5 out of 5 stars Effective refresher ... Efficient reference.......2007-01-07

I recommend this text to financial professionals I teach ... VERY helpful to clear the cobwebs several years after college!

3 out of 5 stars Great for more advanced courses...........2006-12-12

I bought this book as a study aid for my Elementary Statistics class. Although the book does give you many examples to help solve, it gets a little too complicated for a beginning statistics class. It became hard to sort through the things I needed to gain a basic understanding of the fundamentals of statistics. If you are needing this book for your job or a more advanced statistics course, I would recommend it, but it's one for the beginner to leave alone.

4 out of 5 stars Comprehensive Guide to Statistics.......2006-06-13

This excellent book provides a comprehensive look at statistical methods. It's a great reference guide with 19 chapters, each of which build nicely on one another.

Chapters 1 through 11 lay the foundation of statistical study and the reader should benefit greatly from this framework.

Specifically, Chapters 1 through 3 cover Variables and Graphs, Frequency Distributions and Mean-Median-Mode concepts. Chapters 4 through 6 move on to cover Standard Deviation, Skewness and Elementary Probability Theory. Chapter 7 then discusses Binomial, Normal and Poisson Distributions.

Chapters 8, 9, 10 and 11 delve into Sampling, Statistical Estimation, Statistical Decision and Small Sampling Theory.

The remaining chapters offer practical insights into such topics as Chi-Square test, Correlation Theory, Analysis of Variance (ANOVA), Time Series Analysis and Statistical Process Control. Much of this appears in the CFA curriculum and therefore is a worthy supplemental study.

True to its format, this Schaum's book helps readers via its question and answer format in each of its chapters. Going through these problems teaches and reinforces concepts taught in the first pages of each chapter in the book.

Great job authors! I'm hoping others will benefit from this book too.

4 out of 5 stars Schaum's Outline of Statistics.......2006-03-03

This is a handy desk guide to statistics for someone who needs a statistical referemce as part of their job but is not a statistician, ie, performance management, data preparation or other information analysis. I compared this book to many others and found it the most comprehensive.

1 out of 5 stars A Failed Attempt .......2005-01-12

This book is sloppily edited, with numerous typos in the equations. Page 91 has two symbolic errors plus a text error.
Overbar omitted twice on page 19 giving a nonsensical formula Z = (X - X)/s

Book Description

Modelling with the Itô integral or stochastic differential equations has become increasingly important in various applied fields, including physics, biology, chemistry and finance. However, stochastic calculus is based on a deep mathematical theory.

This book is suitable for the reader without a deep mathematical background. It gives an elementary introduction to that area of probability theory, without burdening the reader with a great deal of measure theory. Applications are taken from stochastic finance. In particular, the Black-Scholes option pricing formula is derived. The book can serve as a text for a course on stochastic calculus for non-mathematicians or as elementary reading material for anyone who wants to learn about Itô calculus and/or stochastic finance.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great Introduction.......2007-09-01

This book provides an excellent mild introduction of stochastic calculus and stochastic differential equations to someone like me who do not have a first mathematics degree (haven't done measure theories). Although the final chapter on application to finance is not as good as other financial maths books such as Joshi's Concepts and Baxter&Rennie's Financial Calculus. Overall, this book sets some firm grounds for further studies on stochastic calculus & financial maths. In addition, the price is low for this book with a hardcover.

1 out of 5 stars Not for beginners or intermediates.......2007-03-04

This book may be fine if you have at least an undergraduate degree in math. I have an engineering degree with a minor in math, have read many books on quantitative finance, read math books and work math problems for furn, have several years' work experience in analyzing and hedging with derivatives, am taking a course in quantitative finance, and have worked many problems in stochastic calculus. I was actually MORE confused AFTER reading this book (I'm not exaggerating). This book should definitely not have "elementary" in the title.

But whatever your level, there are other books that cover the topic much more clearly and comprehensively. Start with Nefti's Intro to the Mathematics of Financial Derivatives; it's the best. Then read Joshi's Concepts and Practices of Mathematical Finance. Then you may be able to understand Steele's Stochastic Calculus and Financial Applications. Steele doesn't pretend to be a book for beginners, but it is actually more comprehensible to beginners than Mikosch's book.

But if you are more comfortable with reams of mathematical notation and do not require much explanation of that notation, Mikosch may be just what you want.

5 out of 5 stars A well organised and high standard little book.......2007-01-17

It is amazing that the author can expose the difficult topics step-by-step clearly in such a little book of less than 200 pages. Mikosch starts the book by introducing basic probability theories and stochastic processes which are prerequisite for the development of stochastic integrals, techniques for solving stochastic differential equations and applications in modern finance. However, reader should be aware that although the book is recommended for those without "deep" mathematical background, it is not suitable for average advanced undergraduates and practitioners without serious statistics and advanced claculus trainings. In my opinion, this book is suitable for those whos have finished the book like Financial Calculus by Baxter and Rennie and are looking for more formal details of the subject matter.

5 out of 5 stars Best introduction.......2007-01-08

if you're looking for an introduction to stochastic calculus that uses english and pictures instead of mathematical symbols, this is the place to start. only problem is that it doesn't cover very much, just the very basics. much easier than oksendel. i wish it covered as much.

5 out of 5 stars Best start.......2006-11-30

This is an excellent book to start with before reading any book on continuous time finance.
The author actually spends only the last dozen of pages related to finance, but you get all the preparation you need before learning about derivatives pricing.

Who was the first to write about a certain disease, diagnose it, and treat it? This book answers those questions for a wide range of diseases, from Abetalipoproteinemia to Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. What were the medical practitioners of previous generations hoping to achieve? What were their patients expecting of them? The answers are found in these quotations.Containing over 3,000 entries, and now updated with more than 450 new quotations, this new edition of Medicine in Quotations is the most comprehensive collection of its type published in over 30 years. It is much more than a random collection of famous sayings relating to sickness and health, disease and treatment; it is a portrait of medicine throughout recorded history. You will discover how medical concepts and practices have developed and shifted through the millennia, and how many illnesses recognized today were first identified a thousand or more years ago. Quotations are organized by topic, and each is fully referenced, allowing curious readers to return to the original source. Subject and author indices make it easy to find quotations of interest. Medicine in Quotations is an invaluable resource for writers, speakers, and all those interested in the history of medicine.

                      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars New, comprehensive, educational.......2000-08-08

With over 400 books in my collection of quotation books, some dating back 400+ years, I feel confident in saying that this book is a welcome addition in a field where so many are just spun off small presses without adding anything to the field.

A good quotation book is, by my mind, subject categorized (as opposed to alphabetically categorized by author,) with solid info on the quotation sources, providing a mix of most familiar quottes with some solid new nuggets of wisdom.

This book meets these criteria, taking the idea of a medical quotation book a step further than the previous "classic standard" of medical quotations, Familiar Medical Quotations, edited by Maurice Strauss, which is now 30 years old (though some of my favorites are much older than that, including Harbottle and Dalbiac, Hoyt, Allibone, Tryon Edwards, and Stephenson.)

Another indication of a great quotation book is the attention the editors or collectors pay to the subject headings. This book is a treasure trove of subject headings which have never appeared in a quotation book before, such as: mitral stenosis, molecular biology, rheumatoid spondylitis, specialization, concussion and constipation to aging, with classic quotables, like Aristotle, Petrarch and Duc de La Rochefoucauld, to more modern scientists and physicians, like Ignatz Semmelweis, William Mayo, Rene Dubos and Hans Selye.

The best quotation books help you discover new writers you want to delve into more deeply, by giving you enough information and inspiring or stimulating thoughts so you seek out the full text source. This book does this too. It's a great read, full of illuminating ideas.

                        Book Description

The ability to understand and control the unique properties of interfaces has created an entirely new field of magnetism which already has a profound impact in technology and is providing the basis for a revolution in electronics. The last decade has seen dramatic progress in the development of magnetic devices for information technology but also in the basic understanding of the physics of magnetic nanostructures. This volume describes thin film magnetic properties and methods for characterising thin film structure topics that underpin the present 'spintronics' revolution in which devices are based on combined magnetic materials and semiconductors. Volume IV deals with the fundamentals of spintronics: magnetoelectronic materials, spin injection and detection, micromagnetics and the development of magnetic random access memory based on GMR and tunnel junction devices. Together these books provide readers with a comprehensive account of an exciting and rapidly developing field. The treatment is designed to be accessible both to newcomers and to experts already working in this field who would like to get a better understanding of this very diversified area of research.

There is no one in contemporary literature quite like Barbara Kingsolver. Her dialogue sparkles with sassy wit and earthy poetry; her descriptions are rooted in daily life but are also on familiar terms with the eternal. With Prodigal Summer, she returns from the Congo to a "wrinkle on the map that lies between farms and wildness." And there, in an isolated pocket of southern Appalachia, she recounts not one but three intricate stories.

Exuberant, lush, riotous--the summer of the novel is "the season of extravagant procreation" in which bullfrogs carelessly lay their jellied masses of eggs in the grass, "apparently confident that their tadpoles would be able to swim through the lawn like little sperms," and in which a woman may learn to "tell time with her skin." It is also the summer in which a family of coyotes moves into the mountains above Zebulon Valley:

The ghost of a creature long extinct was coming in on silent footprints, returning to the place it had once held in the complex anatomy of this forest like a beating heart returned to its body. This is what she believed she would see, if she watched, at this magical juncture: a restoration.
The "she" is Deanna Wolfe, a wildlife biologist observing the coyotes from her isolated aerie--isolated, that is, until the arrival of a young hunter who makes her even more aware of the truth that humans are only an infinitesimal portion in the ecological balance. This truth forms the axis around which the other two narratives revolve: the story of a city girl, entomologist, and new widow and her efforts to find a place for herself; and the story of Garnett Walker and Nannie Rawley, who seem bent on thrashing out the countless intimate lessons of biology as only an irascible traditional farmer and a devotee of organic agriculture can. As Nannie lectures Garnett, "Everything alive is connected to every other by fine, invisible threads. Things you don't see can help you plenty, and things you try to control will often rear back and bite you, and that's the moral of the story."

Structurally, that gossamer web is the story: images, phrases, and events link the narratives, and these echoes are rarely obvious, always serendipitous. Kingsolver is one of those authors for whom the terrifying elegance of nature is both aesthetic wonder and source of a fierce and abiding moral vision. She may have inherited Thoreau's mantle, but she piles up riches of her own making, blending her extravagant narrative gift with benevolent concise humor. She treads the line between the sentimental and the glorious like nobody else in American literature. --Kelly Flynn

                                Book Description

Barbara Kingsolver's fifth novel is a hymn to wildness that celebrates the prodigal spirit of human nature, and of nature itself. It weaves together three stories of human love within a larger tapestry of lives amid the mountains and farms of southern Appalachia. Over the course of one humid summer, this novel's intriguing protagonists face disparate predicaments but find connections to one another and to the flora and fauna with which they necessarily share a place.

4 out of 5 stars A Real 'Chestnut' - Paints the Appalachian Life with a Blend of Characters.......2007-10-09

After reading the Poisonwood Bible- which I loved- I picked up this novel as the next one to read by the same great author. I was delighted by Kingsolver's description of the three inter-woven stories that blend human nature with mother nature. Kingsolver's compelling storytelling gives the southern Appalachian mountain range center stage for the characters to come to life. I could easily picture the Appalachia forest, the hollows and vales that surround the little community of Egg Creek, and it was a visual delight.

The lives of the characters intertwine with both the topography and the shared family connections that are revealed in due time as the story plays out. It took some time to unravel the many members of Lusa's family, but eventually they came together. I laughed out loud at Nannie Rawley and Garnett- the two bickering old folks who stubbornly fought each others diametric opinions only to find common ground in the end. I can still picture with great amusement of Garnett dragging himself through the muck, thinking he was having a heart attack only to be humiliated by Nanny who informs him that he has a snapping turtle clamped onto his leg as he struggles to get away, with his pride injured.

Yes, I'm sure Ms. Kingsolver had an agenda about how mankind has altered nature and upset the natural balance, but it stuck with me. It made me think just how delicate and easily the chain of wildlife could be disrupted by man's attempt to challenge the innate certainty of what his view of "order" should be. By the end of the book I felt the arch of the story had come full circle to complete the closure of the 3 interwoven stories. I finished the book feeling satisfied and contented.

Then I baked a blackberry pie and started at the beginning again.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Language and Weaving of a Story.......2007-10-04

I have been a fan of Barbara Kingsolver ever since I stumbled across her book "The Bean Trees" in the public library when I was about 15. This book is certainly as amazing as any of her other work I have read.

What I was immediately struck by was the amazing use of language that Kingsolver has. Her masterful use of words slows you down and you want to save them. There is something sexy about the way she describes nature.

Not only is the use of words wonderful, but the writing is clever. Kingsolver uses nature as a backdrop to compare and contrast the various relationships she has created; the various narrators that she uses.

I also enjoyed that we, the readers, know more about the characters than they do. She leaves the characters with their futures waiting and while I would love to know more about them, I was still satisifed with the end.

                                Terrific Read.

Barbara Kingsolver has a way with words, the words that describe nature, give it life, give it a personality of its own. Nature is a main character, a life force, and important lessons are learned from this novel. A lovely read.

4 out of 5 stars Nature thrives in this wonderful story.......2007-08-28

Once I read Barbara Kingsolver's "The Poisonwood Bible", I began reading all her books. The Prodigal Summer was a bit of a let down for me. It was a wonderful story, but I didn't think it was up to her standard. Normally, her characters are well-developed but in this story they just seemed to be lost in the message of organic farming and other environmental issues by the author. These are important subjects and they are told very well as only the biologist writer can do. However, these issues just came across as a bit too patronizing and relationship that I had hoped would develop with the characters just seemed to be fuzzy. Still, the book was an excellent read. There was a bit good humor, an unbelievable insight into the feelings and emotions of women and a priceless education and view of the world of nature. All this rolled up into a wonderful story that I would highly recommend to all my friends.

Another Woman's Fiction that reveals the emotions and feelings of women is Gathering of Cans by Robert L. Saunders. This refreshing story is a real stunner. In this romance with a bit of mystery story the author heralds the relationship between husband and wife. I read this warm and wonderful story and I wasn't disappointed. You will travel with Zoie Baker, the heroine, on her quest to build a swimming pool by gathering aluminum cans. She feels right down to her bones that this is her destiny. Unique cans that she stumbles on, i.e., Nehi, Mountain Dew, etc., takes the reader on a glorious journey in the life of Zoie from World War II where she meets her soon to be husband, Nat, a Marine, through the 1980's. This gripping story will keep you up to read just one more chapter. Check it out. You too won't be disappointed! Bye.

I agree with a few previous reviews....It was really good. I am not like other reviewers..I don't psycho-analize every thing that Cornwell writes...Its a book, written for entertainment. The Characters have depth. As with all her other books. It was a great read. Don't let others allow you to miss a good book!!!

5 out of 5 stars Really Gross but Really Good.......2007-09-14

I was really surprised to come here and see how many people hated this book. I thought it had a great mix of horrific and heroic characters, and it was really scary, to the point that sometimes I was afraid to read what was coming next.
I was surprised about the reappearance of one character, but the plot twists required to bring this off were wonderful. These plot surprises didn't ruin the book for me, and I enjoyed following the adventures of Doc, Pete, Lucy, and the introduction of Nic, a new forensic investigator (she's Doc's protege). I also really enjoyed the different scenes cutting in and out, back and forth-the short chapters made it possible for me to make it through the book. This book was a nice ending for the following subgrouping of her books: Point of Origin, Black Notice, Last Precinct, and Blow Fly.

                                      1 out of 5 stars extremely disappointed.......2007-08-02

I am "trying" hard to finish this book. I have a 1/4 of it yet to go, and it is difficult to keep going. The book is like a jumble of words and misplaced sentences. I have to keep referring to previous chapters and pages, just to try to follow it. In many places, it doesn't make sense and I am tired of trying to figure it out. It doesn't flow like her other books. I havent read a cornwell book in a few years. Her first 3 or 4 books I couldnt put down. Read them in 2 days tops. But lately, just aweful. I hope she gets it together and brings Scarpetta back to her sense!!!

                                      1 out of 5 stars Ditto.......2007-08-02

I won't repeat what other posts have said, but I would like to add my vote for worst Cornwell book. Having just started the series a few weeks ago (I have a few weeks off work), I quickly got hooked and now am extremely disappointed. This is a horrible book, once again for the reasons people mentioned: bad, anticlimactic ending; unbelievable "surprise twist," change to third person, plot jumping all over the place, etc.

I accidentally read Predator out of order and that one was horrible as well. The reviews for Trace seem bad as well. Three strikes and you're out, Cornwell!

1 out of 5 stars What happened to this series?.......2007-07-18

After reading my late mother's copies of UNNATURAL EXPOSURE and BODY FARM, I eagerly checked out Kay Scarpetta mysteries at my local library. Then I checked out BLOW FLY, even though some of the earlier entries weren't available at the time. The third person format was very dull. I quit long before the end. In fact, I didn't care enough to check the end of the book to see what happened.

1 out of 5 stars Worst Book Ever.......2007-07-26

This was the worst book I ever read. I don't know if this was supposed to be a fairy tale or a Stephen King-type thriller. It certainly wasn't a murder mystery. The character Chandonne has been stretched way past the point of believability.

This requires much more than the suspension of disbelief.
