Management consultants Robert Graham and Randall Englund believe that the development and launch of successful new products and services hinges on the formation of a thoroughly integrated, "project-based" organization. In Creating an Environment for Successful Projects: The Quest to Manage Project Management, they use the experiences of Hewlett-Packard, AT&T, General Electric, United Airlines, and other notable firms to show what they mean. They also demonstrate how upper managers can cultivate such an atmosphere in their own enterprises and avoid the failures that otherwise threaten their corporate survival.

        Book Description

Since it was first published in 1997, Creating an Environment for Successful Projects has become a landmark work that shows how to develop project management as an organizational practice. This second edition offers solid, results-oriented advice on how upper management can create an environment that supports the success of special projects and the development of new products. The book also includes a wealth of examples from the authors' workshop participants and readers of the first edition who have successfully implemented these concepts within their organizations. New in the second edition:

5 out of 5 stars Too many projects failing?.......2004-03-19

Graham and Englund have achieved something quite remarkable in the second edition of "Creating an Environment for Successful Projects." The original book from 1997 provided a very good road map for organizations looking to improve their project and program management capabilities, and this update significantly improves on it. There are many fresh insights and specifics about what works (and what doesn't work) drawn from an extensive circle of organizations, including many that the authors consulted with personally.

Even more than in the first edition, the message is that excellence in project execution does not just happen - it requires planning, ongoing investment, and the right encouragement. I think the best parts of the book are chapters 3 through 8, because they provide the most concrete and actionable advice for managers of project leaders; they are filled with good practices on what to do and on what to avoid.

5 out of 5 stars How to get the best leverage for your efforts.......2002-04-07

One of the better books on project management, the focus is not so much on specific best practices for project managers to implement on their own within their teams, but how upper management can create an environment that is conducive to project success. This book is exceptionally good at helping to understand how management causes organizational perversity - mucking things up by applying departmental best practices that are totally inappropriate and bad practices for project teams. Great insights into how this happens without upper managers being aware they are doing the opposite of what they intend. Could be used by a Project Office to convince upper management that they might be the main problem that keeps other best practices from being effective. It also highlights those areas where you can get the most leverage, most out of your efforts to get an organization to improve its overall project management effectiveness.

Amazing how a book written in 1997 seems like it was written for current times.

5 out of 5 stars Good info on a sparse topic.......2001-12-23

As a project management consultant, I get asked alot 'how do I implement PM into my company'. There is no one cookie-cutter approach to this since every company is different. There is also no one book out there that adequately covers this subject. This book is the closest thing that there is. If you are looking for a good coverage of the things that you need to be aware of in implementing PM into your company, this book is a good start. It is also well suited for executives looking to implement PM into a company who are curious what PM involves - since a major problem in implementing PM into a company quite often involves executives who are unaware or unconcerned what their responsibilites are for PM. All in all, a useful book that I have used extensively for clients.

        5 out of 5 stars Practical Stuff.......2001-02-10

If you want to understand the underpinnings of what makes projects work or not ... this book is a "must read".

It is full of the kind of plain yet profound logic that my grandmother used to pass on to me when I was child. It just made so much practical sense ... .

5 out of 5 stars Ample support for putting the book's key concepts to good us.......1999-01-13

This book was reviewed in "The Journal of Product Innovation Management" May 1998, an international publication of the Product Development & Management Association (PDMA):

A book which discusses how companies can effectively create a healthier and more nurturing environment for product development, based on companies like Hewlett-Packard, DuPont, Raychem and others.

"As the title implies, this book is about managing project management, not about managing projects - an important concept... Its purpose is to get upper management to understand how and why to develop project management as an organizational competency... Relevant across industries from high tech to low, from product to service, and from consumer to industrial or business-to-business... Its key strengths are: 1) its comprehensive treatment of key issues from the role of strategic direction across the project portfolio to the need for cultivating project management learning; 2) its practical recommendations for change; and 3) its easy-to-read examples... The book is well organized with an overview chapter that includes a call to action and an overview of the remaining chapters. The next seven chapters go on to describe each of the elements of creating an environment for success projects. Laid out as pieces of a complete puzzle to signal their importance as a system" (Mark Deck, Pittiglio Rabin Todd & McGrath, May 1998)

Don't waste your time sitting in class for another month getting ready for Step 1. Get these books, knuckle down and do ALL of them (it will take well disciplined 7-8 hours of study 6 days per week) and you will do great. That's what I did, I'm no genius, and I still scored in the 96th percentile.

This is one of the best series I have ever seen. If you are a foreign grad, you really have to know how to take these exams. This set of 5 books is a great source. I did every question and used the explanations and I did very well on the boards. A definite must have !

          Product Description

This unique work celebrates the 60th birthday of Professor Woodruff Sullivan III (University of Washington, Seattle). The ?Woodfest? conference attracted some of the world?s leading astrobiologists and historians of astronomy, so it is no surprise this book provides a collection of key papers and reviews on the history of astronomy, astrobiology and sundials.

The emphasis on radio astronomy in the historical papers is a fitting reminder that Woody is widely acknowledged as the world?s leading authority in this field. But there are also papers on astrobiology, which reflect his intimate involvement in this exciting multidisciplinary field. The papers on sundials reveal another passion and his quest to make Seattle the sundial capital of North America!

This book will appeal to professional and amateur astronomers, and is a tribute to one of the world?s most remarkable astronomers.

Sometimes an off-key phrase in a soulful song can wrench at the heart, nay, the soul and send one off into that same far-away place that a great book can take you to. Amanda Eyre Ward's second novel, How to Be Lost, provides for the reader with a finely-tuned ear, a nicely wrought, syncopated, octave-changing story. Featuring a hard-living, almost down-on-her-luck narrator, How to Be Lost isn't lost at all when it comes to telling a literary mystery wrapped in the arms of a strong woman's tale. Ward's story bounces between New Orleans and New York, taking her protagonist, Caroline, into steely encounters with her somewhat-estranged family, especially her older sister and mother, as they continue, many years after the fact, to deal with the wrenching effects of the unresolved disappearance of Ellie, the youngest of the Winters family. Readers may find uncanny similarities between the eerie tone and dark nature of Deborah Schupack's The Boy on the Bus but won't be disappointed at all with the story that unfolds and the clever, darkly humorous nature of Ward's pitch-perfect voice. --E. Book Description

Joseph and Isabelle Winters seem to have it all: a grand home in Holt, New York, a trio of radiant daughters, and a sense that they are safe in their affluent corner of America. But when five-year-old Ellie disappears, the fault lines within the family are exposed: Joseph, once a successful businessman, succumbs to his demons; Isabelle retreats into memories of her debutante days in Savannah; and Ellie’s bereft sisters grow apart–Madeline reluctantly stays home, while Caroline runs away.

Fifteen years later, Caroline, now a New Orleans cocktail waitress, sees a photograph of a woman in a magazine. Convinced that it is Ellie all grown up, Caroline embarks on a search for her missing sister. Armed with copies of the photo, an amateur detective guide, and a cooler of Dixie beer, Caroline travels through the New Mexico desert, the mountains of Colorado, and the smoky underworld of Montana, determined to salvage her broken family.

I could not put this book down. Even though the plot is a little predictable, there is something about the book that draws you in and you find yourself rooting for the happiness of the main character, Caroline.

I was a little wary to read Ward's second novel because I loved her first (Sleep Toward Heaven) so much I didn't want to be let down with a one-hit-wonder. Not to worry! The characters in this book are so real and so well defined you'll feel you know them. Ward's writing is so beautiful, sometimes you just have to re-read to look at the words again! If you're reading the reviews here, you already know the basic plot so no need to rehash here. The sisters left behind in this novel each live with their pain in different ways but you can sympathize with both. Some reviewers have complained about the ending. I do not. Not all books are going to wrap up every detail for you and that's OK with me. Your imagination has to take over. Loved the book; loved the ending; ready for Ward's next novel. If you loved Memory Keepers Daughter, or anything by Anita Shreve, chances are good you will love How To Be Lost... or probably anything by Amanda Eyre Ward.

                            3 out of 5 stars A Good 1-Sitting Read.......2007-09-18

It's possible I read "Missing Mom" by Joyce Carol Oates too recently to judge "How to Be Lost" on its own merits. Both involve a family tragedy (and in the book's main timeline) that leaves a mother on her own and leaves her daughters (the good daughter and the daughter who is adrift) trying to define their relationship with her and with each other.

The aspect of "How to be Lost" that was most powerful to me was the description of the three girls in their youth - trying to raise themselves and pretend as if they had parents. (They do - but the dad is an abusive alcoholic and the mom only dresses the part). My parents were divorced at an early age and as the oldest, I felt like I was raising my brother and sister sometimes. That responsibility and forced maturity of a child is powerfully described here and brought back some strong memories. This type of family situation creates a whole new bond with one's siblings - which in my case has been a wonderful one. I'm not sure if I would say the same for Caroline's situation.

Beyond that - I felt like the plot followed pretty standard lines - will the family ever truly start to heal, will Caroline be able to move forward in her life, will Ellie be found... and I wasn't surprised by the ending. Still - I enjoyed Ward's prose a great deal - I am not one for flowery descriptions. Also - I was lucky enough to read the book in one sitting - turning the pages faster as I reached the end.

Though I did like the way Ward uses flashbacks, letters and first person narrative to give more depth to the story - I felt like the book was strongest when the reader was hearing Caroline's voice. The letters from Agnes never really rang true for me - I thought parts of them were cheesy and I just didn't buy into the sexy pictures.

All in all - it was a good read. I enjoyed the book and was I ever going on a trip and wanted a good book to take on the plane - I would pick up one of Ward's.

I adored this book until I was left hanging at the end. I felt so cheated I was angry and tempted to write the author. I never did because she wrote it years ago and figured what did she care about it now. I didn't know how many stars to give it. How about this? Five stars until the last page.

After reading "A Sleep Toward Heaven" I was really looking forward to reading this book. Unfortunately I felt let down during the reading and it seemed that the ending was just too abrubt. It was no where as good as "A Sleep Toward Heaven". Hope her next one is better.

Information manipulation, secrets and lies and cover-ups all in the name of providing a service of keeping the public in the "loop" of day-to-day current events are the backdrops of Heinrich Boll's terse and relevant novel, The Lost Honor of Katharina Blum: Or How Violence Developes and Where It Can Lead. What happens when a person is pushed to the brink of insanity? Do they become a submissive doormat and allow themselves to be completely consumed or do they push back by whatever means necessary in order to obtain the caliber of liberty they once posessed? In this novel-the protagonist-Katharina Blum is placed in just such a scenario where a battle ensues between her and her nemesis, Totges, a hungry reporter who works for a tabloid news outfit appropriately called the "News," an unyielding and unflinching information organization that will stop at nothing-even slander and character assassination-to promote itself as being the ultimate "truth-seeker" despite their limited knowledge and understaning of that which they are seeking. Getting the story and fabricating it in order to remain first is the end-all and be-all, and truth and innocence takes a back seat. In the novel, Katharina is associated with Gotten, a "criminal". And because of that innocent connection, she is placed on par with him as a mastermind of evil, deviancy and debauchery; her life is firmly hybridized with his, and no matter how innocent her actions, she cannot escape the glued-on innuendo solidly attached to her reputation, and as the multi-layered cool and collected Katharina gradually gets stripped away to the bone, she lashes out and evolves into a real criminal, whereby before she was only a fabricated one, fodder for the news media in order to reach to the pinnacles of journalistic success. An example of print media manipulation is best shown on page 105 when Kathharina's mother-Mrs. Blum-is interviewed regarding the goings-on of her daughter: "Why did it have to end like this, why did it have to come to this?" out of which the News made: "It was bound to come to this, it was bound to end like this." Totges accounted for the slight change in Mrs. Blum's statement by saying that as a reporter he was used to "helping simple people to express themselves more clearly." The duality of truth and lies play a game with each other, and in this case, truth finished last. A powerful book that speaks volumes.

3 out of 5 stars Well written, but rather outdated.......2002-02-09

Katharina Blum is a hard working, honest housekeeper with a small car, her own house and, after her divorce from her husband, not much of a social life. One evening during carnaval she decides to go dancing. Here she meets a man who she really likes, but who turns out to have a criminal record. And this is when things start to go wrong... A journalist from the ZEITUNG ("newspaper"), a pulp magazine, claiming to be a respectable newspaper, puts hus teeth into the story and starts damaging Katharina and her family, friends and acquitances. In the end Katharina takes justice into her own hands.

Place and time of this pamphlet (as Böll calls this book in an afterword) are West-Germany, 1974, so a conservative society at the height of the fear for the Red Army Faction, with an unbridled influence of the pulp press, in particular the notorious BILD-Zeitung. Böll has written a convincing accusation against these type of journals and the fact that people actually believe what they say.

The problem with this book is that it is outdated: in the meantime the world has moved on, readers (even those of newspapers like the ZEITUNG) have become more aware of the fact that these type of newspapers tend to lie and the accusations made in those types of newspapers are nowadays even more outrageous than in 1974. I also had some problems with the style of writing: even though the book is well written (what one may expect from a Nobel laureate), the narrator actively comments on what is going on, which is sometimes irritating and does not add anything to the story.

3 out of 5 stars An early attack on the power of tabloid journalism........2000-09-09

Katharina Blum's murder of a newspaper reporter, to which she has confessed on the opening page, is not the point of attack for a mystery story, despite that implication on the book jacket. There is too little suspense and character development to make you care much about her. Instead, Boll uses the murder and its aftermath to offer a cautionary tale about overzealous police investigators and the unfettered tabloid press--showing how the press descends on Katharina and everyone who has ever come into contact with her, twisting words, creating false impressions based upon police department leaks, casting aspersions, ruining lives, and inciting Katharina to eventual murder.

Sound familiar? The novel may have been startling, and even controversial, when it was published in 1974, but no contemporary reader familiar with the tabloids at the supermarket checkout or with sensational talk shows conducting outrageously one-sided investigations will find this depiction of the press even slightly shocking. In fact, the methods of the press in this novel seem unrealistic, not because they are so extreme, but because they are so obvious, crude, and lacking in subtlety. Boll may have been prophetic with this novel in 1974, but it is a product of its own time. While it may confirm that the conflict between responsible journalism and irresponsible sensationalism has a long history, it offers few useful insights for the present day.

                            5 out of 5 stars Mandatory reading!.......1999-10-03

I have to admit, I saw the film before reading the book, and I recommend them both. In today's climate in America, - when the police profession is considered one of the noblest by liberals and conservatives alike, and the so-called "liberal" press, which crossed the line into tabloid journalism awhile ago, and which still hides behind the myth/lie of "objectivity," - this book is as timely and relevant today as it ever was, and should be mandatory viewing/reading.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic novel that suggests Germany is like Orwell's 1984.......1999-07-16

Böll has several enemies he seeks to attack: the press, the police, and the German government's secret service. He describes the mud which the tabloid "News" throws at people, mud which sticks. He shows the incompetence and unruthfulness of senior police officers. He also shows how tax payer's money is squandered on tapping people's 'phones for very little useful information. In all Böll shows that Big Brother was really watching West Germans and that the state could make things really nasty. He also showed how all this was supposedly done in the name of anti-communism (a noble cause of course!)
