We found this book because Richard Rhodes raves about it in his "Erotic Journey" autobiography. The book helps enhance lovemaking... and love. First part consists of facts... anatomy, general technique. Then, the second part consists of exercises, starting with simple communication and kissing and moving to techniques for helping each other reliably achieve 30-minute climaxes. It's nearly unnecessary to say that the exercises are fun. But the book is more than fun - it approaches being essential.

These recent scientific achievements in Observational and Theoretical Cosmology were presented in the "Multiwavelength Cosmology" conference that took place on beautiful Mykonos island in the Aegean between 17 and 20 June 2003. More than 180 Cosmologists from all over the world gathered for a four-day intense meeting in which recent results from large ground based surveys (AAT/2-df, SLOAN) and space missions (WMAP, Chandra, XMM, ISO, HST) were presented and debated, providing a huge impetus to our knowledge of the Cosmos.
The future of the subject (experiments, and directions of research) was also discussed. The conference was devoted mostly on the constraints on Cosmological models and galaxy formation theories that arise from the study of the high redshift Universe, from clusters of galaxies, and their evolution, from the cosmic microwave background, the large-scale structure and star-formation history.

This is a nicely-bound collection of Icelandic family sagas that would look good on anyone's bookshelf. The translation is straightforward and readable and the supplementary material is helpful. This would be a good starting point for anyone who intends to collect the sagas.

A five star review from someone who doesn't normally read Sagas or Mythology.......2007-09-01

I haven't read a lot into Mythology and never was really interested in the topic, but I was wandering through a bookstore and came across this collection and decided to splurge. I figured I could read a Saga here and there and just gradually work through this rather large collection, but of course what ended up happening was I couldn't put the book down. Other reading, work everything took a back seat for a couple of weeks until I plowed my way through these amazing stories.

My knowledge of Iceland and of this region is cursory at best, but now I am completely enthralled. That was one of the things I really liked about this work; you don't need to know a lot about the history or the culture to really be entertained and enlightened. I think anyone can pick up this book and get a lot of enjoyment out of these tales. You don't need to be a scholar or a Mythology enthusiast to get a lot out of this work. The stories are just very good.

James924 spoke about the problems with the intros spoiling the stories and I agree with his assessment. What I found was best is to read the story first and then go back to read the intros to enhance your understanding, but if you wanted to you could even skip the intros and just read the stories themselves.

This book was just a chance purchase on my part, and it was one that I originally thought might end up being a waste of my money, but I couldn't have been more wrong. I thoroughly enjoyed every page of this book, and I feel that I learned a lot about the history of an area I was previously unfamiliar with. This is a book that I highly recommend to anyone.

Fantastic, but watch out for spoilers........2007-08-02

The saga's in this collection are one of a kind. They are as engaging and readable as a modern historical fiction and as epic as the ancient classics. The are as useful to a scholar as they are to someone looking for a riveting novel.
HOWEVER the book is filled with LOTS of intros and explainations. The intros are VERY well written and informative but I'm afraid I learned the hard way that they are full of merciless spoilers. Thats ok for alot of people seeing as a large percentage of the people reading this will do so for scholarly purposes and may indeed have already read many of the saga's contained within. However for those of us who have never read them and are seeking to enjoy a few great stories with amazing plots and emotional climaxes, the intros are a serious downer. Each individual saga has its own intro as well as a place in the gigantic main introduction. What I did after the first saga was spoiled for me was simply read through the sagas first and then read their respective introductions which, again, are superbly written and very informative.

All that aside, if you like GREAT stories, Get this book!
If you enjoy northern european history, Get this book!
and read it. After the first saga you'll soon find yourself unable to stop turning to the next and the next...

Excellent.......2007-02-09

This anthology features extensive introductions by Smiley (a writer's perspective) and Kellog (a philological analysis), illustrations (maps, genealogies, drawings of habitats), an excellent reference section, a thoughtful glossary, and brilliant translations of some of the best prose sagas. The more difficult poetic materials (e.g., the Poetic Edda) are unfortunately not covered, but reasonable translations are available elsewhere. The material provides ample room for an initial but deeper understanding of Norwegian culture. If you were ever curious about Norway and Iceland, don't just sit there: read this book!

I love this book.......2007-02-02

I have always been interested in the vikings and iceland as a whole. Although I haven't completely finished all the sagas yet, I can say this book is definately worth checking out!! When I read these sagas I feel as though I am brough back in time to the age of the Vikings. Great translations, great sagas. One thing I do wish for however is that Njal's Saga would have been included. I plan on getting this saga seperately once I am finished with The Sagas of Icelanders! Absolutely worth reading! Fantastic!

I've read many of Rice's books and did enjoy this one, but have to say it wasn't my favorite. Liked the characters but thought it dragged a bit at the end.

Wow - this was a wonderful continuation of Summer's Child. It had me on the edge of my seat reading about Edward's cruelty and attempts at revenge! These beaten women showed remarkable strength, and in the process, found healing and renewed purpose. As a mother, I appreciated the extent they went through to protect and care for their children. Luanne Rice has a wonderful style of writing, and I enjoyed all the shark/whale symbolism. The setting added so much depth to the story because it was so interesting - not just Nova Scotia, but all the oceanography too. Liam was a wonderfully supportive character!

Perfect Follow-Up to SUMMER'S CHILD.......2007-05-14

SUMMER OF ROSES is the perfect sequel to last year's Summer's Child. The relationships that began in that first book--that between Lily and Liam; the health of young Rose; the fleeing of Marisa and her daughter, Jessica; the culmination of former detective Patrick's search for Maura; the ending health crisis of Maeve; the horrors rendered by abuser Edward Hunter--are all beautifully brought to a conclusion.

I loved SUMMER'S CHILD, but was sometimes irritated at the slow pace of the storyline starring Liam and Lily. Although the abuse she'd suffered at the hands of her first husband, Edward, forced the progression to be a slow one, nine years is a really long time!

Thankfully, things move faster in SUMMER OF ROSES, and I treasured each scene as it unfolded. Although the book can stand alone, I highly recommend reading Summer's Child first, because the background information you'll gain on each character will make you appreciate this current offering even more.

One of Rice's best!.......2006-12-13

Even after her nine-year-old daughter undergoes a successful open-heart surgery, Lily Malone has much to fear. Shortly before Rose's birth, she staged her own disappearance to flee an abusive husband, who is still actively pursuing them. Although she feels relatively safe in the small Nova Scotia harbor town she has called home all these years, Lily is still full of guilt about being away from her beloved grandmother Maeve, who raised her after the death of her parents.

Then, Lily gets word that her grandmother is in a coma...quite possibly the result of her ex-husband Edward's doing. Lily decides to risk her own safety to rush to Maeve's side, letting her know that she and Rose are doing fine and are there for her.

Doing so, of course, means that Lily's beloved little girl is open game for Edward...

If you enjoy this book, be sure to pick up "Summer's Child," where the story begins.

A poignant love story.......1997-11-10

A beautiful love story about how an attractive country lass by the name of Victoria won the heart of a handsome young French marquis (albeit an impoverished one) who had earlier promised himself to marry ONLY a rich young female aristocrat. There are some poignant moments in the book... but the ending is of course, beautiful. Another good point about this book is the emphasis on solid friendships. It's good to have good male friends like what Victoria and Phillipe had...who stood by them thru' thick and thin. I certainly wish I have friends like them! ;-)
