Book Description
The comprehensive guide to 360-degree feedback from the Center for Creative Leadership
In the network economy, growing intellectual capital is the key to increasing market value. In Maximizing, Tornow, London, and their associates demonstrate the power of 360-degree feedback for developing managers, renewing organizations, and building learning cultures. Drawing on years of experience and state-of-the-art research, the authors have crafted a highly useful and practical book which provides us with a thorough understanding of this invaluable organizational tool.
--Leo Burke, director, College of Leadership and Transcultural Studies, Motorola University
Despite the burgeoning popularity of 360-degree feedback for rating work performance, few people have a detailed understanding of how it can be used to enhance, even maximize, individual and organizational development. This standard-setting manual draws on the twenty-eight-year expertise the Center for Creative Leadership brings to the subject to give HR managers, consultants, and systems designers the big-picture guidance they need to determine if 360-degree feedback is right for their organization and, if so, to implement it.
Readers will discover how they can use 360-degree feedback as a tool for achieving a variety of objectives such as communicating performance expectations, setting developmental goals, establishing a learning culture, and tracking the effects of organizational change. Comprehensive guidelines show how 360-degree feedback can be designed to maximize employee involvement, self-determination, and commitment. Includes case examples and a bevy of instructive instruments.
Customer Reviews:
A good practical overview of a performace management best practice.......2006-03-04
A 360-degree feedback survey collects inputs from bosses, subordinates, peers, clients and customers and even self-evaluations to create a complete picture of performance, pinpointing areas for improvement. This is a more reliable indicator of performance because no one person is able to see all aspects of an employee's performance, or to report on all of the many roles that an employee may fill. The authors believe that you should use the information from 360-degree performance evaluation not just on an individual basis, but as a foundation for an organization-wide performance management system that applies to every individual and group in the company. A performance management system can help your organization in many ways:
1. By creating a focus for employees on the skills and competencies that are crucial to the organization, aligning individual goals with company goals.
2. By reinforcing the working relationships throughout your company that contribute to performance and success.
3. By creating a corporate learning culture.
There's a lot out there now on 360 Degree Feedback. This book is concise and practical. A good resource.
Why Do We Measure?.......2000-05-01
"For several reasons", M.London and W.Tornow write, "360-degree feedback has become a popular technique in organizations today. The complexity of jobs requires that employees have feedback from a variety of constituencies, not just their supervisor, who has traditionally been the source of feedback and performance review. Also, organizational restructuring and downsizing place the burden of development on the employee. Today's organizations generally do not provide structured career paths with promises of job security and advancement. Rather, individuals need to be responsible for their continued ability to add value to the organization. The organization enables this by providing a variety of resources, which often include access to training to improve current job performance and prepare for tomorrow; 360-degree feedback may be part of this development process (from the Introduction pp. 2-3)."
In this context, as a collection of chapters addressing the broad issue of using 360-degree feedback for individual and organizational development, authors from Center for Creative Leadership (CCL) :
* review origins of 360-degree feedback in organizations.
* discuss the standards and dimensions of performance that are rated in a 360-degree survey.
* focus on the quality of the ratings and the information they convey to the feedback recipients.
* examine the outcomes of the 360-degree feedback for performance improvement and development.
* describe the kind of program (Leadership Development Program) that can enhance the 360-degree feedback process by presenting a case study.
* consider the benefits of the 360-degree feedback process for organizations and how current practices affect these benefits.
* describe the internal and external forces affect the process of 360-degree feedback.
* examine the advantage of involving customers in the 360-degree feedback process and in the development of organizational strategy.
* show how 360-degree feedback can be an integral part of establishing a learning culture.
* focus on standard 360-degree feedback instruments such as : (1) the questionnaire, (2) the scored feedback (or results), and (3) the administrative process.
* discuss what is involved in applying the 360-degree feedback process in different countries in a multinational organization.
* focus on using 360-degree feedback surveys to measure what happens as a result of an intervention rather than using the data from 360-degree feedback to identify a needed development intervention.
"In conclusion", W.Tornow and M.London write, "organizations can maximize the value of 360-degree feedback as a process that will create successful individual and organizational development. This can be done by being intentional and systemic when designing and implementing a 360-degree feedback program such that it fits with the intended purpose, is aligned with the business goals and strategies, and is integrated with other HR systems (from the Conclusion p.258)."
I highly recommend.

Book Description
Mama Might Be Better Off Dead is an unsettling, profound look at the human face of health care. Both disturbing and illuminating, it immerses readers in the lives of four generations of a poor, African-American family beset with the devastating illnesses that are all too common in America's inner-cities.
The story takes place in North Lawndale, a neighborhood that lies in the shadows of Chicago's Loop. Although surrounded by some of the city's finest medical facilities, North Lawndale is one of the sickest, most medically underserved communities in the country. Headed by Jackie Banes, who oversees the care of a diabetic grandmother, a husband on kidney dialysis, an ailing father, and three children, the Banes family contends with countless medical crises. From visits to emergency rooms and dialysis units, to trials with home care, to struggles for Medicaid eligibility, Abraham chronicles their access (or lack of access) to medical care.
Told sympathetically but without sentimentality, their story reveals an inadequate health care system that is further undermined by the direct and indirect effects of poverty. When people are poor, they become sick easily. When people are sick, their families quickly become poorer.
Embedded in the family narrative is a lucid analysis of the gaps, inconsistencies, and inequalities the poor face when they seek health care. This book reveals what health care policies crafted in Washington, D. C. or state capitals look like when they hit the street. It shows how Medicaid and Medicare work and don't work, the Catch-22s of hospital financing in the inner city, the racial politics of organ transplants, the failure of childhood immunization programs, the vexed issues of individual responsibility and institutional paternalism. One observer puts it this way: "Show me the poor woman who finds a way to get everything she's entitled to in the system, and I'll show you a woman who could run General Motors."
Abraham deftly weaves these themes together to make a persuasive case for health care reform while unflinchingly presenting the complexities that will make true reform as difficult as it is necessary. Mama Might Be Better Off Dead is a book with the power to change the way health care is understood in America. For those seeking to learn what our current system of health care promises and what it delivers, it offers a place for the debate to begin.

Puleese!!!!!!.......2007-09-04
This left wing, socalist bent author wants to shame the government for not providing cradle to grave management of people's lives; maybe if the author focused on this nation's irresponsible people, who go through life thinking you can abuse your body then get Washington to pay your medical and nursing home bills..... sick book, sick thinking,
If your poor and sick, you may as weel be deead.......2007-09-04
I was required to read this book for a Social Problems Analysis class. Before, I had never thought about the major problems with our health system. Unlike a reviwer before me, I don't see her as being biased. If you have ever lived in a poor urban neighborhood, then you would know, Abraham is correct. People who live in poverty, often have no access to better health care, so they take what they can get. It is easy to say these people should take responsible for their health care if you have never been in this situation. Abraham did a wonderful job staying objective, even at times, when I don't know if I could have. I would reccomend this book to anyone who has questions about how the medical system works in poor areas.
Great book.......2006-11-06
If you're interested in health care in America, Medicare, Medicaid, Chicago, poverty, and health care disparities read this book. Great investigative journalism style.
Great read for a future doc.......2006-02-09
I was required to read this in medical school. This is a great book. It is leaning to the side of socialism, but it is certainly addressing a real problem in America. This book has been out for a while. I am wondering why in the world politicians and businessmen invovled in healthcare are not required to read this book. They should. I think it's good enough to qualify for 12th grade mandatory reading.
Eye-opening read, but very left-wing.......2002-12-17
Mama was required reading for a graduate-level nursing course. It was very enlightening -- a poignant and heartbreaking look at a poor African-American family living in one of Chicago's worst neighborhoods. However, I found the author's style and choice of words biased towards the subjects and exceptionally left-wing. Not that these things really don't happen, but the author's descriptive language is heavily biased against the "system" while downplaying the flip side of the coin, that people need to take some individual responsibility for their actions. Abraham does her best (one would hope) to remain objective, but it is most definitely a narrative and should be treated as such. Still, definitely worth the read.

Book Description
Lost Causes in and Beyond Physics deals with a selection of research topics mostly from theoretical physics that have been shown to be a dead-end or continue at least to be highly controversial. Nevertheless, whether it is about Bohmian mechanics, physics from Fisher information or the quantum theory of the brain, small but dedicated research communities continue to work on these issues. R.F. Streater, renowned mathematical physicist and co-author of the famous book "PCT, Spin and Statistics, and all that", in a series of essays describes the work and struggle of these research commnities, as well as the chances of any breakthrough in these areas. This book is written as both an entertainment and serious study and should be accessible to anyone with a background in theoretical physics and mathematics.

Book Description
The book begins with a review of the physical and mathematical motivations for studying physical theories in the presence of boundaries, with emphasis on electrostatics, vacuum Maxwell theory and quantum cosmology. The Feynman propagator is then studied in Minkowski space- time and in curved space-time. In the latter case, the corresponding Schwinger-DeWitt asymptotic expansion is given. The following chapters introduce the theory of the effective action and the geometric improvement due to Vilkovisky, the manifestly covariant quantization of gauge fields, zeta-function regularization in mathematics and in quantum field theory, and the choice of local or non-local boundary conditions in one-loop quantum theory. In the second part, the authors present their investigations of Euclidean Maxwell theory, simple supergravity and Euclidean quantum gravity. The recurring themes are the evaluation of conformal anomalies and one-loop divergences on manifolds with boundary, the relation between covariant and non-covariant formalisms for the quantization of gauge fields and the choice of boundary condition in the one-loop semiclassical analysis of Euclidean quantum gravity and simple supergravity.
Audience: This work will appeal to research workers involved in quantum field theory, relativity and gravitation, electromagnetic theory, cosmology and quantum mechanics.

Book Description
An epidemic of apocalyptic proportions has swept the globe, causing the dead to rise and feed on the living. In a matter of months, society has crumbled: There is no government, no grocery stores, no mail delivery, no cable TV. Rick Grimes finds himself one of the few survivors in this terrifying future. A couple months ago he was a small town cop who had never fired a shot and only ever saw one dead body. Separated from his family, he must now sort through all the death and confusion to try and find his wife and son. In a world ruled by the dead, we are forced to finally begin living.
Customer Reviews:
Amazing zombie comic!.......2007-09-05
This is the first volume in the Walking Dead series. Its centers around Rick Grimes, a former officer of the law, who wakes from a coma to see the world flooded with zombies. This first volume chronicles his journey to find his wife and kid and his getting to know fellow survivors.
The book seems familiar but manages to keep from clises and stay fresh. Every character is deep and multi demensional and there is no one you can just flat out hate.
If you are a fan of sophisticated horror comics then this is the best there is. Excellent story with absolutely beautiful black and white art (which I think works even better than if it was in color).
Just buy it and you will not be dissapointed.
*****
Graphic SF Reader.......2007-09-03
Kirkman has come up with a winner here. A thoughtful zombie story that isn't so much about massacring zombies. Much the same as in the movie 28 days later, a man wakes up and finds the place deserted and has no idea what the hell is going on. In this case, however, the wakee is a cop, so is a little better prepared psychologically to deal with some serious problems, so he sets out to find his family.
ready for more.......2007-07-26
This is a very good horror comic series. It's not going to change your life or anything. Both the story and artistry are good, not outstanding. If you like zombie stuff, you should get this. You'd like it a lot.
I titled my review ready for more because while I'm not blown away, I certainly would like to keep reading this series. Fortunately, I've got a brother in a comic shop, so I don't have to pay retail!!
Nice!.......2007-07-21
Not having much exposure to graphic novels or comics, I was impressed at how enjoyable this story was to read. A good zombie fix that's blessedly free of plot holes and other flaws that tend to trouble this genre.
It's over way to fast, but it's good.
Let your imagination take over and be horrified for days after........2007-07-17
First off, let me say I'm not a fan of horror movies and books, which is why I only rate it at 4 stars, But it's because of movies and books like this that I'm not a fan. They are just so well written in the sense of what really happens to us when the very world and society we've grown up in is completely taken from us. Second, the graphics are amazingly realistic. I've seen some "Horror" comics but they didn't insight any type of visual fear because there was no real detail in the graphics. Now, I'm not an expert of horror books and movies but I can say that this scared me stiff, pun...kind of intended. To be fair Zombies are something I've always had a childish fear of and I"m very frightened of especially since the recent zombie boom in the media so for them to be the topic was off the bat a scary topic for me. I've got a huge imagination that brings these types of comics, Zombies/Vampires/aliens, alive in the sense, I'll want to look around me while reading or days after I've read them to feel safe, since it sticks with me. So, if your an avid reader and viewer of horror then my review isn't really for you, but if your someone who is interested by horror but don't like being absolutely horrified. Then this will surly do it's job to scary you out of your wits but give you the chance to just stop and close the book if it's too much.
