      Book Description

Accomplished author and national speaker, Andrew DuBrin brings his expertise of Human Relations and Business Psychology to this ninth edition. Today’s work environment continues to demand more and more from workers. Balancing work and home, time management, cultural differences among workers, team skills, customer service, job search, career management, and effective leadership skillsare just some of the area where readers need guidance before entering the workplace. In this book, basic concepts are introduced to enhance understanding of key topics then, skill-building suggestions, exercises, and cases are presented that are crafted to improve the interpersonal skills related to each topic. Skill-building activities and self-assessment exercises include role plays and gives reader hands-on opportunities for developing practical human relations skills. Meets federal skills for Interpersonal Training and provides information and exercises that directly support components of five of the eight requirements. Ensures that readers will be able to use resources, interpersonal skills, information, systems, and technology; and will be proficient in basic skills (e.g., reading, writing, and arithmetic), thinking skills (e.g., thinking creatively), and personal qualities. Ideal for those just entering the workforce or for those who would like to improve their interpersonal skills at the workplace.

      Book Description

Good work habits, time management, computer skills, and ethics are just a few of the competencies employees will find essential in a variety of future jobs. Designed to help readers enhance their interpersonal skills in the workplace, this guide is a blend of current and traditional interpersonal topics with a strong emphasis on skill development and self-assessment. Offers a more personal and job-oriented (and less managerial) approach than other books on the subject. Introduces basic concepts to enhance understanding of key topics; then, skill-building suggestions, exercises, and cases are presented that are crafted to improve the interpersonal skills related to each topic. Provides Web Corners in each chapter that point readers to Internet resources for that chapter. Updates information throughout as appropriate, including new cases and case problems; new chapter-opening vignettes; and several new self-quizzes. Features new topics throughout: includes value stereotypes for Baby Boomers, Generation X, and Generation Y; how to prepare for stressful conversations; work-family conflict as a stressor; and much more. An ideal reference for participants in leadership and supervisory training courses that emphasize interpersonal skills, rather than leadership theory and research.

1 out of 5 stars This book is so lame that I actually recommend you avoid any class that requires it, if at all possible........2006-07-07

I really wish I could get my money back from my college bookstore. This is the textbook for a basic Human Relations class that is required for all students at the community college I attend. Human Relations is not my strongest skill so I was actually looking forward to the class and the book, expecting some information that might help me at work. Unfortunately I am really disappointed in the class and the book. The information is SO basic and obvious. It is useless to me. This is an actual quote from the book, from chapter two, which describes differences between people, one of which is VALUES:

"Under the best of circumstances, the values of employees mesh with those required by the job. When this state of congruence exists, job performance is likely to be higher. A national survey of managers investigated the fit between the values of managers and those of their organizations. (One such mesh would be a highly ethical person working for a highly ethical firm.) A major finding was that managers who experienced a good fit were more successful and more likely to believe that they could reach their career goals. They were also more confident about remaining with their present firm and more willing to work long hours."

Wow. Amazing. Who would have thunk it? And I am really glad they gave an example of a match between employee values and company values (highly ethical is a match with highly ethical, so I guess if they are the same that means they match!) That is about as educational as me telling you that when I don't hate my boss I am less likely to want to punch him in the neck. I don't know what else to say. This book is a pathetic waste of my time, money and thought processes, and I feel sorry for you if, like me, you are required to read it. Honestly, I actually keep re-reading it, thinking I must be missing the point, that there must be more to it, that it can't be so lame and pointless.... But it is!

THERE HAS TO BE A BETTER HUMAN RELATIONS TEXTBOOK OUT THERE!!!

By the way, I am also taking another class called "Business Communication" that covers similar topics. The book we are using for that class is EXCELLENT: "Business Communication: Process & Product", by Mary Ellen Guffey (5th Edition). I am so grateful to have a good textbook like that one, because unfortunately crummy books like "Human Relations" by DuBrin are all too common.

5 out of 5 stars Human Relations on the Street.......2000-08-30

I purchased this book as a required text book in one of my Criminal Justice classes. I thought it very strange to have a Human Relations text book as a requirement, but after getting into the text found it very appropriate for police work. The author points out a plethora of facts that would help anyone dealing with people on a day to day basis. It is not a large textbook, is packed full of ideas, and is easy to follow. Class time was kept at a minimum, and no extra help was needed from my professor. I believe this text would definitely be bookshelf material for those of you dealing with the public.

As a trained astronomer and someone who has both taught the subject at the college level and been published in the sub-field of native american astronomy, I was amazed that someone from outside the field could make such a valuable contribution as this book is. It's both technically sound and entertaining to read. The explanations and arguments should be easily graspable by the educated layperson or novice at astronomy. They're plausible without being outlandish.

The book is especially good at giving an appreciation for how difficult it was for early scientists to acquire the basic understandings we now take for granted. Highly recommended to those interested in either prehistoric southwest peoples or the arcane area of the development of non-western timekeeping, calendars, and observational astronomy.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting and thought provoking........1998-10-02

How did ancient peoples accurately depict the arrival of solar eclipses? They didn't have a NASA website, the concept that the earth was round, or the benefit of Copernicus' earth is not the center of the universe concept (not published until the 1500's). The author looks from Stonehenge to the walls of the Grand Canyon to the ancient Mayans to try to think how the ancients thought. It's a sort of how did we know what we knew before we should have known it puzzle. There's a lot about the degrees of the horizon, but it's still an interesting look at our past. If you're interested in native American culture then you'll enjoy the book more. While the author admits the difficulty in proving his ideas, he does outline 13 methods that might have been used and makes many interesting observations about the way things could have been.

In Search of Ancient Astronomies ed. by Dr. E.C. Krupp, 1978.

This is an excellent book in PROVING the fact of Archaeoastronomy in ancient cultures and traditions. Dr. Krupps, director of the Griffith Observatory, shows us how Stonehenge, the Maya temples, the Egyptian Pyramids and Babylonian astronomies were developed and built into ancient architecture and megaliths. He shows how the so-called primitive cultures may not have been so primitive as science automatically assumes due to over application of Darwinian theory.

The ancients possessed highly advanced mathematics, calendrics, and architecture.

Dr. Krupps, at the end of this book, also debunks popular myths such as planet hopping amphibians and lizard people. These popular myths were created because our "advanced" society is over judgmental and prejudiced in its attitude toward so-called primitive cultures. Surely these people couldn't have been advanced enough, intelligent enough, to create such amazing structures and understandings on their own - they must have had aliens who came down from Planet Xenu and did it for them. Or maybe more simply, and if we use Occam's Razor, such leaps of logic show OUR lack of ability to think critically rather than our ancestors.

Overall, a 4.5 star work. The book did have trouble drawing me in in several places, but this may be because it is composed of articles written by several scholars instead of the nice flowing of a single author or authorship team working together.

Edwin C. Krupp is the right name, if you are interested in ancient stargazing experiments. As an open minded scientist and one of the most famous archaeoastronomers, Mr Krupp gives you an excellent introduction to the ancient civilizations' astronomical secrets in this well organized and well edited book. As well as being the editor of this book, Mr Krupp also does his own contribution with a very exciting article on Ancient Egypt's most important monuments and their alignments with important stars. The book itself is a brilliant resource for newbies on archaeoastronomy, and it presents the reader a rich content extending from the mysterious builders of Stonehenge to Maya and Ancient Egypt stargazers. With a bunch of articles from the world's most important archaeoastronomers including Mr Aveni, "In Search Of Ancient Astronomies" is a must buy.

                                        Description:
Antarctic terrestrial ecosystems are noted for their relative simplicity and limited trophic structure. In this context, knowledge of biotic interactions in structuring terrestrial soil communities would seem beneficial from a theoretical perspective as well as from a conservation perspective. Unfortunately, although biotic interactions are generally seen as being insignificant in these unique ecosystems, this view is based upon few explicit studies and very little is known of the role that biotic interactions may play. Accordingly, we review our current understanding of these interactions, including analogues from other appropriate ecosystems. On the basis of this review, we conclude that: (1) Antarctic terrestrial systems are predominantly abiotically-driven systems; and (2) a network of manipulative field and laboratory experiments are needed for establishing any role for biotic interactions in structuring Antarctic soil environments.

The subject has been developed considerably and while the results are useful for predicting materials performance, the theory can also be used in a wide range of problems in physics and engineering. This book develops the topic of effective medium theory by bringing together the essentials of both the static and the dynamical theory. Electromagnetic systems are thoroughly dealt with, as well as related areas such as the CPA theory of alloys, liquids, the density functional theory and others, and the unifying aspects of the effective medium concept are emphasized. The final chapter contains a wide range of useful applications in condensed matter physics and material science.

The Thirteenth House (2006) is the second fantasy novel in the Twelve Houses series, following Mystic and Rider. In the previous volume, Senneth, Kirra, Tayse, Justin, Donnal, and Cammon left the south and journeyed to Ghosenhall to report to the King. After presenting their report, the group broke up and went their separate ways.

Queen Valri offered Cammon the use of a garden for the raelynx and visited the creature herself, even taking control of its mind for a while. The next day, Senneth took Cammon into the city to meet Jerril and Cammon agreed to spend some time learning from the mystic. Then Senneth met with the King and received the assignment of guarding the royal princess.

The King also asked Senneth to visit her brothers and suggested that she might wish to take a King's Rider with her. Senneth knew that the King was teasing her, but that he also was signaling his acceptance of her relationship with Tayse. That evening, Tayse and Senneth met outside the palace and he pledged to go wherever she went.

In this novel, Romar Brendyn -- the man selected as regnant for the king's daughter -- is abducted and taken to an almost deserted house on the edge of the Tilt domains. One of his escorts escapes and returns to Ghosenhall, reporting the kidnapping to King Baryn. Kirra, Donnal, Cammon and Justin are sent out to rescue the regnant.

Once in the isolated house, Kirra shapeshifts and visits the cell where Romar is held. She shapechanges some furnishings into useful escape tools. She also changes bars on the windows into weak wooden rods.

That night Romar breaks the rods, slithers down the rope and runs to the rendezvous in nearby woods. He is startled when Donnal -- in wolf form -- escorts him to the others, but doesn't slow down his pace. When Romar reaches the rescuers, he quickly mounts the spare horse and they gallop away.

Close to Merrenstow, the party encounters an armed group of Romar's retainers looking for him. They hand off Romar to his own men and prepare to leave. Romar doesn't want Kirra to travel with such a small escort, but she insists.

In this story, Kirra and Donnal return to Danan Hall in Danalustrous for her sister Casserah's coming of age party. Before the party, her father Malcolm tells Kirra that he is designating Casserah as his heir. Since Kirra is the eldest child, she is puzzled and hurt for a moment, but then realizes that her acceptance of becoming the heir is due only to her sense of responsibility. Like her mother, Kirra would much rather be free to wander as she pleases and soon wholeheartedly agrees with her father.

Casserah is very much like her father. She has his landsense and is dedicated to the domain. She has always been reluctant to leave home for any reason, but now she should make herself known to the lords of other domains. Malcolm and Kirra encourage her to attend the upcoming circuit of seasonal balls, but Casserah flatly refuses. Instead, they agree that Kirra will attend in the guise of Casserah. She might even find a husband for the heir.

Thus, Kirra returns to Ghosenhall as Casserah, with only a small entourage. Of course, Donnal accompanies her, usually in the guise of a large dog. Casserah's maid Melly is included to advise Kirra on the clothing that Casserah would wear. Naturally, a pair of guards go along as her escort.

In Ghosenhall, Kirra-as-Casserah joins the ladies in the royal party. Queen Valri and Princess Amalie are planning a royal progression to introduce the lords and ladies to the formerly reclusive royal heir. Senneth accompanies Amalie as her bodyguard. Naturally, Tayse and Justin, together with two more King's Riders and twenty soldiers, are going along to provide further protection for the party.

Romar doesn't recognize Kirra at first, but soon learns her identity. He courts her and she eventually gives in to his advances. Although aware of his married state, she follows her desires and is soon spending the nights with him. Her friends all warn her that she is setting herself up for heartaches, but she doesn't want to give up Romar.

This story continues to uncover plots against King Baryn. Lestra Coralinda appears at the ball in Coravann. Her brother Halchon Gisseltess -- who is supposed to be interdicted in Gissel Plain -- shows up at the ball in Nocklyn. And Romar is attacked several times during the circuit.

Kirra also encounters red-horse fever in her travels. The illness often strikes children and causes great pain. Although able to relieve the disease symptoms for a short time, Kirra has found no way to cure the ailment.

Princess Amalie remains a mystery in this volume, although the story does bring out her unusual lack of fear and her habit of voicing outrageous responses to ordinary politic remarks. Senneth and Kirra are beginning to like the girl, but agree that she needs to gain more experience. However, they are still puzzled about her personal views and attitudes. Queen Valri is also a puzzle, but they do know that she is terrified by the risks that Amalie faces.

Highly recommended for Shinn fans and for anyone else who enjoys tales of shapeshifting mystics, traitorous intrigue, and unwise romance.

2 out of 5 stars Too slow, too bad, too boring.......2007-06-25

Twenty or thirty pages into THIRTEENTH HOUSE I decided that the only way I was gonna get through this novel was to overlook the shortcomings of a debut novel. Imagine my surprise when I came here to amazon to find that THIRTEENTH HOUSE is not Shinn's first novel, that she has a number of novels to her credit.

My problem with the novel: there's not enough suspense to hold my attention. Someone(s) is obviously plotting the king's and his daughter's demise, but that plot is secondary to the sparks flying between Kirra and Romar. How is it possible to get to page 179, as I have this evening, and nothing more has been said about three men conspiring against the king(and orchestrated Romar's kidnap) whom we read about when the book opened? How did Romar escape his imprisonment and Shinn never bother to take us back to the mansion, the men, and their reaction to his escape? There's lots of clever, witty dialogue between characters in the book, lots of characters to meet and lots of socializing to do, that only weighs down the book and keeps things from moving along.

I'm here in the sixteenth chapter of the novel this evening, and besides Romar's escape and that one failed attempt on his life during the escape -- there's been real no action, no real suspense, to make me want to keep turning the pages.

Finally, Kirra started off at the book's opening as a strong heroine with extraordinary powers, a mind of her own, a woman of adventure. By the middle of the book she's domesticated by love and boring. Sure, women are frequently clipped by love, but I'd expect a seasoned writer to complicate Kirra's downfall a bit more. Protagonists don't usually fall as swiftly and as easily as predictably as does Kirra. In short, neither Kirra-- nor the book's plot- is complex and suspenseful enough to make me want to finish this book. Too bad.

Shinn returns to the world of the Twelve Houses and her characters from Mystic and Rider, but focuses on Kirra, the shapeshifting daughter of House Danalustrous. Concerned by rumors of impending rebellion, Kirra and her companions set out to protect the Princess and test the temper of the Twelve Houses. Loyalty, tolerance, and class distinction are just a few of the thems upon which Shinn touches.

To be true, my wife read and I'm starting in some days. From her impressions, this book is a great sequel to "Mystic and Rider", and all the characters we love are back but focusing on Kirra and her relationships to the nobles and to Don.
Great reading with a lot of emotion and a great fantasy romance.

                                              4 out of 5 stars Primarily a romance..........2007-01-13

I don't think you can say, "Take out the Kirra is an idiot" plot, as if that was a side-plot. This is primarily a romance, with a bit of mystery, adventure and fantasy thrown in. Kirra certainly doesn't make wise choices, but her character is consistent with the character depicted in the first novel. Kirra IS irresponsible and reckless, so her choices reflect that. So, disagree with the wisdom (and definitely the morality!) of the main character, but that doesn't mean the book is poorly written. It's a compelling, fast, enjoyable read - and what more are we looking for in this sort of novel? I like the way each book is complete in itself, and yet has an overall plot arc, leading to a civil war (probably).

Thomas, Count of Savoy, died in 1233 a relatively obscure nobleman -- but his seven sons and two daughters rose to fame, fortune, and involvement in almost every international conflict in western Europe during the next fifty years. From Scotland to Sicily, they gained access to and marriage within every important royal house in Europe. Observed Joseph Bedier, "They did not pride themselves upon their own prowess, but upon their lineage, and each of them rejoiced to contemplate in the others, as in so many mirrors, his own image multiplied."
