use tools to strike at the heart of dysfunction and a blueprint to overcome it. Through colorful stories and illustrated models, leaders learn how to point dysfunctional followers in the right direction as they search for solutions...how to create a respectful atmosphere where teams can flourish...how to build healthy relationships that thrive on purpose rather than personality.

5 out of 5 stars If It's Broken, You Can Fix It.......2000-06-24

Excellent book for the OD professional and the manager alike. In his usual very effective style, Dr. Jones' "lessons" are very readable, practical, and understandable, with just the right mix of humor, metaphors and stories. His use of actual experiences serve to effectively demonstrate the "real-life" usefulness and value of the techniques he describes. Every organization experiences dysfunction, to one degree or another, and can, therefore, benefit from the guidance Dr. Jones provides in this book.

5 out of 5 stars Workplace dysfunction: more common than you realise!.......2000-04-03

During my long working career I have partcipated in numerous courses, got advice from the best consultants and read lots of complicated theories. This is the first book that gives clear and practical advice to identify and solve the problems of an dysfunctional organization. I recommend Jones's book warmly to everyone who is interested in improving the quality of the activity of his organization.

5 out of 5 stars Lightbulb ON!.......2000-03-29

I believe that any reader will easily recognize the corporate situations that the author describes - it's the stuff we live with every day at work. The "aha!" comes along with the author's insightful discussions of HOW and WHY these situations come to exist, and why they are so very frustrating. But the best part is the practical "here's what you can do about it" discussions. This book shows you how you can have some impact, how these situations can be addressed constructively.

5 out of 5 stars Great Resource for Government and Private Sector Managers.......2000-03-28

Thanks to Tom Jones for providing an invaluable resource for today's Managers -- both in Government and Private organizations -- for advice on addressing today's workplace problems.

5 out of 5 stars We are not alone!.......2000-03-26

Those of us who are not CEO's or even at management level will find this book useful. It helped me recognize the signs of dysfunction in our organization, as well as identify methods to affect change or influence work behavior from a lower-level employee's perspective. I especially like the personality profiling information, which gives an explanation and a tolerance for the ways my fellow workers perform their work and react to pressure in the workplace. We don't all have to be the same to function as a cohesive and productive unit. Our strengths, weaknesses, and uniqueness can be useful when combined to make powerful teams and successful changes. I recommend this book as a helpful tool for any level of employee.

    Book Description

In 1863 the Din began receiving medical care from the federal government during their confinement at Bosque Redondo. Over the next ninety years, a familiar litany of problems surfaced in periodic reports on Navajo health care: inadequate funding, understaffing, and the unrelenting spread of such communicable diseases as tuberculosis. In 1955 Congress transferred medical care from the Indian Bureau to the Public Health Service.

The Din accepted some aspects of Western medicine, but during the nineteenth century most government physicians actively worked to destroy age-old healing practices. Only in the 1930s did doctors begin to work withrather than opposetraditional healers. Medicine men associated illness with the supernatural and the disruption of nature's harmony. Indian service doctors familiar with Navajo culture eventually accepted traditional medicine as a valuable complement to their health care.

With animals, the jackal is prepotent over the dog, as is stated by Flourens, who made many crosses between these animals; and this was likewise the case with a hybrid which I once saw between a jackal and a terrier. I cannot doubt, from the observations of Colin and others, that the ass is prepotent over the horse; the prepotency in this instance running more strongly through the male than through the female ass.

                          Book Description

1885. Part One of Two. Darwin, the British naturalist who became famous for his theories of evolution and natural selection, writes in the introduction: The object of this work is not to describe all the many races of animals which have been domesticated by man, and of the plants which have been cultivated by him; even if I possessed the requisite knowledge, so gigantic an undertaking would be here superfluous. It is my intention to give under the head of each species only such facts as I have been able to collect or observe, showing the amount and nature of the changes which animals and plants have undergone whilst under man's dominion, or which bear on the general principles of variation. Contents: Domestic Dogs and Cats; Horses and Asses; Pigs-Cattle-Sheep-Goats; Domestic Rabbits; Domestic Pigeons; Fowls; Duck-Goose-Peacock-Turkey-Guinea Fowl-Canary Bird-Goldfish-Hive Bees-Silk Moths; Cultivated Plants: Cereal and Culinary Plants; Fruits-Ornamental Trees-Flowers; On Bud Variation and On Certain Anomalous Modes of Reproduction and Variation; and Inheritance. The publication of "On the Origin of Species" in 1859 ignited a public storm. Having offered offered his book as a contribution to science, Darwin discovered to his dismay that it was received as an affront by many scientists & as a sacrilege by the clergy. To answer the criticism of his theory, Darwin published 2 vol. in 1868 to demonstrate that evolution was obvious to any observer of nature. Darwin assembled a mass of proof -- & a hypothesis about species reversion. Vol. 1 contains a meticulous analysis of various aspects of plant & animal life, including an inventory of varieties & their physical & behavioral characteristics, & an invest'n. of the impact of a species surrounding environ. & the role that both natural & forced changes in this environ. have had.

Fingersmith is the third slice of engrossing lesbian Victoriana from Sarah Waters. Although lighter and more melodramatic in tone than its predecessor, Affinity, this hypnotic suspense novel is awash with all manner of gloomy Dickensian leitmotifs: pickpockets, orphans, grim prisons, lunatic asylums, "laughing villains," and, of course, "stolen fortunes and girls made out to be mad." Divided into three parts, the tale is narrated by two orphaned girls whose lives are inextricably linked. Waters's penchant for byzantine plotting can get a bit exhausting, but even at its densest moments--and remember, this is smoggy London circa 1862--it remains mesmerizing. A damning critique of Victorian moral and sexual hypocrisy, a gripping melodrama, and a love story to boot, this book ingeniously reworks some truly classic themes. --Travis Elborough, Amazon.co.uk

4 out of 5 stars Deceit, Love and Tragedy.......2007-09-23

I chipped away at the first half of this book for about three weeks, reading bits at a time but not being drawn into it as a "page turner". It just didn't grab me initially. Finally, with a chunk of dedicated "read time" during an 18 hour flight, I knocked out the second half of the book. I was very glad to have stuck with and finished the book as it ended up being a story very much worth reading.

The characters are wonderful and I learned early on that I shouldn't judge a character too early because what they may appear to be will likely drastically change with the developing plot. Not surprising if one stops to think about what these characters are, namely sheisters, thieves, less-than-reputable citizens and a few with somewhat odd perversions.

In the end, the elements of consiparcy, double-crossing, love, eroticism, deceit, mystery and tragedy combine to make a very good read. And Ms. Waters' excellent presentation style is an added bonus.

4 out of 5 stars Fingersmith: beyond manual dexterity.......2007-08-31

I first read this novel in 2002 and revisited it recently.

Ms Waters weaves a clever story set in the mid 19th century. Her novel is richly peopled with rogues and charlatans. Sue Trinder, the protagonist, may well be naive but she is not innocent. The story is full of twists and turns, of plots and cunning plans. Some of the characters are likeable and others are most assuredly not.

The story drew in in from the beginning and held my attention throughout.

Recommended for readers of historical fiction set in a London which will be familiar to readers of Charles Dickens.

                                        4 out of 5 stars Clever .......2007-07-04

Clever, but not to be reviewed in too much detail, it will simply spoil the plot. Loved the main characters, miss them already now i've finished reading. Waters writes a proper story, with a proper plot, which seems complicated for a while, but at the end is surprisingly simple. Attempting to predict outcomes throughout the novel, i found myself quite stumped on several occasions; my entire bi-weekly swim was dominated one morning with vainly figuring a way of solving the outcome of one particular section of the novel...the things we do! It is in many ways Dickensian, but again, i don't want to say too much there, for fear of spoiling things. Suspense, romance, thievery, deceit and more,in a most persuasive narrative.

Awesome. One of the best books I have read in a long time. It took twists and turns that I would have never predicted. You won't be able to put in down.

In the style of Charles Dickens, this novel is set in London in a time of pickpockets and other sorts of perverse characters.
