Over the last decade, statisticians have developed new statistical tools in the field of spatial point processes. At the same time, observational efforts have yielded a huge amount of new cosmological data to analyze. Although the main tools in astronomy for comparing theoretical results with observation are statistical, in recent years, cosmologists have not been generally aware of the developments in statistics and vice versa. Statistics of the Galaxy Distribution describes both the available observational data on the distribution of galaxies and the applications of spatial statistics in cosmology. It gives a detailed derivation of the statistical methods used to study the galaxy distribution and the cosmological physics needed to formulate the statistical models. Because the prevalent approach in cosmological statistics has been frequentist, the authors focus on the most widely used of these methods, but they also explore Bayesian techniques that have become popular in large-scale structure studies. Describing the most popular methods, their latest applications, and the necessary mathematical and astrophysical background, this groundbreaking book presents the state of the art in the statistical description of the large-scale structure of the Universe. This cutting-edge textbook on the Statistics of the Galaxy Distribution describes and predicts the pattern forming habits, distribution laws, and spatial resolutions of the large-scale cosmological structures in the universe. Galaxies, clusters, superclusters, walls of galaxies, filamentary regions, voids, and dark matter areas are discussed. Not only does the book detail the astrophysical natures of these physical structures but it also uses recent developments in statistics in order to predict that which cannot be known absolutely from mere astronomical observation. Cosmological point processes and continuous random fields are stochastic (random) processes outlined in the book. They describe the frequency of the originating matter in the universe that distributes itself in a mode that represents the harmonics of space. Some of the geometry used in the book is non-Euclidean because the large regions of space that are being assesed reside where space-time curvature is accounted for.

Periodic sollutions for cosmological fields, such as spectras for Gaussian random fields, are modelled with "gradient topographies", as waveforms, using Fourier transforms. The digital imaging of reallized spectra, the Boolean grain model for Poisson distribution, cosmological simulation for a percolating cluster, and the redshift survey for voids are pretty cool.

This book tackles a wide range of mathematical topics and applies areas of very pertinent, recent fields of scientific inquiry. The void probability function, fractal properties of the galaxy distribution, fractal models for the univesre, Hausdorff dimension (in relation to sets of fractioned dimension), correlation lenghth and fractal behaviour, multifractal measures (very interesting), the Voronoi model of tesselations (a crystalline structure of galaxy distribution composed of cellular geometry), Fourier analysis of clustering, random fields and point processes, redshift distortions, pencil-beams and slices, and an awesome section devoted to cosmography includes areas on time machines, gravitational lensing, cosmic shear etc. also topological measurements, Minkowski functionals, cluster and percolation analysis, spaning trees, wavelets, void statistics, supergalactic coordinate systems, it's a very versatile cosmology text.

The specificity of subject this book examines is a very fascinating and important one. The way the universe disperses matter and organizes itself spatially, on a large-scale, may soon give clues to the general unified theory of physical fields, as information correlations for small-scale distributions. Observing the surveys of the largest fields reveal that the patterns for galaxy distribution form a network resembling nothing else but the axonal webbing of the brain.

For any fascinated students, scientists or mathematicians, this book provides valuable knowledge about the universe. If this was all you understood about cosmology you would be closer to absolute cosmological knowledge than a cosmologist who knew nothing but general theory.

I didn't like this book as much as some of the previous ones in this series. But overall it was a good book and definitely worth reading. My two favorite stories in this series were Janna's and Terry's. You don't need to read all of the books but it does help explain who some of the other characters are.

total rush, total fun.......2007-04-24

Gemma Dante is a witch, a fact that causes much of her family to treat her with disgust and anger--not that it keeps them from imposing on her time and good will, however.

She meets Sean Kennealy when a group of firefighters comes knocking on her door responding to complaints of smoke from a neighbor. Turns out the neighbor was Sean himself, and the smoke was a particularly pungent kind of incense she was partial to.

Not exactly a promising beginning.

But Gemma and Sean are attracted, and in a spirit of nothing-ventured-nothing-gained, they end up in bed and embark on a relationship.

In the hands of another author, that might have been the end of the story, but not here. Sex isn't the answer to Gemma and Sean's relationship success. Neither is comfortable with the other's friends, and Sean is leery about what his family will think of Gemma's religion.

The Good:
The expansion of the series. Unlike the previous two books, Total Rush doesn't feature a hockey player as a hero. It does, however, continue to follow the group of family and friends we met in Body Check and Foul Play. The heroine is Gemma Dante, the rather wacky cousin of Michael Dante that we met in Foul Play.
The conflicts. Along with sorting out the problems of their relationship, Sean and Gemma have to deal with the traumas Sean faces as a firefighter, Gemma's family problems, and a stalker. It's messy, like real life, and thus believable.

The Bad:
Unlike the previous two books, Total Rush doesn't feature a hockey player as a hero. If you're expecting one, you'll be disappointed.
The "witch" heroine isn't like the witches in the current crop of paranormal romances. If you're expecting one, you'll be disappointed.

The Dose of Reality:
Contrary to the message we get in a lot of books, great sex doesn't necessarily equal happy ever after. In fact, it ends up complicating the issue for Sean and Gemma and they question whether it's love or just lust (a question I often have at the ends of other books).

The Verdict:
Total Rush is about two people finding each other and falling in love. It's also about family and acceptance and trust. It's a book that is fun on the surface, but that I'll reread and find something new each time I do.

Not a Page Turner!.......2007-04-06

This is the fourth Diedre Martin romance I've read, and I have to say the worst. The chemistry between the two main characters, Sean and Gemma, is barely believable. I've read authors that can take a man and a woman at opposite ends of the spectrum and, with really great characterization, circle them around to one another until they -quite believably- fall in love and head toward a long life together. Susan Elizabeth Phillips is a master at this. Dierdre Martin is not. Beyond that, be prepared for scene after scene where the two main characters don't interact. The subplots are too thick and too boring. I agree, if this is your first Dierdre Martin novel, don't give up hope. The others aren't this bad. I did end up finishing this, but only because I'm obsessive compulsive about finishing what I start, not because the book is a page turner!

No Chemistry.......2006-12-29

While I generally like Martin's stuff, this one was hard for me to finish. I agree with a previous reviewer that these two were too much of a mismatched pair. I couldn't figure out why they were together except the sex was good for them. There was no chemistry. Sad that this will be someone's first and last Martin novel, because there are so many others of hers out there that are so good. I would urge anyone reading this as their first Martin story to at least try one more before making any decisions about not reading her ever again.

AWESOME STORY.......2006-12-17

I loved this book.. I thought the book was interesting with just enough spice. I thought some parts about the Grandmother were a little long but otherwise the book was great and a fun read.

This is a gorgeous book visually and a beautiful book in it's welcoming attitude and clear approach. Anne Kent Rush is a classic authority in both massage and yoga. Her long experience and creativity allow her to bring the two disciplines together in Massage for Total Well-Being. The book shows, chapter by chapter, how to combing massage with yoga's seven centers of health. It's a book you can read in it's entirety or pick up at any place and learn new ways to enhance your well-being. I found comfort in simply reading it. This would be a great gift for those too-busy people on your list.
