A Must Read for Those Considering the Independent Lifestyle.......2000-03-13

After reading many books on the subject of different forms of business and taxation/liability issues, I found that Bruce D. Bernard's book was the only source that was comprehensive enough for me. This book does a fine job of exploring the details of alternate forms of business as well as summarizing the various forms of business. This book enabled me to do a complete analysis of my decision using my numbers and the facts that were presented in his book. I hope he updates his book soon.

There are a number of books on personalities. I find this one better organized and more practical than others. Dr. Rohm's ability to simplify is most appreciated. His system of organizing the 4 basic personalities and orientations into "outgoing" and "reserved" with "task" and "people" orientation is simple to remember and easy to identify. His summary illustrations are excellent and assist the learning process. Although this book is written with the network marketing business in mind, it is applicable to all people.

As a physician, I have found that most college psychology and medical school psychiatry courses concentrate on the abnormal with little or no emphasis paid to the normal. After such courses we tend to think of the abnormal as nothing more than extreme extentions of the normal. Nothing could be further from the truth.

I recommend this book to all who wish to understand themselves and others better, achieve better relationships,and learn team building. We all have strengths and weaknesses. It is possible to learn to use our strengths in concert with others and turn our out-of-control weaknesses into strengths.

Wonderful Background and Analysis, but no academic description.......2007-09-30

This book is a wonderful collection of both Alice books, accompanied by full annotations and examples of the original poems and concepts that many of the musings in the works are based on. Anyone who is interested in Alice, Wonderland, and/or the Looking-Glass should get this book, as it provides wonderful analysis and background of the author and the girl the protagonist is modeled after. It also explains some of the less obvious jokes by explaining their origins.

I also like how the annotations reference other works of analysis on Alice. There is also a list in the back of many Alice-related works sorted by category. This shows that a lot of effort was put into this book and its integrity.

Unfortunately, there are a few cons. If you are looking to buy this for assistance on a book report or project, I must warn you that the notes in this book aren't tailored for academic analysis, but more broad literary analysis. In other words; the symbols and motifs aren't as important to the author as the linguistic jokes, puns, and concepts are. Also, the wonderfully designed cover is really only a paper cover, something not discernible from the online picture.

I haven't had the chance to delve deeply into this one yet, but I love the layout. The original story is in the middle and the notes are on the outside margins. They provide excellent insight into the depth of the story and the outside motivating factors.

This book is another sterling recommendation from the Saltzman workshop. The under-appreciated Fante's second outing details the adventures of his alterego, Arturo Bandini, as the struggling young writer tackles Los Angeles in the late 1930s. And take it from personal experience, tackling L.A. as a destitute young scribe some decades later isn't much different. In other words: Fante gets it right and sets it down in his Chianti-steak-and-potatoes style, with prose both simple and rich. This Black Sparrow edition has a bonus: Charles Bukowski's great preface on how Fante stacks up against writers that were at once more famous--and far more anemic.

Solid book.......2007-07-22

This book is so good that being keep taking it from my shelf. I read this as a senior in high school. Recently I returned to it and found that its held up over the years. It may be better now that I've gone through some crazy women, plus fits of jealousy over them. I love the scene where he's reading his rival's story... great.

Beautiful, melodic language and a poignant character drive this novel, and I can see how those who might identify with Bandini and/or like the Hunter-S.-Thompson-style of story telling (seemingly aimless wanderings and interactions) would get something out of it. Not enough happened for me though, and I am not particularly driven to read any of the other Bandini stories.

Good, but not Fante's Best.......2007-06-07

"Ask The Dust" seems to be John Fante's most popular novel, but I'm not sure why. Perhaps its because it's the title mentioned most by Charles Bukowski. It started out strong up until the Earthquake bit, but from there on out it seems as if he was just trying to find ways to finish the book. Still, most of it is excellent writing (The conclusion to chapter 14 highlights what Fante is really capable of... truly profound powerful writing!.) However, both "Wait Until Spring..." and "Dreams from Bunker Hill" supercede "Ask..." by a substantial margin. The best aspect is how Fante, like Bukowski later did, paints a fantastically vivid picture of a bygone era in Los Angeles. Overall worth adding to your collection for any Fante, Bukowski, or Los Angeles history fan, but please read Fante's other books-- they are far superior. I sometimes think that "Ask..." gets most of its praise from Bukowski loyalists. Just remember: Blindly following what Bukowski thinks about something goes against everything he stood for! Happy reading!

Ask the Dust didn't revolutionize writing. It didn't create a new genre. There are others like Hamsun, Bukowski and many more that have written in this genre or style, but for me Ask the Dust stands taller than all the rest.

This book is such an emotional roller coaster that from one minute to the next you will alternate being choked up and depressed, to laughing out loud, to reveling in the hero's triumph and then right back to choked up and sad ready to start the ride all over again.

I enjoy this genre immensely, but Fante's Ask the Dust is the only one that I find myself continually pulling out of my book case to peruse the pages for nth time. Just seeing the book conjures up those emotions I remember from my first reading. The only bad part about reading this book was the knowledge that I would never be able to read it again for the first time. That was my only disappointment with this book.

Ask the Dust is just a really good book. I have recommended it to all my friends and loaned it out numerous times (thankfully it has always found its way back to me, so far) and have found that it gets generally very good reviews from those that I know. Now I'm recommending it to you.

This book had me laughing outloud so many times, I almost thought it was a comedy. I enjoyed reading it so much that I didn't want it to end.

John Fante, Prologue to Ask the Dust (Black Sparrow, 1990)

Actually, the title of this book is something of a misnomer; it is not a prologue to Fante's brilliant novel, it's a letter Fante wrote to his publisher (and never sent) about why said publisher should publish said novel. It was lost for half a century after being written, found by Fante's widow after his death, and published soon after by Black Sparrow.

If you know Fante's work, you probably know what to expect here. A good argument could be (and has been, many times) made for Fante being the progenitor of the beat Generation, and here, in a short piece of nonfiction, perhaps the best case is made; the style of Fante's 1938 letter obviously informed such writers as Kerouac and his crowd, though they'd have gotten their Fante fix through the novel itself, where it's somewhat diluted. This, folks, is the strong stuff, and it's utterly fantastic. Without the need to hold things together with a narrative thread, Fante jumps around like a manic patient at the lunatic asylum, always returning to Camilla, the model for Dust's man character, and Fante's obsession with her. (As a side note, Fante's inconsistent reference to himself as Arturo Bandini, the hero of his first novel, presage Bukowski's constant references to himself as Chinaski; Bukowski's love for Fante is well-known by anyone who's read Buk's many poems referencing Fante.) The portrait that emerges is of a deeply disturbed, perhaps deranged, but brilliant human being. And the note on which Fante ends the letter redefines sucker punch.

With the demise of Black Sparrow a few years back, it's probably not terribly likely this volume will see print again. If it does find its way into your local bookstore, however, snap it up. It is the stuff nightmares are made of.

If you want this book you might have to go onto EBAY or pay a bit extra for it. If you are thinking of getting it and have the opportunity to do so, but it is a little on the high side of reasonableness, get it anyways. This book is one of the best catalogs that I have ever seen. Inside is a nice long interview with the Art Lodge players. Also you will find a slew of drawings that kind of remind me of the best of Hockney's work. Hundreds of great drawings.
