If "networking" was the battle cry of the business world at the tail end of the 20th century, Melissa Giovagnoli and Jocelyn Carter-Miller hope to make "networlding" its call to arms in the new millennium. Giovagnoli, a consultant and speaker, and Carter-Miller, a Motorola executive, agree that one-to-one connectivity is still the key to professional advancement. However, they believe their updated concept will prove more effective in coming years because, if properly implemented, it will forge deeper bonds and lead to greater opportunities than its more superficial predecessor ever could. In Networlding, the authors explain their practice as a "purposeful process of collaboration" among individuals who "share similar intent, values, goals, and interests." They then lay out a seven-step system for developing such mutually beneficial personal relationships, ranging from the establishment of "a values-rich foundation" through the formation and cultivation of a circle of "connections" with whom you "co-create opportunities" that move everyone ahead. There are plenty of specifics, exercises, and real-life examples here for those serious about attempting this technique. It should prove applicable for almost anyone in any type of business situation and virtually any stage of his or her career. --Howard Rothman

            Book Description

A career safety net for the new economy, Networlding shows you how to build the mutually beneficial relationships that are the real keys to job satisfaction, career advancement, and personal fulfillment in the 21st century. They explain how you can use networlding to generate a constant flow of exciting opportunities for expanding your career, starting a new business, or launching a community project. A wealth of practical tools, including quizzes, exercises, and risk-free simulations, help you create the kind of connections that are today's best catalysts for career success.

            Customer Reviews:

            5 out of 5 stars AWESOME!!!!!.......2007-05-07

The co-author team that wrote this book was on the money. If your tired of the old ways of networking and your looking for a newer system that is reciprocal and more meaningful. Than go no further. The author's create an environment of understanding and implementation to the reader of their ideas of networlding and backing those ideas with some great resources. A must read if your a dreamer or trying to move ahead!

1 out of 5 stars Do Not Waste Your Time With This Book!.......2004-02-15

Some people write books for the sake for writing. Some people claim to be smarter than others by assunming others are stupid. Both are true for this book!

It is always annoying to read books that tell nothing but common knowledge. The authors recycle ideas from any five books that one can find from library, then put them in an order that is not necessarily logical anyway. For example, after claiming how great this "networlding" idea is, the book suggest you start with "friends, family, cusotmers, colleagues, vendors" with probably average 5 lines of explanation under each. Sounds intriguing, eh? The book suggests some important quality for one to be succcessful in "networlding": "supportive, continuous communicating, good listener, responsible, influential, knowledgeable, empathic, appreciative..." and again providing five line explanation. How original is this? I guess if I look up any dictionary, I can find another couple thousand words that I can argue that if you don't have them, you are not going to be successful, in anything, networlding or not!

What is the most annoying about this book is that it tries to differentiate so called "networlding" with the networking people know. If the concept of networlding had been so different, then it would have been acceptable. Instead, the book assumes that every "networker" just constantly passes out business cards. It is almost offensive to any networkers with reasonable skills. For example, one of the most important messages in the book is that "networlders" discreminate their network by value. First, any people into network knows about this. Second, the examples provided in the book to prove this are nothing new - so and so and so and so are good friends, then suddenly one day one finds a job for another. Logically, such examples don't even support the arguments.

Unfortunately, there are tons of books out there that do not offer anything other than common knowledge that no one can object. Good books, however, offer original ideas or constructive suggestions. This is not a good book. This is a book that the authors simply assume the readers are stupid. Do not waste your time on it.

            5 out of 5 stars Networlding.......2002-12-31

Is swapping business-cards a waste of time? Yes, and no! This book is about taking networking to the next level - Networlding. Networking is for lazy people!

The book includes a step-by-step approach to the 'art' of networlding. Basically the book is about managing your relationships, and building/developing relationships with people who share your set of values and beliefs. It will introduce a risk to your relationships since you will be communicating your goals and values early on in the process - risking rejection. This is probably a more honest approach, and definitely the best way to find and build mutually beneficial, win-win relationships.

How do you accomplish this? The book suggests a seven step process - cycle that repeat itself. It all starts with finding out what means the most to you - your foundation. You will then learn to populate your primary, secondary and possibly tetriary circle depending on the nature of your current relationships. How do you create a mutual exchange, and nurture your relationships is the next question. Before it is time to re-create your networld, the book will discuss how to co-create opportunities.

I liked the book! I have not yet implemented its strategies, but it immediately made me think about relationships in a new way, to be more concerned with maintaining the right relationsships and finding the give-take balance. If I ask for information, I try to give something back. This is an area of my life that will continue to be important, and I'm convinced that I will apply the parts from the book that I find useful. I'm sure that there is at least a few tips that you will find useful in this book!

5 out of 5 stars Viral marketing at the personal level, November 9, 2002.......2002-11-09

I found the book fascinating. Couldn't put it down. For those of you in the marketing world viral marketing (or word of mouth, or buzz...all the same thing) thrives on virusworthiness, defined as an ability to stand out from the crowd. That's what this book shows you how to do, not on a product level, but on a personal level. After filling my copy with marginal notes and underscores I started over again with Chapter three to more clearly establish the goals and values that make my relationships more valuable, both to myself and my partners. This book gives you an opportunity to reinvent yourself. Without a clearly defined direction in life many of us engage in meaningless, for both parties, relationships that consume precious time and go nowhere. Melissa and Jocelyn have presented a roadmap out of this morass. Anyone with ambitions for growth, whether personal or corporate-wise, needs to postion themselves within the proper environment. The seven step plan outlined in this book is as potent a personal marketing plan as any marcom strategy statement I have written in 25 years of developing marketing strategies for many of the nations leading software companies.

2 out of 5 stars another trendy very very lite book on networking.......2002-09-24

I did not buy into the authors concept of NetWorlding. I was looking for a book that was more practical - their approach is very administrative full of trendy verbiage, like the title -'NetWorlding'. To really understand networking you need to understand politics - the best networkers are usually politically astute. Check out 'The Secret Handshake' by Kathleen Kelley Reardon. It has a much deeper and useful treatment of how to build and manage usable connections.

                Book Description

With the development of space-travel, we have begun to explore worlds beyond Earth. Ten planetary scientists describe their favorite planet, what they have discovered, and what drives them to explore. Each tells a personal story, ranging across the breadth of the solar system--from hellish Mercury to the snows of Pluto; from telescopic to robotic exploration; from adventures in Antarctica to painting planetary landscapes; from the frustration of failure to the joy of success. Worlds Beyond is the third in a series of books bringing together leading space scientists to describe their work. Our Worlds was the first of its kind in revealing the inner motivations of planetary scientists. Our Universe explored the vastness of the Universe itself. Now, with Worlds Beyond, we return to our home--the solar system--to visit those fascinating new worlds beyond our own. S. Alan Stern is Director of the Department of Space Studies at Southwest Research Institute in Boulder, Colorado. He is a planetary scientist and astrophysicist with observational and theoretical interests. Stern is an avid pilot and a principal investigator in NASA's planetary research program, and he was selected to be a NASA space shuttle mission specialist finalist. He is the author of more than one hundred papers and popular articles. He is also the author of Pluto & Charon (Wiley, 1997).

                  Book Description

The rapidly-developing field of confined polymers is reviewed in this volume. Special emphasis is given to polymer aspects of this interdisciplinary problem. Taken together, the contributions offer ample evidence of how the field of polymer science continues to evolve with the passage of time. The topics revolve around the tendency of surfaces to impede chain relaxation and to stimulate new sorts of chain organization. These have been implicated in a variety of spectacular phenomena. In 1972, the town of DeClare, Oklahoma, was consumed by the terrifying murder of Gaylene Harjo and the disappearance of her baby, Nicky Jack. When the child's pajama bottoms were found on the banks of Willow Creek, everyone feared Nicky Jack was dead, although his body was never found. Nearly thirty years later, Nicky Jack mysteriously returns to DeClare. His sudden reappearance will stun the people of DeClare and stir up long-buried emotions and memories. But what Nicky Jack discovers among the people who remember the night he vanished is far more than he, or anyone, bargains for. Piece by piece emerges a story of dashed hopes, desperate love, and a shocking act with repercussions that will cry out for justice...and redemption.

Full of the authentic heartland characters that Billie Letts writes about so beautifully, SHOOT THE MOON is a hypnotic tale filled with suspense and emotional truth. It further establishes Billie Letts as an American writer to be reckoned with—an original storyteller whose words go straight to our heart.

Billie Letts creates a wonderful story in Shoot the Moon. She holds you captive until the very end with her twists and turns in the plot. Her characters are so intriguing. I highly recommend this book.

I don't know where Billie Letts gets all these characters. This is a good book and one that keeps you turning the pages. The story line was good and I love the twists and turns that keep you guessing. I gave it 4 stars because there are so many characters that it is sometimes difficult to keep up with all of them. However the main charcters are like people you know. I would recommend this for a good read.

4 out of 5 stars A departure and new direction for Billie Letts.......2007-04-23

I've read several of Ms Letts' novels and have loved each and every one of them. Her characters were a tad on the eccentric side and her writing made me care about all of them.

Her newest novel, though, is somewhat different. In the first place, though it doesn't quite fall in the genre, it could easily be termed a mystery - something I wasn't prepared for when I picked up this book. In the second place, at least one, possibly two, of the characters in "Shoot the Moon" is a definite SOB - O Boy Daniels, the local sheriff; and Arthur McFadden, his half-brother and owner of the local radio station.

The plot in and of itself is nothing to write home about. Mark Albright, a Hollywood veterinarian, discovers after his parents deaths that he was adopted and manages to trace his roots back to DeClare, Oklahoma. He travels to DeClare to find out about his biological parents and winds up in the middle of a small-town drama. Turns out his mother was killed when he was a baby, and until he showed up the town thought he was dead too.

The rest of the book concerns Mark's search for himself (as Mark Albright and as Nicky Jack Harjo, the name he was born with), for his parents, and for the killer of his mother. Along the way we meet and get to know several interesting characters, on both sides of the moral fence - the aforementioned sheriff and radio station owner; Teeve Harjo, owner of the local mom-and-pop store and her pregnant daughter Ivy; and Hap Duchamp, local lawyer and Matt Donaldson, the local fire chief - the unlikeliest couple, gay or straight, that you will ever run across.

The only fault I can find with this story is that Letts didn't give full descriptions of her characters until the story was well under way. It took me a while to realize that Mark and his biological mother were Native Americans, which turns out to be central to the plot. But once that confusion was cleared up it turns out that "Shoot the Moon" is a wonderful small-town mystery by someone who, it seems, could write another one if she wanted to.

3 out of 5 stars Certainly not the best by Billie Letts.......2006-10-11

While I couldn't seem to put the book down, I believe it was mainly to see if it all turned out the way I predicted. It did. I couldn't pin down the "who done it" but thought it was someone connected to O Boy. I loved "Where the Heart Is" and truly expected more from this author. The book read like a bad Lifetime movie.

3 out of 5 stars (Really 3.5 stars) Under the moon, in a week..........2006-08-22

This was a great after-work, getaway book. The story line was unique and interesting to me (Veterinarian, my father; adopted, me).
Dr. Mark Albright, Hollywood Veterinarian complete with fancy car and uptight clothing, mourns the loss of his parents and soon discovers he has a 'past' that he can not remember. He was adopted at 10 months old, never being told, and he begins his search with the only piece of information he has... His original birth cert. listing Gaylene Hjaro as his birthmother.
Dr. Albright soon discovers he is really Nicky Jack Hjaro, who was thought dead at 10 mnths old after his mothers (sort of unresolved) murder 30 years before.
We meet some interesting folks along the way, but most charachters are not fully developed. The relationship between Mark (NickyJack) and Ivy, and even Ivy's mother would have been unforgettable if Mrs. Letts had dug a little deeper.
All in all.... Good plot, quick read, entertaining mini-twists.
3.5 stars. Would recommend for it's content and simpleness (every once in a while one just needs a little quirky, nonsensical romance with a twist, that may be read in a few days!), not for it's lasting ability.

There's so much death and gloom in the thriller world these days that a book daring to offer a relatively happy ending deserves special notice. It's not that nobody dies in former Federal Bureau of Narcotics agent Joseph T. Klempner's antic, upbeat new thriller--it's just that they're almost all bad guys. Aside from the fact that he's out of work, a recent widower, and the father of a 6-year-old daughter with mysterious, recurrent headaches, New York accountant Michael Goodman leads a charmed life. The spare tire on the car he rents while on a futile job hunt in Florida just happens to hold enough high-grade heroin to jump start anyone's life. When various law enforcement agencies ignore his attempts to turn it in, Goodman decides to unload it himself. Joseph Klempner's former employer probably won't find the dueling posses of bumbling drug agents as funny as other readers, but you can't please everybody. Klempner's last thriller, the bleaker but equally inventive Felony Murder, is available in paperback.

                            1 out of 5 stars hack fiction.......2001-06-11

Shoot the Moon is perhaps the worst novel I have ever read. It concerns a hapless Everyman who gets in over his head when he discovers a load of pure smack in the spare of his rental car. What follows is even less original. The central premise is this: will this Everyman ("Goodman"...!), who is driven to drug-dealing to pay for his daughter's medical bills (at least it's not a sick-mother-in-need-of-surgery), successfully unload his product on the mean streets of New York? Despite the author's alleged background as a narcotics agent, there isn't a single character or line of dialogue that rings true here. But most annoying is the design of our "hero", a pathetic milquetoast who spends more time with the stray cat he shelters than with his so-called "Angel", his sickly 6-year old daughter who's been dumped with an uncaring Grandma just a few short blocks away. The transliterated "street-jive" of the token hustlers and junkies is ridiculous, not to mention bigoted and insulting. Then there's the myriad of other stock-types who pop-up, then disappear just as quickly. Worst of all, the book is filled with typos and other errors -- a testament to the disinterest which St. Martin's editors and printers have shown toward their own product.

3 out of 5 stars OK for the airplane or beach.......1999-07-24

Nice airplane or beach reading, this book is that sort of "witty" crime story featuring "characters" in both the underworld and law enforcement who all stumble their way through a big drug deal, providing lots of slang and "insider" info as they do. Like Elmore Leonard or Carl Hiassen, it's good fun, could make a good movie, but nothing that's going to stick with you. Actually Klempner does a pretty good job juggling the hero and his sidekicks with the NYCPD trying to take him down, the Bronx gangsters who are trying to rip him off, the Cuban gangsters trying to get even, and the mafia he's trying to deal with... In its zest to make everything work out and have all the lose ends tied up, the plot relies a little too much on police bumbling, and a crucial ally who betrays her past, but other than that it's fine.

5 out of 5 stars Clever story premise. Interesting main character. Good read........1999-06-09

This book was fun. Great story that grabs you early on. Sympathetic main character that is an "everyman" one can easily identify with. Well-written. Author seems to have a knowledge of police procedures without needlessly "showing-off" that knowledge - information is only described as necessary for the story. Police are probably depicted as dumber than they are, but hey, what do I know? Maybe this *is* close to mark -- if so, we should be worried. Nice depiction of a father-daughter relationship that you dont always see in novels of this kind.

                            5 out of 5 stars From Booklist , August 19, 1997.......1998-10-06

Following on the heels of his well-received first novel, Felony Murder (1995), Klempner has scored another success. Michael Goodman is an out-of-work accountant, trying to single-handedly support a seriously ill daughter after the death of his wife. On a journey from New York to Fort Lauderdale for a disastrous job interview, he discovers millions of dollars worth of drugs in the trunk of his rental car. Being a basically honest guy, he tries to turn them over to the police, but they keep rebuffing him. With mounting medical bills in mind, he succumbs to temptation and takes the drugs home. He is not any better selling the drugs than he was in his interview, and he rapidly falls under the scrutiny of multiple law-enforcement and criminal organizations. All of them see him as their chance for a big score. Klempner's style is both engaging and humorous, and he maintains a skillful level of suspense throughout the story. Big fun. From Kirkus Reviews , June 15, 1997 Think it would be fun to be sitting on top of something worth a cool $5 million? Not when the something is primo heroin....Readers who root for the good guys will enjoy the special challenge posed by Goodman, too nice to do time for dealing (so he can't be caught) but too principled to make a killing from selling heroin (so he can't get away).-- Copyright ©1997, Kirkus Associates, LP.
