Invaluable Reference Guide for Human Resources Personnel.......2005-07-30
Human Resource managers and specialists have a lot of legal material to learn. They have to keep up with the latest changes in the laws that affect the way they handle employees and the way they administer benefits. This guide, updated each year since its initial release, is designed to help human resource personnel find the answers to legal questions.
The most striking feature of this guide is its length. It is more than 1,100 pages long and contains 43 chapters. It needs to be this way, of course, to encompass all of the different laws pertaining to human resource management. It covers most everything about HR one can imagine, from rules and regulations regarding hiring and terminating to laws covering sexual harassment and pension administration.
Even though this book is a very good resource, there are still a few things you will not be able to find. The primary function of this reference guide is to provide an overview of the federal laws. Thus, many of the laws unique to the individual states are not discussed here. There are a few exceptions, but there are many state- specific questions this guide will not be able to answer. This is what happened to me one day when I consulted this book for an answer regarding workmen's compensation. It didn't have what I needed to know about my state, so I had to look elsewhere. Still, it pointed me in the right direction so it did have its use.
The organization of this book is ok, but some things about it are a little cumbersome. The table of contents, for example, doesn't include page numbers. Instead, it references the various pages based on the chapter number and the subsection (for example, "23.02" means turn to chapter 23, and then look for the second section). I think it would be better if it showed the page number.
There are plenty of references in this guide to specific court cases, pointing out new decisions and how they were decided. Human Resource laws change all the time, which is why a book like this becomes outdated quickly. Fortunately, the author of this handy guide updates it every year with a new release. It's a large, bulky book that may not be organized in the most efficient way, but is still invaluable as reference guide for HR personnel.
Rabbi Trust.......2003-07-10
Your a teacher and don't know what a Rabbi Trust is? Shame on you. Look it up and learn it and stop thinking everyone is Anti-Semitic. As a Jewish man I take offense to your comment.
Shilling's Text is Jam Packed.......1998-09-16
I am using this book for a master's level personnel law course. It covers all the topics quite thoroughly. It might be useful as a quick selective reference tool for HR administrators unfamiliar with one or more of the specialty areas. Some chapters (such as the one on benefits and the one on pensions) might benefit from another look at organization of the material. However, most of the information is accurate, if necessarily streamlined in many areas. Since personnel law now covers several deeply specialized areas, this is not surprising.
Stylistically, the book's sentences are jam-packed with information. This might prove difficult reading for some. In a few cases, a series of issues will be "hidden" by a single sentence that is oversimplified, but this is apparent only to a reader who is familiar with the field. The advantage is that the author has made a very creditable attempt to address all the issues. The author generally avoids drawing temporal or one-sided conclusions, which may mislead in a field that is fraught with disputes. I appreciate the even-handedness of this approach.
One small but annoying detail. On page 220 is a reference to a "rabbi trust". I took offense at the use of this term in the book, without quotation marks. I think later editions should avoid or explain the use of language which is apparently bigoted. In fact, I will recommend that my students not use this term because I can offer no good explanation for its continuance.

Book Description
The first spacecraft to explore the secrets of the Sun, Jupiter, Saturn, and the void beyond Pluto, the Pioneer space probes have been the trailblazers of the space age, truly going where no man has gone before.
Emblazoned with the nude figures of a man and a woman, etched representations of our human form, the Pioneer generation of probes were aptly named. Launched into the inky depths of space, they were more than mere machines, they were humanity's first emissaries into deep space. And the pictorial inscriptions that adorned the crafts embodied the hopes and dreams of everyone involved in the Pioneer program. They were our humble attempt to communicate with the extraterrestrial intelligent life we imagined the probes might encounter
they were our message in a bottle.
Perhaps the most efficient, reliable, and cost effective program to come out of NASA, the Pioneer missions are a shining example of how a small and talented group of people can, against all odds, pull something off that has never been done before. Indeed, more than thirty years after its launch in 1972, Pioneer 10 is still cruising into interstellar space, sending back data as it courses through the galaxy while Pioneer 6, in solar orbit, is more than 35 years old and humankind's oldest functioning spacecraft. But despite their enduring contributions, the Pioneer project remains a footnote in space history, little more than a humble prologue to its inheritors.
The Depths of Space recounts the long overdue history of Pioneer both as a scientific and technological achievement and as the story of the exceptional people who made the program possible. This tight narrative captures the black-coffee buzz of full-throttle, deadline-driven production, the sharp, intense thrill of discovery, the pang of anxiety that accompanies looming danger and ultimate loss, and the satisfaction and pride of creating an enduring legacy.
Customer Reviews:
An excellent book for the curious non-engineer.......2005-09-07
"The Depths of Space" by Mark Wolverton includes all the details for those of us who weren't born or were too young to know when these remarkable spacecraft began their journeys. Mr. Wolverton's tale shows the politics and competition between NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory and the Ames Research Center in the early days of spaceflight primarily through the stories of Pioneers 10 and 11, though without neglecting the other flights of the Pioneer series. For those interested in the history of NASA and spaceflight, this book is an excellent place to start. The Pioneer series of flights racked up a long list of "firsts", not to mention blazing the trail for JPL's Voyagers in the 1970's and 1980's. Pioneers 10 and 11 got there first, scouting ahead for the much more celebrated Voyagers a decade later. Mr. Wolverton's book is a solid first step in remembering the often overlooked and forgotten Pioneers.
Wonderful book on an interesting topic.......2004-11-15
The Pioneer missions were important milestones in the exploration of space. The book is a nice, concise and well-written history of the Pioneer program, from the early and unsuccessful probes flown by the military in the immediate post-Sputnik era to the trail-blazing missions to Jupiter, Saturn and Venus. All of the book was interesting, but I thought that the story of how Ames Research Center got involved in deep space exploration, the maneuvering to get access to the Deep Space Network, and the continued gathering of data from Pioneers 10 and 11 long after their primary missions ended to be particularly interesting and never before told. I wish that the book had been a little longer, with some more detail about the spacecraft and their scientific findings. Also the meager selection of small black and white photos is inadequate. But those are minor points and this book is a must-have if the subject interests you.
Nice book, emphasizing the human factor.......2004-10-18
This is a great book on NASA's Pioneer project (not only the well-known - though already half-forgotten - Pioneer 10 and 11 missions to Jupiter and Saturn, but the whole series, including the highly successful 1978 mission to Venus). Very well written and researched, by a very talented young author, who's definitely in love with his subject. As the foreword of astronomer James van Allen states correctly, this book is first of all `a tale of human achievement', i.e. the emphasis of this book is very much on the project as such and on the people that made it possible (and how they did it). Wolverton does pay substantial attention to technical issues and to the scientific results of the various missions, it's true, but I would have preferred him going into more detail on all these things, providing more data and explaining more of the scientific achievements. To my tastes, he spends too much time discussing `the human factor' and the adventure side of it. But then again, this is the book's explicit `mission'. It just wasn't exactly what I expected, although I enjoyed it very much (especially the story about the controversy around the famous plaque with the naked couple on it, and on the old DEC PDP 11-14 `mini-`computer that was still being used in 2000 to communicate with Pioneer 10). So, this book is highly recommended and a Must for space buffs. It's also a very beautiful book, solid and robust. It's a bit of a pity that the - not too many - photographs and pictures are all in black-and-white. You can look into the book (all of the pages, and with color pictures!!!) on the publisher's website.
Informative historical overview of the Pioneer space probe.......2004-09-09
The Depths Of Space: The Story Of The Pioneer Planetary Probes by by author and NASA expert Mark Wolverton provides the reader with an informed and informative historical overview of the Pioneer space probe mission program that saw the first mission launched in August 17, 1958 that had the misfortune to blow up 77 seconds into lift off. But every failure was a learning experience and subsequent missions ventured to probe the sun, go beyond the asteroid belt, went on to Jupiter, Saturn, and finally out of the solar system and on to the stars. Superbly written, The Depths Of Space is a seminal and enthusiastically recommended addition to personal and community library Space Exploration History reading lists and reference shelves.

Book Description
Planetary nebulae have been favorite targets of amateur astronomers for a long time. This is at least in part because of their high surface brightness and ability to show visible color.
The popularity of observing planetary nebulae is due to the fact that there are targets amongst this set of objects for observers with small telescopes to those with large telescopes. The use of the nebula filter also means that, unlike galaxies, they can be observed from light polluted environments.
Apart from the classic Messier four – M27, 57, 76 and 97 – there are a many bright NGC planetary nebulae, and even some IC ones that show both colour and structure in average size amateur telescopes. They are popular targets with CCD imagers because their size allows them to fit on the high resolution CCD images now being generated.
Although the theory sections of this book are intended mainly for experienced amateur astronomers, Planetary Nebulae: their Physics and Observation will also appeal to relative newcomers who are keen to learn more about these fascinating objects.
This book is a detailed guide to understanding and observing planetary nebulae. It explains the theories of what planetary nebulae are, their origins and physics, and the history of their discovery. It describes what tools are needed to observe and image them. There is a comprehensive catalog of planetary nebulae with descriptions, drawings and images. Finally, it provides a challenging list of objects for practical amateurs to observe.

Book Description
Before Henry Guerlac's book, we knew little about the reasons that led the great chemist Antoine-Laurent Lavoisier to discover the role of air in combustion. Henry Guerlac finds that this breakthrough that began the Chemical Revolution did not come ex nihilo, as many historians claim. Rather, it marked the culmination of research by British and French chemists, radically refashioned by Lavoisier and his disciples. Henry Guerlac portrays Lavoisier integrating Continental and British chemical traditions. Like New ton in physics and Darwin in biology, Lavoisier was a revolutionary. This work presents his in a vigorous and innovative light.

Book Description
Gilgamesh is considered one of the masterpieces of world literature, but until now there has not been a version that is a superlative literary text in its own right. Acclaimed by critics and scholars, Stephen Mitchell's version allows us to enter an ancient masterpiece as if for the first time, to see how startlingly beautiful, intelligent, and alive it is.
Customer Reviews:
"The epic of the fear of death".......2007-09-24
I read Mitchell's freer version immediately after Andrew George's Penguin Classic (also reviewed by me). Readers need to remember how incomplete our Gilgamesh story remains for us today. The plot breaks or perplexing contexts are not the fault of its translators or retellers. George-- editor of the first scholarly edition in English-- meticulously keeps the brackets and the italics that expose modern concessions to our ignorance. The two-thirds of the epic estimated that we have today fills with conjectures; the spaces, and the breaks intervene over thousands of years to keep us from the complete epic that once existed. I wonder if may still be revived among the thousands of untranslated tablets that keep being unearthed.
Mitchell admits his lack of Akkadian and his reliance on experts. Many criticize Mitchell's attempt; he has a long career -- reminding me of Ezra Pound's efforts to render the archaic Chinese into vibrant English despite his lack of academic training-- in popularizing scholarly effort so a wider audience can enjoy the tales vigorously and fluently told. So, be warned that this is not a crib or a line-by-line equivalence. This being said, in his defense, the endnotes Mitchell provides often show carefully how he has changed the original word-for-word translations into more poetic form. He retells, therefore, an exciting and moving tale.
Most beginners-- thus educated-- may find a "version" such as Stephen Mitchell's easier to start with for an overview of the storyline, and a briefer introduction-cum-commentary and helpful textual notes that follow the story proper. The poem itself is not lengthy, and can be read easily. From here, moving on to more accurate translations could reward the still curious. But, for many who want the story and not the scholarship, the sufficient introduction, comments, and glossary here will satisfy the curious first-time reader. I returned to this after thirty-plus years and profited from a mature encounter with a text that for a teenager proved too enigmatic. Intriguingly, talking with my own fourteen-year-old son who had read the poem for school, he found Gilgamesh and Enkidu far more recognizably like ourselves than stoic Beowulf or stern Aeneas! Many want also to bowdlerize or censor the few sexual encounters, but I defend Mitchell's claims for the primacy of the civilizing power of the erotic as dramatized sparely but evocatively in the suggestive verse. Speaking of relevance for teens, the slanging sparring verbal showdown between Inanna and Gilgamesh rivals any rapper's challenge today.
George aimed for precision in his translation, and while I liked the careful results, they did aim at academics in their vocabulary. which tended occasionally towards the overly technical or remained awkward. Mitchell chooses more explicit terms for action; he shows an awareness to entertain the reader whereas George may seek to inform the student. Mitchell's also considerably more erotic and develops passages that in their original state, reading George, remain terse. So, be aware of these crucial differences between the more accurate and the more vivid words.
Reviewers have shown surprise that Mitchell makes reference to the current destruction in Iraq. Yet, the irony that this tale is set amidst death, the longing to be one with the gods, battles with fearsome foes, contentious marketplaces, angry citizens, and terrifying journeys shows how narratives of human concerns age but little. The story cannot be properly blamed for its leaps in events or jumps between settings. We must remember that a third of the tale is not in our possession, so neither Mitchell or the anonymous tellers can bear fault for the ravages of time and our own lack of understanding of the nuances of Sumerian!
George observes that this epic is still, amazingly and poignantly, one in progress as we await trained Assyriologists able to decipher not only the later Akkadian but the considerably more challenging and often cryptic Sumerian sources. Mitchell reminds us in what Rilke called "the epic of the fear of death" how mortality in its cradle, here amidst one of the earliest civilizations in the Middle East, remains open to violence and ravages today. It's humbling and necessary to learn from such a fragile literary moral and a long-attenuated cultural heritage. It's a shame that in a region where so many billions have been spent to destroy the area between the Tigris & Euphrates that a few thousands can not be provided for the study and restoration of the oldest story text we have ever found.
A modern way of telling an ancient tale.......2007-09-14
Having read several versions of this story over the years I think this is the best of the lot. Mitchell does not pretend to be translating this ancient story from ancient civilizations and languages, but he has done a wonderful job of interpreting an interesting fable that has only been recently found and pieced together with various versions from different societies spanning several millennia. He has made this an understandable epic even though taking many liberties with the many literal translations he used to assemble this tale. Not exactly "West Side Story" vs. "Romeo and Juliet" treatment, but readable, enjoyable, and not much of a "violation" of the original, which still has missing fragments, and has been made unnecessarily stuffy by literalists who may have understood ancient languages but didn't really understand that a classic like this should also be as readable and understandable to today's societies as it was to those that existed thousands of years ago when it was originally told.
Ever Ancient, Ever New!.......2007-08-28
Although reputed to be the oldest story extant, "Gilgamesh" shows that human nature remains constant through the ages. The story of King Gilgamesh and his friend, Enkidu, record the age-old tale of rivalry and friendship, death and remorse and, ultimately, the search for immortality. These themes of daily life and parallels to modern statecraft render Gilgamesh as fresh as today's news.
Some features of "Gilgamesh" bear such a resemblance to the Bible as to clearly establish the Bible as a book of its time and culture. Gilgamesh contains a reference to seven years of famine (Joseph in Egypt), a flood story (similar to, but in critical ways different from Noah's) and sections of repeated dialogue, so reminiscent of Biblical sections. The explanatory essay by Stephen Mitchell helps the reader to understand the significance of portions of the tale's subtleties.
As the oldest surviving example of the literature of civilization, "Gilgamesh" should be within the ken of every civilized person. Besides that, it is entertaining reading.
I Hate This Narrator!!!!!!.......2007-08-03
I love the print edition of this book. It is the most accessible version of the story I have ever read.
But the audiobook version, why oh why do publishers continue to use this man to read books?! He is absolutely awful. He must be blackmailing someone with secret photos to keep getting this type of work.
There have been at least four different audiobooks I was very excited to listen too until I found out this man was the narrator. Two others I quit midstream because I couldn't stand listening to him anymore.
Avoid the displeasure of this audiobook version, get a print edition and enjoy this great story.
World Litrature .......2007-07-21
I had to read this book for my world litrature class and it was very easy to understand. The story line was alright, but Stephen Mitchell did a great job re-writing this book.

Customer Reviews:
No Pit So Deep.......2007-08-30
Wrapped in Rain beautifully illustrates the saying, "No pit is so deep that God's love is not deeper still." Wonderful book. I don't have enough adjectives to do it justice. Charles Martin's stories embody all the best in Southern fiction: lyrical prose, quirky characters, a sense of child-like wonder. I pray the Lord allows him to continue writing for years to come.
Amazing author.......2007-08-24
Each of Charles Martin's books have been books that I could not read all at once. Some of his words and sentences would explode the thoughts in my mind so much that I had to put the book down to absorb all the directions that opened up. I don't want to get into describing these stories - each one is such a surprise, I don't want to take anything away from anyone who decides to read one. I celebrate this new author, and I hope he has many more stories waiting to be written. What a pleasure this has been. And like another review said - I wish there were more than 5 stars. The characters, the stories - all amazing.
I need more stars!!!!!.......2007-08-17
I just put the book down and through tears I write this. This book was amazing. I think the people at my gym thought I was crazy b/c I would be laughing one minute and crying the next while reading this on an exercise bike. Truly, truly just a heartwarming book that is full of beauty, Southern charm and love. I have a wonderful mom, but it sure would be nice to have a Momma Ella too. I didn't think he could do better than "When Crickets Cry", but I was wrong. A MUST READ!!
Phenomenal!.......2007-05-25
Wrapped in Rain is proof positive that Charles Martin is much more than a one hit wonder (I LOVED "When Crickets Cry," too!!). His characters are real - deep, flawed, vulnerable, and true - their stories riveting and although some of the subjects are touchy and the situations difficult, Martin has a talent for addressing tough issues with a deep sort of honesty that doesn't sensationalize, preach or judge, but drives home a message that is simply frank and enduring.
Literary critiques being what they are, the truth of the matter is that I love reading Charles Martin's books because they are just really good stories. Not too heavy, but not too light, these are the page turners that you pace out at the end so the book won't end so soon. The ones that make you cry and laugh and get angry and think and that at the end make you feel like you've found a lost little piece of yourself somewhere along the way.
Even better, these are the books that you'll never keep on your own shelf because once you've read them, you pass them on to someone who passes them on again and again and again. So if you think Wrapped in Rain is a keeper (and believe me, it is!), go ahead and order two copies so you'll have one to keep and one to share.
I'm looking forward to more!
Memorable book.......2007-03-18
Tucker Mason lived a miserable childhood because of his cruel, alcoholic father, Rex, who was too busy making money to pay much attention to his sons. The only saving grace for Tucker was Miss Ella, the God-fearing black woman who was charged with taking care of Tucker and his brother Mutt. She taught him what the Bible says, despite Rex's command that she was not to take the boys to church.
A chance meeting with an old friend turns into a reunion for Tucker and the brother he had left in a mental hospital. While Mutt's head is filled with voices which are the residue of Rex's cruelty and Mutt's own feelings of guilt, Tucker's inside voice it that of Miss Ella, urging him to make his peace with his father and be able to clease himself of past hatreds.
Charles Martin has an uncanny ability to take terrible subject matter and turn it into something hopeful and positive. His books are always uplifting and cause the reader to really think about life in a deeper and more positive way.
