4 out of 5 stars Helpful.......2005-10-11

The study guide is helpful when used along with the textbook. There is a summary of each chapter with plenty of T/F questions to determine if you understand the material from the chapters, and there are detailed explanations for false answers.

This book along with the Student Survival Guide was a great help to me. I just walked out of class with a 100 on my last test! Now for the final. Not near as nervous because these books have pushed me to remember the information that I normally wouldn't. Great buy!!

5 out of 5 stars good reference.......2004-12-15

This was a pretty good study guide to go along w/ chapters 1-14 of kieso's intermediate accounting textbook (vol.1, 11th edition). Some of the lecture notes my prof. used were taken directly from the study guide - so there was some reptition. But there are also test questions such as T/F, multiple choice, and examples/self-tests for you to work on as you go through each chapter that helped out.

The text is pretty good and thorough for intermediate accounting - sometimes the study guide was a good help as far as summarizing ideas with key terms/key ideas in bold. The T/F questions and multiple choice helped as far as narrowing down important concepts and trying to gather what was really important - this is beyond the homework/and reading the text.

Overall - a pretty good supplement to the textbook and worth getting if you are serious about accounting/business/finance in the long run.

This book is sooo boring..... it makes my finance and economics books fun. It is by far the worst book: dry and confusing. As a matter of fact, after this class is over, I am goin right ahead and sell this book because it is worthless and pointless to have it.

      Book Description

Competency development is one of the hottest topics in the HR profession. Still there is much confusion among managers about what a competency is and how to use it effectively. Here, author Paul Green draws on twenty-five years of training, consulting, and employee assessment experience to establish a behavioral language that describes, guides, and links actions at work. This is the foundation for developing clearly defined competencies that help executives, managers, and HR professionals communicate performance goals through every step of the HR process--including interviewing, appraisal, coaching, and training-in ways that directly support an organization's mission, vision, and values.

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Linking HR systems to organization's identity.......2001-09-11

"This book explains how to use behavioral competencies to link human resource (HR) systems to an organization's purpose. This linkage will help organizations better communicate to associates about how they can effectively guide their own actions...The book is written for human resource professionals, who strive to link their organization's core competencies, capabilities, values, and priorities to its human resource applications...You can expect this book to recognize and reinforce important distinctions between an organization's strategic core competencies and its individual competencies and skills. Although these distinctions are obvious to business strategists, they are a source of confusion for many in human resources who want to use competencies to reflect vision, culture, and values" (from the Preface).

In this context, Paul C. Green divides his book into two main parts:

      I. Clarifying Competencies: In this part;

      * He argues that "robust competencies help you define what was done, what is being done, and what needs to be done." And hence, he sets the stage for building robust competencies by identifying the ambiguities, challenges, and rewards of using competencies.

      * He explores the different meanings of competencies that are used in organizations and research. And he argues that "HR competency system must be job related and should reflect core competencies, capabilities, core values, and priorities."

      * He discusses operationalizing performance skills to enable you to use behavioral observation, description, and inference to communicate clearly what a person needs to do to do a job well. Here he says that "a behavior is an action that you can observe, describe, and verify."

      * He explores how the identity of an organization can become the target for alignment, and discusses how an organization's identity can be reflected in and reinforced by interviews, appraisal, coaching, and training.

II. Linking Competencies to Human Resource Systems: In this part, after briefly discussing perception-driven, experience-driven, attribute-driven, and behavior-driven approaches, he offers behavioral approach to link interviews, appraisals, coaching, and training to the identity of an organization. It emphasizes a systemic, job-related approach to support the effectiveness and defensibility of an HR system. He argues that "the linkage of HR applications is easier when the organization consistently uses a behavioral approach. Once behavioral language is used in one part of an HR system, it can be expanded to other applications."

Finally, he says that "the best answers to questions about core competencies, capabilities, core values, and priorities come from real experiences in applying them. Today, each answer is just an opinion at one point in time. However, the big question for the future will be: How can I link HR systems to my organization's identity? At present the most useful answers are those that emphasize a behavioral approach, job relatedness, nimbleness, and open mindedness."

      Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Exceptional linking of behavioral elements in HR System.......1999-11-01

Dr. Green demonstrates that the job analysis which is the basis of behavioral interviews, is also the cornerstone upon which competencies, PD's, interviews, coaching, performance measurement, and training are all built. Once the use of behavioral thinking is understood by the manager, the development of the tools and methods for selecting, developing, and managing successful people will flow from the analysis of the behaviors needed for success in any specific job.

Dr. Green goes beyond the individual in applying behavioral understandings and tools, taking them to the organizational level as well. He clearly demonstrates the linkage between high performing individuals, and high performing organizations.

A must read for any manager using Behavioral Interviewing, any trainer teaching Behavioral Interviewing, or any manager tired of spending a disproportionate share of their time and energy dealing with poor performance, low productivity, and poor morale.

While you can easily read it in a few days, you will want your own copy to highlight, make notes in, and refer to from time to time as you grow as a manager.

Earth's moon is a gray, lifeless place, interesting geologically but perhaps a little disappointing to those of us looking for strange, colorful new worlds. But our moon is only one of more than 60 planetary satellites in the solar system, most of which are entirely unexplored. In Moon Hunters (published in hardcover as Journey Beyond Selene), Jeffrey Kluger chronicles these unsung places and the heroes who explore them: the Jet Propulsion Lab's staff of dedicated adventurers, who build and fly sleek, unmanned spacecraft to investigate other moons. "When astronauts finally did reach the moon," Kluger writes, "the lean, fleet ships of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory had already gone elsewhere."

Why explore the satellites of other planets when the planets themselves remain mysterious? Kluger describes astronomers' first realization that in contrast to the lifeless gas giant Jupiter, its moons were a veritable scientific playground:

There were big moons and small moons, patterned moons and plain moons, brightly colored moons and pasty-pale moons.... There were moons that could have atmospheres, water, and even, perhaps, a spark of internal heat. Put them together, and you had moons that could, in theory, harbor life.

Moon Hunters chronicles the history of a little-understood aspect of humanity's quest to discover new worlds. From the early Ranger orbiters through the incredible journeys of Voyager and Galileo, Kluger gives credit where credit is long overdue. They may not be astronauts, but these space jockeys have the right stuff. --Therese Littleton

            Book Description

In Moon Hunters, bestselling author Jeffrey Kluger tells the thrilling story of some of the most remarkable heavenly bodies known -- the solar system's sixty-five moons -- and the extraordinary people who have explored them all. Chronicling lunar exploration from the first attempts by NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory to explore our own moon to the triumphant conquest of the outer planets, Moon Hunters is an adventure story full of drama, danger, and suspense. While taking the reader on a spellbinding journey to the eerie landscapes of the moons themselves, Moon Hunters offers a riveting account of the scientists and spacecraft responsible for unlocking the secrets of the cosmos -- and perhaps of life itself.

            Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great Book - The best account of US Unmanned space exporation.......2007-04-18

Don't overlook this book. It is extremely well written and the content held my attention from beginning to end. It is the best account I have ever read regarding the US unmanned space program from the early space race through the Apollo era. The book provides fine accounts of the people and technology involved in the unmanned program, particularly the contributions of the scientists at JPL. I'm awestruck at the technology invented by these scientists and their scientific discoveries. The JPL was often ignored in the shadow of the more popular manned space program. Moreover, I believe the discoveries discussed in "Moon Hunters" contribute more to space science than the manned space program. The book is easy to read and has extremely intersting information about the planets and moons of our Solar System. Perhaps more remarkable is how the JPL scientists were able to navigate unmanned craft in deep space with such great accuracy to "visit" the many moons of the solar system.

            4 out of 5 stars Nice appetizer.......2004-05-03

The writer often uses too many adjectives. The book is however full of interesting tidbits of information about the science returned from voyager etc. It also has some interesting anecdotes about the people and events surrounding a mission.
Over all : a good book to get you started on solar system science
            -kg

4 out of 5 stars Good Historic Summary.......2004-03-10

Kluger has tackled the task of covering the complete history of the exploration of the solar system's moons. In 320 pages Kluger has managed to fill a long standing gap in the historic documentation of space exploration. Beginning with the Ranger projects of the 1960's the author continues summarizing the major planetary/moon visits up until this time (2001). While, in so few pages, the book cannot delve into the level of technical and management detail that many would like to see, the author has done justice to the task in so few pages. Kluger has gone well beyond the usual abbreviated technical presentations found in NASA/JPL news releases.
This book should prove of great interest to engineers involved in space and ocean exploration where technical failure is a constant threat. Those who practice engineering understand that learning how things fail is as important as learning how things succeed and Kluger has shown several examples of the engineering difficulties and work arounds that led to the most far reaching and remarkable exploratory effort in human history. From a scientific perspective the author has done a nice job summarizing the scientific interests and expectations for the known moons in the solar system.
This book will prove to be a good one source reading for a concise summary of planetary exploration to this time.

            4 out of 5 stars Excellent read........2004-03-03

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Its intended audience is probably those who have an interest in space, without being true fanatics (I use that term in a good way), since a great deal of what is presented in the book probably would be well-known to the long-time enthusiast. It should also be enlightening for those who just wish to learn more about the early space program and some of the robot probes first sent to the outer solar system.

The book is arranged chronologically and begins with the Ranger program, which was intended to send probes crashing into our own moon. This may be a program readers under 30 or so will have very little knowledge of (this reviewer is slightly older than that and still had little working knowledge of it). This portion of the book is most effective in its descriptions of the personalities involved (again, most of whom most people have never heard of) and the long, tedious, error-prone process by which these things got off the ground and to their eventual destination. The descriptions of the various problems that caused the first Rangers to fail is enlightening and shows how difficult spaceflight was (and is) even when the mission is fairly simple. Also of particular interest is the effects of failure on programs and personnel; recent events regarding the shuttle fleet show that constant vigilance on quality and safety issues are a recurring, probably an intrinsic, problem within NASA and really any organization.

I would have liked more discussion on the followup Surveyor missions, but from that point focus shifts outwards to the outer planets, and Mars and Venus. The Voyager program is where the book hits its stride, describing the inception of the program and the tradeoffs that had to be made within congressional budget constraints. Also fascinating is the explanation of how these things are navigated through space a billion miles away, a tedious job that most people don't think about. It is sure to increase our respect for the accomplishment of flying a small, barely-powered spacecraft to within a few thousands of miles away from a moon from over a billion miles away. It was truly an extraordinary accomplishment.

The later missions, Casini and Galileo, are probably more familiar to most readers so the novelty somewhat wears off at this point. There is still a good deal of useful information, much of which did not make it into the general news media so it is worth reading for this reason.

The great strength of the book is its descriptions of the spacecraft systems themselves and the personalities that built and flew them. The instruments, how they worked (or didn't), and the myriad of small things that had to go exactly right for the mission to succeed makes this book an excellent read for the technologically interested. Just as remarkable are the systems that didn't work and the ways the engineers and flight controllers worked around them. Less effective, though necessary of course, are the scientific examinations of the moons themselves and what was learned about them. However, this is a minor quibble and Kluger handles these issues effectively, providing enough detail for context but not getting bogged down in planetary detail. All in all, definitely a worthwhile read if you are at all interested in this aspect of NASA's history of unmanned spaceflight.

3 out of 5 stars The most incredible extraordinary superfluous writing-style.......2001-10-28

The content is not bad, not technical enough, and, frankly, the book is definitly too short to cover those 60 moons. The main problem, IMHO, is that the text is cluttered with the most incredible collection of vain tentatives to make the story even more spectacular than it is by using all the literary tricks possible... boring, boring, boring.

                  Book Description

The late J. D. Bernal's lectures given to first-year students in physics at Birkbeck College, University of London, are presented here in their entirety, tracing the history of physics up to the end of the classical era at the end of 19th century, just before the discoveries of the subatom and relatively were made. In view of the prestige and profundity of the newer discoveries, Bernal felt that the classical era was being largely forgotten. In this book, he attributes a greater relevance to the work of men from the distant past than is usually given. For instance, the idea of "atom" not only retains the language of the Greek, Democritus, who first postulated it, but there is also an absolutely unbroken connection between the atom of the Greek and that of the modern physicist. Bernal felt that the historical method would be a suitable introduction to the fundamental concepts of physics, and it is hoped that the readers of the book will be able to see something of the interplay between the theoretical and practical aspects of the subject.

5 out of 5 stars Spoiled Brats Run Amuck .......2007-05-20

Penelope Thornton-McClure is a widowed mother of one who took her husband's life insurance and bought a half interest in a run down and failing bookshop owned by her aunt. She fixes the old place up and adds a community events room where among other things she plans to host author appearances. Unfortunately for Pen the first author who comes to her store drops dead right there on the stage and she is one of the chief suspects. Fortunately for Pen her bookshop is haunted by 1940s PI Jack Shepard who was killed in that very building many years ago and with his help Pen clears her name.

In this second entry to the series Pen has another big name author appearing at the shop and the place is packed. Angel Stark has written a tell-all book about her life as part of the moneyed elite that includes the lurid details of an unsolved murder that took the life of the young queen of the spoiled Newport set. Needless to say the old money families mentioned in the book aren't at all happy and several of them show up at the reading, some with confrontation on their minds.

As you would expect it isn't long before dead bodies start showing up and although Pen isn't a suspect this time the nephew of a close friend is and Pen once again enlists Jack's help to solve the crime. An interesting twist to this story is the fact that her late husband's snooty family is involved in this case up to their eyeballs and that causes an already tense situation with the in laws to flare up into a near all out war.

As with the first book in the series this one is very well written and the characters, while not being the wacky denizens often inhabiting the pages of this genre are still an interesting lot and are very believable. Pen has already learned a lot from Jack and is becoming quite the detective in her own right but she still leans on Jack when the times get tough. The elements of noir fiction that Jack brings to the story are also extremely enjoyable and somehow this author makes this blend work and work well. She even manages to throw in a little romance to liven up the plot at times.

So far I have been very pleased with this series that I accidentally stumbled over one day and I look forward to reading the further adventures of the bookstore lady and the dead PI.

4 out of 5 stars nice cozy read.......2007-04-22

Ms Kimberly has written 2 solid, fun, cozy mysteries in The Ghost and Mrs. McClure and The Ghost and the Dead Deb. Her books are fun and easy to read. They are mixed with suspense, and humor. The characters are believable and the ghost, Jack, is a riot. Jack was a private eye in a former life and is confined to the walls of Buy-the-Book bookstore. He communicates with Penelope and she is the only one who can hear him unless he wishes to make his prescense known. Penelope operates the store with her aunt. Penelope McClure is a widow with a young son and her former husband was a rich spoiled brat whose family gives Pen, as her aunt calls her, a really hard time.

In this story, Pen is hosting a book signing of a book about an unsolved murder and the case reminds Jack of an old case he worked on while he was alive. Jack is able to project his memories into Pen's dreams. The story kicks off when the author comes up missing. The list of suspects are plenty and it is up to Jack and Pen to unravel the mystery.

These books are great for lying on the couch on a lazy Sunday afternoon and escaping reality. I highly recommend this series to anyone.

4 out of 5 stars A mix of past and present........2007-03-09

This second book in this series, is another strong entry. I must say that I really enjoy Jack's "hard-boiled" attitude when pitted up against Penelope's softer touch. Penelope is faced with an old unsolved case when she has the author of the book that outlines this murder do a signing in her bookstore. Then other bodies start turning up. Jack tells Penelope that the older case that was the subject of the book reminds him of one of his cases from 1946, and when Penelope reads his case notes, she sees the similarity. This is a refreshing twist on the cozy genre, and I found myself thoroughly enjoying it. I can't wait to read the next book to see how things continue to shape up between Penelope and Jack. (Oh, did I mention that Jack is a ghost?) But don't let that deter you. Ms. Kimberly does a really good job of character portrayal with all the people in her books, including Jack.

5 out of 5 stars A Good Series Becomes Great.......2006-09-12

I love this series! I was iffy on the first book wondering just how the author was going to convince me that there was a palpable heat between a ghost and a very much alive young woman, but she did, and now I'm into this series for the long haul. The frequent glimpses into Jack's past were enjoyable and the construct of Penelope joining him is an interesting twist with room to grow. This entry was a great deal more enjoyable than the series entry, though the first wasn't bad, quite the contrary. The main characters, both living and dead, have become fleshed out and three-dimensional. The plotline involving a tell-all is relevant to today's unfortunate influx of people who are famous for simply being omnipresent, young, and wealthy and the ridiculous gossip they generate to keep themselves in the spotlight. I love the shots the book took at some of these celebutantes and their unnecessary and tiring antics. The secondary characters are also coming along nicely and the quaint setting is simply delicious. I highly recommend this series, especially if you love the movie, The Ghost and Mrs. Muir, this is a must read for you, in fact it is just a must read.

4 out of 5 stars Mystery in the Mystery Book Store.......2006-09-03

Alice Kimberly has once again piqued the entertainment quotient of the reader. She has the ability to cause out-loud laughter, particularly in the dialogue between her central character, Penelope Thornton-McClure (bookstore owner) and her ghost PI, Jack Shepard, who mysteriously died in 1946. Although her romantic notions are a little bit of a stretch, you, as the reader, cannot help but read on....knowing the farce is provided as a "fun-filled scenario".

The quirky characters, written for background, includes help-mates for Penelope and suspects for the crime. Sometimes, the reader is not sure which is which and that provides the happiness is....... meter count for the reader.

If you have a rainy Saturday afternoon - or a quiet no-one-is-available-to-do-anything evening - pick up Alice Kimberly and I promise - the hours will go quickly because of a pleasurable book.
