White Man's Medicine: Government Doctors and the Navajo, 1863-1955
Robert A. Trennert Manufacturer: University of New Mexico Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0826318398 |
Book Description
In 1863 the Din began receiving medical care from the federal government during their confinement at Bosque Redondo. Over the next ninety years, a familiar litany of problems surfaced in periodic reports on Navajo health care: inadequate funding, understaffing, and the unrelenting spread of such communicable diseases as tuberculosis. In 1955 Congress transferred medical care from the Indian Bureau to the Public Health Service. The Din accepted some aspects of Western medicine, but during the nineteenth century most government physicians actively worked to destroy age-old healing practices. Only in the 1930s did doctors begin to work withrather than opposetraditional healers. Medicine men associated illness with the supernatural and the disruption of nature's harmony. Indian service doctors familiar with Navajo culture eventually accepted traditional medicine as a valuable complement to their health care.

With animals, the jackal is prepotent over the dog, as is stated by Flourens, who made many crosses between these animals; and this was likewise the case with a hybrid which I once saw between a jackal and a terrier. I cannot doubt, from the observations of Colin and others, that the ass is prepotent over the horse; the prepotency in this instance running more strongly through the male than through the female ass.Download Description

Book Description
1885. Part One of Two. Darwin, the British naturalist who became famous for his theories of evolution and natural selection, writes in the introduction: The object of this work is not to describe all the many races of animals which have been domesticated by man, and of the plants which have been cultivated by him; even if I possessed the requisite knowledge, so gigantic an undertaking would be here superfluous. It is my intention to give under the head of each species only such facts as I have been able to collect or observe, showing the amount and nature of the changes which animals and plants have undergone whilst under man's dominion, or which bear on the general principles of variation. Contents: Domestic Dogs and Cats; Horses and Asses; Pigs-Cattle-Sheep-Goats; Domestic Rabbits; Domestic Pigeons; Fowls; Duck-Goose-Peacock-Turkey-Guinea Fowl-Canary Bird-Goldfish-Hive Bees-Silk Moths; Cultivated Plants: Cereal and Culinary Plants; Fruits-Ornamental Trees-Flowers; On Bud Variation and On Certain Anomalous Modes of Reproduction and Variation; and Inheritance. Fingersmith

Fingersmith is the third slice of engrossing lesbian Victoriana from Sarah Waters. Although lighter and more melodramatic in tone than its predecessor, Affinity, this hypnotic suspense novel is awash with all manner of gloomy Dickensian leitmotifs: pickpockets, orphans, grim prisons, lunatic asylums, "laughing villains," and, of course, "stolen fortunes and girls made out to be mad." Divided into three parts, the tale is narrated by two orphaned girls whose lives are inextricably linked. Waters's penchant for byzantine plotting can get a bit exhausting, but even at its densest moments--and remember, this is smoggy London circa 1862--it remains mesmerizing. A damning critique of Victorian moral and sexual hypocrisy, a gripping melodrama, and a love story to boot, this book ingeniously reworks some truly classic themes. --Travis Elborough, Amazon.co.ukBook Description
