3 out of 5 stars Good despite some typos.......2007-07-23

Very quick and easy to use. Good format. However there are a few errors. If you are already good at Spanish you can fix them yourself. Page 26 has multiple errors regarding words for positioning. Page 75 spelling error "pnerle" should be ponerle. If you are in need of a quick medical translation, this is still worth it despite the errors.

5 out of 5 stars Fast, easy reference in hand........2007-06-28

As a nurse I've found this pocket reference to be a speedy way to find common phrases in a hurry... faster than using the Eng-Spa dictionary in my PDA. I would also recommend it for use if you travel to Spanish speaking countries. It is very useful when you are the patient and there is a language deficit.

    Book Description

In this provocative new book, radio astronomer and author Gerrit L. Verschuur describes the phenomena of scientific curiosity and discovery by following the exciting story of interstellar matter. The discovery of "stuff between the stars" was the result of decades of work by hundreds of astronomers, and the evolving recognition of its existence has profoundly changed the way we view the Universe. Verschuur begins with E.E. Barnard, who puzzled for a quarter century over the interpretation of photographs of dark patches between the stars. Verschuur then traces the tortuous path to acceptance of the existence of interstellar matter. He shares with us the thrill of discovery that motivates astronomers, the use of metaphors and modeling by scientist, and other tricks of the astronomical trade. Finally, we learn about the modern study of interstellar matter: the discovery of complex organic molecules between the stars and how they may have seeded the early earth with the precursors for life, new insights into star formation, the structure of the Milky Way and the elusive interstellar magnetic field. More than a history, Interstellar Matters is a detective story that evokes the excitement and serendipity of science against the background of a century of shared effort by the world community of astronomers. From the reviews: "I can't imagine anyone interested in astronomy who won't enjoy this book - it's chocked full of science, personalities and insights. We are products of the stuff between the stars - Verschuur tells the fascinating story of how its existence was discovered. Interstellar Matters is his best book, I think. It's certainly one of the best astronomy popularizations I've read." Leif J. Robinson, Sky and Teleskope#1

    4 out of 5 stars difficult observations.......2005-01-29

The subject is a very difficult one to get direct data on. By not being a star, it does not usually radiate. So evidence of it tended to be indirect. The book shows how it took decades for the idea to be accepted, in no small part because of the observational difficulties.

You can also get from the book a feeling of how progress is made in modern astronomy. A combination of inspiration and pushing the instruments to their limit.

          Book Description

You are not a Monkey's Uncle enters the Machiavellian world of the evolutionists, and attempts to separate fact from fiction. From an article in The Cambridge Encyclopedia of Human Evolution, evolutionist Steve Smith writes, "There is kind of an invincible ignorance among anti-evolutionists that bores when it does not exasperate those seriously interested in the subject." Tim Berm, in his book Evolution and the Myth of Creation, says it can be statistically proven that non-evolutionists receive lower marks in school and believe in ghosts, spirits, and UFOs. Mr. Carlton S. Cook, author of The Origin of Races, Racial Adaptation, and several others believes; the Australian aborigine's brow ridge is comparable to that of prehistoric man and the entire African race lags behind in evolution.. These offensive statements and outrageous opinions typify evolutionary thinking - pompous unsubstantiated conclusions stated as fact. And their record on fossilized bones, skulls, and teeth is not one to be envied. Fossils from Galley Man, Nebraska Man, Piltdown Man, Piltdown Man ll, Java Man and a host of others were once said to be proofs of man's evolution by the Darwinians, but were later exposed as frauds and hoaxes.

5 out of 5 stars Not an easy but a worthwhile read.......2007-09-25

I don't think Camus could have written a bad book if he had tried. In this case, I think it's accurate to say that this is the sort of book that makes you think and enjoy thinking.

          5 out of 5 stars amazing.......2007-08-10

i have read this book in hebrew
          it is absolutely great
i recommend it to everyone who wants to "think outside of the box" and had wondered about the meaning of life...

          4 out of 5 stars Life's the thing.......2006-10-21

The myth of Sisyphus is a model essay to comfort people in those moods of bleak, existential despair that assail us all from time to time. The moral to emerge from this fable is a simple one - life in the post Nietzsche age, with no god, is absurd, there is no overarching meaning outside life itself, but there is still great nobility in fighting the good fight right to the death.

The best part comes for those readers who stick it out through the final appendix: Camus offers a stunning commentary of Kafka's work - the fate of his tragic protagonists in 'The Trial' and 'The Castle', viewed in light of the universal plight of mankind. Very telling is his addendum which acknowledges that he is not precluding aesthetic critiques of Kafka's work. Great art offers so much, yet resolves nothing. Like life.

          3 out of 5 stars A treatise on absurdism........2006-07-22

The Myth of Sisyphus is a treatise on absurdism, and while absurdism is an admittedly interesting topic in its own right, Camus never convincingly demonstrates a connection between the absurd and the impulse to suicide.

The average man could care less about the limits of knowledge, the evasions of nature, and all of the other epistemological concerns that Camus manages to exalt to godlike stature in the concept of the absurd. He posits a sort of ethic in which we are expected to ignore the pointless nature of life, and continue to "play the game", because somehow this is in accordance with his absurd valuations:

"It is essential to die unreconciled and not of one's own free will. Suicide is a repudiation. The absurd man can only drain everything to the bitter end, and deplete himself. The absurd is his extreme tension, which he maintains constantly by solitary effort, for he knows that in that consciousness and in that day-to-day revolt he gives proof of his only truth, which is defiance."

As such, his conclusions are not conclusions as much as an attempt by Camus to impose his values on the reader -- I asked for enlightenment and instead Camus does the intellectual equivalent of taking me to the Church of the Absurd (TM).

5 out of 5 stars The question of suicide and its ethics.......2005-07-07

In his many theoretical books, Albert Camus tries to answer a question that has bothered him: Whether a human life is worth taking?

In this particular book, he tries to answer the question for a special case - that of suicide.

'The Absrud dictates suicide' is one sentence that echoes throughout the book in various forms. Camus believes that it is the absurdity and meaninglessness of our lives that drives us to suicide.

He compares the absurdity to the myth of the greek hero Sisyphus who was condemned to roll a huge rock uphill for eternity. Camus proceeds to uncover the entire existential psychology of The Absurd, but concludes that one's own life is not worth taking.

He then proceed to demonstrate through a collection of anecdotal essays, how human beings can construct meaning from life. His other essays in the book do give a hint about how to find meaning in life, but may not be persuasive enough for someone too much in the dumps.

The logical connection between his analysis and conclusion is weak, but the analysis is brilliant. And for that reason alone, it is really worth reading.

Immediately forget any preconceptions you may have about Salman Rushdie and the controversy that has swirled around his million-dollar head. You should instead know that he is one of the best contemporary writers of fables and parables, from any culture. Haroun and the Sea of Stories is a delightful tale about a storyteller who loses his skill and a struggle against mysterious forces attempting to block the seas of inspiration from which all stories are derived. Here's a representative passage about the sources and power of inspiration:
So Iff the water genie told Haroun about the Ocean of the Stream of Stories, and even though he was full of a sense of hopelessness and failure the magic of the Ocean began to have an effect on Haroun. He looked into the water and saw that it was made up of a thousand thousand thousand and one different currents, each one a different colour, weaving in and out of one another like a liquid tapestry of breathtaking complexity; and Iff explained that these were the Streams of Story, that each coloured strand represented and contained a single tale. Different parts of the Ocean contained different sorts of stories, and as all the stories that had ever been told and many that were still in the process of being invented could be found here, the Ocean of the Streams of Story was in fact the biggest library in the universe. And because the stories were held here in fluid form, they retained the ability to change, to become new versions of themselves, to join up with other stories and so become yet other stories; so that unlike a library of books, the Ocean of the Streams of Story was much more than a storeroom of yarns. It was not dead, but alive.

"And if you are very, very careful, or very, very highly skilled, you can dip a cup into the Ocean," Iff told Haroun, "like so," and here he produced a little golden cup from another of his waistcoat pockets, "and you can fill it with water from a single, pure Stream of Story, like so," as he did precisely that.

5 out of 5 stars Nice Story, Well written.......2007-09-24

I have been reading Sulman Rushdie for a while and I can see what makes him so great.

His interest in giving out details makes this book and any of his other book an interesting reading.

5 out of 5 stars Haroun is Better than Harry.......2007-08-24

Don't let the author's name scare you away from this fantastic book. Rushdie brings this fantasy world alive with wonderful description and his artistic use of vocabulary. Full of wonder, suspense and fun! Great book for middle-schoolers (and up) or as a read-aloud to younger children. There are subtle political points addressed in the novel, but children will not notice.

                            2 out of 5 stars Just a cute story........2007-08-23

This is a kids book that really is just for kids. I know the editors' reviews tell you that it will change your life, change the world, or something else great. But, trust me, it's just a cute story.

Haroun's dad is a story teller. His life is happy until one day his mom leaves him and his dad and his dad can no longer tell stories. This puts the mat risk of losing everything because that's how they maek their money. They are invited to tell stories on behalf of politicians, and the night before Haroun's dad must tell the gretest story ever Haroun and his dad go on a magical journey (is it a dream?) to a magical land, where they save the sea of stories, the source of all the stories of the universe.

It's not bad. It's just that it lacks some level of subtely and cohesiveness that good books have. Even good kids' books. And it also lacks that "page turner" element that makes up for a book not being that great, becuase it somehow grabs you.

This book is easy, and it's very cute. It reminds me a great deal of The Phantom Tollbooth. THey both use puns and play on words, they both tell of magical journeys that change a young boy's life. But the jokes and play on words aren't all that funny (you have to know Hindi to get most of them), and get kind of old. You can finish it quickly, and you won't regret reading it. Still, you can probably find a book that you enjoy much more.

                            2 out of 5 stars good children's book, dumb grown-up book.......2007-07-18

No where on my copy of this book was it identified as a children's book. (I give Amazon more credit --- there were clues on their web site.) So after Satanic Verses, it was a real let-down.

                            4 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Novel.......2007-06-01

This novel is Salman Rushdie's funniest, yet it also talks about the importance of freedom of speech and of storytelling. I was immediately drawn into the book from the beginning, which is written like a modern-day fairy tale. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone looking for an enjoyable, yet thought-provoking read.

5 out of 5 stars The Sweet Simplicity of Salman Rushdie.......2007-05-21

Billy Collins comprised Poetry 180 after a high school student told him that reading poetry is "like my brother has his foot on the back of my beck in the swimming pool." The 2001 Poet Laureate created the collection of works by modern poets in an effort to provide students with "poems whose injection of pleasure is immediate" and not obscured by literary features. Salman Rushdie appears to have had a similar goal in Haroun and the Sea of Stories. Rushdie's story of a boy who ventures into Gup City, Kahani, which is located on the shores of the Great Story Seas to save his father's renowned story telling abilities, and ends up saving the entire story-telling world from the evil Khattam-Shud, the Prince of Silence, who is intoxicating the Sea of Stories with poison. Rushdie employs the simple tactics of a legendary plot and imaginative characters to make his novel as great as any child's fairy tale.

Haroun's trip to and battle in the world of Stories and Silence is an epic story of the fight between good and evil. Surprise prompts the story on initially, like many good stories, as Haroun is forced to determine the true source of his father's stories. After years of never believing that the legendary stories came from drinking from a Story Tap fed by the Great Story Sea, Haroun finds himself face-to-face with Iff, the Water Genie, who is on a mission to discontinue Haroun's father's story-telling subscription. The story then continues with no events foreseen. And the plot is not only surprising, but also ageless.
After Haroun is prompted by Iff to select any flying bird, real or otherwise, to transport the two of them back to Gup City, which is located in an alternate universe, it would seem, the good-versus-evil battle takes place. Haroun and three recently acquired imaginary creature friends fight the Prince of Silence, Khattam-Shud, and an army of close-mouthed Shadows. The fight ends with Haroun and company victorious as they prevented the Plugging of the Great Story Sea's Wellspring by Khattam-Shud. The classic triumph of good over evil easily endears the reader to the story, for the hope that it provides to its adult readers, so often plagued by the boredom of nonfiction and the technicalities followed by most novelists.

Rushdie creates imaginative character's that possess impossible traits, still often incomprehensible to the reader, which keeps alive the wonder and possibility generally associated with fairytales read as a child. The Shadow Warriors fighting for the Son of Darkness, Khattam-Shud, are actual Shadows of those unsatisfied with the rule of Khattam-Shud, who have, with his strong magical help, detached themselves from their Warrior. Khattam-Shud himself has detached his Shadow, allowing him to be in two places at once. Only light can destroy Shadow Warriors, an enormous task as the battle takes place in the Land of Darkness in the Land of Chup. Rushdie also uses some character combinations twice in the book; both the evil Khattam-Shud and Mr. Sengupta, who stole Haroun's mother from his father, are described to have hypocritical, weasely men, with boring clerk voices. Rushdie uses such a character twice to communicate the personal level of hatred that should be applied to Khattam-Shud.

Salman Rushdie's simple combination of great plot and character development creates a loveable fairytale book, thick enough for any adult to read. No move within his plot is ever expected, and no character is fully conceivable in Rushdie's novel. The imagination involved in writing the novel as well as the imagination necessary to enjoy the novel marks Haroun and the Sea of Stories as a clear and simple book to use to reconnect with the stories of one's childhood. Like Billy Collin's collection of poems, Haroun can be enjoyed at face value, without digging for a "true meaning," just a simple kick of enjoyment.

Three Libretti-Ranging In Setting From Ancient Jerusalem To Pre-Apocalyptic London-From An Acclaimed Poet

This volume of libretti marks new work-and new terrain-for James Fenton. Commissioned by companies in New York and England, these musical pieces make the most of the poet's poignant, witty, and characteristically lyrical verse. Whether evoking modern-day London on the edge of apocalypse in The Love Bomb, a timeless land beyond the moon in this version of Salman Rushdie's children's novel Haroun and the Sea of Stories, or ancient Jerusalem in his stirring oratorio The Fall of Jerusalem, which was composed to mark the millennium, Fenton's lucid storytelling and stylish wordplay bring these pieces vividly to life-with equal power in performance or on the page.
